Spurred by the 5 star reviews, I fell into this trap
Full disclosure: I did not like the second book. The first was entertaining enough, the second was middling & boring.
Null character development, any female character in this series is fawning over the MC, his only flaw is he’s not too bright. Yet his lack of intelligence isn’t written out, it’s more that there is no reflection, no character development for anyone. No growth except levels. No skills to learn beyond : “ He saw he could do it better so he did, he had the tools “ No grief, no drama, nothing apocalyptic or hard about the MC. I read the 5 star reviews saying it was boring yet enjoyable. I quit this book at 10%.
I know the story is already written, but it’s a shame that there is no challenge to spur the MC on, no enlightenment, no loss, and ugh Reina is the worst , most shallow “love interest.” Since is going to be a fixture, at least get more nuanced than: so good at organizing. A real power woman to everyone else; but melts in the real manly-man hunky-man of Zane and turns into a supple melted kitten version of herself.
good story and plot line keep writing as will keep reading
So good as someone who reads a lot of different books I always appreciate the stories when good Authors take the time too write stories that can come alive as you read them
At the end of the second book in the series Zane became ultra-powerful, so this book starts with him saving the world pretty much by himself. Every person on the planet is watching him. Everyone is crying from happiness when seeing him doing his heroic stuff, everyone is cheering and clapping. While everyone at this level is struggling to level up, he gets dozens of levels just by having sex with his girlfriend. What a secret technique, no doubt the rest of the world is not aware of such a grueling exercise method. Men want to be him, women want to be with him. This feels like reading some poorly translated Chinese light novel, they are all written poorly like that. I'm not sure if that is a self-insert fantasy of the writer or maybe the writer just knows his audience too well (which is kinda sad), but for me this is one of the worst books I've ever read in my life. Well, tried to read, I dropped that garbage after reading a few dozens of pages.
Side characters need more development and personality
Good book excellent series. This book falls short of five stars because of these reasons which, of course is only my opinion. First of all the MC has as much personality as a sponge. I don’t know why the author wrote him that way, but it is what it is. Secondarily the side characters Avery and Evan. Don’t hold their weight in battles in this series. The only side character that holds up is the MC‘s girlfriend. she also doesn’t pull her own weight as much as I think she should. The sidekick should be able to punch above their weight while traveling in dungeons just to take some of the pressure off the MC. The illusionist Avery has no offensive spells whatsoever, which makes her an albatross around Zane‘s neck. as far as the other side character is concerned is he on the spectrum? what’s his deal, why is he so shaky? My third complaint is that the rewards that are given out by the system because of interference seem quite poultry. For all the interference. That occurred all the characters should be well ahead of the game much more than they are after they leave the dungeon. those are my only complaints, the story is solid, but the MC has too much pressure put on him unrealistically as far as I’m concerned. it shouldn’t be the MC all the time, every once in a while, his sidekick should be able to step up and take some of the pressure off of him. This happened at the end of the book, but it should happen a bit more as far as I’m concerned. i’m still going to continue to support the author and read the continuing books of the series.
“You can never be too big” is one of Zane’s philosophies
Some old powerful beings haven’t put for Zane and Earth, but it seems they don’t have what it takes to stop him, even when they cheat. As the Super dungeon is meant as a great challenge they expect it to be tough, but what Zane and his friends are put through is considered an impossible challenge. They just have to survive to earn some amazing rewards, as the System doesn’t like those who muddle with its plans, sadly it’s unaware of much of what happens until afterwards when it would be too late. Sadly for those against Earth’s mightiest man, he has an unmatched willpower driving an unmatched soul in a body stuffed with essence… With Reina, Evan, and Avery supporting him, Zane will not fail, cannot fail, as the planet is depending on the Savage Sage to crush the dungeon and save Earth from being added to the super dungeon.
What! A! Blast! Adastra339 has pulled out all the stops in this pulse-pounding series! You'd think that by the third book it might start to slow down, or that maybe I'd start to tire of a very overpowered dungeon diver. But nah-ah I'ma still lovin it, because even though Zane levels the monsters are at higher levels. So Zane is still the Underdog! But his close knit team is nothing to sneer at, and the four of them support and protect each other. The way a Tank, Mage, Scout and Healer would! In this book Zane is working through his next bottleneck to build a strong core, once done he and his team will be ready to tackle the super dungeon. So yeah go grab the book and just enjoy yourself.
Here's a quote that amused me:
“There is another saying where I hail. The wise man takes no pleasure in the ruin of his enemies…” The faintest hint of a smile. “Alas. I fall short of wisdom."
Reina & Zane together is still of discomfort to me...
But she makes and keeps Zane happy and approachable to everyone else. Just hope she stays focused on him and never changes personality or attitude.
The series continues to produce intrigue, thrills, and laughter (Avery, Evan and Zane, the latter quite unintentionally, are hilarious), and the author has maintained the attention to detail and organization captured from the first book. Great series with an absolutely massive, most likable and heroic main character who has become everyone's champion. Four point five stars.
A steamroller of a story (and MC) with a blistering pace. As Earth is integrated, it finds Zane... a listless soul in search of physical challenges. Since integration, his intuition and single focus willpower drives him to overwhelm any challenge. He finds his calling.... Zane smash!
He learns a lot about himself and makes a number of good friends that help him overcome challenges. He even discovers "dual cultivation"
The challenges ramp up at a ridiculous rate, not just for Zane but all survivors on Earth.
As the legend grows, so does the man! Overall, the story is excellent. It is the typical struggle for supremacy story, where superior enemies try to stomp out the growth of this new and upcoming hero. But the overall story was pretty much just a dungeon crawl. If it wasn’t for all of the side stories of the observers, it might’ve been a bit boring. But the balance was perfect to make a great story.
This is the third book in a fantasy LitRPG series with a system apocalypse set on Earth. This book almost entirely focuses on Zane and friends working their way through a super dungeon. We start to learn much more about the wider universe as factions are able to watch Earth's progress and even send gifts.
I still have minor issues with various things built into the system and with Zane's rapid growth but I'm enjoying the series and will be continuing to the next book.
I can't do this anymore. Book 1 was great, book 2 was grating, book 3...aggghhhhhh
There's no character development. Like, at all. Every female character is beautiful and loves the mc. The mc's only character trait is that he's strong but dumb. His love intrest, Reina, is a stereotypical supportive gf ™️. Nobody grows except in strength, and every character feels like a caricature of themselves. I'm done.
There's something about a hero adventure story where the author just wants to have fun and not think too deeply that makes for a great magical escape potential. This book has just enough of a through-line to make the pacing and escalations work.
It's juvenile in the most satisfying way. The main character fits the naive but always succeeds archetype and the author is comfortable in the formulaic progression which works because the characters are endearing enough in their juvenileness.
My only 2 complaints are that Zane gets dumber & dumber in each book. (I get "keeping it simple", but he's losing substance, he's now on level with Evan, who is a supporting character, but is a puppy.) As he loses substance, and, "smashes or crushes", and takes a semi-sadistic pleasure in it, makes it a little creepy. (Hulk SMASH") OTHERWISE I'm enjoying the story. 😁 **Oh and nobody swims at the beaches in San Diego, except tourists. Polluted to the high heavens.
Here I am two weeks into finding this series and done with book 3. I love the character growth as a whole and the insane challenges they seem to constantly overcome. It is very reminiscent of defiance of the fall but Zane is more of a muscle man lug than a thinker. If the hulk was in the multiverse of a litrpg. Truly a great series so far. Off to book 4.
Zane continues onwards with his hulk smash personality. If you are looking for deep characterization it will not be found here. But you will find a fun read where our strong extremely silent type continues to dominate every challenge coming his way. Will be jumping on the next when it comes out!
If you like a great story about an undefeated hero then this book and series is for you! Lots of action, great characters, some good humor and lots of plot twists thrown in. I was impressed by the quality of the writing and I have read hundreds of LitRPG books in the last few years!
Do you remember reading a progression fantasy or litrpg for the first time and feeling hyped about a character's growth? The third installment of this series delivers that 100x over and it hits every time
Really great story building and bringing in where the author is taking the characters. All books are fast paced and hard to find a stopping point where it slows down.
Every book just gets better and better. Non stop action and can hardly put the book down. Been aw while since I have enjoyed a series like this. Looking forward to the next one .
I just love this series and am off to read the next book this instant. If you are looking for a smashing good, fast paced, cultivation fantasy then this is the series to read. It's spectacular.
Most series over time get boring. They have filler or transition books where not much happens - That ain’t this series. From start to finish is a rollicking good time
The retribution was my favorite! Uhhhh not sure which faction I want Zane to go to though. Anyway as far as reviews go this was a great addition to the series! I highly recommend everyone to stop and read this series. I wish this could be turned into a Webtoon!
Fun read, awesome character development and great pacing. I really liked the questing and the dungeon crawls with rewards and the build up to the greater universe coming to earth.
Sad it ended and can't wait for the next one. The pacing of this series is perfect for me. Things move along quickly and the change in perspective is done for well.
