1950. The blurb doesn’t do this book justice. It’s much more than a romance. It’s a travelog and an introduction to clan history, their struggles past and present, their almost fanatical loyalty to each particularly between Alasdair the Laird of Carn M’or and John the Buchan (Alasdair’s minder and confidante for want of a better expression). Theirs was a relationship handed down through the generations without disruption from first son to first son and in a set order. Fascinating. I don’t know how true this is to clan history but it certainly felt authentic.

Alasdair as Chieftain of the Highland Sinclair’s is soon faced with an impossible choice when it becomes clear his clan, who he’s sworn to protect refuses to accept his love for an American woman due to a WWII incident when one of her own countryman in one single act decimated many of his clan and almost killed Alasdair.

Will Alasdair break tradition or will he forsake all for love?

Just a little deviation. The result of that act jogged something loose. When colonial New Zealanders volunteered, then were conscripted during WWI and shipped to the battle front in family groups fathers and sons, brothers, uncles and nephews and sometimes complete towns and rural farming communities the effect was catastrophic. Eventually Maori tribes (similar to clans in structure) were permitted to participate in WWI and some did so in their tribal groups. Anyway the powers that be soon learned to split these men up avoiding multiple blows to mothers, wives and entire communities. At least they did in NZ with a population of around 1 million people at the start of WWI.

Back to the story. Enjoyed the humour, great characters, wonderful history and a truly descriptive setting.

Carn'Mor is set in the aftermath of WWII. Part mystery, part love story, part Scottish lore, Carn'Mor is a bittersweet story fueled by principles of dedication to others, selfless love and strength of honor. All of that is bound together into a sweet tale of two wounded people finding healing and love.
