Everyone has been anxiously waiting for the supply boat, but just as it's finally coming into view, Caroline realizes the ship is at risk. What can she do make sure the supplies arrive safely? Then, while helping on her uncle's farm, Caroline bravely keeps watch for a thief who has been stealing vegetables, and discovers that someone else needs her help. But when will she get to go home to Sackets Harbor?
I grew up in Maryland, in a house full of books! Both of my parents were avid readers, thank goodness. Before we traveled to a new area, my librarian-mom used to bring home historical novels set in that place. It was a great way to get excited about history.
I began writing stories when I was maybe 10 or 11. At 15 I wrote my first novel; I sold my first novel to a publisher 20 years later! Writing was my hobby, so during those two decades I just kept practicing, reading, writing some more. What a thrill to finally hold my first book in my hand! Still, I write because I enjoy the process (at least most of the time).
For years I wrote while working at other day jobs. I spent 12 years working at a huge historic site, which was a perfect spot for someone interested in historical fiction. I also developed and scripted instructional videos for public television. Finally, though, it got to be too much to juggle. I now write full-time, and consider myself enormously fortunate to do something I love.
Caroline Takes a Chance - Caroline, Seth, and Lydia are heading off on a fishing trip. They end up having to help with the war of 1812. Caroline is a sweet young lady. She always tries to help her family. I turn the story took, leading her off on a separate adventure.
Caroline’s Battle - The British are about to attack Caroline’s hometown. She and her mother ended up staying the night at the shipyard to protect it from the British. When morning comes they only had to burn one building. Caroline and her family survive another battle.
Changes for Caroline - Caroline’s uncle writes to ask for her to come to the farm to help her cousin. There is a thief in the area and the family has to watch out for who is taking their food and milk.
These three books were sweet and informative like all American Girl books. It doesn’t necessarily support war and is mostly against it. I’m so glad I’ve been revisiting American Girls from the newer eras, from when I was a kid.
I thought this one was very war-heavy. I did like it though. Battle scenes can definitely be hard to translate for kids and I think this one did it well. Caroline I do like as a character because she seems more mature and usually does what's right and is very honest. The last part seemed more like a mystery, but I also liked the gratitude I was reminded of.
Again, this book is basically a flow of the last three books. I liked how Caroline was willing to go to the farm and miss Independence Day in her hometown if it meant she was able to help her cousin.
A good set of stories featuring Caroline during the War of 1812 as she fights for what she believes and protects her family and friends against the British.
