For Rori Mitchell, delulu is decidedly not the solulu.
Getting her lick back is.
What starts as chance encounter at a sporting event ends up being a perfect distraction from the chaos of a broken heart. Instead of throwing herself into work, she throws herself - for good or bad - into Tatum Wilder.
An offensive tackle for the Connecticut Kings, Tatum is used to high-stakes games and intense scrutiny. On the field, he’s a powerhouse; off the field, he’s a country boy with gentleman tendencies… and a propensity toward knowing the right thing to say at all times.
Well.
Most of the time.
Their connection?
Immediate and undeniable.
Well…
They can deny it.
After all, with Rori on the heels of heartbreak, a relationship could be a disaster.
Free Agency might be a position of power.
Or maybe just a crutch.

“Love is… consuming, and motivating, and amplifying, and debilitating, all these things it has the possibility to be, but it’s… neutral. Not kind or cruel. That depends on how it’s wielded.”

Aurora Mitchell is pretty close to who I strive to be in my next lifetime. She was sure of herself, a career focused STEM genius (like who sits and codes an entire software system in hours) Rori that’s who. She was confident, beautiful by EVERYONES standards and was a boss in every sense of the word. Where I DO NOT I repeat 🗣️DO NOT strive to be the same is in the relationship department. Rori has been with her NFL fiancé for years. Before he was a household name, they were riders, literally getting it out the mud together. By her own admission Monty is consistent and this extends to his cheating ways. Rori is comfortable living in her delusions until the most recent public humiliation shakes some sense into her and now the only thing on her mind is getting her lick back. And baby she got her front and back licked 😋

I really enjoyed Rori and Tatum’s story but it read more like part one of a two part series and not a complete book. Will we see more from them in the future?! The world may never know. I loved the friendship and familial aspects of the story. The story flowed well and the chemistry felt extremely natural between these two. The way they started out with just vibes and no expectations made for a really good layering of the storyline.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW***

There were a lot of things that were started but left incomplete. Just to mention a few:

🔹Dennis and Amanda
🔹Monty and his reveal at the end
🔹We saw Amanda and Rori meet but not Amanda with the rest of the family and we never saw Tatum with her family.
🔹I would’ve loved to have seen Tatum and Rori navigate through her apprehensions with becoming a mother.

There were a lot of mini foundations set but no complete house was built with this book. The blind date with Kevion’s team mate was an unnecessary addition to the book and definitely had Rori looking like a ball hopper. That was not a good look for sis and I didn’t like that for her at all. The book also read like its own book and not book 10 of a series. Yes there were cameos/ mentions from Cole, JJ, Trent and a few others but there was a slight disconnect for me.

🏈It was definitely yams 🍠 for me because I will call somebody mashed potatoes in a heartbeat 🤭
🏈It was granny for me… sis has LIVED do you hear me LIVED!!
🏈It was Tatum’s size being likened to a refrigerator because we love us a BIG MAN!! 🤤
🏈It was drunk Rori and the mud scene for me because claim your man sis 😆
🏈It was Tatum getting out the bed with that bat swangin for me 🫠😂🍆 zero fks given
🏈It was Rori advocating for black maternal health in all aspects for me🤰🏽👩🏽‍🍼

These two free agents managed to find love and vibes and that’s a win win if you ask me! I truly hope this isn’t the last we hear from Tater and Rori because they definitely have more story left to tell!

Free to Vibe

Aurora aka Rori is the epitome of Black Girl Magic. She is the owner of a parenting app  that helps with every phase..preparing for child birth, pregnancy, post partum. She really lives beauty and brains because not only does she own the app, she codes too. She was a hard worker dedicated to improving the lives of parents despite not having any children of her own and having a rich NFL player for a boyfriend for 16 years. Rori had been allowing her boyfriend Monty to run all over her for years. He was literally Messy Monty, the fkboy with no remorse until it was too late. He had all the audacity in the world and I didn't understand his logic at all.  We get the pleasure of watching her become a "Free Agent" and vibe with Tatum, a thick, sweet yet spicy, country boy who plays football for an opposing team. Yessss to the drama 🤭

There is so much to unpack, but I loved the development of Rori and Tatum. We slowly learned about their past which shaped their decisions and life experiences. Tatum was a breath of fresh air and everything Rori needed at that point in her life. His BDE was loud and strong.

I died when Tatum's 🍆was swinging making a statement.
I cackled when he made demands and Rori just accepted them after all that bs she was on 🤣
I loved everything about the scene in the country...The Mudding, Grandma's mack game, and Tatum's daddy was with the ish!!
The way they supported each other, I honestly wanted more for them 😫.

I love BIG loves and this wasn't that. It was clear that it was there, but it wasn't expressed and that was missing for me. The ending was anticlimactic, I needed like 50-100 more pages or a really strong epilogue to wrap up the story. I wanted Rori and Tatum to have a real conversation about their future, discuss her stance on marriage and children. I didn't like that it ended with Monty's dumb azz perceptions. The brief appearance of Rori's mom, but no real interaction with Tatum...I was just left with too many questions.

That said CCJ gave us so much with this story. I loved these Mcs flaws and all, she really humanized them. I am a big fan of the CK series and this definitely adds value.

I Loved CK 10... TatumRori all day!

From the first page to the last page, CK !10 was so much fun. Rori getting punked by Monty on her B-day was cruel and intentional crazy. How did old dude expect to come back from this foul play. There was No Way to recover his fumble after Country Boy Tatum was called into the mix. Super nerd Rori had all the character traits a sane man should have gravitated towards. She was a boss, intelligent, and hella beautiful. After her sister Nova died, Rori was different, and because Monty was in his own cheating world, he missed the changes. No spoilers but, the story will unfold with the football team, old friends from CK and a few new faces and the steal your girl story between Monty and Tatum. You all this author delivered a fantastic story, she knows how to bring the fire, passion with a tight storyline. Even the illness part was tactfully addressed in Mrs Jones's classy fashion. The romantic part was chef's kiss excellence. I can't wait to see what the Wilders have in store for us.

Tatum and Rori

I absolutely adore this book. I finished this book in less than 24 hours. I loved the pace, the energy, and the vibe of the story. Tatum is unlike any Knight in Shining armor that you may have heard of but that is exactly what he was. Everything about him exudes BDE and I was all for it. Rori is my STEM Shero who unfortunately was in a long term relationship that long since expired with a professional athlete who did not know the definition of respect. Yet he definitely lived up to the FB persona (and FB is NOT Facebook). Rori reached her breaking point with Montgomery and enters Big Country Tater to the rescue. Tatum and Rori made sense and by the time I reached the end I wanted more of their story...it was that good. This author knows how to pen a story that leaves you wanting for more. Great read.

Free Agent was a funny, swoon worthy end to the Connecticut Kings series. I really liked Rori and I was worried this would be yet another story of the long suffering FMC that just cries and licks her wounds after being embarrassed and disrespected by her cheating mate. However, I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see her get her literal lick back with fine ass CK linebacker Tatum aka Country Boy Tate. And then be extra petty about it. They had Monty’s punk ass so pressed and I loved every minute of it.

This couple was so cute! The banter and sexiness were everything. Tatum’s family was a hoot! Rori believed that old adage about the quickest way to get over a man and it worked out for her big time. My only complaint is since this is the final book in the series I wish we had gotten a bit of an update on more of the CCJ characters, namely the Richardsons. But CCJ knows how to write a feel good romance and she did just that with this one.

Let’s Set the Mood Right Quick:

Free Agent: Connecticut Kings book 10 by Christina C Jones

Drink: The Mogul Masher

Music: It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona, Problem Solver by Jamie Ray ft. Boosie Badazz

Aurora “Rori” Mitchell: If, “in her own lane,” was a person it would be Rori. She is so bomb. Baby girl was about her business, and we loved that for her.

Tatum “Country Boy Tate” Wilder: If, “fu€k around and find out,” was a person it would be Tatum. Tatum was a man of action and we loved that for him.

CCJ never fails to remind us why her name stays in new and old readers mouths alike. Her skills with a pen never fails to amaze my sister and I. You couldn’t tell us by the end of this story our fav couples from this series would have some competition lol. Rori and Tatum, we only call him by his full name because that’s how we roll lol, were so funny and fun to be around. We loved their back-and-forth banter and watching them fall for each other was poetry in motion. Rori’s heart was so big and kind. She was a bada$$ with a computer. Baby girl was beautiful and just so easy to love. When we meet her, she was in an interesting place in life, and it had us feeling some type of way honestly. She was just an all-around lovable character who was a true girls girl. Tatum was THE man. Period!!! We will hear nothing else on the matter thank you. He stood on business and didn’t play about his. CCJ created an experience for us that had us giggling, fighting the air, and mind blown so many times. We loved the story from beginning to end. We wanted more and more. We blew through this story so fast. And as always with the Connecticut Kings series it was so nice catching up and seeing some of our favs again. This story isn’t to be missed.

4.5 ⭐

One of CCJ's greatest gifts is writing characters whose decisions you may not agree with (Rori's relationship with her ex) but who you can emphasize with.
I was ready from Chapter 1 for Rori to be done with Monty's cheating ass but she needed to do things on her own time and apparently needed to get royally embarrassed.
I loved how Tatum supported and loved Rori and I adored his family.

We’re at Book 10 people 🥹

“You’re on your Free Agent sh*t. I like that” ….

Author Christina Jones came back with a bang for a 2024 release and I thoroughly enjoyed this read in the Connecticut King Series. It follows Aurora aka Rori and Tatum aka Tate “the country boy” in an unexpected but needed meet up. My sis Rori said enough is enough w the F boys of this world and my mistreatment I don’t deserve so let me get my Lick Back 😪 and Tatum was their for team he’s a girls girl and I love it he said no women should be treated by a man such so lemme show you how it’s really done babes sit back, relax, and enjoy this ride ‼️. The whole reading experience was funny, insightful and enamoring with how Rori was supported and how Tate was stepping. CCJ had me cackling throughout the story especially with the secondary characters involved like Tatum’s family which were hilarious.

I love when authors incorporate maternal health and black maternal health, care, and knowledge into a book it always gets me in my feels and Author Christina brought it full throttle. Rori was a force to be reckon with when it comes to advocating for women’s maternal health and I was all here for it especially to make sure the older generation and men be quiet and take a back seat with the negativity on this topic 👏.

This was a 4.7 star read for me I wanted to give 5 but I wish we got to see Tatum meet her side of the family, I needed to see her trifling ex fiancés outcome because he was a disgrace and I needed that YamYam jezebel to kick rocks she wasn’t getting enough punishment for me 😂. I also wanted to see Rori overcome her fear of being pregnant or having a baby because her sisters tragedy shaped who she is today positively and negatively. I do get that Tate and Rori relationship was fresh and new but I wanted more of them 🤷‍♀️ maybe I’m greedy but that’s how I feel. I felt that Rori’s parents didn’t do much we didn’t see her father but he should have came through with his promise of giving that man child a fist because for them to know him for almost 20 years and not react the way I wanted them to idk. Lastly I wanted to see Rori go on a healing journey because she was in a relationship for a long time and jumped into a next one.
They kept coming for Tatum’s stature that he can’t control calling him big a$$ even his own mamma 😭😂

This was a good read it was a fluffy enough romance balanced with realistic aspects. It was 4 stars for me because it was well written, they was getting they freak on regularly and each character had depth. The main character were pretty likeable and the romance was believable. Now where I took the star off was cus Rori was blowing mine through out the book. I’m not gonna pretend to be some super tough girl who thinks it’s easy to leave a long term relationship. My issue came in where she was constantly pointing out the issues and her unsettled feelings yet STILL THERE. Like it’s clear you know better, clear you ready to get out of there, clear that something is off between y’all YET EVERY CHAPTER YOU GETTING RAGGED AND TAGGED on the internet because of him and you letting it get you worked up and out of character. Like Rori GET UP AND FIGHT BACK lol not in the literal sense but please sue that girl block that man and get a restraining order or something cus you being slandered and it’s affecting your business. I also wish we would’ve got more follow up to the authentication error thing cus I swore it was gonna lead to Monty paying for some back door BS and ir was resolved with some power coding for 17 hrs lol I needed more drama. Additionally Rori was setting the tone with Tatum so I didn’t really understand why she was so mad about the interview. You can’t cry and say you tired of being an internet spectacle and when someone tries to keep it cute you offended. Then on top of being offended you not speaking up for yourself like girl GROW UP, you overthinking melting your brain and for what cus you won’t open ya mouth up. Tatum could’ve done better during that interview but I def get his mindset. I hated that he and Monty even got into it cus like negro I’m not talking to you about nothing IDC what it is would’ve played deaf dumb and blind. Tatum was very patient but I also think he could’ve pressed miss girl a lil harder after the Wildwood trip so they could have clarity but again she’s the one in limbo fresh out a relationship so she has the upper hand. Overall I really liked that the ending was realistic wasn’t no honeymoon baby and wedding like the pace felt natural and sensible.

Oh Tatum!!!!

I really, really enjoyed this story. I thought fir sure with it being a part of a series that I've not read that I would find myself searching for clues to what, who and where but this story flowed seamlessly. I followed along perfectly and enjoyed it tremendously. Tatum is BOOK BAE and has me wanting to go muddling. But no lie, I need some sterile mud. I laughed, swooned and even cried a little bit.
Absolutely loved this story.

CK Series? 🤷🏾‍♀️

I am a big fan of the CK series and absolutely love all of the characters.  Both CCJ and LB have created what felt like a family to me, and I rush to read any time a new book is dropped. While this was still a great read, I don't feel like this book is really part of the CK series other than the mention of Tatem being part of the team.  Most of the other books focused on the characters as well as the team, and that element was missed in this book.  I did love Tatem and his BDE and how he helped Rori get through her breakup with f-boy Monty.  The ending seemed a little rushed for me but left me wanting more!

still loving this series

I loved the dynamics of the characters, it’s took me a while to get into this one. Then when things take off, and the love is there it ends. I actually I hate to say had to skim through some chapters because it was a little boring. I wish something along the lines of justice would have happened to yams! The disrespect was very loud, and wish Rori would have just once slapped the taste out of her and that dirty fiancé. Nothing really moved me, but I love how there was talk about mental health awareness.

disappointing)contains spoilers)

The book was ok unfortunately at the end I realised that we were being gaslit.
For most of the book we were led to believe that Monty was just a dog and poor Rori was being humiliated just because.
Even when Tatum’s grandmother ask her point blank about children, she doesn’t mention that she doesn’t want kids.
The relationship with Tatum stayed very much at surface level without any deep conversation, in particular the crucial kid one.
It’s only in the virtual last page that we really get to understand what went wrong with Monty. Yes he was wrong to basically check out, however Rori was also wrong and she didn’t try to sort out anything but instead stayed and played victim. To be honest, I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if the author got Rori and Monty work together, explore his CTE and find solutions to have a family. Obviously Yams and her baby would have to go to her real baby daddy.

Free Agent

This was yet another great read by CCJ and another great addition to the Connecticut Kings universe.

I hated how long Rori stayed around after so many public cases of disrespect with Monty, but I’m glad she met Tatum and connected with him on a night that should have been special for her, but was slightly tainted by more of Monty’s foolishness. Monty had all the audacity in thinking that he could continue to do his dirt and Rori wouldn’t reach her breaking point. That breaking point led to her entertaining and being comforted by Tatum.

Tatum and Rori had some amazing chemistry and their interactions kept me smiling. I loved how they just vibed and had fun together but were also able to open up together. Meeting Tatum’s family was an added bonus and Grandma Jenny kept me laughing with her Ms. Steal Yo Girl energy.

This was a definite must read with Rori and her lover girl energy and Tatum and his not giving a care about inconsequential people like Monty and shooting his shot and making sure he was consistent in his dealings with Rori.

Started Strong. 3.5 Is Where It Ended

I really liked Rori and Tatum as characters. Rori was a smart tech mogul who admittedly did let a man play in her face way too long, but stayed done once she was done. I liked that. Then Tatum's BDE was everything, and the bedroom scene with him, Rori and Monty, had me literally laughing out loud. That's the thing about CCJ, she is going to have you sniggling and giggling while you get lost in her storyland. This storyline was interesting and was quite detailed in some chapters but it still unfortunately felt rushed and unfinished- especially with the absence of an epilouge. It just ended, mid conversation with several loose ends. I hate that. I also didn't like that the word "weird" was used a ridiculous amount of times to describe every person, place and thing- it started to irk my nerves. Overall, this book had a lot of the ingredients for a 5 star experience, but it fell short with the rushed ending and the lack of other descriptive adjectives.

I NEED MORE ASAP!!!!!

this book NEEDS to be longer!!! i NEED more!! when i tell you i was not able to put this book down for a second, i damn near pulled an all nighter (well i actually did🤭) but that’s neither here nor there. the plot, the storytelling, the everything was amazing!! Tori deserves a man who is 100% sure about her who 100% adores her and will 100% NOT cheat on her based of some bs reasons. yes, Monty was her first love but he was truly not worth a damn. him and that damn Yams (btw what grown woman goes by that name anyway😒) Tatum on the other came into her life and showed her what being treated like the queen she is is supposed to feel like. he showed her how a REAL man treats his woman. 10/10 book boyfriend behavior 🙂‍↕️ what i was disappointed by tho was the fact that there was no epilogue. Christina girl why you left us hanging like that after Tatum dropped the bomb he just did. at least tell me there will be more bc i will NOT be able to rest😭🥹 when i saw ‘the end’ i was like “wdym ‘the end’” i was HURT you hear me😭😩 but i LOVED THE BOOK!!!

Free Agent Vibes

I really enjoyed this story and the connection that we saw book between Rori and Tate, and I always enjoyed the secondary lives and characteristics that CCJ builds into her stories that flesh out the characters. I LOVED the banter and chemistry between these two! It was definitely my favorite thing about this story. I also really liked that we got to see the emotional whirlwind of a woman finally choosing herself over a placeholder of a relationship, but also how scary and daunting it was even with a great and genuine man at her side. There were some editing issues that really bugged me. Kevion misspelled as Kevin, Rori referred to as Ms. Martin when her last name is Mitchell and ‘s brother in law’s name randomly changing from Daniel to Dennis. Other than that, the story was fun and not too heavy while still conveying the depth of how much state and Rori came to care about each other.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5

Rori’s man is out doing what he does best…embarrassing TF out of her. And sis has finally reached her breaking point. After a couple of run-ins with Tatum, Rori decides to get over Monty by getting under Tatum. And petty ass Tatum was happy to oblige. What starts out as a quick lil “lick back” turns into a situationship that neither one of them wants to admit may be a little bit more.

I loved:
The storyline…I’m all for getting your lick back sis!
The friendships & strong family support
The fact that we got an NFL lineman as a MMC ( I love a big man)
Chapter 17 in its entirety tickled me!!

However, there was a lot of time jumps that chopped up the story a bit, Monty was just a fckn mess, and the ending had me tight because huh?

Hopefully we get an update or a quick novella to catch us up on Rori & Tatum’s romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of my favorite sub-tropes is “lick back.” Just knowing the FMC would be getting her lick back was enough to read this one. And CCJ did not disappoint, and per usual it was so much more than just a romance. To the point that at the end, I still didn’t like him- but I had some empathy for Monty. Which as I think back, it was clear from his very casual demeanor toward what he was doing; something was off. Initially it seemed he was trying to pull a Neo or Omarion, iykyk. But I think the author left room for there to be another explanation, without saying either way.

In the end, I loved Tatum. I wish I had a Tatum. He was big stepping behind Aurora and she deserved all of it. The flow of the story and their relationship was well written and perfection. I could’ve read on and on.

Book 10 in the CK Series

What's not to love about these two! First I love how "free agent" refers to Rori and not Tatum as I assumed it would, ( you know what they say about assuming)! This was so delightful from Tatum noticing her beauty on the big screen, to her choosing herself and her happiness with their hook-up. The background stories of both the heroine and the hero so well developed I felt like they were friends who's love I was rooting for.... So many laugh out loud moments. I loved that she didn't give him any pushback when he defined what they were going to be to each other. The sex was so intimate and hot! This journey was soft and sweet. (It reminds me of Will and Ramsey.....how easy the love developed). This was a good read!

What one man won’t, another MAN will!!

Rori has had it with her fiance’s philandering. He’s constantly in headlines embarrassing her. Even on her “special day”, he’s out with side pieces, but sending her gifts. As if materials could make up for years of a broken heart.

By chance, she meets Tatum or “Country Boy Tate” to his football fans. Immediately, they are both awestruck, but it’ll take a moment of revenge to actually get Rori to give him time. That time turns into more time, and she struggles with her past relationship interfering with her something new.

Baby this book had me in an uproar. Monty had some kind of nerve and Rori just wasn’t doing enough for me. But honey, Tate was with the sh!ts and he was giving to Monty every chance he got. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Rightfully so!

Superb Story!

As a female that love football, always enjoy Ms.Jones Connecticut Kings series. Each storyline is different, with the emphasis on women who are misunderstood, waiting on their “person.” Love me some Tatum and Aurora, her supporting family, friends and staff. Monty is a nasty piece of work, wanted to see karma deal with him and the side piece, especially wanted to see Tatum and Aurora rub it in their faces, that which Monty desperately wanted from Aurora. I wish the Kings would have a winning season, all the way to the superbowl.
Five ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ no errors and superb story,as always.

I would say CCJ did it again, but that would be a gross underrepresentatioj of this book. Rori is a STEM girly who can code her own app but can't code her way into a healthy relationship with her fiancé. His name is irrelevant because he fumbled the ball with her one too many times, and she decided to be a free agent. When she meets Tatum, she enters a negotiation process because the strength of their chemistry makes them the perfect team mates. CCJ loves to build a world but get to the point, so there's no extra fluff. Every word was necessary, and there's no feeling of something missing. I thought both characters were well rounded, and she gave her readers enough backstory to enter the book as a standalone and not feel like something was missed.

Freeish

She had no choice but to be free even though she would’ve rather held on to her love, the history, and the connection even though those things no longer had no currency.
She was forced into freedom. It was choose herself or continue to suffer through embarrassment, disrespect, ridicule, shame, and misery. Who wants to live like that because of choosing to hold on to someone who continued to show you that they are incapable of loving you properly, selfish, a heaux, and inconsiderate.
I’m always team get your lick back! And baby she got her a country born and bread buck immediately! No to free time!

I enjoyed this read!

not ready

I was so into this story that I had no idea it was ending. Rori was such a sweetheart. Her trauma was sad but she was able to take that sadness and make something awesome out of it. Too bad we don’t know if karma was able to get a hold of Yams and Jay.
Tatum was the answer to Rori’s love question. I love his country ways. This one touched on and educated us on a lot of deep topics. I was in awe at some of the things discussed. Thanks for the information.
Great book.

Happy Reading‼️

LOVED EVERY SECOND!!! No unnecessary miscommunication. When there was confusion, it was legit. No immaturity no confusion . Just adults doing adult things and having adult conversations. They were being cautious, but never wavered. For those who like a bunch of filler of nonsense , you will not like this book . There was definable DRAMA, but not from our couple. For me , I love when the usual book mold is broken and a relationship develops with out typical low self esteem or wishy-washy characters. Just a grown book and I loved it.

Yesss CCJ!

A full novel of heartbreak, romance, serious issues in the real world, and funny!!! I loved this book!! Tater is now on my list of my fav CCJ male characters (Nixon is still my fav 🤭). This book hit home in a way that we think we’re helping the situation by going with the flow of a dead end relationship just because you were with the person for so long. There were a few grammatical errors but I don’t care!! CCJ is one of my favs so we living with it over here! In my country voice…gone head na CCJ!! ❤️ Keep up the great work!
