Jack Reed spells trouble. But has trouble met its match?
The business world trembles at the mere mention of Jack Reed, but Becca Stevens has no such fear. Her pleas for him to end his hostile takeover of Lassiter Media should be laughable. Yet there's such sincerity in her eyes, such a light his own life seriously lacks. Becca wants to show him just what his ruthless quest is costing others. And he goes along with her plan, seeing it as the perfect opportunity to woo her into his bed. But is he walking right into her trap—one that neither of them will want to escape?
Robyn received a book from her big sister and immediately fell in love with Cinderella. Sprinklings of magic, deepest wishes come true - she was hooked! Picture books with glass slippers later gave way to romance novels. When she was older, she wanted to write one.
However, in junior high, Robyn hit a stumbling block - a disheartening grade of one out of ten for a book review. Confused and hurt, she asked her hundred-and-thirty-year-old English teacher why the low mark? The wizened schoolmarm sniffed, "You obviously had a senior do it for you." Thankfully Robyn's business teacher was a honey.
Following a fifteen-year career behind the scenes in television, Robyn knew the time was right to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Late in 2004, she received a phone call from a London editor. She'd submitted a manuscript to the Sweet line, which were featuring lighter, sexier stories to be released under the Tango banner. The editor was very interested in her story, but for a brand new line.
Robyn didn't stop smiling for a week, but sometime later learned her revised manuscript hadn't hit the mark. Then she received another call and another request for revisions to a second manuscript! That didn't sell either. On a third manuscript she received a very long, very detail email, asking for, what would turn out to be, a complete rewrite. Having torn out most of her hair, but with 13 contest finals in 2006 (including winning the Golden Pen and Where the Magic Begins), she finished the rewrite then contacted a New York agent. That wonderful agent took her on, and Robyn sold in a matter of weeks, first to Silhouette Desire, then Modern Heat (Sexy Sensation/Presents) with a two book deal! She is currently writing manuscript number fourteen.
Robyn lives with her own modern-day hero on Australia's Sunshine Coast with their three little princesses, as well as two poodles and a cat called Tinkie. She has majors in English literature and psychology, and loves new shoes, worn jeans, visits to the theatre and lunches at picturesque Moffat Beach with her writer friends.
Fantastic book, filled with all types of emotion. In previous books of the series, JD Lassiter's death and the terms of his will have split the family apart. Taking advantage of the turmoil, Jack is helping Angie Lassiter attempt a hostile takeover of the family company. He is known for acquiring companies and then tearing them apart for maximum profit. Becca has seen the effects this takeover bid is having on the Lassiter's charity foundation and is determined to do something about it.
Becca is one determined and stubborn woman. From everything she has learned about Jack she believes him to be evil personified. It's obvious to her that he cares absolutely nothing about the harm that his actions cause to others. So she confronts him and challenges him to spend a week with her and let her try to convince him to give up his plans. Her idea is to show him another side of life, one where people need the kind of help her charity provides.
Jack is known for being cold and ruthless in his business dealings. He learned long ago to bury his emotions when dealing with other people. He has no intention of changing his plans, but he's quite happy to spend time in Becca's company. There is something about her that he just can't stay away from. He knows what she thinks of him and if there are some things she doesn't know about him, that's just the way it has to be. He doesn't expect that being with her makes him start to feel again and that actually begins to affect some of his business dealings.
The chemistry between Jack and Becca is hot. Both are strong minded, stubborn people who don't change their minds easily. Jack admits his attraction to Becca quickly, but she really tries to fight it. She can't understand how she can be attracted to someone whose values appear to be the complete opposite of hers. But as she gets him away from the city and his business dealings, she gets the occasional glimpse of a different Jack, one she finds herself liking. Then the old Jack makes a reappearance and she's left feeling confused and betrayed.
I did get a bit frustrated with Becca at times. She seemed a bit too judgmental of him, almost holding herself up as the perfect example of what a good person is supposed to be like. She did have a good heart, and I enjoyed seeing her show Jack a different view from what he was used to. I loved seeing his reaction to the dog and how it worked its magic on Jack. I found it interesting that Jack did have some good parts that he kept hidden from everyone, even Becca. When everything came to a head at the end, both Becca and Jack had to take hard looks at their own attitudes and expectations before they could have a chance at a life together.
There were some very intriguing twists and turns to the plot of this story. There were some cryptic conversations between Jack and the Lassiter lawyer, and between Jack and Angie that had me very confused about what was going on. There was also a secondary story dealing with another one of Jack's business deals that ended up far different than anything Jack had expected.
SYNOPSIS: Jack Reed the rutheless corporate raider crosses path with peace Corp alumina and Lassiter Foundation director Becca Stevens as he gets in work to acquire is latest target Lassiter Media empire. Becca just wants to show Jack how his quest of ruthlessness will affect the numerous. Becca's pleas for Jack end his hostile takeover is laughable, but he uses it to his advantage to sew how far Becca can go to protect her beliefs in a way to tempt her to come to him. But is he the one trapping or getting trapped by her???
MY REVIEW: I know this is just a romance novel, but the technical jargons used here and everything regarding the business world and takeovers are well explained. I liked the head strong Becca Stevens who can stand even against the devil to prove her beliefs. On the other hand, even though charming the cunning and business minded Jack Reed is very consistent in his effort to take the things he desires. It initially would fill like a regular enemies to lovers love story, but slowly, the story stands out. Groveling man is what I like the most. Which we do get...it's an one time read but quite enjoyable. This was my first time reading a @robyngradyauthor novel.
Intrigue, suspense, the reason for a will and what was given to Angelica. It surely seemed JD loved his daughter and trusted her with his company. Until the will!!!! Angie was devastated and heart broken. Everyone was shocked and could not figure out why. Yet there was a twist. Becca was determined to teach Jack Reed about hurt, struggle and need but did not trust Jack. Becca and Jack also taught each other a few things and found love. Thank goodness Angie saw the light and is a happy daughter again and live of family one out. Now if only Evan and Angie can repair what they once had. It will be an interesting last book in the series.
The Lassiters have not been my favorite dynasty. The will hasn't allowed the family to be shown as a family unit. This book shows Becca Stevens, the director of charities, trying to get Jack Reed to stop helping Angelica to takeover the company. Becca isn't willing to give Jack much of a chance to show that he is not a black heart. Jack can't tell about the promise to JD he has to complete. They don't have many scenes where they are not arguing about something which didn't add much to the sexual tension. Jack completes the promise to JD about Angelica. Becca finally accepts Jack's for his flaws.
was a good story. I didn't like the character of Jack to start with but when I finally found out how he was used I changed my mind about him. Becca's character was strong & pushy but I liked her a lot. This whole series has been good, enjoyed reading them & like the idea of each book being written by a different author. They all have their own way of writing but it seems like it's seamless in the progression of the story.
D3218 Aug14 Dynasties: the Lassiters #5 Becca Stevens and Jack Reed. Becca works with the Lassiter Charitable Foundation fund raising. She fights Jack with actions showing him the people involved and results. Jack, corporate raider, is out to break up Lassiter Media. JD Lassiter's will left the business he had promised his only daughter, Angelica Lassiter, to her fiancé, Evan McCain. Good story with Jack pushing buttons to get his way yet getting pulled into things he didn't want.
"Loads of sexual tension and witty dialogue earn high marks for the latest in the Dynasties: The Lassiters series. Unexpected plot twists and some memorable scenes with a cute pooch bump it up a notch" (RT Book Reviews). 4 1/2 stars TOP PICK!
