For fans of Louise Penny and Robert Dugoni, Illusionist is a contemporary crime thriller where PI McPherson must choose between killing an author at a writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest or letting a college student die.

When an illusionist joins the Pines & Quill writing retreat, one of the owners vanishes without a trace in the middle of everyone, but the surrounding would-be witnesses don’t see or hear a thing. That’s when crime boss Georgio Gambino makes a checkmate move against his nemesis, Sean McPherson. He forces a writer in residence to kill another writer and frame McPherson. In a video call, Gambino warns the writer, “If you don’t follow orders, your daughter will die.” Then, he pans the camera to prove access to her college dorm room.

McPherson discovers that Carmine Fiore, Gambino’s second in command, covets his boss' role and is staging a coup. As Gambino’s soldiers traffic drugs, weapons, and humans, Fiore plants incriminating evidence against the notorious Sureños gang. Can McPherson leverage that knowledge for a temporary truce and the gang’s help?

The writers in residence—a former NASCAR driver, a professional triathlete, an architect turned house flipper, and a world-renowned magician who may not be who she appears to be—band together with McPherson to create the illusion of a lifetime.

Buchanan knocked it out of the park again with book 5 in her Sean McPherson series. I was very curious how the title would be represented in the story and it was so fun to ‘meet’ the actual illusionist in the cast of characters—one of the writers in attendance at the Pines & Quill writing retreat. As in the entire series, this book has fabulous twists and turns—all pulled together in a marvelously satisfying conclusion.

I love the returning characters that we’ve grown to love (or hate — if they’re in the villain category), and the inclusion of new characters in each book is always a delight as the new writers arrive to take part in a retreat at the fictional setting in the picturesque northwestern United States.

Buchanan is a master plotter of suspenseful stories—no detail is unimportant, so reading is like a literary treasure hunt because you just know that certain things people have said or the occasional seemingly innocuous item is going to play a pivotal role later on. I love the writerly quotes that begin each chapter, and the inclusion of mouthwatering recipes and wine pairings is just icing on the proverbial cake (pun intended.)

Masterful suspense that will keep you turning the pages and staying up too late!

Once again Pines & Quill writing retreat has a new cast of writers with secrets and special talents. Laurie Buchanan keeps us in suspense in this new installment of the Sean McPherson mystery series. Her writing is superb and we are always rooting for the good guys. Pines & Quill writing retreat is one of my favorite places to visit. I want to stay in one of the cabins, be treated to the magnificent meals in the main house, truly enjoy the solitude of my cabin and throw a stick for Hemingway the dog to fetch. Another knockout hit! I received an advance copy of this book and was only asked to leave an honest review which I am doing.

Sean "Mick" McPherson and the gang at Pines & Quill once again get in a heap of trouble piled on them by their archenemy, Giorgio "The Bull" Gambino. He's got in for Mick for a variety of reasons when Mick was a cop and foiled several of his crimes while making him look foolish in his eyes.

Revenge this time is in the form of a devious twist. Gambino blackmails one of the visiting writers by threatening to kill his daughter if the writer doesn't kill another guest writer and frame Mick for the crime.

Buchanan skillfully crafted a plot with lots of twists and her usual interesting subplots that often focus on one or more of the visiting writers at Pines & Quill who spend three weeks there working exclusively on their books in a secluded but comfortable setting with gourmet food, good fellowship, and supportive staff.

If you're a fan of Buchanan's, this book won't disappoint. The more we get to know Sean, Emma, Niall, Libby, Hemingway, and the others, the more we enjoy the stories because they become so personal. And as usual, Buchanan drops in descriptions of Niall's gourmet meals and wine pairings that always make your mouth water.

My favorite writers’ retreat is back in business. Sadly, the retreat is fictional but created uniquely and inventively by author Laurie Buchanan, I feel like it’s a real place for writers to sign up for a month’s pause from routine and daily life to concentrate on their novels in progress. In each book of the series we, the reader, meet new authors who are looking forward to a peaceful relaxing setting to progress with their writing. Some have publishers’ deadlines, some are hoping to get published, and some are looking for an agent. Whatever the reason, Pines & Quill is the perfect place to bring their muse and write. Except when it isn’t, because of murder, kidnapping, mind-blowing magic, and a threat to their lives and those of their loved ones.
But besides the new characters in each book, the ‘regulars’ are present to keep Pines & Quill running: an amazing chef, his wife who manages the retreat, and many family members who keep the place going, one of whom is Sean (Mick) McPherson, an ex-cop turned PI. In Illusionist, Mick must find the serial murderer who is out to get him, his family, and to destroy Pines & Quill. The action is non-stop. The reader roots for Mick and his family and for Pines & Quill while brought into the sordid world of trafficking and cartels and those who will kill for profit. Another wonderful book in Buchanan’s. Sean MacPherson series. I'm grateful to be an ARC reader and am already looking forward to the next book in the series!

Another excellent book in the Sean McPherson series. This one has many twists and turns and some red herrings thrown in for good measure. Plus, a little bump at the end needs explaining. The book as always starts with 4 new authors coming to Pine & Quill for several weeks of sharing, eating amazing food and writing. And as always, the behind-the-scenes life of Sean and his buddies is far from quiet. They are always preparing for the worst, and it frequently comes to them. Emma’s pregnancy is coming along, and she worries for her hubby that he will get have something bad happen to him and in his business and the cartels he is fighting that is always possible.

I’m always amazed at the “people” that come to the writing resort, its rather amazing to think of the different people and how they fit into the story line and meld into a happier unit after spending time together. Some discover things about themselves that allow them to move on and be a better person with a better life, others learn other things and learn how to be a better mom/dad/husband or wife. I love the series and hope there are enough stories for Sean and the rest of the gang for years to come. You do need to read books in order to understand the overall story line and know the underlying plots. But take heart they are all very good books to read and I love the author quotes at the beginning of the chapters.

Another winner in the Sean McPherson series. I love these stories and dread the day Ms. Buchanan decides she has written the last one. It will be a sad day for me. I think one of Ms. Buchanan's strong traits is her ability to create realistic and relatable characters. I love an ensemble cast and the feeling of camaraderie it creates. Here, Ms. Buchanan goes one better in that it is a family unit with friends who feel like family. It is so much fun to "visit" with them. Then we get the writers in residence who are always interesting characters and they bring an added element to the story. And just in case you wondered, the story is a wonderful mix of mystery, action, investigation, and danger. Oh, and so no one will think it is a biased love fest, I wish Ms. Buchanan would have more faith in the memory of her readers. I promise we can remember the relationship between characters from the beginning of the book until the end. We don't need to be reminded every time the character shows up. Nor do we need to be reminded of events that took place a few chapters previously. Just a pet peeve, but not enough to make me give up on the series. I highly recommend you check them out. Just be prepared to have things told to you more than once.

I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.5

We read whodunits to find out what happened, where, and how. In the case of author Laurie Buchanan’s thrillers, we become spectators at the scene. After the customary build-up of mystery and emotion at the Pines and Quill Writer’s Retreat, I was there during the heart-pounding confrontation with the beloved Libby caught in crime boss Gambino’s bull’s eye. In another diabolical scheme, an illusionist and others fight to thwart the murder of Brittany, an innocent college student now threatened by Carmine Fiore’s gruesome gang.

A trademark of every book I’ve read in the Sean McPherson series is the propulsive plot but also credible characters like law-enforcers Mick, Joe, and Rafferty in contrast to chef Niall and Emma in the retreat’s cozy kitchen. As in her previous books, Laurie Buchanan’s skill with language is again notable in Illusionist. Author Toni Morrison was speaking of Laurie’s artistry when she comments, “You rely on a sentence to do more than the denotation and connotation, you revel in the smoke that the words send up.” You’ll find lots of smoke and mirrors in Laurie’s Book 5 of the Sean McPherson series, Illusionist, which rates 5 stars in my opinion.

I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. This is book 5 in this series in which each title begins with an I - the first letter of a word relating to an event in the book. I hardly have enough words to describe what I like about this book - the whole series - by Laurie Buchanan. The setting, Pines and Quill, the idyllic writer's retreat built among woodland and beautiful scenery by Libby and Niall McCullough sounds perfect for writers to work in peace in their beautifully designed and decorated cottages. It seems as though nothing could intrude on the peace and tranquillity. But Gambino "The bull" sadistic, cruel, psychopathic crime boss holds a grudge against Sean "Mick" McPherson, Libby's brother and has already, by this book, inflicted a lot of heartbreak and fear, but won't stop until he's inflicted the as much pain as possible on Mick.
The author writes this great story in such a way that the juxtaposition of the peaceful setting, genial hosts, their Irish wolfhound's antics, the hopes and expectations of the guest writers, and the evil that is watching and waiting to inflict terror on them is suspenseful, intriguing and totally impossible to put down. There are many things I like about this author's writing - too many to mention, but one thing in particular is the way that, when the characters are thinking, as normal people do, rather than using "He/she thought" narrated by the author, their thoughts are written in the first person in italics so the reader can "see" into the minds of the characters.
Plus, the meals that Niall, the chef cooks for the occupants of Pines and Quill are so mouth wateringly delicious sounding, I really think that Ms. Buchanan should publish a recipe book at the end of the series!

Illusionist is the fifth book in the Sean McPherson series. This can be a stand-alone read, but I recommend starting at the beginning because the series is fabulous.

The whole crew that we have come to love has returned for another thrilling suspenseful story. Gambino is wired up to take his revenge once and for all against 'Mick' for all the wrongs he has done against him. But there seems to be a coup about to happen that will turn up the heat for all concerned.

There are plenty of twists and turns to carefully read so you do not miss a clue in this story. As always, the picturesque descriptions of the Pines & Quill as well as the fabulous food being served is woven in to add a richness to the drama. I highly recommend this book as well as the series. You will not be disappointed.

Buchanan doesn't disappoint in this fifth book in the Sean McPherson series. Again, the warmth of the writing retreat Pines and Quill is the perfect scene to set up the contrast of the evil about to unfold on this community of writers. I'm totally invested in the main characters Emma and Sam and rooting for them through the horrific unfolding of yet another plot against Sam.

The friends and family surrounding them make this drama more compelling as the reader is drawn into the high stakes of evil against this lovely and supportive group who seem to get closer with each book.

Can't wait for Book 6!

Opening Laurie Buchanan’s ‘Illusionist’ is like stepping into another world where the reader is instantly immersed into the atmospheric Pacific Northwest. At times, I found myself wanting to slow down, because Buchanan’s descriptions are so beautifully written that I wanted to immerse myself in them.

Like the first four books in this series, the story revolves around the writing retreat, Pines and Quills. Returning to the retreat and the family who runs it — Niall, Libby, Sean, Emma, and Hemmingway—feels a lot like coming home to family.

But don’t be fooled. From the very beginning, there’s a sense of danger. Early in the story, we learn that one of the writers is being blackmailed into killing someone at the retreat, while framing Sean “Mick” McPherson for the murder. As the story progresses, and the situation grows more dire, a solution felt impossible. And this is where Buchanan’s talent truly shines.

With one twist after another, I was on the edge of my seat to the very end. The conclusion of the story was satisfying while planting the seed for danger ahead. I can’t wait to find out what danger awaits the Pines and Quills family.

WOW WOW WOW. I could not put this book down. It grabs you from the first sentence and does not let go until the spine tingling ending! Buchanan effortlessly flows another story in the series of the characters at Pine and Quill that we have all come to know and love. This time, the evil Gambino has a plan to destroy not only Sean McPherson, but also the writing retreat that the family has worked so hard to perfect. Someone needs to commit a murder and make Sean McPherson the scapegoat. Each writer in residence could possibly be the murderer. Meanwhile, a young girl's life is at risk, and a member of the family is kidnapped! There are twists and turns from every angle, as the writers in residence work with the family to plan an illusion that will save the lives of their loved ones. It is fast paced and exciting, and will keep you guessing until the last page. These books just keep getting better, and I can't wait until the next one in the series!

In the latest installment of “What is Mick getting into now?”, he just can’t seem to shake crime boss Gambino from being obsessed with him, at least not without the help from his family and friends. I loved the new characters at Pines and Quill and especially enjoyed the hint of magic. Reading the Sean McPherson books feels like a reunion of friends. The characters are easy to fall in love with and I love going back to the forest of the Pacific Northwest.

This was a fun one. Lots of twists and turns.
And it takes place in my retirement dream setting... a secluded retreat with individual cabins. 😍
OK, except in my retirement dream there wouldn't be killing, shooting, knives, gang members, mob bosses, etc.
Yep, this one has it all (plus mouth watering meals described in delicious details).
I didn't realize this was a series book, but honestly, the author did a good job filling the reader in where needed.
Each month 4 writers come to the exclusive Pines & Quill Writers Retreat. After a few tumultuous months where a dangerous mob boss took revenge on the owners (one of whom is a semi-retired detective) and almost killed the retreat's reputation, the new authors are ready for their 21 day escape. Being leary of the mob boss planting someone, all authors have been heavily vetted. But then one receives a phone call, "kill another author and pin it on the detective or we kill your daughter."

This series became one of my favorites starting with the first book. Illusionist, book five in the series just keeps the momentum going and actually ramping it up. I have become connected to the characters so each time it's like visiting old friends. The author has a way of describing everything right down to the smells and makes it all feel so real. The storyline will keep you guessing and I have to say, this one had my jaw drop at the end.

I will be anxiously waiting for the next book when once again, I get to visit the writer's retreat, Pines & Quill.

Laurie Buchanan’s Illusionist—#5 in her Sean McPherson series—proves a great author can write any book in a series and make it read like a stand-alone novel. This was my first read of her books, and she nestled me among her characters like we were old friends. I instantly got a Three Pines vibe, like I’d been dropped in a Louise Penny story.

Crime boss Georgio Gambino is back with a vengeance, determined to frame “Mick” McPherson for murder. Buchanan sets up the plot like a chess game—one writing retreat author will murder another and make it look like McPherson did it. If they screw it up, the murdering author loses a family member.

Hang on for the ride in this fast-paced, whodunnit, mystery thriller! 5 Stars!

Illusionist is the fifth book in the series. Like the first four books, the Illusionist does not disappoint.

Pines & Quill offers a tranquil three week writer’s retreat intended to foster, stimulate and encourage the authors to achieve direction and accomplish their manuscripts. Pines & Quill is nestled in a twenty acre forest off the northern Pacific coastline that overlooks Bellingham Bay outside the village of Fairhaven, Washington.

Sounds heavenly doesn’t it?

Carmine ‘The Bull’ Gambino, crime boss continues his viscious vendetta against Sean “Mick” McPherson, his family, friends and the Pines and Quill retreat. They are all targets. Murder, attempted murder, car bombings and kidnapping have yet to quench the “Bull’s” need for vengeance.

Laurie Buchanan’s characters are well developed, life like, with fears, dreams, financial and personal problems and concerns. The criminals are ruthless, angry, greedy and vindictive. And during the story the reader gets to know them all too well.
Illusionist is an intriguing fast pace thriller!

I received, with much delight, this book as an Advanced Review Copy. The choice of wording and description are colorful and descriptive. I felt like an unseen voyeur and unseen participant of the action-filled book. The characters are fully developed, fleshed out. Their interactions are meaningful. The angst and anxiety escalated to a point where the pages turn rapidly while my eyelids stayed pried open late into the night—until the book falls and sleep calls. The author writes passages so colorful and vivid.

If you haven’t read previous books within the series, please do. You owe yourself the luxury of reading the Mick McPherson series and grow to explore a quaint writers in residence experience at Pines & Quill.

I wish for the recipes to be included in the book, if only to reap the richness of the food talked about and tasted within the book.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Laurie Buchanan’s Illusionist is a masterclass in high-stakes suspense, where the line between deception and truth blurs in the misty woods of the Pacific Northwest. With the fifth installment of the Sean McPherson series, Buchanan doesn’t just raise the stakes—she detonates them.

Set at the Pines & Quill writing retreat, the novel opens with a chilling dilemma: PI Sean McPherson must either kill a fellow writer or let a college student die. The retreat, usually a haven for creativity, becomes a stage for manipulation when a world-renowned illusionist arrives—and one of the owners vanishes without a trace. Enter crime boss Georgio Gambino, who orchestrates a sinister plot involving blackmail, murder, and a frame job that puts McPherson directly in the crosshairs.

As McPherson uncovers a coup brewing within Gambino’s ranks, he must navigate a labyrinth of drug trafficking, human smuggling, and gang politics. The twist? He enlists the help of the retreat’s eclectic residents—a NASCAR driver, a triathlete, a house-flipping architect, and the enigmatic magician—to pull off a counter-illusion that could save lives and reputations.

Buchanan’s signature blend of cozy ambiance and razor-sharp tension is on full display. She lures readers in with warm descriptions of food, décor, and camaraderie, only to slam them into adrenaline-fueled chaos. Thematically, Illusionist explores loyalty, manipulation, and the ethics of sacrifice. It’s a thriller with a conscience, asking not just what McPherson will do—but what he should do.

Illusionist is not just a crime thriller—it’s a cerebral puzzle wrapped in emotional stakes. Buchanan continues to evolve McPherson’s character while expanding the moral complexity of her world. Fans of Louise Penny and Robert Dugoni will find familiar terrain, but Buchanan’s voice is distinctly her own: compassionate, cunning, and utterly captivating.

If you’re drawn to thrillers that balance grit with grace, Illusionist delivers the illusion—and the impact.

5 Reasons I Loved "Illusionist" by Laurie Buchanan

(Book Five in the Sean McPherson Novel Series)

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, and this review is my opinion.

Here are five reasons this book instantly became a favorite for me:

Reason #1. Laurie Buchanan wrote it.

That’s reason enough for me. She had me at her bio, "a type-A Buddhist." I trust her as a storyteller. Her writing is precise and emotionally charged. Every sentence is crafted with intention. You’re pulled in from page one and held there with just the right tension and intrigue.

Reason #2. The characters are vivid and unforgettable.

Buchanan doesn’t just describe her character. She introduces you to them to keep you curious and engaged. Each one is clear, captivating, and layered with just enough mystery to keep you wanting to read more about them.

Reason #3. The chapter quotes are tiny sparks of insight.

Every chapter begins with a quote that’s reflective and feels perfectly placed. Like breadcrumbs for the soul, these quotes add another layer of depth to the story, inviting you to reflect as the plot thickens.

Reason #4. The suspense is spiritual.

Yes, there’s mystery. Yes, there’s tension. But there’s also something deeper. Illusionist touches a thread beneath the plot, something that feels almost spiritual in nature. It’s more than just a “whodunit.” It’s “what’s underneath it all?”

Reason #5. The pacing is magnetic.

I loved savoring this book. The story compels you to turn the page. Buchanan knows how to balance plot with presence and action with atmosphere. You’re both racing to the end and wishing it wouldn’t end.

Laurie Buchanan takes Book 5 in the Sean McPherson series to a whole new, thrilling level!

I believe “Illusionist” is my favorite book yet in the “Sean McPherson” series by Laurie Buchanan. The storyline absolutely stunned me early on, and the end left my jaw on the floor. I need to know what happens in Book 6 so I can take my jaw off the floor! The story, like with all the books, centers around the Pines & Quill writers retreat on the scenic coast of Washington State, where Sean “Mick” McPherson works. He’s a former cop, now a PI. His sister Lilly runs the retreat with her Scottish husband Niall. Initially, October promises to be interesting and peaceful at Pines & Quill. All writers are in the mystery and thriller genres. Niall cooks up a storm with many yummy treats (pumpkin spice pull apart bread!), and Hemmingway, the resident Irish wolfhound, is a big, tail-wagging, treat eater. Soon it becomes clear that crime boss Gambino has gone to new and more diabolical levels to get his revenge against Mick. I seriously cannot say much more about “Illusionist” for fear of giving things away. Suffice to say, Ms. Buchanan has upped the nail-biting notch big time. What I love about this book, and the entire series, is that it is a wonderful mix of thriller, police procedural, and cozy mystery that I don’t believe any other series quite has. If you want to escape to a cozy writers retreat and stay on the edge of your seat with thrills and action, I highly recommend “Illusionist.” I listened to the audiobook version of “Illusionist,” and, as always, narrator Rebecca Stern does an amazing job bringing the various characters to life.

This is the fifth book in the Sean McPherson series and it does not disappoint. It is full of action, good food - yum, mystery and mayhem. I love this series.

One of the writers at the Pines and Quill writing retreat is directed by Georgio Gambino, to kill one of the other writers and frame Sean (Mick) McPherson. If the writer does not do this, the daughter of that writer who is at university, will be killed. Gambino proves that he can get access to the writer's daughter by showing a video of the daughter in her dormitory.

Carmine Fiore who is Gambino’s second in command, covets his boss' role and is staging a coup. He wants to take over the syndicate of trafficking drugs, weapons, and humans. He plants evidence to implicate their rivals, the Sureños gang, in Gambino's crimes.

An illusionist is one of the writers at the retreat. She is going to hold a magic show. Rafferty, Joe and their families are invited.

When it becomes known about Gambino's plot to have a writer killed and Mick be implicated, they all get together to create an illusion to fool Gambino.

Will it work?
Will the writer's daughter live or die?
Will Mick end up in jail?
You will need to read this book to find out.

This is an interesting series of books. I recommend that if you haven't read the first four, you do so prior to reading this story.

I received a copy of this book as an ARC and thank the author for such an excellent read.

I have read and loved each one of Laurie Buchanan’s books in the Sean McPherson Novels.

“The Illusionist” is book five in Laurie Buchanan’s fast-paced and clever crime thriller series. Her writing has realistic plot twists, tons of suspense, strong purposeful characters, and the author builds the story with an intensifying crescendo of urgency.

But just as importantly, the author creates a magnifying and irresistible contrast of the crime thriller themes with the magical, nurturing and serene backdrop of Pines and Quill, a writing retreat locale where all the books in the series occur. Pines and Quill, located in Washington State, is owned by Libby and Niall, who have created a writing ambience that nurtures and inspires the mind, body and soul. This is done with detailed custom-made aromatherapy scents made uniquely for each guest cottage, homemade meals worthy of a 5-star dining experience, thoughtfully laid out landscaping and cottages, and after dinner conversation and unique parlor games to inspire the writing muse.

I devoured this book~I had been looking forward to reading it for months and was eagerly awaiting the publishing date. Buchanan’s books are wonderful, and with each successive book, the author’s writing has aged like a beautiful fine wine so that new stylistic subtleties emerge with the reader’s deepening kinship with the owners and their extended clan of loved ones.

This crime-thriller is a page-turner for certain!
