"Something should happen: a thunderbolt should erupt, a car should crash, a bell should ring. There should be a soundtrack—some horrible, frightening sound to accompany the news of your ex-boyfriend marrying one of your best friends from high school. Especially when you're still in love with him."

No, of course she wasn't going. Are you insane? For 29-year-old academic Mina Joseph, going to Luke's destination wedding to the venomous Ella Hutchinson would be the ultimate act of lunacy. It would be much safer to stay in her small studio in Boston so she could stalk the Facebook pages of the bride, groom, and every other guest in attendance before falling asleep in a box of tears and Wheat Thins.

But Luke's best man, the insufferably charming Benjamin Fogarty, has different plans for Mina. Both desperate to break up the mismatched couple before they say their "I do’s” and convinced that Luke is still in love with Mina (though he can’t figure out why), Ben offers her a plane ticket and a wad of cash to come out of hiding to seduce the groom.

Armed with a new wardrobe, devious friends, and copious amounts of tequila, Mina has five days to rekindle her love with Luke, expose Ella for the certifiable psychopath that she is, and at all costs, avoid having sex with the best man, regardless of how hot it could be.

Emily Poule was born in the most unremarkable city in Iowa with a peculiar propensity towards practicality. She saved every bit of her allowance, stayed in to study on the weekends, collected figurines of small animals, sketched pictures of potted plants, and read period romance novels of the Julia Quinn variety. Then, in her very first semester as a PHD student, she did the least rational thing she could think of --- she dropped out to write chick lit. After some stints as a barista, tutor, and professional dog walker, she finally got her footing as a free-lance writer and hasn’t looked back since. These days, she splits her time between Dublin and Chicago in search of functional Wi-Fi, attractive men, and coffee strong enough to caffeinate an Indian Elephant. She still collects figurines.

Mehhh. This book was quite funny. But I was disappointed in the ending. It just kind of ended. I hate it when the main character and her love interest don't resolve their "issues" until the last few pages. I need more closure than that.

And this book needs some serious editing. Usually I can look past editing issues, but this was bad. Characters' names being misspelled, paragraphs that were repeated, etc.

I enjoyed this book, although I had mixed feelings because I felt that the H was simply too mean. The h probably needed some counseling because she really had terrible taste in men and she was pretty much delusional about the OM.

It doesn't look like this author has written anything else, which is too bad.

I'll say it, I want to marry this book! One of the better books I've read this year. I have a feeling that it will blow all my future reads out of the water. It was not only fun and witty, but also emotional. I felt like I was sucked into one amazing romantic comedy. One that I would watch again and again. You might actually see me reciting all the best lines while reading it as well. This was one epic reunion of friends, lovers, and the ultimate family. These characters either were either going to pull you away from stepping in front of a bus or push you in front of it. Luckily these characters had no problem rolling with the punches because in the end the prize was so much greater. What would you do to erase your mistakes for your first love?

We meet Mina in the beginning of the book she is working on her PH.D and just trying to get through each day without tripping over her own feet. To top things off she receives a wedding invitation to her ex Lucas and high school friends wedding in Costa Rica. Incidentally Mina's dream wedding, but Lucas isn't marrying Mina he's marrying someone else. Mina is still in love with Lucas and has no intention of attending the joyous affair. Then he shows up, Ben who is Lucas' best friend and the guy in high school who annoyed her to no end. He has a proposition for Mina, he will help her break up the wedding and all she has to do is accept. Ben thinks Lucas is making a huge mistake and is even willing to pretend he is in a relationship with Mina to show Lucas that Mina won't be waiting in the wings any more. Mina and Ben begin their ridiculous pairing and even their friends wonder if it's for real. But could these two possibly fall for each other while Mina is trying to win back her first and only love?

Yes, I fell in love with Ben he was everything that I loved and yet everything I was afraid of at the same time. He was smart but the depth of his personality was one I was instantly addicted to. Mina wasn't your typical woman she loved and lost. Then she was given this opportunity and although she was pushed into it she had the support from her closest friends. What true friend wouldn't tell you to give up on true love? Lucas was hopelessly in love with Mina, but sometimes things just don't work out like we plan. This may sound like a love triangle but was far from one. It was a reunion of the past. One full of revelations and new beginnings.

Best part of this book was the dialogue between these friends. They all knew each other so well. They could relive the past and be close again. The shenanigans were beyond hilarious and I was a bit envious of all their fun. Honestly if Mina was going to embark on a do or die situation she was definitely surrounded by the perfect people.

I will positively recommend this book. This book gave me everything that I was looking for and so much more. I wasn't sure if Emily was going to break my heart in the end or build it up. It was far from predictable. A smart, fun, enjoyable, and highly emotional book that you will sure to fall in love with. I can't wait to read more from this author and will surely be reading this again.

There was a good concept here, but for me that got buried under all of the mess.

Complaints:
-Everyone was really catty and mean to each other pretty much all the time
-Too much drama (adding in the Ben told Luke to break up with Mina at the end, for example, was unnecessary)
-Luke was pretty much the worst
-For a one dimensional terrible mean girl, the mean girl apologizing re Ella was not awesome
-I didn't care much for any of the characters, including Ben and Mina
-The fact that Luke and Ella sort of got their own happy ending was pretty much what sold the one star rating for me. By the end of the book, I needed them to be unhappy and not married instead of (presumably/eventually) unhappy and married
-The drowning incident
-The poor writing and weird POV switches (that sometimes even started mid paragraph)

I am plotting in my head how to redo this as the romcom I deserve.

In Here for the Cake we meet Mina, whose life is turned upside down when she receives an invitation to her ex-boyfriend, Luke’s, wedding. As if the fact that Luke is marrying one of Mina’s old friends from high school isn’t bad enough, there’s also the fact that she’s never really got over him. Ambling through life and with absolutely no intentions of attending the wedding in Costa Rica, Mina is eventually bribed into going by Luke’s best friend and also best man, Ben. You see Ben has a plan...of sorts. He doesn’t want Luke marrying Ella; he knows it’s a mistake and that Luke is still actually in love with Mina. His big idea involves Mina attending the Wedding, looking gorgeous and also pretending to be his girlfriend. Once Luke sees them together he will be overcome with jealousy and instantly realise what a big mistake he’s making...right?
Of course things aren’t that simple and Ben and Mina’s mission to sabotage Luke and Ella’s wedding doesn’t quite go to plan. Que bitchy Bridesmaids, potentially drowning Brides, lots of romance and fights in canoes.
I loved the storyline for Here for the Cake. It grabbed me right away; after all who hasn’t been idly walking through life when suddenly something makes you stop and ask yourself ‘what if?’ The storyline itself lived up to all of my expectations but there was so much more to this story than I anticipated. Firstly, I expected a bit of humour, purely based on the storyline, but this story was so, so much more hilarious than imagined. It is guaranteed to have you laughing out loud (so beware if reading in a public place!) There are one or two especially comical scenes, one of my favourites being when the girls went canoeing. The dialogue is packed full of witty one liners too.
My favourite thing about Here for the Cake would have to be the characters. I adored Mina, she made for a great central character and had so much more to her than meets the eye. I also loved her best friend, Josie. Not afraid to say it how it is Josie definitely had some of the best of those witty one liners! Friendship is a prominent theme in this novel and the relationship between Mina, Josie and Luke’s sister, Salma, demonstrates this so well. Theirs is one friendship group I would definitely like to be a part of, and it’s touching how loyal and protective they are of one another. They get up to some pretty exciting shenanigans too.
Ella and her cronies are the perfect characters you’ll love to hate and I found Ben to be a really intriguing character. I couldn’t help but like him, even though I sometimes felt that I shouldn’t. He’s full of charisma and personality and there’s such great banter between him and Mina. I couldn’t make my mind up about Luke however and I didn’t really warm to him. I just found myself frustrated and disbelieving of his decision and behaviour on Mina and Ben’s behalf.
The other aspect of this story I really enjoyed was that you can never be quite sure which direction it’s going in. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen...boom...everything’s up in the air again. It kept me guessing which I really liked and added to my eagerness to race through to the end to see how things would work out.
This is a really smart, warm and witty story. At times it’s emotional, engaging, honest and completely hilarious. Brilliantly written with a fabulous cast of characters, Here for the Cake is the perfect escapist read, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Review: Here For The Cake by Emily Poule

Here For The Cake was just what the doctor ordered! A deliciously fun, exciting and hilarious read with fantastic characters and a fabulous and conniving storyline. I absolutely loved it!

Mina Joseph is an academic, studying and assisting at Boston University. Since the tragic dumping by the love of her life, Luke, who is now getting married to one of her "friends from high school", mega bitch Ella, in Mina's dream location, Costa Rica; Mina has buried her head in her study, forever pining over him, never being able to let go.
When an invitation to the wedding arrives, Mina dismisses it. But when Luke's best friend Ben drops by and offers her a plane ticket and spending money for a makeover in the hopes of breaking up the wedding, by showing Luke what he let go, Mina only needs a little encouragement to agree to go along. If worst comes to worst she gets a free holiday with her 2 besties, Josie and Salma and a hot new look and wardrobe.
What happens next is an unbelievably excellent story of deceit, romance, hope and longing, with a truck load of frivolous fun, laughter and a bloody awesome ending.

What a cast of characters! I think I've fallen in love with them all! Especially Mina, Josie & Ben.
Mina isn't like most leading ladies. She isn't a dickhead who makes ridiculously stupid mistakes that you just want to slap her for; she doesn't play the victim, she is a strong admirable woman who just needs closure so she can move on with her life. Bestie #1 Josie, is an absolute firecracker and someone I'd want in my corner! The stuff that comes out of her mouth had me literally laughing out loud, to the point I was worried I was going to wake up my sleeping husband and kids. Just so freakin' funny!
Bestie #2, Salma (Luke's older sister), was the pacifier of the trio, but she was a little pocket rocket herself, and such a loving and caring friend.
Luke is so mixed up. He clearly has feelings for Josie but is adamant that marrying Ella is the right thing to do. I only felt sorry for him a little bit.
Ella is a....(I've got to watch my language here) crazy MOLE!!! (the skin growth, not the animal). What a piece of work! She is one stuffed-up (see how I censored it!) individual! The level to how low she could stoop totally added to the twisted story!
And last but not least, Ben. He's a male slut and proud of it! But what a guy! His humor and hubris were just do damn charming! And that wit! He was to die for!

One thing I particularly enjoyed was what was going on in the background of this novel; so much detail with all the dirty little side stories of all of the "high society" guests, I just couldn't get enough! The setting was beautifully described, leaving me with a vivid picture in my mind.

Here For Cake would have to be the BEST "chic lit" book I've ever read. It is a feel-good book that all though had some sad parts, was a fantastically uplifting story. Excellent writing Ms. Poule! I can't wait to read more of your work!

4.5 took me by surprise stars!! I want more please!

Here for the Cake is one of those books that you find and are BLOWN away with how funny, witty, emotional and just wonderful it is. When I was asked to review this book for Emily Poule I knew I would enjoy this story but as it turns out I LOVED this story! I could not stop reading this, I found myself squeezing in a few pages or just a chapter waiting in lines, at carpool and while my kids were eating breakfast. Emily Poule took romantic comedy and knocked it out of the park!

Here for the Cake was funny, in a fantastic snarky/witty humor that had me waiting to see what else would come out of these characters mouths! I actually choked on my drink and laughed out loud more than once. I fell in love with the writing style and all the crazy characters in this book right off the bat. Emily Poule's flow, pacing and comedic timing were a perfect especially when combined with this grand-gesture scheme that Ben and Mina are about to embark on.

What made this book was the characters! It starts off simple; Ben sweet talking Mina to come to Costa Rica and break up his best friends wedding/her ex-boyfriend's wedding but once this ball gets rolling the madcap adventures begin and the addition of a handful of amazing characters are added to the mix and we get Here for the Cake. Silly me thought this book would be a predictable story with a bit of humor and I was wrong! Just when you think something is going in one direction, Emily Poule surprises us and add new layers to the story! Here for the Cake is a book that you need to read! Emily Poule pulled off a book that is not only funny but emotion-envoking, it is about friendship, learning to let go and discovering that sometimes the only thing you need to make you happy is to accept who you are and realize that it is OK to want/need more from your life.

I can't say enough about this book! I can't wait to see what Emily Poule writes next! I really hope it is another story with some of the characters from Here for the Cake!

If you are in the mood for something funny, kind of crazy with a cast of characters that you can't help but fall in love with, then Here for the Cake is the perfect book for you! Emily Poule is an author to keep and eye on, I have a feeling we will be hearing about her a lot in the future!

5 mouthful of cake!!
this one is already in my fave book!
it was fun but there was more like emotional, open minded, loss, standing up and love.
the greatest love in here was giving everything for someone. but that greatest love was the one that could put down a man.
There was also about choice, different kind of love. what lead you. what make you feel worth it and being the whole universe vs being in love a love that hurt. than came, figure when to let go, why and what went wrong when it was too late because of the choices you made.
it was a battle but no one won but only accept the choice and understood. it was an experience for both party. one to embrace, being a man, seeing the kind of love you could give to a woman that make you a better man to have goal anf being challenge and in the other hand fighting for what you want, no pride for feeling and understand loved and love.
I felt sad, angry, understanding and despised toward Luke. I understood his point, he really wanted. he know what he left behind, the sacrifice. but what he got was the universe because someone was willing to give him everything include love with no end. so that something no anyone could have and he knew how lucky and felt toward Ella. so in the end the choice.
As for the others characters, they made the book, the story.
what a great story with so much depht and also made me laugh.

The title of this book makes you thing it will be another story about a happy bride dealing with the woes before the wedding. Which this book is far from! This is a story about a wonderful amazing unique girl, a nerdy lost in her books girl who doesn't know how to move on past her high school boyfriend who's wedding invitation to her best friend shows up to remind her she's really not over him.

That beginning sounds like a silly romance story gone wrong. But honestly throughout the story there is a depth that is often hidden under the surface. Which makes this a unique and lovable story.

I enjoyed each and every character in the story. Some like Ella and Cynthia and the other snotty ladies I loved to hate, but I also could not get enough of Mina and Josie and Shelma and even Simon and Ben. Truly each character was developed and very real to me.

The story itself isn't what I found unique. Girl gets dumped by high school boyfriend ends up with the one of her supposed best friends and of course the awesome twist with the exes best friend...that I have read many times. But the individuals in the story is what makes this one so good!

Throughout the book I hoped for a certain ending to the story and strangely changed my mind about half way through. I absolutely loved the ending! I loved watching the characters grow and change throughout this story.

HERE FOR THE CAKE is a book that has every emotion in it and on almost every page! It was well-written and entertaining. I can't remember when I've been so entertained with one book. The book begins with a simple plot and then takes off in a romantic comedy that leaves the reader laughing and crying and cheering the characters on with every page. HERE FOR THE CAKE boasts an unpredictable plot and I loved that!

You have three friends who have made it their life's ambition - at least for a weekend - to save a friend from making the biggest mistake of his life. What happens is a week in a tropical paradise spent running from love, to love, and around love! I absolutely loved Salma and Josie and who wouldn't love to have them as best friends.

The characters are funny and outspoken - which I adored. One of the funniest adventures of the week was a scavenger hunt to find the bride, an adventure that brings out the worst and the best in all of the characters as well as a whole lot of truth. This is a great beach read or a Sunday afternoon on the swing read. I would love to see this book made into a movie.

Readers are guaranteed to laugh and cry in a matter of moments. i am giving HERE FOR THE CAKE five plus stars.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

I absolutely adored this book. It has been a long time since I laughed this much while reading. Here for the Cake managed to make me feel as if I was part of this wonderful trio of women. The loyalty they demonstrated was super sweet and I really loved reading about them. The author really puts you into the head of the main character. When Mina is coerced into attending the wedding of the former love of her life, I could feel the complete embarrassment she felt when she gets off the plane and thinks about going home. I practically cringed with her. And once the hijinks start, I was all aboard the sabotage train.

There are also plenty of steamy scenes that made me swoon. The leading man is that interesting combination of charming and protective, with just a side of *hole thrown in to keep things unpredictable. The two played off each other's wittiness perfectly. I was hooked once he entered the picture.

This was a great read and I'm excited to see what comes next from Emily!

WOW! PERFECT book! PERFECT title! This book had everything... humor, sweetness, jealousy and heartbreak,

Great retelling of an old story, of ex going to break up wedding to get groom for herself. Plenty of LOL parts. I love that Mina is a strong female character, in great company of unwavering, loyal friends, stumbling into a potential romance that she doesn't see coming. Luke was a douche and I wanted so much for him to figure out his self worth, for his and Mina's sake. The devil's in the details though, and Miss Poule leaves no stone unturned. She has thought all the characters through, and their intentions and motivations are fully realized and easily embraced. Would have loved to seen a more drawn-out HEA but the lack of it didn't leave me feeling too wanting. Hope there's a sequel...Would love to see how Luke is affected and has to deal with the choices he has made. I look forward to more from this author!

So much potential, but it just didn't get there. With all of the 5 star reviews, I almost wonder if I read the same book as everyone else. The errors were everywhere, be it grammatical or within the shaky plot. I mean, they were everywhere. One minute a character is clean shaven, the next time he looks in the mirror he has a beard. One minute his hands are in her pants, the next he's removing her dress. I'm giving it 2 stars because the dialogue between characters was funny at times. It's frustrating because with a solid group of betas and an editor, this could have been a solid 5 star read. But there were just to many errors to ignore.

Such a fantastic read. Emily hit it out of the park for her debut novel. It started out a bit slow for me. I found myself skimming quite a bit, but after the first 25% it got its groove back and I devoured every word. The writing is perfection and i was i. stitches countless times; very clever characters. Hilarious, sexy, and fun, this book was just what I needed after reading an emotional and dark book. 4.75 stars!!!!!!!

A-dor-able. The title is what caught my eye and then the story line pulled me in. Who doesn't enjoy a good love triangle? Especially one as cute and well executed as this one. The writing was quick and witty and it's always impressive when a book can make me laugh out loud. I loved that Mina was an average woman, intelligent but imperfect (although almost every other female in the book sounded like a Barbie doll). This was like My Best Friend's Wedding but realistic. I loved it.

This was an amazingly good book! Mina gets invited to her ex boyfriends wedding (not the best wedding invite to ever receive). Whats more is that he is getting married to one of her old school friends. I don't want to give too much away so please take my advice and read this book :-). Great summer read for sitting round a pool or at the beach. Definitely 5 stars from me.

I really liked this book it was a pleasant surprise! It was like the perfect romantic comedy, the story was sad yet funny and the ending felt real I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end the secondary characters were just amazing. I wanted more about their stories to see how their love life concluded.
Will definitely read other books from this author.

Such a great book! I loved Mina and Ben so much! Mina, Josie, and Salma are the funniest group of friends. They kept the book from getting too serious and making it even more enjoyable. Now for Luke I started out almost hating him for stringing Mina along for so long but in the end I just ended up feeling bad for him and just annoyed with him. Here for the Cake is definitely a must read!!

This book kind of dragged on. My biggest problem with it was the amount of errors. It read like fan fiction that needed some serious editing. Peoples outfits would change mid scene, names were changed, and paragraphs were repeated. Usually I can overlook a couple errors but this was terrible.

While this book was really funny most of the time, the members in the main love triangle (square?) were all raging assholes. Like, the MC was deceptively so, but she pulled so many asshole moves I just can't find it in me to like this book.
