It's really just an ordinary barn, home to a horse, cows, sheep, and all the other animals you'd expect to find. But with a little imagination it isn't hard to fill up Benjamin's barn with a flock of pterodactyls, a rhinoceros, a pirate ship, a brass band and even an entire royal family.
Children's author, novelist, and poet Reeve Lindbergh is the daughter of world-renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife, the talented writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
Reeve Lindbergh is Charles & Anne Morrow Lindbergh's daughter. She is a marvelous writer for children as well as adults. I include this one because it was a particular favorite we shared with our sons when they were little.
My husband and I are kind of into reading about the Lindbergh Kidnapping lately, and when I discovered that Reeve Lindbergh is a daughter of Charles and Anne Morris, and that she has written children’s books, I made it a point to get as many as I could. As a retired children’s librarian, I’d apparently read several of her books before without making the Lindbergh connection. Many of them are now out of print, but I got as many as I could via my public library and Amazon marketplace.
This is one of two books she wrote with the magnificent Susan Jeffers illustrating. (The other was THE MIDNIGHT FARM). Beautiful bouncy poem—really! You could bounce a baby or small child on your knee easily while reciting this poem…but then you might not get to look at the gorgeous illustrations! I wish these kinds of books wouldn’t go out of print—ever! I think this is my favorite of the two.
A poem about what a boy imagining all the things that could fit in his barn. I thought it was great, although I didn't like the cover illustration. It would make a great into to a poetry lesson.
Funny? Surreal? Nothing actually happens; it's just Benjamin and his imagination, told in a rhythmic near-rhyme. I do like the art, though. openlibrary
Written by Reeve Lindbergh, the daughter of the aviator Charles Lindbergh, Benjamin’s Barn fly’s higher than other children’s books because of its well crafted and heartfelt words, as well as it’s beautifully detailed pictures. I took the flight and now I’m on cloud 9!
