This is worth reading for the art, which is absolutely sumptuous. The way it especially depicts action is remarkably, uh, fluid (well, it is!) and the rest of it looks gorgeous as well, although some of the merfolk faces are weird.

I also loved what I suspect is an homage to the original Little Mermaid (the one with no singing crabs) when Jo takes human form and things get incredibly foamy. It’s a nice little touch.

The story focuses on Jo and Yuki’s attempts to get Ryuu out of prison, which leads to Jo and Yuki spending a lot of time together. Ahem hem. As predicted, there is a love triangle forming and I don’t hate it, since Ryuu’s true colours show up at the end (not quite how I’m making that sound, either).

It all moves a little too fast, really, introducing a truly punchable antagonist who makes for a decent villain and his big plan amidst everything else. I wish it had more room to breathe because I like it so much, but this might well be the rare three volume series that actually gets it right.

There’s action, romance, wonderful art, fanservice, and it makes for an incredibly brisk read that glorifies the ocean in a way that is almost impossible not to get swept up in. Great little read.

This volume introduces an antagonist Maya, who is a next-level creep. But it also quickly pairs Jo and Yuki together (platonically); the pacing is fast and abrupt, but I like these two together. The ending of this volume opens up room for fun tension. no-nonsense Jo is falling for Yuki

Alternatywny tytuł - Jak narobić sobie problemów po nic wersja syrenkowa. Jo po bezowocnych namowach przyjaciółki, aby ta wkońcu dała sobie spokój z człowiekiem, przeprosiła i wróciła do społeczności, zaczyna rozumieć, że Ryu jest beznadziejnie zakochana i nie da sobie przemówić do rozsądku. Syrenka nie ma wyboru musi odbić przyjaciółkę z więzienia, a najpierw znałeść kapsułkę rzekomo mającą zmienić syrenę w człowieka. W tym momencie witamy się z 2 tomem grzeszników lazurowej otchłani! Czerwonowłosa syrena już niebawem wyniku niezbyt przemyślanych działań trafi na ląd szukając miłości Ryu Yukiego w celu no właśnie jakim? Przypadkiem zmieniając się w człowieka Jo, przebijać przez straż terytorialną, rozmawiając z człowiekiem i odchodząc z nim, złamała tyle praw podmorskiego świata, że zyskała nowy achievement, obecnie nie jest już poszukiwana w celu uwięzienia, lecz zabicia na szczęście są jeszcze eee ,,mili koledzy", a właściwie jeden, który w ramach układu pełnego niejasności wyciągnie ją z tej sytuacji. No kto by nie skorzystał? Napewno Jo! Syrena nie ufa Mayi i ma ku temu wiele powodów, bardzo dobrych powodów. A kim on jest? Kapitan Maya nowy bohater, którego od pierwszego pojawienia można śmiało znienawidzić, śmieć nie reprezentujący sobą absolutnie nic dobrego, z ego wielkości cytadeli i mocnym prawym sierpowym. Skoro o nowych osobach mowa mamy jeszcze tajemniczego lorda zwanego Harujion należy do grona rządzącego państwem syren ma wielkie marzenie, które pragnie spełnić posługując się silnymi syrenami w tym celu pragnie zwerbować Jo. Cóż takiego planuje? Odebrać kilka wysp ludziom, aby syreny mogły żyć znowu w ciepłych wodach, pełnych słońca, nie obawiając się ludzi. Wszystko pięknie ładnie brzmi w teorii gdybym nie postawa i alarmy ostrzegawcze w postaci: ,,CZARNY CHARAKTER UCIEKAC!" Można było by się nabrać na dobre zamiary lorda. No cóż nie muszę dodawać, że pewna syrenka o gołębim sercu, zakochana po uszy przystała na wszystko pod warunkiem, że Yuki będzie mógł w tym uczestniczyć i nie zrobią mu krzywdy. A wyprawa Jo i łamanie prawa przez nią pójdzie na w całości na marne. Tak przyjaciele to prawdziwy skarb ... Jo wyszła wręcz cudownie na tej znajomości, a gdyby nie stanowcza postawa Akili oraz prawo skończyła by na łasce Mayi.

Cóż emocji napewno nie brakuje w tym tomie, kreska jest miła dla oka, bohaterowie eee są napewno ciekawi, można by rzec nietuzinkowi, a sama manga nabiera zarysu walki ze znacznie większym problemem. Trzeci i ostatni zarazem tom zapowiada jeszcze większą dawkę wymienionych atrakcji (oraz mam nadzieję rozwiązanie kwestii nowego palącego problemu) mogę więc powiedzieć tylko jedno słowo na koniec: Polecam!

In Summary
There is excitement and intrigue aplenty as Jo first winds up a mermaid out of water, then encounters the worst sort of mermen walking on land. In trying to save Ryuu, Jo’s stumbled into all sorts of merfolk classified secrets. It’s one hard-hitting surprise after another in Volume 2 of A Sinner of the Deep Sea.

The Review
Whereas Volume 1 took a leisurely pace, a ton happens in Volume 2 and quickly. Just as in the original Little Mermaid story, there is a way for merfolk to become human. Only it’s not the lovestruck Ryuu who gets legs. Rather, Jo unwittingly triggers the transformation on herself, leading to a nail-biting race to get to the surface.

Conveniently enough, Ryuu’s love interest Yuki happens to be where Jo makes landfall. Thus her adventures on land begin. The human world is represented by modern-day Japan, and Jo’s struggle to get used to legs and human technology is engaging as well as her interactions with Yuki. However, she has no interest in staying on land – her goal is to reunite Ryuu with Yuki. But even though Jo and Yuki are intent on rescuing Ryuu, hints of attraction quickly pop up between the two, which points to a possible love triangle.

I expected Jo’s sojourn on land to last a while, but she’s back in the water within two days, thanks to an unexpected run-in with someone from her past. Maya’s a merfolk security agent. He’s also violent and a sexual predator, who has no qualms about groping a 13-year-old girl. Unlike the straight-laced Captain Akira, he sees his authority as a means of getting what he wants, and he’s got his sights on making Jo his.

In addition to giving readers a character to despise, Maya also reveals that merfolk agents have been sneaking ashore in human guise for some time. Moreover, a top merfolk official is aiming to do more than move secretly among humans. Thus, by the end of Volume 2, the plot swiftly expands beyond a romance between a lovesick mermaid and a human to a scheme that could change the world of merfolk as they know it.

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Choć manga przyciąga wzrok i buduje interesujące tło, niestety nie zawsze radzi sobie z tempem narracji. Pierwszy tom poświęca na przykład zbyt dużo miejsca na ekspozycję i kreację świata. Samo w sobie nie jest wadą, jednak niektórym czytelnikom może brakować silniejszych akcentów fabularnych. Przez długi czas historia opiera się bardziej na nastroju i atmosferze niż konkretnej akcji, co może być zaletą dla cierpliwego odbiorcy, ale mniej angażujące dla osób oczekujących dramatyzmu już od pierwszych stron.

Akcja zaczyna się na dobre dopiero w późniejszych fragmentach, a wątki polityczne i społeczne – choć ciekawe – są potraktowane zbyt powierzchownie. Manga porusza ważne tematy, takie jak opresyjność władzy, uprzedzenia wobec „innych” i toksyczność społeczeństwa zamkniętego w sobie, ale nie rozwija ich w pełni i traktuje te wątki zbyt infantylnie. Autor zdaje się celowo unikać zbyt głębokiej analizy, upraszczając przekaz i sprowadzając wiele kwestii do dość naiwnych dychotomii dobra i zła...

The story took some weird turn... I don't think I will continue reading it. This pdf character is lame and annoying... I guess he was supposed to be like this. But from my point of view, he is not a believable antagonist. It's more like someone who was packed into the manga to add more drama to the story. Also, I'm pretty sure I can predict how this story end. So it is a no from me.

Η εικονογράφηση από μόνη της είναι αρκετή για να με κάνει να θέλω να διαβάσω τη σειρά, αλλά η πλοκή πήρε τα ηνία και δεν τα αφήνει. Τρομερό character development και τώρα έχουμε και ανταγωνιστές. Ο Harujion μπορεί να θέλει το καλό του λαού του, αλλά δεν νομίζω να το κάνει με σωστό τρόπο. Όσο για τον Maya, ρίξτε τον στη φυλακή και πετάξτε το κλειδί.

Cannot wait for the next volume, although it sounds like it’s going to be the last? Idk whether to be sad it’s so short or thankful I’m at least getting a completed story. I could read 100 more volumes of this.

Shit, I'm so deeply invested in this story now, and the next volume doesn't come out till March! 😭 I can't wait to see what happens with Jo, Yuki, and Ryuu because this whole storyline is a lot more invested than I initially thought it would be.
