What a final volume!

Holy cow, I didn't realize this was the last one when I started reading it. It became apparent as so many of the loose ends started coming together and I began to realize this was it. I should have guessed considering the cover art but I didn't feel like that was more than a tease. This whole time I had been rooting for her other suitors. When Alendis fell through and broke my heart I was thoroughly convinced the perfect match was going to be Carsein. Despite it all, I kept thinking that the prince was the worst possible person for her to pair up with.

As I went deeper and deeper into the story told here, I realized that so much had been about healing and untwisting the terrible darkness that the original timeline had created. With everything coming to a head in this volume and the final missing pieces of the hidden plot revealed I found myself overwhelmed with a multitude of conflicting feelings. I tried explaining them to my husband and couldn't.

Find myself left satisfied with the overall story and yet wanting for more. I want to see my faves find their alternate happiness. I want Jiun to see a better future as well. I think the setting is quite charming and the side characters well worth their own story. I would be thrilled to see a cameo of our winning couple as an incidental background update, but I feel like their story has definitely reached a satisfying conclusion.

Oh Alendis, why did you have to disappear? I know you're suffering was intense but I still wanted to see you find your happy ending! Now all I do think about is your eternal suffering of bittersweetness. And poor Carsien, he never even got to say his feelings out loud. The flame snuffed out before it even got to glow. Why can't I see your happy ending?

If the author of ever reads these reviews, please consider a bonus volume or spin-off series for us who loved those who are left behind.

So the series is over and ultimately, I'm disappointed with how it ended. I knew that Arista and Ruve would end up together but the way it happened felt rushed and incomplete. I won't lie, I was rooting for Carsein to sweep Tia off her feet but that obviously didn't happen.

I know this is a different timeline, and that Ruve and Tia are essentially different people but after everything that Tia has done to avoid being with Ruve, I can't believe she folded like that, especially with how sudden her love was. I wanted Tia to stand on her own and succeed her father as a knight but we didn't even really get that. Once again a woman gave up her dream over a man, quitting what she wanted to do before she even really got very far.

There were a few unresolved things, especially concerning Tia's father and overall the last volume felt a little choppy, had larger time skips, and felt rushed.

The art is great and the covers are beautiful but this series will not be a keeper. Overall the story was fantastic, and I enjoyed it as a whole but the ending left me disappointed.

Ending feels really rushed

I’m disappointed in the ending. It’s like they ran out of money and crammed a bunch of stuff together at the end that’s like a 180 turn from the preceding 8 novels. I’m really not happy with how things turned out.

I liked it but so wish there had been more to the ending. I agree with several others….felt rushed. Still an enjoyable series.

While reading this final volume of The Abandoned Empress, I felt much like I did while reading Fortress of Eagles (review): who are all these nobles, and why should I care about their conflicts with each other? I confess that I ended up skimming some parts once I got to the trial about the poisoning plot. That isn't ideal when you're heading toward what's supposed to be a big emotional ending.

What I would have liked to see:

- More screen time and characterization for Jieun, and more interactions between her and Aristia that would perhaps show a growing, reluctant understanding between them. My impression was that they'd both been traumatized by their time loops (and/or their being isekai-ed, in Jieun's case). I liked how Jieun's hair turned white at the end, showing that she'd given up her god-given powers to save Aristia. I felt more sympathy for the rival who slunk off to an unknown fate than the one who ends up with the hot prince!

- More about Allendis. He got shuffled offstage a couple volumes ago, and we see next to nothing about him after that.

- Some kind of romance for Carsein. He's a good guy, and deserves a nice girl.

- More insight into Ruveliss' point of view. We got a little of that in the last volume or two, but it would have been better if the reader got more about his feelings and how he'd changed between the two time loops.

- Less of the factional disputes. I didn't enjoy laundry lists of names in history, and appreciate that kind of thing even less in fiction. None of it ended up being relevant to Aristia's story, or at least not in a way that I halfway related to or could be bothered to keep track of.

After a really striking first couple of volumes with a vibrant underlying current of psychological horror, this one rolled downhill as the hundreds of pages went by, and ended up just kind of sitting idly at the bottom of the hill with a predictable, and not very convincing HEA (of course Aristia ended not being barren. Why'd we even go there in the first place?). Too many characters, not enough characterization, nowhere near enough shoujo subjectivity. In general, the arcs I was most interested in were underdeveloped and didn't have the emotional or narrative impact that I was hoping for.

The art was really nice, especially Aristia's flowing hair. :) Though as mentioned in my other reviews for this series, it relied overmuch on copy-and-pasted assets in the backgrounds and on the outfits.

Not a keeper, ultimately. Lots of potential that either went unrealized, or that was realized in ways that didn't do much for me. The Webtoons-type things I've tried so far have been disappointing, but I'll keep trying.

This may be the best part of the story so far with so many revelations and things coming together. Also glad to see this is not the last of the series so hopefully we will get to see at least some of the story progressing past these new vows and truths. It very well could have ended at this point, though it would be nice to see some happiness after all of this chaos. If it wasn't enough that Tia constantly seems to be a target, it seems Ruve is as well. Even Jieun turns out to not be entirely what was expected as we learn more about what happened to her before coming back in time, though it's doubtful she ever would have really believed Tia's claims that their paths have changed had she not been with Carsien when Tia was attacked. The only one we don't really seem to know about at this point is Allen, though he's rumored to have at least visited his family home a few times now, so he's still alive.

Ok. There isn't so much to say about this one, besides, it's an ending...I guess. The plot is rushed and confusing. Things that would have gotten 20 pages of explanation previously get three panels here. Tia seems almost cruel occasionally. And if you aren't into the prince just know that Allen and Carsein get almost no play time here. The resolution with Jieun happens with almost no explanation. It's all just so disappointing after 8 quality volumes previously. The art is still beautiful and that is the only real redeeming quality of the piece.

I'd love to read the alternate endings and Jieun's backstory that are teased in the back of this volume. I couldn't tell if the author was forced to bring the book to a conclusion faster than intended when I read those comments. Anyway, you might like this volume, you might not. I found it rushed and unsatisfying.

I really loved this series. I sat down and read it in a couple of hours. While I enjoyed the ending I felt that the story was very chopped up and strung together. There were a lot instances that I wasn't sure how the story was jumping around. It kind of felt like maybe the writer was not completely ready to end the series here but I'm not sure. I still enjoyed the main elements and the ending and I'm actually pretty sad that this is the last one. Although I would still recommend this series as a whole.

I feel like I’m being generous with four stars, but at the end of the day, even though I was generally okay with its ending, the promise of this series was ultimately disappointing. There was so much potential, but it felt at times that the author couldn’t decide on how they wanted the story to go, so this last volume was overfilled with plot and minimized storylines. The artwork, however, stayed stunning.

That being said, I can’t believe this was originally published in full color in a weekly format. No wonder!

Here it is the final volume, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series. The story has been compelling, and the art is really good.
There have been moments, especially in this final volume where the flow from chapter to chapter felt rushed, that it would have been better for another chapter between the two, but that's just a small thing.
Overall a good read and a series I can see myself re-reading in the future.

1/25 Wasn't my favorite second chance fantasy series. Things got way too convoluted over too vast a time span and it became difficult to remember who was who and what exactly was going on. She also resisted her feelings past the point of comfort and I got disgusted - I was questioning if I wanted to continue the series until near the end I realized it was the last volume and was seriously relieved. Wish we'd had more closure with green hair, but ah well.

I really enjoyed this series. Yes, she took a little too long to trust the prince, and I wish that we had more substance and insight on her rival. Some parts of the plot were also glossed over a little fast, but all-in-all it had lost of intrigue and romance! I really loved the art as well (and I do love when color is added)

Very cute! I wish some of the plots were more fleshed out..and we saw Allen a bit more and his role with helping Tia. But I am okay with the character growth the main protags had. Very solid series imo.

What an amazing wrap up to a fantastic story. The art was a stunning and gorgeous as ever and I'm so sad there isn't more story to read. Though this was wrapped up beautifully, I still WANT more.

Crying in the cub over here because this is the finale.I really loved this series I believe that the storyline, the art style and the fact that it was an isekai was what captured me from the beginning. I loved seeing tias journeys over seeing her character development throughout.

I have so many unanswered questions and things that need closure. I started this series fully team Allendis and when that went down the toilet like a horse turd I jumped on the Carsein train.

ONLY FOR THEM TO GET LITERALLY NO CLOSURE. You cannot tell me the ending that Carsein and Aristia got was “closure” cuz it wasn’t. It made me feel delulu as fuck to the point where I was like, “did Carsein even love her in the first place?? He definitely did right?? Right?!”

But I’m thinking he had to have loved her since almost everyone who has read this series thinks they should’ve ended up together, and while I’ve forgiven Ruve for his misdoings, I still don’t support this couple.

Tia and Ruve were so…rushed. Like their ending felt like 100 mph on cruise control and I was doing 1 mph on my tricycle. I had no idea how we even got to them married because it felt so rushed.

The ending as a whole felt rushed, ESPECIALLY with Jieun’s story and Carsein. Like there are still so many unanswered questions with them, I really feel like the author just ran out of time and had to cut a bunch of stuff. We could’ve easily had at least one more volume to tie up Carsein and Jieun’s loose ends.

Allendis is also a loose end in my mind but I’m more willing to forgive that one because he was showing yandere symptoms and we as readers had to shut that down asap.

I’m not 100% disappointed in this ending, mostly because I saw it coming, but I don’t think it was necessarily a satisfying conclusion to an otherwise fantastic series. I truly think all the characters, especially Aristia, were well thought out and complete characters. Aristia was a cunning but kind protagonist that I enjoyed following. She was kind but also mildly selfish and conniving when she wanted to be and I like that in female characters. That’s also the reason I like Penelope from “Villains are Destined to Die”.

Idk how to end this but it was worth the read and I’ll happily reread this series again.

Read more graphic novel reviews at The Graphic Library.

According to online discourse, the author and the adapter rushed the ending of the story given the backlash from fans, which led to unevenness of this volume. For eight volumes, this series has been calculated and steady, but this volume was a sprint to the finish and left a lot of things unsettled. It's truly a shame because we were robbed of the intended conclusion. What we got instead was some convenient answers and attempts at tidying up loose ends while leaving many characters out in the cold. Some of the illustrations are still beautiful and the coloring is still very pretty, but the volume suffered overall and there aren't as many gorgeous scenes or thoughtful details compared to the rest of the series. I still adore the series overall despite the ending being a bit of a low note.
