Anacostia Miller has done it again! I loved the first book in this series and I recommended it too lots of people and 'The Monarchs' is a worthy sequel to 'the last leviathan'! I love a good love story, found family and great worldbuilding. And this book has all of that. The story is great as well! I loved that Ronin and Mae came out stronger after going through very tough times. And that all of the crew will give Ronin a piece of their minds. What an ending again though.. Can't wait for the next book!
Thankful to have gotten an ARC copy of this book. Not exaggerating even a little bit when I say that there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t thought of these characters and this world since the day I started the first book in this series, The Last Leviathan. I was constantly checking social media for updates about when the ARC copies for The Monarchs were going to be sent out, so it’s no surprise that I started reading it pretty much immediately, but between focusing on the audiobooks I listened to during my work day, and simply wanting to expand the time I spent in this world, it took me awhile to finish it. It also happens to be a good bit longer than the first book!
The Last Leviathan was full of action, adventure, tension, romance, and of course spice, and The Monarchs somehow amps it up on all of those fronts while simultaneously being a feel good story focused on world building.
The first book in the series did a great job at making you feel like you really knew the characters, and quickly become attached to them, while other books often struggle with that. In this sequel, you get to do that all over again with heaps of new characters, as well as dive even deeper into the existing characters backstories and personalities.
Once again, Miller does a great job at providing the reader with questions to propel the story further and keep you turning the page, then actually answering them, but ultimately leaving you with even more questions. It’s very clear that she puts a lot of love and time into her writing.
I screamed too many times to count! Both from excitement, and fear lol.
A perfect sequel! Will once again be counting down the days until the next book!!!
- Morgan Jewel Sawan aka the self appointed actress of Mae in the inevitable future tv show of this series🖤
The Monarchs picks up right where The Last Leviathan left off, with Maeve and Ronin escaping the harrowing confines of Farlight Prison. Now, they face an even greater challenge—uniting the pirate monarchs of the Farlight Isles to stand against Varric's impending war. As the duo travels across the Isles, the story's world-building shines brighter than ever, weaving a richly detailed tapestry of history, culture, and the intricate workings of this captivating world. Each new location felt vivid and immersive, drawing me in completely.
But it’s not just the world-building that levels up—the emotional depth of this book far surpasses the first. Through the dual POV, we are thrust into the raw, heart-wrenching struggles of both Maeve and Ronin as they wrestle with identity crises, heartbreak, depression, and the PTSD born from their encounters with Varric. Watching them endure, clash, and ultimately learn the mechanisms to heal and move forward was equal parts painful and empowering.
When it comes to romance, buckle up for a wild ride! Maeve and Ronin’s journey is a rollercoaster of emotions, with moments of miscommunication that might test your patience early on. But trust me, the payoff is so worth it. And yes, the spice? It's fiery hot!
Second books often run the risk of falling short, but The Monarchs defies that trend spectacularly. I adored it even more than the first. The cliffhanger ending? Absolute chef's kiss! I cannot wait until The Sentry releases—I need answers, and I need them now!
Thank you Anacostia Miller and Hot Tree Publishing to the opportunity to read this ARC.
Anacostia Miller continues Mae and Ronin’s story in Book 2, “The Monarchs.” Anacostia's writing creates a vivid story filled with angst, witty dialogue, action, and well-written, steamy scenes. And the steamy scenes were certainly ramped up with this one. Readers will follow Mae and Ronin’s relationship as many things interfere with it, as well as Mae’s quest to get answers about herself. But it wouldn’t be a series without a cliffhanger! And oh, what a cliffhanger it is.
Thank you, Hot Tree Publishing and Author Anacostia Miller, for the gifted advance reader copy of “The Monarchs.” I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Colorful world-building and deep emotional turmoil in a fiery pirate romance.
After narrowly escaping Farlight Prison, Maeve and Ronin must unite the pirate monarchs of the Farlight Isles before Varric's war reaches their shores. While Ronin struggles with both physical injuries and the psychological scars of his time under Nathaniel Pike's control, Maeve embarks on a quest to uncover the truth about the lies Varric fed her. As they journey to remote corners of the Isles, their bond is tested by dangerous encounters with merrows, salty sea creatures, and ruthless pirates. With each new revelation, Maeve’s memories resurface, and the pressure on their relationship intensifies. Can their love survive the weight of their trauma, or will it crumble under the strain?
The world-building expands dramatically as we journey through the dominions of each pirate lord. Each new locale is brought to life with rich detail, customs, ceremonies, and histories that add layers to the already immersive world. I loved experiencing these diverse cultures, especially as we see the pirate lords fight to protect their domains from the looming threat of Cross. The stakes feel higher, and the sense of each lord’s responsibility and legacy really shines through.
The emotional complexity of this book outshines the first. PTSD, depression, heartbreak, and the looming dread of war are explored in a way that is heart-wrenching. The dual POVs of Ronin and Mae provide insight into their respective emotional struggles and watching them come head-to-head with their inner demons was nothing short of powerful. Watching them navigate their individual battles, while learning to understand each other’s pain, adds depth to their relationship.
The intensity between Ronin and Mae only heightens as they find themselves using each other as both a comfort and a coping mechanism. The romance - raw, heated, and often complicated - explores some deliciously spicy moments, and once they begin healing, things really take a wild turn. The exploration of new kinks in their relationship is fitting for the emotional growth they experience.
The ending left me completely on edge. With stakes higher than ever, major secrets and truths are revealed, leaving readers desperate for the next installment. The tension and cliffhanger were so well done, I cannot wait until the release of book three, The Sentry.
The Monarchs by Anacostia Miller is a captivating read from start to finish! The storytelling is rich and engaging, with beautifully developed characters and a plot that keeps you hooked.
It skillfully navigates PTSD and trauma within relationships, portraying the complexities of healing and emotional struggle in a realistic and sensitive way.
I thought the sequel to The Leviathan was done really well, and has me desperate to know what the next book brings!
I highly recommend for anyone looking for an emotional and thought-provoking book!
Thank you to Hot Tree Books for the eARC of this book!
The first 100 pages were painful to get through. Miscommunication ran rampant. Sex scenes (which I skipped) that happened while both sides were too angry to commit. Not romantic. Also, not all of them started with direct consent. Some of the characters would just be chilling then the other one was like BAM I WANT YOU NOW. I'm not big on sex scenes. I skim them. I want plot. I want pirates.
Either I didn't know how to read when I read the first one because I rated it five stars, or this one has a severe quality control issue. It just wasn't very good. I was bored. I took me since last year to finish it!! (hehe new years joke)
I think it picked up in the middle and a bit at the end, but the ending also came out of nowhere. Spoilers ahoy, but the part about death seemed to come from nowhere. The sentry bit had some foreshadowing, but I didn't really fully understand it. You're also making me realize that when Mae first lived, she was 19 when her love interest was maybe 5? I get that she took a break from living, but that's weird, right? Also isn't she the little girl? Was she reborn? I simply do not understand. Maybe I misunderstood.
Will I read and request the next one? Probably. Will I also probably end up buying these books to reread the first one to fact-check myself? Also, yes. But this is more a 2.5 star. Rounding up to be nice 🫡
Just finished reading The Monarchs, book 2 in The Guardians of Farlight Isles Series!
Ronin must prepare for war, but first he must defeat the battle in his head.
This story dove into the main characters' emotions and insecurities, making them feel like normal people, especially Ronin. We learned some of the crew members' backstories, which was pretty cool, and got to see more of their familial bond.
Maeve's punk-ass adopted dad is back 🤣, and he's up to no good, as usual. But what does he want? How does he plan on getting it? And how can Maeve and Ronin stop him?
(I'm warning you now, this book is spicier than The Last Leviathan 🥵. Ronin is definitely into some freaky shit...😯😅)
Random thought: Without giving away any potential spoilers, I'm beginning to think Maeve is lowkey a Phoenix...👀 (Wait...did I guess that after reading book 1? My memory is shot.)
Thank you Anacostia Miller and Hot Tree Publishing for the ARC! I'm already looking forward to reading book 3...because you didn't have to leave me hanging like that...😩😆
We pick up right where The Last Leviathan left us, with the crew escaping Cross and going home. We see Mae trying to deal with the information she gained while rescuing Ronin. And we see Ronin not dealing well with his month-long t0rture. We see him using questionable coping techniques to try to get over it with Mae, sadly to her detriment. She is willing to participate though, as long as she can be close to him and help him get better. Sadly things come to a head when they get home, Ronin uses Mae again and kicks her out of his home. And his mates are NOT on his side on this.
Getting Ronin's POV chapters was critical during this part of the book. We see his self-destructive thoughts, wanting Mae to be close and love him while also being disgusted with himself for not being able to save her. He feels that he doesn't deserve her and so by pushing her away he will be able to keep her safe. He's wrong, and he's acting like a huge prick during this part of the story, but hurt people will hurt people. Ever so slowly, Ronin opens up to Mae about how he feels and what happened to him and begs her forgiveness.
Other than his mental state, we see him physically changed from during The Last Leviathan and being unable to shift his form to his leviathan. While they travel to the pirate monarchs to get them to all join forces against Pike and Cross, we see Ronin doubt his ability to get them to agree since he doesn't feel like the king he needs to be. When he opens up to his mother about this, luckily she is able to sway the noise in his head.
"Do you think the dragon makes the king? ... I didn't raise you to be a leviathan. I raised you to be a good man. That is enough."
As they all stand for the big battle at the end of the story, Ronin seeing Mae dead and not rising immediately like previous times she has died reawakens his leviathan fully. We have a killer of a cliffhanger with not knowing the fates of the pirate monarchs nor all of our found family, Ronin and Mae are separated, and the battle seems to have just begun.
I loved the deepening of the relationships that Mae has with the crew and Ronin's mates, with them calling out Ronin for mistreating her. I also loved seeing Mae and Ronin come back to each other in a more healthy way compared to right after their escape. Ronin acknowledging his faults with Mae explaining what she needs was beautiful. I also loved that while Mae could see Ronin was hurting, she also realized that she deserved better than being a doormat and only serving as his coping mechanism. The further exploration of this world was amazing, with Mae rediscovering more parts of herself with each new location, until the final reveal as to who she is and why she has this mysterious power to come back from the dead. I cannot wait to see what happens in book 3!
Definitely check this book out if you love a pirate romantasy, action and adventure, mythical creatures, break her heart to save her, older man/younger woman, on the rocks, politics, passionate lovers, protector, tortured hero, and characters with a tragic past.
I received an advanced review copy for free. This review contains my honest opinion and is being left voluntarily.

The Monarchs picks up right where the Last Leviathan leaves off. Maeve and Ronin have to prepare for war. In hopes to stop Cross and Pike they aim to unit all the Monarchs in alliance.
This book absolutely starts where book 1 ends. There was a bit more world building in this as you see more when meeting the monarchs. I was impressed with how smoothly this was done within the story. This story however moved a little slower for me than book one, there was action but not like I was expecting. Not in a bad way but I was expecting complete pirate chaos. I did enjoy the balance and breather it felt like the characters needed, to recoup.
I enjoyed the character development with Maeve and the crew because I adore found family. But I absolutely did not enjoy Ronin with his miscommunication trope happening in this one. I understand he’s healing and it’s a process but the man got on my nerves. Of course I still love him and love them together, as well as the entire crew. I loved seeing how the crew treats Maeve, and she truly solidifies herself as one of them. The communication issues trope just isn’t my favorite.
That being said the spice was spicing 4.5/5 🌶️. It never disappoints, like ever… I see you headboards. If you know you know if you don’t read on! The heat and passion, no need for a heater the spice will warm you right up.
I enjoyed the new characters and what they bring to the story. Of course, I was waiting for the big dramatic ending and oh boy did it deliver- warning if you don’t love cliffhangers too bad, this one will leave you begging for book 3. Yes, Maeve, you are the drama! I am here for all of it.
I personally can’t wait for the next book because I’m so stuck on these characters.
Just because of the trope that will not be named (see 👆🏼) and the pacing. I’ll give it a solid 3.75/5⭐️if I only get solid stars 4/5. It was a great sequel to the Last Leviathan.
Thank you Anacostia Miller, Hot Tree Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book
I was given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the second installment of this series! Maeve is so strong-willed and spirited and I loved getting to know more of the characters' backstories like Wraith, Andra, and Conway. I do wish there were more action scenes and we had been able to explore more of the world and the creatures within. When they found the merrow, I was really hoping for a cool underwater scene, but I enjoyed the challenge the ghost presented at Lucky's.
I do think the beginning was a bit slow but I appreciated how Miller didn't shy away from the rawness and fears that plagued Ronin after book 1. It was a refreshing glimpse into the male psyche that is often left out in fiction.
I can't believe I'm writing this but I think the story could have done with just a little less of the intimate scenes. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for Ronin's naughty mouth and Miller does an exceptional job writing these scenes. For me personally, I would have liked to have seen more description of the incredible fantasy world Miller created rather than the relationship between the two main characters.
Overall, a fun and thrilling read! I can't wait for book 3!
It was great being back with The Guardians of Farlight Isles. The Monarchs is the recently released second book of the series and Miller delivered a gripping epilogue that had me invested right from the start.
Following the events of The Last Leviathan, Maeve and Ronin are hoping to unite the pirate monarchs across Farlight Isles before Varric brings the war to them.
After barely escaping Farlight Prison, Ronin battles both physical ailments and the trauma of being tortured and tormented by Nathaniel Pike and his men. We got a lot more of Ronin’s perspective in this one and I really enjoyed his character growth as a result.
Maeve, on the other hand, hunts for the truth after learning that everything Varric told her was a lie. Each new destination unlocks more of her memories but she feels she may never get the answers she seeks.
Merrows, salties, and cutthroat pirates greet them at every turn on the journey testing not only just Mae and Ronin but the small crew of close friends accompanying them. And let me say this small group is fab. There was banter, angst, heartbreak and lots of spice!
I was expecting a little more action after the ending of book one, but I can tell by the last couple of chapters it’s coming in book three and it’s going to be good!
Thank you to Hot Tree Publishing for a gifted copy to read.
Anacostia Miller has done it again!!! I think people could hear me screaming from the other side of Australia at the absolutely tortuous ending of this book 😭
I absolutely loved how this book allowed Maeve and Ronin to experience their feelings in a safe space. It throughly explored their mental states and encapsulated some of the toxicity that comes with trying to understand and deal with those issues whilst loving people and wanting to protect them.
The plot was plotting! The spice has jumped up a notch! This is almost equal parts plot and spice. I feel like this has more world building and character development and the next book is going to be ACTION.
I freaking love the found family in these books. In fact I think these characters and their connection are quickly becoming some of my favourites.
I NEED CHARACTER ART OF LUELLA AND RONINS SPARRING IMMEDIATELY! I laughed out loud at the mental image of this and I would love to have it immortalised in my collection thank you very much.
Thank you to Hot Tree publishing for gifting me and ARC of this book. I am absolutely down for the ride and need book 3 yesterday. This review is my honest opinion.
The Monarchs expands the world of the Farlight Isles in breath-taking ways, combining high-stakes adventure with a poignant exploration of trauma and healing. Maeve’s emotional journey was captivating, but it was Ronin’s outstanding character growth that truly stood out. Watching him confront his past and embrace his potential was a joy to read.
The introduction of the other monarchs and their unique isles added rich layers to the story. Each new setting felt alive, with vivid descriptions and fascinating cultural details that made the world feel even more immersive. The bonds formed with the other monarchs brought depth to the themes of unity and resilience.
While the pacing dipped slightly in parts, the exploration of healing, trust, and growth more than made up for it. The Monarchs is a powerful sequel that blends action, heart, and wonder. I can’t wait to see where the journey takes us next!
This review took me a while to gather together because I had taken me so long to read the first 40% of this books.
There is a LOT more emotional turmoil being discussed in this book. Which I loved getting insight into how the characters were processing the last book but for me it made the beginning of the story hard to read. Only because the focus was soooo heavy on just their emotions. There wasn’t much else that happened until the after that part had been settled.
After that though the story went hard and heavy on action/adventure. All the aspects I had loved about the first book shined and connected well with the second half of the story.
We get a lot more spice in this book and if that was an issue for you in the first book you may want to take that into consideration going into this one! Me? I loved it.
Thank you for the ARC of this book and I’m excited to see where the story goes next!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY 🎉 and a big thank you to Anacostia Miller and Hot Tree Publishing for the early review copy of The Monarchs! I absolutely adored book one and couldn't wait to continue the series.
MY THOUGHTS 💭 ✨ I absolutely loved book 1 and this was a fantastic continuation of the series ✨ I loved the continued world building and learning more about the other groups in this series ✨ I still loved the close quarters of the ship setting and all the pirate vibes ✨ Our MMC had a lot to deal with personally after the trauma he faced in the first book ✨ Mae is so strong and it was interesting to slowly learn more about her and her past ✨ There are a lot of characters and so many of them have two names so it was a little difficult at the start to remember who everyone was but I got there eventually. I probably should have done a reread!
The Monarchs is a lovely sequel following on from The Last Leviathan. Now that we know the characters well, and the trauma they went through at the ending of the first (no spoilers!), this novel is a lot more emotional, with focus on the character's social development.
The plot was slower than the first, as it was less focussed on physical action, and more on character development. But it was enjoyable to read about characters that dealt with ramifications of what they had been through, and how it affected their relationships with one another.
There was still plently of spice and it was beautiful to see how the characters’ relationships kept reaching new strengths despite the struggles they (particularly Ronan) were going through. Depression and PTSD are difficult subjects to write about but I think the author did it beautifully and portrayed it well.
Once more, we were left with a cliffhanger and a dramatic ending, building the excitement for the final book! If you like the found family trope in particular , this series will really tug at your heartstrings
“Who am I? Or, I suppose, more importantly, what am I?”
I loved this story. It’s not an easy or light read, but I loved it.
From the outset, Ronin isn’t dealing with his recovery from his incapacitation and capture. He is closed off from those around him, especially his loved ones. He believes that everyone would be better off without him there and pushes everyone away so he doesn’t hurt them. He is a horrible person to Maeve throughout a lot of the story. He’s manipulative and uses her as an outlet, causing rifts between him and his crew.
Maeve struggles to come to grips with her own new status and who or what she is. Throughout the story, she finds out more information, leading to a sense of self. She also struggles with her relationship with Ronin, how he makes her feel and how much he hurts her. While they begin to work out what is going on, it’s a long hard slog.
I loved the adventure throughout the story, the introductions of the Monarchs and their role in everything. The ending though… that cliffhanger! Way to end just before the rollercoaster really goes into the dip!
Thank you Anacostia and Hot Tree Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review the second instalment in this awesome series. I can’t wait for more!
So many times, the sequel doesn't do the first book any justice, but I loved this story even more! Ronin and Maeve have some great moments, and their relationship growth is written beautifully.
"Sometimes it seemed as if he didn’t believe I survived and was nursing the pieces of his heart while suffering through every day of his recovery. Meanwhile, I starved, aching for him. For reassurance.
I wanted to feel alive, while Ronin treated me like I died back in Farlight Prison."
Anacostia miller has done it again!! I absolutely loved the first book and was hooked, this book was no different, I was hooked from the first page!! The adventure, spice, romance was all chefs kiss. The storyline was written beautifully and had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the start!! I can’t wait for book 3!
At first, I was really annoyed with how Ronin was treating Maeve, but it was a very realistic way of how a traumatized person would treat those around them who care enough to stick around afterwards. We finally get answers about who Maeve really is and it's not giving me a happy feeling about book 3...
What a great sequel! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The spice is spicing and the plot thickens! I loved the mental health struggles Ronin went through and the progress he made in overcoming them. And that ending has me so excited to read book 3!
New favorite book!!!!!!!! This was absolutely spine tingling perfection!!!! It has everything you want world building, found family, breaking mental health stigmas, SPICE, SPICE, and more SPICE!!!!! This series is now one of my favorites and I can’t wait for the third!!!!!!
Anacostia came for her readers in this one! So raw and filled with emotion as her characters wore their hearts on their sleeves and bared it all for the sake of family in this book. And I absolutely love it when the plot is just as good as the spice 🤌🏽 Looking forward to the rest of this book series!
This one was slower for me than the 1st book. I loved the slow burn and taunting in the first novel and that was mostly absent in this book. However, it makes sense with the storyline.
We are in the depths of Ronin's trauma post Nathanial Pike/Varric Cross and watching Mae die by their hands. He can’t summon his leviathan, he broke Mae and is pushing everyone away from him. Ronin had to go through his trauma and seek forgiveness. He also had to secure an army in the process to go up against Varric. He had to learn humility and that he is more than his leviathan. We also go deeper into Enya’s story and how she raised her children.
This was just as amazing as the first book! So much adventure and revelations are found.
Maeve and Levi go through some really tough times and I love how there love story is not easy. It’s filled with betrayal heart ache and mistakes. But they work in it and through it. They learn to trust and develop deeper connections.
I love how strong and fierce Maeve is and how loyal she becomes to the family that have taken her in.
Levi really develops as a character as goes through some really hard times and mental trauma.
This was an amazing series and I loved every minute of reading it!
Doing reviews weeks later based on what I remember and the VIBES: Pirates (but they're absolutely the good guys) Spicey spice Legit mental health representation and trauma recovery (LOVE THIS) SO MUCH ANGST (LOVE IT) More twists and turns but still staying on course Sorta wished I had waited to read this when the next book was out cuz I wanted to immediately binge read the next one More worldbuilding and less time spent on a ship Great side characters given page time that makes the story even better Diverse rep!
Book 1 built up the story so Book 2 could keep me up until 4am. Solid series that I plan on buying hardcopies of when I am able. I regret keeping this series on my TBR for so long.
Thank you so much Hot Tree Publishing for sending me this ARC!
Monarchs is the second book in a Fantasy Romance series full of pirates, sea creatures, adventures and romance. After loving the first book I had very high expectations for this sequel and OMG it was incredible, I think I loved it even more than the Last Leviathan and I can’t wait for book 3!
Monarchs begins shortly after the first book ended and I loved seeing all the characters again. There was a lot of action, revelations, plot twists but also sweet moments between my favorite characters, healing from trauma and cute and funny moments with the amazing found family. I also loved how we got to see so many new places, the author created a truly fascinating and unique world and I can’t wait to explore even more of it.
My heart was breaking so many times for Rorin, he went through so much and it was hard to see him breaking, but I loved how Mae and his family helped him heal, he is such a strong character. Mae grew so much from who she was at the beginning of book 1 and it was amazing to see her here, she was trying to find who and what she was and I must admit I was shocked at that twist but at the same time it made perfect sense. Mae and Rorin had a truly beautiful relationship but after what they went through they had to put in the work to find their way back to each other and I was rooting for them to do so. They truly loved each other and I loved their banter, their conversations, sweet scenes and of course the spicy ones, they were truly perfect together and I can’t wait to see them in book 3.
Monarchs is the perfect sequel in this amazing fantasy romance series, I absolutely love Mae and Rorin’s story and definitely recommend it to everyone. And after that cliffhanger the third book can’t come soon enough!
