Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.
Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.
Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.
"Heathens Hollow is a place where secrets run deep, and the line between reality and nightmare is often blurred beyond recognition."
Run. That's the word Fiora Delaney waits to hear every Hunt. That's the word that gets her blood flowing and her adrenaline pumping. The guy in the stag bone mask. Where she is the prey and he is the hunter.
"He'll take me now, claim me as his own in the most primal of ways. And I want it. Need it. Crave it with every fiber of my being."
Nothing else was supposed to happen. She wasn't supposed to return home. She wasn't supposed to catch the eye of 3 masks. And she did not count on one of them being her future husband. But there are consequences to actions. And Fiora is about to learn exactly what those consequences are. She might be able to run from one… But three might be more of a challenge.
"That little minx. If she wants to play games, we can play games."
I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review. "RUN RUN RUN" by Dutch Melrose - that's all I can say and it encompasses this book perfectly. Primal Play and Why Choose and Stalking and Billionaire Romance - I could not get enough. I am absolutely obsessed with Braken (another Alpha-hole I can obsess over and I have no problem with that). His relationship with Merrick and Soren and Fiora are just so enticing to read! Love the 4 of them! The vibes of this book are dark, steamy, rich, and smutty and those are just the best vibes 🖤✨
"There's no running from us… Because if you do, we'll come running… And you'll have the three of us to deal with."
This is a why choose/polyamorous/open relationship romance and I kind of love it. We have our alpha-hole Braken who as you can obviously tell is very easily obsessable (if that's not a word it is now). I mean the billionaire possessive dark vibes are it for me and I am here for it. We have Fiora, who has a back-bone (thank god) and she has more of her share of secrets.
"He may be the boss, but I'm the boss's future wife, and I have plenty more ways left to remind him."
She wants the hunt. She craves it, just like Braken. But Braken has not met anyone like Fiora, and he does not want to let her out of his sight. And we also have Merrick and Soren who are honestly so cute together, their dynamic is dark cozy (if you know what I mean). And then all of them together… certifiably obsessed!
"If I run, they will chase."

💀 Why Choose/Polyamorous Romance 💀 Primal Play 💀 Arranged Marriage 💀 Age-Gap 💀 Dark Romance 💀 Billionaire Romance 💀 Touch Her and Die
Primal is such a delicious and addictive book. Especially the second half of the book. It starts off a bit slow. But once the pace picks up I couldn't stop reading. And then I completely devoured this novel.
At the start of the book we see Fiora taking part in The Hunt. If she puts on a red light a hunter will come to chase her through the woods and take her viciously.
"He'll take me now, claim me as his own in the most primal of ways. And I want it. Need it. Crave it with every fiber of my being."
She longs for it, lusts for it. And the man who takes her fills her up painfully pleasurable.
The hunter is Braken Frost. And he is dying to find out who Fiora truly is. When he finds out she is from the Godwin family his obsession only grows. Their families arrange a marriage between the two of them.
Fiora is also hunting down the murderer of her brother Mason. And Braken promises to help her track him down.
And those two things, the marriage and the quest to find her brother's murderer, kickstart this story.
But their lust is palpable. It was pure fire on every page.
"Believe whatever you'd like, Fiora." Braken fixes a few sweaty hairs from his forehead. How can he look so fucking perfect? I hate it. "But just know whose cum is dripping from you every step you take."
And when Fiora finds out Braken and his two best friends Soren and Merrick have a lot of sexual freedom between them she is instantly drawn to all three men.
The 'why choose' trope is getting a bit out of hand these days. I am not really enjoying it any more. But damn, Alta completely nailed the balance between all four characters in this book! I absolutely loved all the scenes between the four of them. Even Soren and Merricks own sex scenes were so damn hot. But reading how Braken pushes own limits was just so freaking juicy to read. And I love Fiora's joy and openness.
I loved the side characters. And even though the plot was rather obvious early on, I still love this book to pieces!
4.5 huge stars from me for the wonderful book! Can't wait to read the next one in this series!
I loved this author when I read MF romance and seeing she was writing why choose mm poly romances now excited me. However, this is not for me. As much as I like the primal play during The Hunt and how unhinged these people are all, I cannot get over how cringy the mm sex scenes are. There is a mm couple within this group and when they are in the mood, they just cram it in, no prep, no talk of lube. Had I stumbled upon books like this prior to finding mm romance then maybe I could overlook it but I just keep thinking “ouch”. The asshole is not self lubricating MF romance authors and I haven’t picked this up for a month due to how icked out I am so I give up. Shame because I have been craving dark romance lately especially why choose with mm scenes. Anyone have any good recs?
No rating because I’m under 50% and I’m the problem, it’s me.
I loved being immersed in Heathens Hollow again. 'Primal' was dark and gritty and fabulous and I was hooked from the very first page. Fiora was a fierce and strong character who is seeking something more from life than her family's suffocating expectations. I loved her bravery, spirit and fire. Bracken's claiming of Fiora during the hunt is extremely hot and the temperature only increases from there. When Bracken's friends and colleagues, Soren and Merrick, join the pair, the steam really is off the charts. I was enthralled by the intrigue and drama of the overarching story and enjoyed the exciting and satisfying conclusion.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Oh my this was nothing like I thought it would be. Wow! I’m still floored how this ended up. Now I did figure out who the murder was, I was not ready for how it turned out. Lots of incredible sexy times in the book. The chemistry is off the charts! Again Wow! The story kept you reading and the hotness was just right.
Actual Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 but I decided to round it up because all in all, it was a fast-paced, easy to read, dark romance palate cleanser (which was a nice surprise) with a few hiccups.
In “Primal,” Alta Hensley creates a thrilling story about desire, power, and suspense on a mysterious island called Heathens Hollow and in Seattle, which...well...is not as mysterious. The story follows Fiora Godwin, the eldest daughter (second child) of Seattle's most influential family, who escapes her controlling father to discover her true dark desires while participating in the so-called “Hunt”. After a family tragedy brings her back under her father's control, she suddenly becomes engaged to Braken Frost, a powerful businessman with a dark, alluring side. And surprise...not a real stranger to Fiora! Betrothed to the son of a rivalling family, Fiora starts to unravel secrets, fights for independence, and becomes more and more entangled with Braken and his enigmatic friends, Merrick and Soren.
The story begins with a gripping introduction to “The Hunt,” on Heathens Hollow. Hensley excels at creating a vivid and immersive world, with Heathens Hollow serving as the perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama and Fiora's journey. The suspense aspect adds an intriguing layer, keeping you on invested in the “whodunnit” part of the plot as you follow Fiora's quest for truth, alliance, and justice.
Fiora Godwin is a strong-willed and fierce fmc on a journey of independence and self-discovery. She was smart and knew exactly when to pick up a fight. Braken Frost, as you'd expect him to be, was a commanding and enigmatic business mogul, rival to the Godwin family, who becomes Fiora's possessive and protective fiancé. Merrick and Soren are Braken's close friends and partners in “The Vault,” who have a complicated relationship with both Fiora and Braken, and each other 😉
One of the book's strengths, I don't want to leave unmentioned, is its exploration of primal desires. Hensley does not shy away from explicit scenes, delivering spice in various configurations (from MM to MMFM), that will satisfy readers looking for high heat levels. The Primal Play will never push you too far or make you feel uncomfortable (primal play for beginners, so to speak). However, this focus on physical attraction comes at the expense of more nuanced relationships between the characters.
I must say, all four main characters were likeable, but, and this is my main gripe with this book...rather superficial. I think Fiora is probably the only character, who was fleshed-out properly. With Braken you'll get glimpses of his caring and protective side, allowing you to see a more complex character beyond the possessive and protective alphahole. But that's it. His relationship with Fiora is intense and passionate, however it definitely feels driven more by lust than deep emotional connection. The same goes for Soren an Merrick.
The “why choose” dynamic introduced with Merrick and Soren is intriguing but surprisingly underdeveloped. Having their own POVs at the beginning, I expected them to be more than just bystanders. I am genuinely disappointed that AH decided not to focus on the relationship between Soren, Merrick, and Fiora. While their interactions with Fiora are undeniably steamy, there's no genuine emotional connection. Real bummer because there was too much potential here left untapped!
And, the murder mystery part was a tad too predictable. But still a nice twist!
Overall, Primal promises a thrilling mix of spice, mystery, enemies-to-lovers dynamic and a good time.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving the ARC didn't affect my opinion of the book.
Thank you Valentine PR & Alta Hensley for this incredible read!

This is the second installment of Heathens Hollow
Oh my gosh! I’m such a sucker for gooooooood banter, the kind that breathes I hate you so much but you can read in between the lines of this statement, books. >>>> Give me the I loathe you, I have to marry YOU?! The banter, followed by the HARDCORE grovel 🤤🤤🤤🤤
This book is so interesting, simply because of the authenticity of the storyline. The characters are addicting to read and easy to relate to. I absolutely love the relationship of Braken & Fiora. They meet under the most interesting of circumstances, but the way they communicate can be infuriating, but I live for the banter and the drama 🍿
If smut is your plot. Pick this up today!!!!

Atla Hensley honestly can do no wrong in my eyes I will absolutely devour each and every book by this author💅
This book was oh Lord I honestly have no words, but I loved it. This book mostly follows Fiora and Braken but adding Merrick and Soren to that mix was absolutely delicious. If you have read heathens you would have met these characters previously but in this book we find out that Fiora has ran away from her family, her father in particular and Braken has uncovered this information.
When tragedy strikes and Fioras brother is unalived in a car explosion Fiora returns home for the funeral. Fioras brother was unalived on Brakens family’s territory and to settle the peace Fioras father proposes a marriage between Fiora and Braken. Now let’s just say that this is definitely not a hardship on Brakens part as the man is honest obsessed with the woman, nor is it a hardship on Fioras👀
Now Braken and his friends Soren and Merrick have a special type of relationship and again it definitely wasn’t a hardship for Fiora to become a part of this trio👀
Overall I loved this book, the plot kept me interested and the spice is HOT HOT HOT 🥵

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ She will be my prey, and I the predator.
Primal is an exciting return to Heathens Hollow and The Hunt. I loved the mystery, danger, and mafia vibes in this arranged marriage story. It's a high-energy, action-filled, and super-spicy read.
While this book is being marketed as a why-choose, it’s more of a MF with sharing. It lacks the relationship-building needed to feel like a why-choose romance. The relationships between Fiora and Merrick, and Fiora and Soren, never seemed to get past physical attraction. Since Braken et al. had always shared, it was a given that they would also share Fiora - yes, she was into it—the more, the merrier. The preponderance of the POVs were Fiora and Braken's, with Soren and Merrick making rare appearances.
This is fast burn with Chapter 1 smut! There's a primal chase scene right out of the blocks and MF, MM, and group scenes throughout. There is an established MM relationship and MM bi-awakening.
Primal can be read as a complete standalone. Fiora gets her HEA in the end.
Alta Hensley's "Primal" is a dark, thrilling ride that seamlessly blends passion, mystery, and raw primal instincts into a mesmerizing narrative. From the moment we meet Fiora, we are thrust into a world where the lines between hunter and prey blur in the most tantalizing ways.
The story kicks off with Fiora participating in The Hunt, a ritual where a red light signals a hunter to chase and claim her in the most primal of ways. This visceral, almost savage pursuit sets the tone for the intense, consuming relationship that develops between Fiora and Braken Frost. Hensley captures their fiery chemistry with palpable energy that leaps off every page. Braken's obsession with Fiora, especially after discovering her Godwin lineage, adds layers of complexity to their relationship, intertwining duty, lust, and a burgeoning love that defies the darkness around them.
As the narrative unfolds, the stakes only get higher. Fiora's quest to find her brother Mason's murderer adds a gripping layer of suspense, with Braken promising to aid her in this dangerous pursuit. Their marriage, arranged by their families, becomes the cornerstone of a story rich with intrigue and intense, almost feral passion.
One of the standout aspects of "Primal" is Hensley's ability to balance multiple characters and their relationships without losing the story's pace or intensity. The introduction of Braken's best friends, Soren and Merrick, who share a unique bond with him, adds a tantalizing dynamic. Fiora's attraction to all three men is portrayed with an openness and joy that feels both genuine and intoxicating.
Hensley’s prose is fierce and evocative, perfectly capturing the raw, almost primal emotions of her characters. Scenes between Fiora, Braken, Soren, and Merrick are scorching hot, pushing boundaries in a way that feels both daring and deliciously indulgent. The intimate moments, whether between Braken and Fiora or within the trio themselves, are written with a balance of sensuality and intensity that keeps the reader hooked.
In conclusion, "Primal" is an electrifying read that combines a dark, gripping storyline with explosive romance and complex character dynamics. Alta Hensley masterfully delivers a tale that is as thrilling as it is erotic, leaving readers breathless and eagerly anticipating what comes next. For those who crave a blend of suspense, passion, and primal instincts, "Primal" is an absolute must-read.
The first time she meets him, he’s the hunter and she’s his prey. When she meets him again, Braken is revealing to Fiora that she’s lost someone close to her. The third time they meet, she’s being told she’s marrying him.
When Fiora’s family member is killed in a mysterious way, the heir of a rival family, Braken, takes it upon himself to help Fiora uncover the mystery behind the death. Not only will this help bring the eye of suspicion and accusation off of Braden’s family, but it also gives Braken the in to spend time around Fiora, his mystery conquest from The Hunt. In order to discover the truth, however, trust must be built between the two. What follows is a story of Fiora’s quest to avenge her family, while navigating the intense chemistry between herself and Braken.
This read was super spicy and surprisingly a little taboo… which I thoroughly enjoyed. There was so much happening in this story that I never thought there was a lull in plot. Broken was *swoon* worthy, despite me historically not liking a controlling man. I think his caring nature throughout the book, even if it was hidden within certain gestures, really made me obsessed with him! I liked the air of murder mystery surrounding the story, and was shocked by the twist at the end!
I recommend this to lovers of dominating MMCs, taboo romance and, as the story suggests, primal play.
Tropes in this story: - Arranged marriage - Strong FMC who doesn’t back down - Touch her and perish - Primal play - Billionaire families - Why choose
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book via ValentinePR, but my review is all my own.
Okay so this book was different than what I thought it would be, but I still really enjoyed it. This book starts out with action right away. Like the first chapter. There isn’t really any boring parts of this book and the plot of the book was a lot more interesting than I thought. This is book two in the series, but you don’t have to read book one to know what’s going on in this book. It might help to get a better overview of some of the people to read book one first, but it won’t hurt if you don’t.
Fiora and Braken both come from rich families so when they are forced to marry it comes to no surprise for them. However this isn’t the first time these two have met. They first met on the Hunt where Braken wears a skull so no one can see who he is. Fiora and Braken are trying to figure out who killed her brother when Fiora becomes the next person on the killer’s radar. While these two are trying to figure that out they both are trying to hold all the cards in their relationship. It was so fun to see these two try to give each other a hard time, but you can definitely see their attraction to each other right away. Braken is also in a complicated relationship with Soren and Merrick. So when he gets engaged to Fiora she gets to decide if she wants in on their relationship. I loved how protective the men were of Fiora.
What to expect: ~ Arranged marriage ~ Why choose ~ Primal play ~ Billionaire romance
Welp, this book starts off with a bang! The Hunt kicks things off with intensity, and Braken is ready to chase down our heroine, Fiora. But guess what? Fiora is just as ready, and she’s not backing down!
What I wasn’t prepared for were the sizzling relationships between Fiora, Braken, Soren, and Merrick. It begins with three men in a unique bond, but Fiora jumps right in, and they welcome her with wide open arms. The dynamics are genuine, filled with love and understanding, and let me tell you, the MM romances had me over the moon – it was HOT!
Fiora's journey of self-discovery is beautiful to witness. She’s determined to find out who she truly is, and the men, all distinct yet harmonious, complement her perfectly. Experimentation and exploration are key elements in their relationship, and Fiora takes control in the best way possible. I love her SO MUCH!
The action scenes had me on the edge of my seat, gripping my chair with excitement. And their HEA? Absolutely perfect. This book had everything I wanted and more. Highly recommend!
* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
okay so as ya’ll know, I like my why choose books, which is exactly why I signed up for this arc as soon as I saw it.
“Masked men tasked to watch over me. Stalk me. Rarely leaving my side. If he can’t always be the hunter, he makes sure they can. I may be able to run from one, secretly enjoying the primal chase. But when there are three...”
I read this book in one sitting, the story flowed so well, it had tropes that I absolutely adore and the MEN? Bowing down for Braken, Merrick & Soren.
“Raw. Savage. Depraved.”
The spice was 🤌🏼 and the plot was delicious, gritty, dark & addictive and I can’t wait to read more by her!
“Women sign up to be chased with the knowledge that a basket full of money and gifts will await them in the morning on their porch—a fucked-up version of the Easter basket. The men wear stag bone masks and hunt the women down with the sole intent to fuck them however they choose—an even more fucked-up version of the Easter bunny.”

The first time I meet him, he is the hunter and I am the prey. The second time I see him, the reaper is knocking on my door. The third time, I am told he will be my husband. Every time we meet after that, I question if he will be my enemy or my lover.
This is my second time reading Alta Hensley and this time, it is a why choose/polyamorous/open relationship and I really love it. There is something about the primal kink with consent that turns me on in this book.
Braken is an alpha hole, billionaire, possessive with a dark vibe. What can we ask more to be obsessed over him? I don’t know. He meets Fiora during the Hunt. She taunts him and stands her foot in front of him. She wants the hunt. She craves it, just like him. He never met someone like Fiora. I absolutely loved their enemies-to-lovers relationship. They are from rival families, but they can’t keep their hands or mouths for themselves.
Two isn’t why choose, you will tell me, wait till you meet Merrick and Soren. They are so cute together. Their dynamic is dark cozy. They gradually joined Braken and Fiora's relationship. The group scene was hot AF. Fiora watching Merrick, Soren and Braken make out.
I highly recommend reading it if you love: 💍Arranged Marriage ⚔️Enemies-to-lovers 🖐️Multiple POVs 🖤Dark Romance ❤️🔥Why choose 🐆Primal play 💵Billionaire 👀Stalking 🌶️Spice
Thank you to Valentine Pr. And the author for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this book completely blind, not knowing what I was getting myself into one bit, but I truly loved it!!! It had my attention from the first moment. The twists and turns were a nice touch also, I will definitely recommend to anyone. I love a good why choose book!!! I wasn't sure how I felt about Fiora in the beginning, same with Soren and Merrick. I loved Braken immediately, though. I'm glad it ended the way it did and that they ended up happy!!! I don't want to spoil too much for people but read the book!!! Seriously, you won't be disappointed. I loved Altas writing. I'll definitely be going back and reading her other work now!!
Fiona (FMC) is hiding out in Heathens Hollow to avoid her family but to also enjoy her freedom. Mainly by taking part in The Hunt a primal chase where anything can take place with the consent of both parties for one seductive night. Only for things to get complicated when Fiora and Braken's night spills into reality with the death of Fiora's brother and their families calling for a marriage to join both of them. Phew.......do these two steam together and the heat escalates with the inclusion Soren and Merrick. So hot!! A brilliant read and another great addition to this series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was so good! I couldn’t put it down. The chemistry between the characters was off the charts—intense, addictive, and so well-written. You could feel every look, every touch, every bit of tension.
Also, the tension while reading and constantly guessing what would happen next? SO good. It kept me completely hooked. I love when a book makes me feel like I’m on edge—in the best way.
And let’s talk about the spice… whew. It’s spicyyyy. 🔥 If you're into books that balance great character dynamics with some seriously steamy scenes, this one delivers. Highly recommend it!!!
i fell for ALL of these characters!! as someone addicted to why choose lately, this was recommended to me from a friend on tiktok. (the primal play i should've known from the title lol)
the plot was so 🤌 it kept me so trapped and held to where I couldn't even take a break. the 4 of them were so good together as the story went on.
This story is a thrilling dive into the dark, twisted world of power, control, and forbidden romance. From the very first encounter, the tension between the characters crackles with an intensity that pulls you in. The narrative is a dance of danger and desire, where the protagonist navigates a perilous path between becoming a lover or a pawn. The plot is intriguingly layered, with each meeting between the main characters unraveling more about their complex relationship. The hunter-prey dynamic introduces an unsettling yet captivating element of suspense.
The omnipresence of masked men adds a layer of mystery and tension, creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia and uncertainty. Fiora’s secret enjoyment of the chase introduces a fascinating psychological element, hinting at a deeper, more complicated relationship with her own fears and desires.
The characters in this story are exceptionally well-crafted. Fiora, coming from a privileged background, yearns to escape the weight of her family name. She secretly performs acts of charity while living under an assumed identity in Heathens Hollow. Braken Frost, despite being a wealthy and seemingly self-centred man, reveals a surprisingly tender side. Adding Merrick and Soren, the four of them generate an undeniable, scorching intensity.
The writing is vivid and evocative, painting a world where danger lurks in every shadow, and trust is a rare commodity. The author skilfully balances the darker themes with moments of intense passion, making the reader as conflicted as Fiora about what they want to happen next.
Overall, this story is a gripping, dark romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy tales of love that tread the fine line between desire and danger, where every decision could lead to ecstasy or ruin.
Back to the hunt 😊 It was nice to head back to Heathens Hollow. I don’t normally like a why choose romance, but this one has a different dynamic. I wish that some of the relationships got a bit deeper because I don’t think they all had real emotional ties, but it was fun. And I love the spice 🌶️ Fiora, who we know is Storee’s bff, loves the hunt. She is the one that for Storee into it in book one. Braken is her hunter, soon to be husband. He is going to help Fiora track down her brothers killer. There is, of course, more drama to it. We see their relationship develop and then the addition of Soren and Merrick created our why choose…. Or at least some sharing depending on how you look at it. It was a surprise to find out Fiora was from the most influential family, but it made me admire her independence and strong personality much more. She had a backbone and we love that when we are dealing with an alpha hole. This was a fast paced read. I think it started out a bit slow, but picked up. Arranged marriage, spice, dark romance, suspense- lots to keep you interested.
Let me start out by saying I loved the premise of this book. The spice was there and the plot was right behind but I feel like it was slightly rushed and there could have been a lot more information and a longer story line to really make this an excellent read.
Although it was difficult for me to fully get into it, there were some great scenes in the storyline and the plot was there along with that bit of spice!
With that all being said, if you like: •Primal Play •Touch her and ☠️ •Masked Men •Arranged Marriage •Age Gap •Why Choose •Billionaire Romance
Definitely give it a try for yourself to form your own opinion!
After loving Heathens, I was looking forward to Primal since it seemed to have all the elements I love in a book.
That said, it just missed the mark. It’s really not RH as much as a bi- male duo that likes to link up with a “straight” guy, then straight guy ends up in an arranged marriage, and he like convinces her to sleep with all 3 of them, but also, she convinces him to sleep with the two guys,… it’s all over the damn place. It’s not poly, it’s not RH, it’s fucking complicated.
I’ll give it 2 stars cause I like Fiora’s character, but ugh. If you’re looking for RH, m/m, kink done well- read The Losers duet by Harley LaRoux, and skip this.
