London's ballrooms and bedrooms thrive on scandal and decadent pleasure and the summer of 1814 will be no exception for the fourth Distinguished Rogue in Heather Boyd's regency romances series.
Widowed beauty, Arabella Lawson, Lady Farnsworth, knows the value of independence after being trapped in a marriage that left her unfulfilled. Although she longs for a lover at last, she's expected to chaperone her flirtatious niece during her first season. However, given the way the girl keeps disappearing every chance she gets, there is little hope of a good or speedy result. While searching for her charge yet again, she blunders into one of Lord Rothwell's scandalous assignations. This time it's Arabella's turn to be on the receiving end of his hungry kisses, and she's far from prepared to make the most of the opportunity.
Gossip may paint Merrick Bishop, the Earl of Rothwell, as a notorious scoundrel when it comes to women, but this season his intentions are honorable. Duty bound to marry, he's determined to discreetly court an open-minded bride and prove the gossip mongers wrong by being on his very best behavior... until in his frustration, he mistakenly kisses the wrong lady and discovers that everything about the encounter feels so very right. Merrick never once believed he had a chance with shy Arabella, and when the unthinkable happens, she turns to him not for an affair or hopes of marriage but for his friendship and protection from her own family.
Can a rogue with a reputation for breaking hearts convince a widow who only hopes for an affair that their feelings are not only the stirrings of desire but the beginnings of the deepest and truest love?

This is the first book I've read by Heather Boyd, and I absolutely loved it! Arabella is most certainly a damsel-in-distress but she is one with spirit and determination, and while she is quite a lovely character, it is Merrick who takes the icing on the cake in this story for his kindness and care to Arabella. Ultimately, this was a story of one loving man teaching the gift of love to one wounded woman, told beautifully and with fantastic pacing!
This season Arabella Lawson is hoping to finally attract a lover. She is known throughout the ton as a perfect lady as there is never a hint of scandal attached to her name. This season Arabella is in London chaperoning her niece and is struggling because the girl is quite a challenge. One evening she goes search for her but runs into Merrick Bishop the Earl of Rothwell. Merrick Bishop is on the hunt for a wife this season. He has specific requirements in mind and hopes that with this marriage he can remove the scandal attached to his name because of his father. As he looks through this year’s ladies on the marriage mart he repeatedly passes by Arabella knowing she would never have designs on him. He has always viewed her as the perfect example of a woman; poised, beautiful and above scandal. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself in a dark room with Arabella in his arms. As their friendship progress Arabella comes to depend on Merrick for her survival. An Accidental Affair is a sweet historical romance about two people that find love where neither expects it. Arabella knows that most men don’t view her as beautiful or voluptuous so she is surprised when Merrick kisses her and reveals his interest in her. She seemed a little naive to me at first, but the more I came to know the more I liked her. She is the product of her upbringing and only now is starting to emerge into her true character. And who really brings that out in her is Merrick. He is such a sweet and honorable man. He protects those he cares for and will make sure they are safe. This is evident not only with his protection of Arabella but his staff that work for him. He is a great man for Arabella. He can give her everything she wants in a relationship; including love. An Accidental Affair is a wonderful historical romance that will keep readers engaged. I am looking forward to additional books from the author.
I enjoyed this story up to a point--I don't know, maybe 75-80% in--when it just ran out of tension. There was still plenty of plot left--kidnapping and family secrets revealed and whatnot--but the heroine's continued dithering over whether or not she truly loved the hero seemed unrealistic to me. Okay, maybe she couldn't decide whether or not she loved him. Maybe she didn't really know what love was. But couldn't decide whether or not to marry him? It's 19th century England, sweetheart, and you have a man who not only says he loves you but has saved your life twice and will provide you with a home and protection from evil relatives and ensure that you don't have to live in poverty or be an outcast in society and you know it won't be gross to have his kids--is this really rocket science? Don't you think maybe you could LEARN to love him? I liked the dialogue and (most of) the characters, so I would probably try this author again, but a romance really ought to quit before I start thinking the heroine doesn't deserve to be happy.
I enjoyed this book and I've enjoyed most of the books in the series. I thought the wrap up of this one happened kind of quickly. But I was glad our heroine got the chance to chose her own fate as she felt like she had not before.
This is book 4 in the Distinguished Rogues series, but has characters from Hunting the Hero as the H/H and secondary characters.
Arabella Lawson, Lady Farnsworth, has come to London to find a lover after an unfulfilled marriage. While chaperoning her niece during her first season, Arabella is hoping to find a kind lover to rid her of her innocence. Unfortunately, her unruly niece has kept her on her toes and hasn't left much time for search for that perfect person.
On one of her many searches for her wayward niece, Arabella falls into one of Lord Rothwell's assignations. Merrick Bishop, the Earl of Rothwell, can't believe that he has Lady Farnsworth in his arms. What must she think of him now?
Arabella's brother in law is going to force her to remarry. With no family of her own, she turns to Merrick for help. Merrick can't believe his luck. As his friendship with Arabella grows, so do the secret feelings he has felt for her. Can he convience Arabella to take a second chance at marriage?
I really enjoyed this story. Merrick is suppose to have such a bad reputation, but the fact that he has taken in all of his father's illegitimate children and given them jobs shows that there is much more to the man than we first thought. He also thought so much of Arabella, that he didn't push her in anyway towards something intimate. Although at times, I just wanted to tell him to go for it!
This is my first book by this author and I will definitely be back for more.
Thanks go to LLD Press via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of and honest review.
H: Merrick Bishop, The Earl of Rothwell h: Arabella Lawson, Lady Farnsworth
I enjoyed this book. I really liked the H. My only complaint is that the h Arabella had no backbone. I felt she was always waiting for someone to save her. That being said this was still a pretty good book which i would recommenced to my friends.
Ok lets get started. You got Arabella who has been ordered to help chaperon her niece for the season. Her niece is a handful and Arabella is constantly losing her. One night she goes to find her and when she walks in a room she is kissed like she never been kissed before. When she opens her eyes its by The Earl of Rothwell someone she has always had a eye for but never bold of enough to say or act on it. From here the book turns Arabella niece run off to elope and Arabellas brother-in-law turns villain. Where can she go with no family and no friends???? Merrick, The Earl of Rothwell steps in to save the day. You have a big fight, a big discover of peoples true identity then you get your HEA.
I liked this book like I said but I didn't love it. I think Arabella is what kept me from Loving it.
So, I read 1-3 in a bundle and enjoyed it, but wasn't convinced (I didn't much like H 3).
I already had #7 for free, so decided to knock it off, and enjoyed it enough to actually spend money (I'm a huge cheapskate) on the 4-6 bundle. Again, I enjoyed them, but there was another H I didn't really like.
I was all set to buy the next bundle... but it's not been released. The series is up to book 10 or 11 I think, but not sure if it's going to bundle up or not... and I am a huge cheapskate and the 'world' is just not 'tight' enough for me to buy the individual books at a higher (but still decent) price.
The writing doesn't really leave loose ends, but doesn't really square all the details away either. So the mother who racked up $30k in debt costing her daughter her entire fortune leaving them both potentially on the streets, is just a no worries, we'll give her grandkids so she won't spend so much. The bad guys aren't always completely sorted. The social mores are not only loose, but not always the same... Unescorted young ladies are a big no no, but they all seem to do it with no thought or consequences, mistresses are bad but then they talk about marrying mistresses if they get pregnant, illegitimate children are not great but are sometimes a horror (situation not kid) and sometimes part of the scenery. Scandals are a horror but then brushed over. Widows are free to have lovers but her having a lover is a horror. It's all just a bit loose.
Fully enjoyed this new (to me) author and An Accidental Affair.
I connected with both of the characters. I didn't just like them; I loved them. I enjoyed all the characters, even Aunt Pen. Ok, so I didn't enjoy the bad brother in law. You know where bad brother in laws go? Hell! Ok, just kidding.
What I loved about this book is the friendship that developed first. The way Merrick kept her safe and protected her, and truly cared for all his family made me love him even more, and the way Arabella was so accepting and sweet and kind made me love her all the more. They were perfect for each other.
Hey fellow readers I don’t summarize the books (as there are always great full summaries written that I read myself).
I only give it my personal, general, summary of 5 stars to 1 star.
3 stars: This book is worth a read but didn’t really have me excited about interacting with the book where I could not put it down. It lacks the excitement and well roundness of my personal markers for a great read throughout the book.
Development and interest in main characters, secondary characters, humorous, movement of the book, writing/conversation and romantic/sexual content (1-2 scenes or too much unnecessary).
Read it once and that is enough for me.
However, if this book is part of a series, I would read the next book (pervious book) in the series as it would still peek my reading interest.
I’ll continue reading from this author. I wouldn’t cross the author out of my potential reads in the future.
Arabella never had a real marriage, when her husband died she was still a virgin. She was looking to find a lover. Merrick was actually looking for a bride this season but after accidentally kissing Arabella he could only dream of her. She is all that is proper and good!! But fate has put them together after her step-son attacks her and fate has it right!! A wonderful story with a beautiful ending!!
This book was very entertaining and opened my eyes to the shenanigans that went on in the Ton. That Merrick cared more for his half siblings than he did for legitimate family was amazing! He employed at least 8 Half brothers and he had 2 half sisters that a lot to take on. But it was GREAT
I absolutely love this book what’s there are better than one day it was just heartwarming beautiful sweet exciting really really a good book well written as usual have a boy and write such wonderful books are all well written very romantic very special I buy all her books because she never disappoints me
Rutherford's household is most unusual, being composed of his illegitimate half brothers. Not a scenario I have come across before in a book, but it shows his true nature very well.
Heather Boyd writes Regency romances that are crackalicious. You can't read just one. The series is a 5 star because she consistently delivers what a Regency lover craves without it feeling too formulaic. All expectations of the genre lover are more than fulfilled.
Reformed rakes do make the best husbands. Virginal widows may want love but not marriage. True love does need friendship and understanding because sometimes opposites attract.
Just what i needed. A nice historical, with characters 28-30, bits of intrigue, passion, slight OW/OM drama. I am a big fan of books where the proper FMC seeks out the MMC Rogue at his house/hangout in the dead of night to ask for his protection or help. Will check out more in this series.
An Accidental Affair, by Heather Boyd. I have now read a dozen books by Heather Boyd, and I have been very remiss in not reviewing any of them. For that I ask the author to forgive me.
Besides An Accidental Affair, I have read Broken, Charity, Chills, Engaging The Enemy, An Improper Proposal, Keepsake, and The Wild Randall's Boxed Set.
It is always a deep pleasure to read a book by a gifted author to realize that it's a great story, and kept me reading right from beginning to end. It's an even greater pleasure to find that author has written a number of books and that each one is as good as the last.
So let this review stand as a paen of praise for a remarkable novelist who has written some great, spellbinding stories. I won't attempt to review them all here, but I can assure any reader of Regency and historical romances that Heather Boyd is a singular talent, and that choosing any one of her many books to read will give you great pleasure.
Beautiful historical romance with a heroine I absolutely loved and a rogue so honorable and decent I couldn't help but fall for. I wasn't quite sure how their story would fill all this pages but I was totally enthralled and the story kept me on my toes right up until the end. I liked the side characters and the setting too, it was drawn with a loving hand and an eye for details, lots of unexpected twists and sweet romance. That's exactely how I like a love story.
An Accidental Affair by Heather Boyd is the fourth book in her Distinguished Rogues series. It was an enjoyable read I liked well enough but I have read better. The character are typical for a trope like this virginal widow looking for an affair to spread her wings and express the freedom of her widowhood. Then there is your typical titled scoundrel turning over a new leaf and in search of a wife. Not unique characters but they are well written very likable and easy to sympathize with.
Lady Farnsworth, Arabella Lawson, was trapped in a loveless marriage with an older man and when he died he left her on her own and still a virgin. She was quite content in her solitary life living in the country until her brother-in-law asks for her help as chaperone for his rambunctious daughter. Under her friends advise she decides now would be the ideal time to find a lover. But her niece's rebellious ways has her chasing the girl all over the place.
Merrick Bishop, the Earl of Rothwell, has had enough with his wicked ways and has decided to find a suitable wife. What he finds instead is an available Lady Farnsworth. Lady Farnsworth is neighbor to his best friend and has introduced to her but never had the opportunity to spend anytime with the beautiful and proper Arabella. Fate has given him the chance when her niece and his younger cousin fall in love. Lord Farnsworth, Arabella's brother-in-law, has already agreed to his daughter marrying Lord Parker. Cecily Farnsworth's will not let her father get away with marring her off to a perverted old codger like Parker and enlists her aunts help. Together Merrick and Arabella help Laurence and Cecily elope. When Lord Farnsworth finds out he gets far into his cups and attacks Arabelle. She flees the house in fear for her safety with only one place to go where she know she will be safe, to Merrick's house.
Merrick is in a rage when he finds Arabella beaten and bruised in his house and agrees to protect her from her brother-in-law. Falling more in love with every passing minute Merrick buys Arabella's house from Farnsworth and plans to give it back to her so she won't have to worry about Farnsworth selling it out from under her and selling her to Lord Parker instead of Cecily. They manage to avoid scandal while staying in his house until Merrick's meddlesome Aunt unexpectedly visits and finds out. Her knowing can ruin everything so they plan to hurry Arabella off to her country house so no ones the wiser. But everything comes unhinged when the truth comes out and secrets are revealed and Arabella is kidnapped.
One of the things I loved about this book was that even though he had the reputation of a scoundrel, Merrick was at heart a good guy. After his father's death he brought together all his half-brothers and sisters and made sure they were taken care of. He believed it was his responsibility to clean up his father's mess. Arabella was typical but I loved how she strung Merrick along for a while until she thought she was ready. I liked this book, yes, some aspects were just like other books and some I liked more. Would I recommend this book if someone asked, yes I would it was a good read and I enjoyed reading it.
As some of you know, Heather Boyd has become one of my very favorite authors. When I find out she has a new book to read I get so excited, I'm like a kid with a brand new toy. When I found out An Accidental Affair was ready to be released I was beyond ecstatic! When I received this book I was just going to read a few pages. However I became so caught up in the story that I ended up reading the whole thing.
This story is about Lady Arabella that I met in Hunting the Hero. I just knew that Bella had an interesting story to tell and I am SO glad that Heather Boyd told her story.
There is just something about Bella that I adored right away. She has been through so much in life already. She had a loveless marriage that left her with a lot of questions about a normal married life. She is expected to assist with her niece's coming out season while under the watchful eye of her brother-in-law. In my opinion her brother-in-law is a jerk! I didn't like his attitude towards his own daughter or towards Arabella at all.
Merrick Bishop, the Earl of Rothwell is known for his playboy scandalous lifestyle. Now he is ready to settle down, he just has to find a wife that he wants to marry. When he meets Arabella and gets an unexpected chance to spend time with her, he suddenly finds himself drawn to her. Arabella is a tad bit shy and he isn't sure that he stands a chance with this charming lady at all.
One of the things I really admired about Merrick is that he takes responsibility for his family. He is loyal to them and they are very loyal to him. I don't want to give to much away here but parts of this story just melted my heart.
I really don't want to tell you too much, I don't want to spoil this wonderful story for you. I will tell you there is a LOT of drama that kept me turning the pages of this book quickly. Of course I have found when it's a book by Ms.Boyd I don't seem to have the ability to set it down anyway. Ms. Boyd has a wonderful way of writing an intriguing story that contains a nice amount of drama, mystery and of course some nice steamy scenes as well.
I really enjoyed reading Arabella's story and watching her relationship with Merrick grow. I also enjoyed that a few of the characters from the Wild Randall's series made an appearance in this book. I was excited to catch up with some old friends.
If you are a historical romance fan and have not had a chance to read Heather Boyd's work yet, give this book a try. I really do think you will enjoy it. I know it has certainly hit the list of one of my favorite books so far this year. I have to admit that I was very excited to read Arabella's story and An Accidental Affair surpassed even my expectations. If you are already a fan of Heather Boyd's, like me, then HURRY, click the link and grab your copy of this book. I have no doubt you will not disappointed.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts on An Accidental Affair with you.
Finding true love is no easy thing. Widowed Arabella Lawson, Lady Farnsworth, 'not the type of woman to incite great passion in the gentlemen', comes to town to chaperone her niece, and with a personal 'mission'--to take a lover. The thing is she was married off to a much older man and before she returns to a quiet country life she decides to live just a little, to find out the truth and hopefully the joy of a brief romance. Stolen kisses in the library seem a start--or an ending. Merrick Bishop, the Earl of Rothwell needs an heir. Some quiet biddable debutante seems the very thing. This restless rake is determined to be a faithful husband once married. He has his reasons! But those stolen kisses had rather more of an effect on him than he cares to admit. Merrick is suffering the burden of his dead father's rampant casual affairs. The consequences have prompted Merrick to actions hidden away from society's view, actions more likely to earn their condemnation. He, the relentless rogue, is secretly a man of ideals with a social conscience. As he tells Arabella, Women are largely at a disadvantage in our society...They are expected to be silent when mistreated and have no grounds to complain or receive compensation for cruel use. It is wrong.' Their relationship comes to a head when Arabella's dastardly villain of a brother-in-law attempts to sell her to the highest bidder! Something he has nor right to do as she is a the widow of his brother, albeit his responsibility. Arabella turns to Merrick for help. And what an entrance into his bachelor establishment that is! Merrick's arranges for Arabella to be taken to a safe haven, not without some difficulties and confusion. Then there's Merrick's secretary Anson Holland. What a delightful man. Actually, Merrick's staff are all rather special. And Merrick's dreaded aunt Pen-- well she turns out to be a trooper! An above average rattle with enough of a twist in the tail to sustain my interest.
An Accidental Affair is the fourth book in the Distinguished Rogue series but can fully standalone. A historical regency romance, the earl looking for a suitable wife trope has an interesting twist when said suitable wife prospect is unfortunately not interested. Merrick, Lord Rothwell is on a quest to find a wife but his reputation as a rogue precedes him, that most suitable young ladies seems unwilling to take on his past. More specifically his father's own sexually prolific past. He sets his eyes on some of the debutantes but its widowed Arabella Lawson that catches his eye. Arabella is only in London for the season to chaperone her niece but its seems she too has decided its time to find a lover to fill the void that was sorely lacking in her marriage to a much older man. Lord Rothwell has caught her eye as well but it seems she's ill suited for him. Until one accidental kiss led to one accidental affair where this two find themselves unwilling to let go.
Despite the almost lighthearted premise of An Accidental Affair, this book highlights much more than romance and love. Although Merrick and Arabella's story was really engaging and entertaining. This book deals also into how women during that time were considered as almost possessions, devoid of their own free will and are subject to the men who seems to hold their future in their hands. An Accidental Affair uses this particular plot device really well. I did love Merrick and Arabella's roundabout courtship, especially because secondary characters in the book contributed to their story. Sweet, sassy and yes with realistic situations, An Accidental Affair is definitely worth the read.
A good edition to the continuous series. Again this is a re-read. I do enjoy Heather Boyd’s storytelling. She has a way with words. I feel like a lot fo the time I’m just repeating myself when reviewing her books.
Arabella Lawson is widowed. Her brother in law wants her to marry again. In fact, he’s pretty persistent about it. So what does Arabella do? Why look for a lover of course. She’s known throughout the ton as a sensible lady without an ounce of scandal attached to her or her name. Arabella is chaperoning her niece for the season and, she’s finding it quite a difficult task because she is incredibly headstrong and a challenge. She wanders off one evening and Arabella of course goes looking for her to hope to avoid a scandal of any kind. This is where she bumps into Merrick Bishop, Earl of Rothwell. Now, Merrick is on the hunt for a wife this season. He requires a lady that could help remove the scandal attached to his name, all because of his father.
This is a sweet romance. I enjoyed the realisation from both of them. They both did not expect to find love with each other. I will admit it took me a little while to warm to Arabella but once I did I understood her. Merrick really brought out her personality, she shines when she is with him. He’s an understanding, sweet and honourable gentleman. He helps Arabella with the situation with her brother in law. Their friendship grows as do their feelings.
I really like Merrick. He is just so lovely. He has taken in all of his fathers illegitimate children, the ones he knows about anyway, he has given them all positions in his household and that is such a telling fact about someone. It just shows you so much of their character.
4.5 Stars - Merrick has a bad reputation but he's trying to be responsible so he's looking for a wife. Arabella is a widow with a pristine reputation but is untouched and wants to find a lover. Merrick has admired Arabella from afar knowing she would never be interested in him. He accidently ends up kissing Arabella in a library which brings her forefront in his mind. When Arabella's brother-in-law abuses her because she won't marry someone that he's picked out, she runs way and seeks refuge in Merrick's townhouse for a few days until her reputation is threatened. They travel to her home which Merrick had previously purchased. Spending a few days together Arabella asks him to seduce her and after Merrick wants her as his wife and declares his love which she declines. Then Arabella is kidnapped by her brother-in-law but is saved and unsure if she loves Merrick, travels back to London and stays with Merricks unfriendly and nosy aunt. But the more time spent apart, the more she wants to be with him so asks him to propose again, which he does and she accepts.
I loved Merrick - he was a rake but not egotistical, supported his many illegitimate siblings, vowed to be faithful after marriage before even selecting a wife. He was more human than the oft written unrealistic (but still entertaining) alpha male.
I received An Accidental Affair as part of a Goodreads giveaway.
Arabella, the widowed Lady Farnsworth, lives with her late husband's brother, his wife, and their daughter. Tasked with chaperoning her niece Cecily around the London marriage market, Arabella also has a goal of her own: to find a lover to put the memories of her loveless, sexless marriage behind her once and for all. She finds an intriguing candidate in Merrick, Lord Rothwell. But Merrick, rogue that he is, also has a good heart (and a family of illegitimate siblings living with him), and finds himself falling for the damaged, skeptical Arabella.
The book started out promisingly: I could understand Arabella's desire to erase her failed marriage in the form of a lover. Her lack of moony-eyed dreaminess was refreshing. However, I thought the book was too short and I felt the character/plot development suffered for it. There was a lot of talk about what a rake Merrick was, but I never really saw that. He was kind, respectful, and loyal to his family, and he fell rather quickly in love with Arabella without a lot of explanation.
All in all, I think the book could have benefited greatly by another 100 or so pages of development of their courtship, but promising in many places.
I found An Accidental Affair to be a historical romance treat – it is sweet and engaging and I could hardly put it down. There’s romantic drama and family drama and even some danger, but it’s all given in Boyd’s very deft hand so the flow makes it very easy to read.
A strong, interesting, and fun novel! Heather Boyd keeps giving me exactly what I'm looking for: Interesting women, and rogues that need to be reformed. With a wonderful household! It's a simple and elegant story, told in a way only a masterful storyteller could tell. I can't wait to read the next one!
