To review chapter 66, the end is where I have to start. Shishio sensei's admission of his love for her took me by a gasp. No matter how much I want him out of the picture, it was depicted in a way, it took me by surprise while knowing it was coming.

Mika Yamamori is now my favorite Mangaka.

Now, to assert my personal opinion about the story line, I think it was a clever twist and turn of even to bring him back to the picture just when we were getting used to him not being around.

My heart goes out for Suzume, I cannot imagine how she might be feeling. Mamura is such a sweetheart, I cannot imagine breaking his heart. He's too innocent. When I think about it, I hate sensei. He should've stayed away. And I have to say this, this Tsubomi has the most aweful timing to come around and mess with things.

Team Mamura for me.

And yet, I felt everything he felt while he realised that he loved her. It is now a torture to wait for the next chapter.

Why is Shisio back on the cover???
He truly is the opposite of a role model for the children. Once again we find him back to ruin the good thing Suzume has going. Thank god for Tsubomi for telling him the truth.

Suzume and Mamura are... trying... at least. The adjustment from not a thing to some kind of thing is taking a little time, mind you, but they’re getting there. Sports day is on the way, however, and a chance encounter or two means that the light at the end of the tunnel might just turn out to be the garbage fire that is Shishio.

Boy, this is great. We start strong with Suzume’s answer to Mamura after last volume’s ending and it’s... really measured and kind of mature. Suzume does a lot of growing in this volume, especially when she realizes that she doesn’t have to love everybody the same way.

Mamura could arguably stand to call Suzume an idiot less, but he’s getting there. He epitomizes awkward-cool and there’s absolutely no question that he is the better match for Suzume. I think it comes down to a more lustful infatuation versus an actual relationship and Mamura’s got long-term prospects.

When Mamura visits Suzume and her uncle (her uncle’s barely contained glee at this development is too funny), he manages to nearly get himself in over his head with Suzume AND makes a rather sweet pronouncement when talking to her uncle. There’s some good material like this throughout the book.

Shishio turns out to be a total chump AGAIN. At least he’s consistent. He makes an incredibly poorly considered move on Suzume and given her reaction I think we can safely close the book on that chapter. If you want to see what a skewed power dynamic looks like when it starts to go sideways...

Of course, this is a manga so that doesn’t actually close the book and we get the surprise reappearance of Tsubomi to once again gum up the works (indirectly this time) and kick the can firmly down the road, but in a shocking new direction (oh, they went there). The last couple volumes have excelled at having diabolical cliffhangers.

We get a bonus manga that I looooooved to pieces, showing how Suzume’s friend Tsuru ended up with her boyfriend, from his perspective. This is really adorable, as he starts off as the standard perfect guy and becomes increasingly undone the more Tsuru is around. It’s a delightful addition to the book.

4 stars, even without my oft-desired Shishio bashing. There’s a lot of sweet and the undercurrent of a little more sour on the horizon as we move towards the finale. I’m glad to see Mamura and Suzume moving forward and also happy that they’re still really fun even once they’re together. Wonderful.

Woah this is really painful. The reason why Shishio is on the cover of volume 10 is that he finally let go of his pride and honestly conveyed his feelings for Suzume. But as you all know, she is making an effort to make things work for her and Mamura so you see the problem. It's so sad, yet this is what I was waiting for. A proper confession from Shishio. Honestly, I can't see Suzume and Shishio being together again, which is sad. I hope that Mika can change things around, but once again don't hurt Mamura. I want a happy outcome for him as well.

On the other hand, Yuyuka is officially over her crush, Mamura and is dating the persisten Togyuu senpai that has been in to her awhile now. Naww such cuties!

I really loved Yuyuka, she is so precious and she's always supporting Yosano and that makes her an excellent friend.

I live by the blushes of my boys, but Mamura's blushes are precious🥺💙.

I always team Mamura.

This manga often comes up in blog posts and recommendations as a manga where the second lead (AKA the decent guy) gets the girl. So, a plot where Second Lead Syndrome won't happen and where the girl would be treated well?
SIGN ME THE F UP.
However, I really, truly, wholeheartedly dislike Teacher-Student romance but I can be lenient if both are no longer minors. So imagine my surprise when I was able to finish this considering the FL is in HS and the homeroom teacher is, what, a decade older?? I was shookt. (Went back to check: FL is 16 while teacher is 24, yuck.) So what kept me reading? The intense desire to get over it and unleash my anger over the stupid, stupid plot. Is it good? I'm not sure. I was rushing through each pages, filled with wanting to find out who she ends up with, that I think I ended up reading a spoiler midway and then just breezing through the remaining chapters of that arc.

Honestly, Uncle said it best on Chap 46:
You jerk, do you understand what you're doing?

Good points for this manga: FL isn't ditzy, the girls are fun and supportive (we love women supporting women), mangaka tried to add diversity to her characters (I love Tsuru and Inukai), and Mamoru (the softest boy)... but these aren't enough to make up for the stress it gave me lmao

*4.75*

“The truth is, I've always regretted it. I've never said what I wanted to say. The fact that I didn't say 'Let's go to the aquarium again.' The fact that I was late on Christmas. The fact that I didn't celebrate your birthday properly. The fact that I let go of your hand on New Year's. I've hurt you so much, and made you cry a lot. I'm sorry. The truth is that I... always... "Because I love you. It's because... I love you.”

My heart can't handle the emotional rollercoaster that this volume put me through! One second I'm smiling and laughing at how cute Mamura and Suzume are, and the next I find myself crying over Satsuki. Ugh, I'm really going to be sad no matter what, aren't I?

Uhhhhh Mr. Shishio can simply PO. I like him, but with the student teacher dynamic it’s just off putting. I feel like she was slowly moving forward & he just had to be selfish😐

No!!!

Professore, caspita, l'hai piantata TU!

The problem at this point is that I'm not sure either of Suzume's love interests make sense for her...

It's kind of a bummer that she's actively rebounding with Mamura as a "maybe I'll grow to love you" experiment, although I appreciate that she's completely upfront about it. She likes him a whole lot. She puts a lot of value in their friendship - she just doesn't know if that's love, or if love looks different depending on the person you're with. Mamura is all comfort and security, while Shishio was excited fluttery feelings...which didn't turn out to be all that stable.

Mamura is fantastic; he'll take what he can get, wait patiently for her to potentially give him her whole heart, and let her go if she ultimately decides their relationship isn't what she wants.

Interesting that both he and Shishio have conversations with her uncle about their relationships and come out of it on very different paths. I wonder if Shishio will tell Suzume that he broke up with her largely because of familial disapproval?

The problem is that we haven't gotten enough context to understand what it is that Shishio "loves" about Suzume. He still, to me, just seems really lonely...and when he sees that Suzume is moving on to someone else and leaving him behind - not wanting or needing him anymore - that makes him reach out to her again. Does he want her, or does he just want to be wanted?

Don't love that his ex keeps showing up in the story just to tell him to try dating Suzume. It's a disservice to her and keeps throwing her maturity into stark relief - she and Suzume are so different that maybe Shishio was just gravitating to someone who wouldn't find him of the woman who'd left him?

I like that Suzume is initially things with Mamura - the hug was really cute, and her asking him out was a mirror of their first meeting and friendship-forming. And the bonus story with Inukai falling in love with Tsuru was really cute.
