Sam Hunter is a fiber artist and quilt designer who considers her sewing machine to be the Ultimate Power Tool. Sam started sewing when she was seven, and hasn't really stopped since.
Sam earned her MFA/Fiber in 2010 and is thrilled to have written her last ever term paper. The fact that she gleefully escaped formal academia only to then write a book is a situation whose irony is not lost on her.
Sam launched Hunter's Design Studio, her pattern design company, in 2011, and is the Word Girl behind the Sew Sassy designs. She is a fun and humorous speaker, and loves to teach our newbies and up-and-comers.
Sam is also passionate about the value of art and craft, and is leading the charge of the We Are $ew Worth It campaign. You can reach her at www.huntersdesignstudio.com.
I've been wanting to learn foundation paper piecing and bought this when it went on sale. It is a cute book and I do think I can use her intro instructions to figure out how to do the technique. The sample projects are very cute and I like her writing style.
That said, I do not think this is a very good place to begin for someone like me. The patterns are quite complicated and have many small pieces. There's math to increase or decrease the size. It's all too much. I will save this for later. One other thing that disappointed me is that there is no pocket attached to the cover. Once you remove the pattern pieces for photocopying, there's no easy way to store them. Usually when I buy a book with templates or patterns it has an envelope page or one attached to the cover for storing the cut templates.
I bought the e-book for the alphabet patterns which are very nice. The book is thorough and well laid out. I would NOT recommend, however, that a beginner to foundation paper piecing learns on these letters. They are fairly detailed and so have small pieces with some complexity. I like the book but it includes a tutorial in paper piecing and I just do not think this alphabet is the place for a beginning paper piecer. Learn on something simpler or at least bigger and then come to this book for the alphas!
Straight and to the point. Enjoyed the tips for selecting fabric and testing patterns. There are a lot of ideas for projects in this book and the applications of lettering and writing to a fabric world was good to see. A straight-forward introduction to paper piecing was also helpful.
What a wonderful book!!! You can DO so much more with the info from this book than just the examples Sam gives you. She didn't waste book space on "how to quilt". Seriously there are enough books and classes for that. Why waste space? Give me more info. YAY If your imagination can handle it you can create a quilt with ANY words on it you may want to create. MARVELOUS!!!
I absolutely LOVE this book! The ideas of how to plant words on my quilts is endless. I've seen some of these projects in person and seeing them makes my own ideas for quilts take OFF! Now, if I could only fold space and time to have MORE time to sew.
First off, I hate paper piecing, or else this would have more stars. But it is a very well done book, with fun ideas. I thought the instructions on how to paper piece were also very nicely done.
