Fate plays funny games. It crowned me a princess, then ripped it away overnight. It gave me the determination to restore my family name, despite the hatred of my kind throughout the kingdom. It gave me the courage to walk through the gates of Heir Academy and fight for what’s mine.
But the funny thing about fate is, no matter how much I want to take the reins, it has its own plan for me. This journey has led me through trials and up against enemies I could have never foreseen.
Despite all this lies a glimmer of hope in four men I never saw coming.
Raiden. Kryll. Brody. Cassian.
For better or worse, fate has brought us together and I can no longer fight it.
The hunt for the crown has commenced. And only time will tell what fate has in store for me.
When they invented the term the most perfect fictional man they actually had KRYLL in mind. In fact, the word "perfect" was created specifically to describe him. Argue with the wall!!!!
⤷ “This view leaves me breathless,” I gush, unable to contain the awe it strikes in my bones. “I couldn’t agree more.” Turning to him, my cheeks heat when I realize he’s not basking in our surroundings like I am. No. He’s staring straight at me.
Like I knew I would love him because my weakness is always the quiet, distant, mysterious guy BUT DIDN'T EXPECT TO LOVE HIM THIS MUCH WHAT THE FUCK
Brace yourself because I'm gonna word vomit - I'm gonna use this opportunity to FREAK OUT over our fae princess and her stupid kryptos <3
The way Kryll treats Addi, the way he talks to Addi, the way he handles Addi???? He just knows when to give her space but also acknowledges that he's so far gone when it comes to her, he seems to always know what she needs, and what to say, but he's also a little shy, and maybe a little insecure, and it's just all SO PERFECT?!
I thought I knew why his nickname for Addi is princess, even after he said that "you think I call you princess because of *that*?" I thought I could read between the lines there. BUT OH BOYYYYYYYY I DIDNT REALIZE HE MEANS PRINCESS...........LIKE THAT. MAN I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS FOR HOURSSSSSSSS KRYLL THE MAN THAT YOU ARE
but also BRODY?! the way he shows his love for Addi in this book is SO heartwarming.
gone is the manwhore Brody we know in the beginning of book 1 and we love that for him
also his lil moment of vulnerability there????
⤷“How do I make her love me?”
AND THEN RAIDEN?!?!
I have to mention that I LOVE that these boys show their love for Addi in different ways - not all perfect but at the end of the day all it comes down to is that they love her (THEY'RE STILL IN DENIAL ABOUT IT BUT IM NOT STUPID YALL ARE IN LOVE JUST ADMIT IT)
While Kryll and Brody knows when to give Addi her space to breathe, Raiden just DOES NOT want to be apart from Addi, like EVER. And he ain't shy about letting everyone know that either.
⤷ I’m done wasting time letting her be mad at me. Well, she can stay mad, but I’m done staying away.
Vampire origins are known to be self centered & only care about themselves, so this feeling of protectiveness & longing are new to Raiden. I love the way he slowly learns how to *healthily* love someone. His whole *I know I need to do some groveling and I'm willing to do SO much of it I just need you to tell me how to grovel because I've never done it* thing was SO CUTE MAN 😭😭😭
⤷ “Your friend, she told me I had to give you space, and I did, I fucking did, but here you are, with your damn sass, cold shoulder, and beautiful, beautiful face.”
*and then he storms out bc he angy*
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH PLEASE 😭
And then, and then, when he first finally feels content for the first time in his life after he pretty much shows Addi how much she means to him & how he's hers and she's his ~against the wall~ *if you know what I mean* HAHAHA but the feelings feel foreign to him, man it goes from sexy to wholesome in a blinkkkkk
⤷“What does it mean if I feel weightless? Like, my heart is calm, my soul full, and my entire body is serene?”
It's actually hard choosing which quotes to use and highlight here because THERE ARE SO MANY
AND CASSIAN?!!!!
He's grumpy, hardheaded, which is why he clashes with Addi SO much, they fight all the time because they both have strong personalities, I guess, and it's also just their love language (✿◡‿◡)
DEEEFINITELY their *love language* if you get what I'm putting down lol
I also find it cute how Addi is not afraid to shade Cassian 😭 shows that she's comfortable with him which means A LOT to someone like Addi who's never had anyone to trust before in her life.
⤷It’s almost creepy to see Cassian smile like that; it’s so unnatural it makes me cringe
GIRL 😭😭😭 you don't know it yet but he's your man pls 😭
But one thing that Cassian knows with absolute certainty is that Addi is his woman. And I cannot stress it enough how much he knows this fact 🥹
⤷“I am yours, and you are mine. Now, forever, and always.”
I love how in this book they are all finally acknowledging their feelings; mainly Addi. She's been against feeling anything, especially towards the guys, to almost an annoying degree (I personally find it endearing), and it was actually kind of funny seeing her deal with the fact that she DID care about the guys and she DID care whether they get hurt or not 😭
Addi finally letting her walls down around the guys little by little makes me so giddy and excited for the future 🥹
so I speedrun this series like it was an e-sport and I was the IGL. KC Kean might have just gotten inside my mind and plucked all the things I hoped to happen in book 3 right out of my brain and just...made it happen.
no notes no complaints, are there flaws? yes absolutely but I'm gonna be completely honest with you guys I do not care even a little bit lmaoooooo GIVE ME MORE KRYLL RIGHT NEOW
Even though this book started out sooooooooo slow it definitely picked up at about the 60% mark. I was so close to DNF this book and series. I lost some serious respect for Adrianna in this book. Here was a mature kick ass chick in book 1&2 that regressed to a spoiled 12 year old. She wants to be the ruler of the kingdom and can’t get her shit together. The guys on the other hand made progress by leaps and bounds. Kryll was my absolute favorite in this book! Let’s hope Adrianna makes a comeback and they can all start working as a team. I was hoping by the 3rd book there would be more progress of them as a team, sadly this still hasn’t happened.
I've said it once, I'll say it again; this author and their cliffhangers! I really enjoyed that ending because Addi finally unlocked another level to her bad-assery. I originally had this at 5 stars, but I took away because I was trying to think back on what happened and I don't really remember anything except for Kryll and the ending. So, that lost some of the sparkle for me. I'm kind of feeling this starting to get a little slower... I really hope I'm wrong.
DNF at like half of it There is only so much impulsive fu**ing I can take honestly. You’d think of the third book we’d be a little bit more into the story.
- everyone is sooo immature. Cassian is always broody but it’s not even cute. Dude, TALK. And for someone that has awaited for her moment her whole life, you’d think Adrianna would be a little more mature and calculated. They’re all 20/22 so it’s normal but dammit put a responsible adult it the mix, like a nanny or something.
- you would ALSO think that the relationships were a little bit more developed. It’s so quick yet so slow, she almost slept with everyone but barely speaks to them. It’s not even funny anymore.
- finally, I HATE HATE HATE we the girl comes magically without any type of stimulation. The most unrealistic part in the whole series imo.
I liked the vibe at the beginning but vibes alone don’t build a good story. The first two books should have been only one, and the first half of the third should have been the first two chapters of the second book.
Bit of spoilers after this line
Also I can already tell Kryl is going to be a dragon. And of course he’ll take out the kiss of death
Anyway, I think the serie is a good foot in the door to start romantasy but I’m past that point.
Not rating because it is a DNF @ 36%. BOOOO TOMATO TOMATO TOMATOOOO Really mad about this because I actually enjoyed the first book! I thought the main character was a badass, I thought the world was interesting, but then the second book was kinda meh, and this one just downright sucked. Why is this supposedly badass, take-no-shit woman taking shit from these stupid men??? The body betrayal in this is so crazy. She mixed up the names of two minor characters, which I'm sure most people wouldn't notice, but it INFURIATED me. Then I realized these were published back-to-back which is probably why the writing, characters, and plot immediately fall off after the first one.
Wow this story left you wondering what’s going to happen next. We get two big twists and finally some relationships happen! I hope that book four gives us more of those twists. The only problem I had is that Addi was to indecisive but finally got her head on straight. Such a good book.
Holymotherofgod, i am speechless. I am just picking my jaw up off the floor 😳 that is a drop the friggin mic ending. My actual heart is racing and with questions.
Instantly, you are thrown back into Heir Academy in an explosive way, and the raw, heightened emotion you feel is captured beautifully!!
And I can not get enough!! The epic twists and turns, the unknown and Addi's badassary, will leave you devouring the pages.
SWOON, the guys have fully captured my heart and left me absolutely swooning after them. I love how KC enabled us to connect and understand the guys in more depth and damn... I am all friggin for it. Did I mention the SPICE? Addi is one lucky ladyyy for sure 🥵🥵🥵
I am so friggin excited to see where this goes within the series and can we appreciate how KC leaves the cliffhanger 👀🙈❤️
Honestly, we got a few reveals in this book but nothing really substantial happened. I had higher expectations I guess. I might read the rest when they are out, but I might move on to some better books at this point.
DNF - if you can control water and air, you should be untouchable. You can literally control the water in anyone’s body and stop them in their tracks. Or control the air and suck the breath from their lungs. But this girl seems to forget what she’s capable of. She falls into an icy lake and has to be rescued???? Why couldn’t she simply remove herself from the water then dry herself off? She controls water!!! But no she needs to be rescued and then rest afterwards as if she’s human. Nope. The premise has been set… Stick to it. Either she controls water or she doesn’t.
This was my least fav. I feel like for this being book 3 the plot should be moving a long a bit but it's not. Ole girl and her kryptos (hate that word) are just arguing all the time or getting it on and nothing else is happening which sucks because I really liked the first two books.
Was the author even present during the creation of this book? I mean, come on. This book was a whole lot of nothing. I mean, there was probably lots of sex, but I lost interest so many times during this one that I can’t even remember!
There weren’t many lasting major events with the majority of the action being small, insignificant and leading to nothing further. The majority of the book was spent in their heads with the guys coming to the realization and admitting to themselves how they felt about Addi, each individually and then somewhat as a group and with Addi acting immature and in denial, constantly backtracking on her feelings for the guys, individually.
This books further reiterates what I said in another review about the author just piecing things together because it’s made clear in this one that despite all the training that Addi said she’s had for the last 16 years n preparation for leading the kingdom, she still doesn’t know much about the other origins. You would think her father would teach her as much about wolves as possible, considering he knew the truth, but overall, the ruler should know more details about all the origins in the country they plan to govern. She doesn’t even know the key players of each origin!
Then she was written to saw and do a lot of dumb stuff that really undermines the vision of seeing her as a leader. Speaking of, the way they grown ass men that are her guys cater to their evil ass parents is also undermining to the idea that they came to this academy to be the heir. If they are still doing everything things their parents tell them to and coming when summoned, will they be doing the same thing if they won the throne? It’s really ridiculous. It’s like the author forgot the ages that they are supposed to be and why they are there in the first place. They are acting more like high schoolers playing adults.
Anyway, on to the next one because this one also ends with them all being idiots for Kenner. This man seems to be really smart because he duped King Augustine Reagan and now he’s doing the same to the next generation as well.
See my notes, highlights and commentary on Goodreads. Happy reading!
This was another great installment. The bonds/ romance was still a bit slow with Addi spending most of the book STILL pushing the guys away. But she's finally let them in..... and seemingly walked into a trap if that cliff has anything to say 😭 I'm really hoping the next book isn't them under mind control as it's not a trope I enjoy.....
I’m not sure what the author added to this book but it’s addictive. The relationship growth in this book was great and now I need some epic plot development in book 4.
I kept reading this series because… idk maybe I was just bored. But when she started calling them her “Kryptos” I couldn’t handle how cringey it was anymore.
The world building is minimal at best and downright stupid at worst, half the dialogue is either redundant or superficial, and the plot is… not even there. It’s just SO dumb and I couldn’t look past it anymore.
All I felt for this book was nothing but stress. These people are like horny teenage kids. Addi seems so selfish most of the time that all she thinks about is saving people not because she wants to but its her duty as an heir (given it is but it looks so fake and just for apperances) she doesn’t think about the people she would rope into trouble as well. Likes to act all independent and shit but she just looks like a petulant child to me and you want to entrust the kingdom to that???
Loved the first book, liked the second and almost dnfd this one. At this point, it feels like she is just desperately trying to prolong the story to justify more books. Addi was so amazing in book one, only to be reduced to an absolute stubborn, unreasonable, unintelligent brat. I get being overwhelmed, but every sentence she delivers is just another sass or snark or outright dismissive anger. There is nothing of her leadership qualities left. We get next to nothing on Flora, and when her sister is trying to tell her that she is being a b**ch, she just dismisses her. Also, nothing relevant to the story happens until about 70 percent in. I will finish the series because I still like the story and really loved the first book but please please please let there be more to Addies personality in the next book.
My god. Who were these characters. They went so far into left field I felt like I stumbled into a different book. This one just wasn’t good. Mature characters regressed, specifically the FMC who had hissy fits because “you don’t get to tell me what to do” however “if you don’t do what I say there will be consequences.” Hypocritical much?
There’s no real communication between the characters, just “let’s bang and everything will be fine.” Plus the plot is going in freakin circles and not in a good way. It’s to the point that I really just don’t care about any of it.
Now you may say "Joy you only had 17% of this book and it's the third book in the series. Why not finish it?". Let me tell you why with minor spoilers for book 3 and previous books:
1) I am irritated by how immature the FMCs and MMCs are. I know they are in their early 20s but the premise of this book is that they are in an academy "competing" to be the next ruler of this kingdom so without further world-building that explains they will have older counselors guiding the young ruler, these characters should act with more maturity. Honestly, all the characters are running around like teenagers--lusty and angsty with no ability to communicate their feelings in a healthy way. SO MUCH storming off in anger. The MMCs with the exception of Kryll all have very unhealthy relationships with their parents that they refuse to resolve and the author offers no explanation why they would continue to suffer their parents (no cultural exploration or economic reason why they couldn't just break ties). In fact one of the MMCs (Cassian) was exiled and is no longer part of the pact and yet he keeps answering summonses from his father. Why? All of this leads me to believe if any of them are chosen as the heir they will only be puppets.
2) The "academy" makes no sense. They are going to classes but I read most of the third book and there has been no mention of a single test. Is this a competition? If so, how are they being graded? The classes also don't make any sense. They are taking history classes as if they didn't already attend some sort of primary schooling when they were young? Going to balls? Touring an abandoned castle where the king used to live? How does that train/test you to run a kingdom? Does this author have any idea how a country is run? Shouldn't they be in classes teaching them how to deal with other rulers, negotiate treaties, learn how to pick good counselors? Why do they have battle class? There has been no ongoing war or conflict mentioned. I guess they are learning to fight so they can battle each other? The FMC is throwing on a cloak (a cloak? Why are they wearing cloaks when this is a modern era with cars, cell phones, and The Office and Brooklyn 99?) and heading to class and has never once mentioned a book, studying, or taking notes. She just keeps thinking about paying attention and focusing on what the professor is saying. But nary a note taken. Tf? There is also a "battle class" where they have started having "practice trials" where they compete and yet no results are shared. There are no rankings. In one "trial" all they did was walk out on some ice and look at the territory where mages live? Make it make sense! At three books in there should be enough plot development so that how the characters are going to reach the ultimate goal (being the heir to the kingdom) should be clear. Whether it's that this "academy" prepares the candidates for the trials they will participate in later, the academy's purpose is to cull the candidates who can participate, or their is some sort of committee watching them as they attend the academy and they will decide? I have no idea and and neither do the characters and not a single one of them has asked.
3) There is no plot progression. I mean none. Because how the characters will become the heir hasn't been fleshed out, there is no indication whether timewise or educationally where they are in the process. You don't even know how much time has passed. When they started at the academy or when they should finish the first year. The same thing happens: FMC wakes up, takes a run or shower to get her head on straight and agonize over the men, goes to the dining hall where some interaction happens either with the men or other antagonist, a fight or argument happens, they head to class and along the way the FMC does NOTHING except whine about her plight, agonize over her feelings some more (which are mainly lustful because she rarely has any positive thoughts about the men) and interacts with no one except the four men, two support friends, and the antagonists. You would think she would try to make friends with the people she plans to rule? Nope. Based on the immature characters I have decided none of the main characters should rule. Let Flora or Arlo be the heirs. They are more likeable at this point.
4) What ultimately made me stop reading is that I don't care for the romance. All the author has shown us 80% through the third book is lustful hookups. Not an OUNCE of tenderness has been shown between the love interests and FMC. They refuse to talk about their feelings and when there is a chance that they will, they have sex instead. I am sick of these emotionally constipated characters who are "competing" to run this kingdom. After the FMC hooked up with the last MMC in this book I decided I'd had enough. The MMC was sexually inexperienced. The FMC found out about in previous book and found out that the reason he was a virgin was because he had a hard time controlling his beast. However, because we have POVs for both the FMC and MMCs, the readers know that his beast is one that mates for life and can't have sex with anyone but his mate. So that means sex is significant to the MMC. He (Kryll--what a dumb name) tells her he struggles with his beast when aroused. She never asks any follow up questions. Nor does she check in with him when they are having physical contact. When they do the deed, she treats it like all the interactions she had with the other men, knowing that his situation was different. During the interaction, the MMC has to remind her he's never done this before. We were in her head during this interaction and she had not a single thought about how to make it special for him or worried about his beast. All she did was have lustful thoughts about his body parts. I hated her. I closed up the book, went to bed and when I woke up I decided I don't care about the final 17% of this book or the rest of this series. The FMC is treating the men like objects and I hate it when I read this from male authors and I refuse to read it from a female author.
Omg. I almost forgot: the author is misusing the word whimsical and it was driving me crazy!.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book had me wanting to shake some sense into Adrianna. Yes her life and secrets were exposed but she came off as if she was all alone. She has Cassian, Brody, Kryll and Raiden to help her but she keeps them at arms length.
Her stubbornness causes more trouble to keep coming her way. She’s got to grow a lot if she wants to be the ruler of the kingdom.
We get some answers but this was a slow moving book and I feel there is still so much we need to know. There’s still this rift in the relationships between Adrianna and the guys. Hopefully the next book will bring them together stronger and ready to claim the kingdom.
Why did I continue reading!!! This book could have easily been a couple of chapters in the next book there was such little content that was developmental. The male characters are still garbage, but now the female character is going downhill. And it needs to be said. I am pretty sure the author wrote one sex scene and modified it over and over again. They were easy to skim because they were all the same. And just as a side note. The sex scenes debase any dignity the fmc had. Books like this let young women think that rough abusive sex where they are used as a sexual object then dismissed like garbage is hot, sexy and desirable. Just no.
DNF at almost the half and can’t for the life of me continue reading it.
The series started with some potential and a strong fmc until this book. I can’t take another tantrum from someone who supposedly has been trained her whole life to get her kingdom back but behaves like a little girl whose playtime has been cut short.
Being a bitch and having every interaction resulting in sex without any progress is apparently the only thing she can do. Well done princess! Get some and get some more but ain’t interested in reading it anymore.
MMMM Vampire-Dragon-Wolf-Mage/Enemies to Lovers/Fated Mate/Academy Multi PoV
SYNOPSIS (of 5 Book Series): The story is set in a kingdom where humans and supernaturals coexist. The FC, Addi, is a fae who has spent most of her life in hiding with her father and younger sister since her father, the king, was deposed. Since her father was deposed the Kingdom has been ruled by a Council but a decision has been made that the Kingdom needs a King or Queen again and an Academy has been opened to choose a new heir. The FC has enrolled in the Academy and there she meets the MCs. The story covers how the FC falls for the MCs whilst fighting to be chosen as the heir and defend herself against a corrupt Council that wants to retain its power.
HEAT LEVEL: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/🍆🍆 The heat dials up as the series progresses as does the frequency of scenes. Whilst the hot scenes do not take over the story there are plenty of them and they are ramped up in Books 4 and 5. There is no MM action and mainly FM with some group scenes.
In summary, this could have been a really good series and, whilst well written and edited, it was let down by the lack of depth to the characters and confusion in the story. Whilst the story is not unique had a good structure but was let down by a narrative that flows in fits and starts between action, inaction and large amounts of introspection on the part of the main characters. It would have been a better read if it had been a trilogy or 4 Book series. Each book (aside from Book 5) ends on a cliffhanger which is quickly resolved in the following book. Whilst there is some drama and angst it is limited and quickly resolved with minimal violence. Although there are many positives in the overall story it is overshadowed by the fact that there is little to no depth or background on the main characters just a lot of description and focus on present time events. That would be OK but it means that you are left with characters that are very one dimensional and who are hard to really connect with or buy into. The overall story also makes little sense. The author creates this long story arc with a villainous Council and plenty of machinations but you never actually get told why the Kingdom is how it is or how everything fits together. There are too many open questions which are not answered and information gaps such as how the heir academy came about, why the King was so despised or the fae looked down upon, what actually happened to cause the King to be overthrown or why the FC’s mother abandoned her. It’s very frustrating and, combined with the fact that the author, for some unknown reason, decided to create a brand new villain just for Book 5 made for an extremely unsatisfying ending especially having waded through 5 long Books to get there.
The FC is likeable and strong and the MCs are all nice enough with the usual possessive, alpha tendencies. Unfortunately you get very little understanding as to why they are how they are or what their backgrounds are. I mean, did Brody or Cassian have a mother and if so, what happened to them? There are a couple of side characters which are fun but there’s no background given to them either so again, nothing to get your teeth into. The villains are very one dimensional only popping up to do something evil before disappearing again, it means there is little care about and you get no real feel or understanding of them. I mean, what was Kenner all about and what did he actually do or why? What about Raidon’s father? I still don’t understand what the point of him was or what part he really played in things. As for Clementine? Really? What a complete waste of time and space. Finally, despite all the villains their comeuppance came quickly and with little satisfaction and honestly, aside from Kenner, I didn’t really care as none of them had impacted the story.
Overall I found the series disappointing and frustrating. It could have been so much better.
