When Canada’s largest national fishing tournament makes a stop at Lark Lake, located just outside the small prairie of Milligan Creek, Saskatchewan, everyone gets in on the action. They’re all hoping to catch the big one—not to mention one of the many cash prizes up for grabs. But a long-simmering grudge threatens to derail everything, as does a protest of the tournament, led by local environmentalist Henrietta Blunt. Hilarity and chaos ensue as the anglers hit the lake. And it isn’t long before it all goes off the hook, as most things in Milligan Creek usually do!
This time they’ve swapped snow forts, LARP-ing and radio for fishing rods and total madness. Off the Hook! by Kevin Miller might just be the goofiest (and most Canadian) installment yet. When a national fishing tournament rolls into tiny Lark Lake, it doesn’t take long for small-town pride, rivalry, and one very determined environmental protest to turn everything into delightful chaos.
Pure middle grade fun is what you are in for, but there's also lots of heart and hilarity in there for good measure. The whole town is involved, and you're going to see a lot of people going a bit... batty. Perhaps the adults shouldn't be the ones trusted this time around...
And Mrs. Muller WILL drive you insane. Seriously. Someone's gotta stop her rampage.
And... is that a Red Green Show reference in there??
Kevin Miller knows how to write middle grade mischief and I'm glad I was able to giggle my way through book #8. If you haven't read the rest of the series, don't worry. You can hop in anywhere. But if you want all of the fun, start from the beginning. You'll see how much this town has grown in its comedy level.
Five out of five stars. Or five out of five duct tape rolls?
In Off the Hook, the latest installment in the Milligan Creek series, hilarity meets high-stakes fishing in a small prairie town. When Canada’s biggest fishing tournament lands at Lark Lake, chaos unfolds as rivalries simmer and environmental protests stir the waters. With cash prizes up for grabs and larger-than-life characters competing for glory, the story hooks you with its humor and charm. Packed with quirky antics and unexpected twists, this book is a fun-filled adventure that captures the heart and humor of small-town life. Perfect for fans of lighthearted, feel-good tales!
Nice read, but I seriously don’t understand what the author is doing with the Mrs. Muller character. Does anyone enjoy this? Because if it continues with the next book, I am going to drop the series.
