Weddings with the Moks #2

Three Reasons to Run

Rate this book
Leo Mok isn’t expecting a runaway bride…

When I arrive late to my cousin’s wedding—thanks to my first speeding ticket—I’m surprised to see his fiancée, Yvonne Siu, fleeing the scene. She’s in distress, having realized that my cousin isn’t good enough for her and she agreed to the wedding mainly to make her family happy. I have to come to her rescue, right?

I’ve always had a thing for Yvonne, and when this beautiful pushover gets angry, it’s irresistible. I move her stuff out of the apartment she shared with her ex, and I help her discover who she really is.

And when she reveals that she’s never particularly enjoyed herself in bed…well, I know it’s a terrible idea to assist with that problem, but I can’t hold back forever.

Our lives are getting more entangled, especially since she’s temporarily moved in with my parents, and I’m not sure how I’ll ever walk away from her.

But Yvonne doesn’t seem interested in another relationship, and then there’s the fact that she nearly married my cousin…

Thoroughly engaging romance about runaway bride Yvonne, who legs it from her own wedding and chooses the groom's cousin as her getaway driver. Leo has had a crush on Yvonne forever, but struggles with high reserve and low self esteem (which he doesn't make other people's problem. We like Leo.)

It's mostly about Yvonne's slow realisation that she's lived most of her life attempting to fulfil everyone else's expectations--domineering father and nagging mother who can barely be placated by perfection, then a fiance with very little interest in her as a person. The abusive family dynamics are pretty painful, and it's not something that gets fixed over a week of hot sex, but we see Yvonne blossom with the support of loving and unjudgemental people (nit just Leo, but friends and family), and it's lovely.

I'm a bit conflicted on this one. It kept me engaged and reading, which hasn't happened in a while. However, it lacked depth, and the sex felt out of character. There were interesting themes, the male MC feels unworthy, unintelligent, and too poor for her to be interested. Why does he feel that way? Remained unclear. Does she address those insecurities to help him grow? Nope. That's a miss. As for her, she does grow, but it also didn't feel that earned. She ran away from her wedding partly because she had all the mental load in the relationship and we don't reallt see that would be different with the male MC. At the end she is like "I'll plan our next vacation on my own", he is chill and does whatever she wants but doesn't take initiative to do anything, he never cooks for her or offer to take her anywhere. So she seems to have the mental load again which was a miss. Their relationship was too focused on sex for me. Yes, they talk about what they want for the future, but that didn't feel like enough. He is obsessed with her as soon as he sees her, and that felt like that was mostly based on appearances. It wasn't a total bust but not my favorite

I received an advance copy from the author for review purposes; this in no way influences my review.

I love how much food is central to Jackie Lau books and how I’m basically guaranteed to find something fun and lighthearted in her stories. The whole premise of Three Reasons to Run sounded like it would be a delight, and I’m so glad I got to read it!

Yvonne has been in a relationship with Carl for five years, engaged for two, and in that time she’s slowly been realizing that it wasn’t a relationship that fulfilled her or she could see a positive future for. So on the day of her wedding, just as she gets to the altar, she turns and runs away. Luckily she runs into Leo, who was late after receiving his first speeding ticket, and he’s more than happy to get her away so she has the space to figure out What Next.

This was a really fun story and I loved the friendship that grew between Leo and Yvonne as they spent more time together. I also really loved Yvonne using this abrupt change in her life as an opportunity to reevaluate who she is and wants to be, including putting energy into her friendship with Shauna that had been lacking in recent years. Leo having had a crush on Yvonne since he first met her two years ago at her engagement party was also navigated so well, in my opinion, where we see the internal feelings but first and foremost his concern is making sure Yvonne is comfortable and happy.

I had a lot of fun with this, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book, featuring Evan Mok and his friend Jane, who are getting married! Jackie Lau books really are guaranteed to be something warmhearted and fun, and this was the perfect story for this week.

This one didn’t quite do it for me as a first book in the series. I just didn’t feel the connection between Leo and Yvonne; it lacked depth, and I hated that Leo felt unworthy and unintelligent while she did absolutely nothing to show him how wrong he was, especially after everything he did for her.

I just couldn’t connect to their story. The smut was good, though.

Three Reasons to Run was a good second book in the Weddings with the Moks series. I liked both Yvonne and Leo, though I think I got a better sense of Yvonne and her challenges. I also liked Lynne and Howie (Leo's parents) quite a bit. My rating is hovering between three and four stars (I may upgrade later) as I think I would have liked a longer resolution. I am very curious about the next book.

Smart Bitches Summer Bingo: Free space

Leo Mok (younger brother of Max, from Four Weddings to Fall in Love) is late for his cousin Carl's wedding because he got a speeding ticket. He's not exactly thrilled to be going, since he's had a crush on the bride since he first saw her at a family gathering two years ago. He's about to leave his car when the bride comes running out of the church and nearly crashes into him. She implores him to help her get out of there, and Leo wouldn't hesitate to help a woman in distress, even if he wasn't infatuated with her. He takes her to buy ice cream and helps her fetch her things from her apartment before anyone comes home.

Yvonne Siu is a people pleaser and has always tried to be the perfect daughter and later girlfriend. She could never understand why her older sister was always in conflict with her parents and eventually rebelled and cut all contact with them. She's been in a relationship with Carl for five years, and while she hasn't really felt appreciated or satisfied for a long time, she invested a lot of time and effort into the relationship. She even forgives Carl for cheating on her. However, as she is walking up the aisle, she just can't make herself marry him. She flees and is deeply grateful to Leo for helping her escape the awkward scene of her wedding.

Even if Leo hadn't been present in the parking lot as Yvonne came storming out of the church, she would have had an escape available. Shortly before the ceremony, Yvonne spoke to Leo's mother, who could tell she was having doubts and gave Yvonne her car keys just in case. Once Yvonne clears out her things from the apartment she shares with her now ex-fiancée, Leo's parents offer to let her stay with them at their house until she can find a place of her own. So Yvonne ends up crashing temporarily in Leo's old bedroom.

While Leo tries to keep his distance, he is completely unable to say no every time Yvonne asks for help, or to hang out, and later, because she's never really had a satisfying sexual experience, to "show her a good time". Leo knows that he shouldn't want his cousin's ex, and Yvonne has a lot of work she needs to do before she's certain she's ready for anything new. Can there ever be anything more between them than friendship and casual sex?

Jackie Lau has written quite a few novels where the couple's HEA (happily ever after) doesn't involve becoming parents. When they reconnect after she runs from her wedding, Yvonne discovers that her sister is heavily pregnant. Once her nephew is born, Yvonne is happy to spend time with the baby, but it also confirms to her that she doesn't actually want children of her own. Running away from her own wedding shakes up Yvonne's life drastically, and she's left with a lot of time to think and reconsider her wants and priorities for her future. It becomes very clear to her that being a mother is not part of that future.

Her thoughts on motherhood are not the only things that Yvonne needs to consider. Having been a "good girl" her entire life, trying to be the perfect daughter who never caused any trouble, and later the perfect girlfriend and fiancée, it's only after leaving her Carl that she realises how unhappy she was. Seeing her sister, entirely estranged from their parents, so happy with her partner and seeing Leo's parents, many years married, also in a healthy, functioning relationship, she comes to understand how toxic the situation she grew up in was, and how controlling and demanding her father was. Her ex wasn't emotionally abusive, like her dad, but he did take her for granted and never seemed interested in or cared about what Yvonne liked, wanted or needed.

Leo is quiet and rather taciturn and doesn't think he's in any way good enough for Yvonne. He's also so smitten that despite knowing it's a bad idea, he still takes every chance to spend more time with her. He takes care of her favourite plan, he will happily hang out with her, or go for a meal with her, and he ends up going on her honeymoon with her. Agreeing to casual sex so she finally discovers what a satisfying sex life is like? He isn't going to say no to that. He has to come to terms with the fact that while his life might seem quiet and boring next to those of his siblings, he's a kind, helpful and very thoughtful person, and wanting what is best for the person you love isn't a bad quality in a partner.

While I liked this, it wasn't one of my favourite of Lau's books. She doesn't write bad books, but this one felt 'just fine' instead of 'really great', if that makes sense? Your mileage may vary.

Judging a book by its cover: Maybe not the most exciting of covers, but the wedding bouquet is very pretty and the flowers and the pastel colours give a good indication of the book's content (a wedding will be involved, it's unlikely to be a very angsty read).

I've been looking forward to this book since I read the first one in the series, and it did not disappoint!

Leo Mok has always known that he wasn't the "smart one" of his brothers, and he's OK with that. Sure, his post-secondary school choices weren't the ones his parents wanted for him, but he's content with his life choices...mostly. And then he meets his cousin's fiancée.

Yvonne Siu seems to be everything Leo didn't even know he was looking for, and she's marrying Leo's least favorite cousin, Carl. Is that why he left his place a little late for their wedding? Maybe. But since having to stop for his first ever speeding ticket en route meant he was in the right place at the right time to give the runaway bride a ride, he's not going to examine his motivations too closely.

I loved watching Leo and Yvonne grow closer as they spend more time together--theirs is a slow burn romance, at least partly due to the guilt they both feel about Carl. Once they decide to go for it, though, things heat up FAST. (And there are no complaints here!) Their path to an HEA was still complicated, though--Leo doesn't feel he's good enough for Yvonne, and she's determined to focus on rebuilding her life and stay relationship free (for now)--but of course, ultimately oh so satisfying.

I really liked that Ms Lau isn't afraid to have her MCs make somewhat unconventional "life" (by which I mean life inside a romance novel) choices--this time about marriage and having children. HEAs aren't going to be the same for everyone, IRL and in fiction, and I love that she always lets her characters choose their own paths.

Also--OMG, Yvonne's search history sections! Pretty sure each list made me snort laugh at least once. And don't get me started on Leo's conversations with Francine--even when Francine wasn't even there. So gosh darn adorable.

As she did in the first book, Ms Lau gave us a "Hang on...WHAT???" moment at the end of the epilogue that pretty much guarantees you'll be anxiously haunting her profile page to see when Evan's book will be out...

I see what you did there, Ms Lau ;)

Oh yes, this is what I’m looking for in a Jackie Lau book. Three Reasons to Run is a tight, warm, emotionally resonant book with characters who are going through it. Just my sort of book.

Three Reasons to Run reminded me of Lau’s earlier work The Stand-Up Groomsman in that its major emotional beat focuses on worth and family expectations. Yvonne had settled into her expected life; having built a version of herself she believed she wanted because it was what was wanted for her by her parents and her fiancé. But when it comes to walking down the aisle, she can’t do it and turns tail and flees the sanctuary. Three Reasons to Run picks up where Four Weddings to Fall in Love leaves off on Yvonne and Carl’s wedding day that wasn’t, with Yvonne running out of the church and into Leo Mok.

Lau takes a more serious tone than in some of her other books and focuses on Leo and Yvonne’s needs for emotional growth. He’s got some serious self-esteem issues (which are addressed but not solved by the end of the book) and she needs to figure out who she is when she lets herself just be. There is a lot in this book that focuses on how we handle expectations, the ways in which dysfunctional relationships can be inherited, and how both those things interact with larger family dynamics. I loved the way Lau placed Leo and Yvonne in each other’s orbits and gave them and the reader more time with Leo’s parents, who really shine here. I also appreciated the ways in which Yvonne and Leo were honest with each other, and the ways in which they couldn’t see around the obstacles of real life in real time. This one shares a high steam rating with its predecessor, as well as Lau’s focuses on highlighting delicious food and the greater Toronto environs. I look forward to seeing these two more in the next Weddings with the Moks book whenever it makes its way to readers.

I love a Jackie Lau novel that gets into the conflict between family expectations and living an authentic life. Lau has given Yvonne and Leo rich interior lives that they slowly reveal to one another. Yvonne is finding out who she is when she isn’t being the good girl. Leo doesn’t share much of himself, but he will for Yvonne.

At the end of Four Weddings to Fall in Love, Kim sees Max’s mom, Lynne, help Yvonne flee her wedding. Lynne’s kindness and practical support help Kim overcome her fears about committing to Max. When Yvonne flees, she runs into Leo Mok, who is arriving late. He drives her away and spends a surreal afternoon with the woman he has been secretly in love with. Leo knows that he still can’t make a move on her because she is just out of a relationship with his cousin. But he offers to take care of her beloved snake plant, Francine, goes out to brunch with her, and agrees to be her sex friend, as long as they follow his rules which will surely prevent their sex from becoming complicated.

Yvonne has a big journey of self-discovery. She has always been the good girl who follows expectations. Her biggest act of rebellion before becoming a runaway bride was loving her houseplants enough to give them names. As she grapples with being a disappointment for the first time, she’s able to center her own wants. One of those wants is Leo. She learns that she was wrong about herself in her sexcapades with Leo, and it opens up her path to figuring out who she really is.

Leo is quiet, almost subterranean. He doesn’t reveal much about what he’s thinking or feeling. His emotional arc is quieter than Yvonne’s, but no less satisfying. The stoic guy who doesn’t talk much and works out a lot starts to let out the whimsical artist parts.

As always when reading a Jackie Lau book, I am fantasizing about a gastronomic tour of Toronto.

I received this as an advance reader copy from the author. My opinions are my own, freely and honestly given.

Yvonne Siu flees her wedding right when she's about to marry Leo's cousin. He always had a thing for her, but especially now when she's angry. He helps her move out of her apartment, and the two get close enough for her to trust him and let him know she's never been sexually satisfied before. Now he feels obligated to step up and help out there as well, even though she nearly became family.

This is the second book in the "Weddings with the Moks" series. Yvonne is set to marry Leo's cousin Carl, but when walking down the aisle she chokes and runs out of the church. She had been living with him for a while and was overwhelmed with all his comments about children she'd have to take care of, doing things without consulting with her, and putting down her houseplants. This makes her see that marriage is a hassle and not something she particularly wants. Leo just happened to be there when she was leaving but had a silent crush on her for some time. He's the quiet type, not saying much and thinking he isn't good enough because he didn't go to college right after school, but he's artsy and does well at his design job.

At first, Leo helps her get her things, spends time with her as a friend, and helps her figure out what she wants to do with her life going forward. Spending time together means they get closer, and the attraction is mutual. Yvonne is scared it's a rebound, and even Leo is concerned that it is. But the two fit together well, and their families and friends all see more to them than they initially do. This is a cute sort-of second chance romance leading to a happily ever after and a teaser for a third Mok book.

I loved the premise of this book. Yvonne runs from the altar and runs into Leo, her almost husband’s cousin. Leo has had a crush on Yvonne since he met her and felt guilty about it even if he’s not close at all with his cousin. Nevertheless he can’t stop himself from helping her not only fleeing the church but also putting her life back together. I really like this series because its focus on wedding makes it textbook romcom. Each book teases the next and I liked this book even more than the first one in the series. They are also hotter than other Lau’s books.

Three Reasons to Run has the dry narration and the focus on Toronto’s food scene that we’ve come to expect. I liked the main characters and I think they were made for each other but I wanted more, I wanted them to knew each other better and I wanted a bit more especially on Leo. With Yvonne we explored a lot of important themes in a small time and I believe synthesis is one of Lau’s gifts because it worked (even if it could have been expanded) but on Leo’s side the focus was more on his family. For both Yvonne and Kim (the first book’s female main character) in-laws are a fraught topic and being them Asian Canadian it is an important one. The Moks are a sweet family and I appreciated it. I think nurturing and accepting in-laws can be a part of the fantasy of romance (see Chloe Liese’s Bergmans).

I loved Francine and how Leo talked to her (mind you Francine is a plant but also an important side character). I found Leo very dreamy, as you can tell from the fact I wanted more about his character.

Jackie Lau stays on my must read list. I was vey happy to receive an ARC from the author and provide a honest opinion

I loved Three Reasons to Run from its very first chapter, which is narrated by bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold Leo Mok. He's late to a family wedding and has a crush on the bride - who runs away from the altar and straight into his car.

The runaway bride is Yvonne, she alternates POV chapters with Leo, and her journey is actually the more significant one. After a lifetime of people-pleasing she's finally learning to pursue her own desires. Topping the list is lots of great sex, which (after some persuasion) Leo is happy to provide.

There's a fair amount of spice in Three Reasons, motivated by old-fashioned chemistry as well as Yvonne's evolving understanding of her sexual self. And there's quite a lot else happening in this slim, quick-to-read novel. Sibling dynamics; marital gender roles; the long shadow of expectation in immigrant families (all the major characters are Asian-Canadian) - it would be hard for even a much longer book to fully explore all these issues. But Three Reasons, although it centers on Leo and Yvonne's romance, gives readers a peek at a constellation of interconnected lives that left me wanting a lot more. Fortunately, there are three other books in its tetralogy.

This is the 2nd book in the Weddings with the Moks series

Leo is late to his cousin Carl's wedding and as he's parking, the bride, Yvonne, runs out of the church and into his car . Yvonne tells him she has 3 reasons why she can't marry Carl and asks Leo to drive her away from the church. And Leo is harboring a secret -- he's always had a crush on Yvonne. As time goes on and their lives become more intertwined a relationship develops, but where will it go when Carl is Leo's cousin and both his family and Yvonne's family are distressed over the canceled wedding?

This friends-to-lovers story is full of emotion and family drama . Each have personal issues that need working on and each does do some of this throughout the story while working on their budding friendship and romantic relationship. This is an open door story and if you prefer closed door just skip those pages. It won't impact your enjoyment of the story. Note: This book is not as steamy as the first one.

This story ends a bit abruptly and leaves us with a mystery for the 3rd book which I'm looking forward to.

Three Reasons to Run picks up as Yvonne runs out of her wedding to Carl (from Four Weddings to Fall in Love). She departs the ceremony and collides with Leo Mok in the parking lot. He helps her leave and they develop a connection over the coming weeks. The would-be groom(Carl) is Leo’s cousin, and Leo’s had a crush on Yvonne for years. He tries to keep it all together when they hang out, but it doesn’t last. His feelings continue to grow and Yvonne asks him to help her with intimacy. When Yvonne asks Leo to go on the honeymoon she had planned with Carl, things change for both characters.

I enjoy how Jackie Lau writes novels that follow characters that readers are introduced in a previous novel. I already felt connected to Leo and Yvonne from the first page. Three Reasons to Run references the pandemic in a way that makes sense; a period where isolation changed things for many people. Yvonne and Leo’s story kept me interested and I look forward to the next story.

Thank you to Jackie Lau and bookfunnel for providing me with a digital ARC of this novel.

I read this book as an advance reader copy courtesy of the author. In this charming novel, author Jackie Lau does her usual wonderful job of writing about love. She manages to balance family relationships, unexpected romance, and the aftermath of a seemingly impulsive decision—the classic runaway bride. Yvonne Siu’s dash away from the church occurs when she realizes that marrying the cheating, smarmy, needs-to-be-punched Carl would be the biggest mistake of her life. And when she finds Leo Mok, cousin to Carl, coming late to the wedding, and he offers her a ride away from the venue, she jumps in—and she finally lives her life. Leo and Yvonne come with expected issues—she feels guilty for the late-minute change of heart, and he has reservations because of his cousin Carl, even though they’re not close. But they are drawn to each other, and Lau blends her usual sensual and emotional story that the reader will remember afterward.

This was a fun, dual POV, runaway bride, cousin's ex fiance romance between two Asian Canadian MCs living in Toronto. I am a huge Jackie Lau fan and this latest delivered on all the feels, HEAT and relatable main characters.

I loved that Yvonne had no interest in being a mom or a door mat of a wife and finally found the courage to stand up for the life she really wanted rather than continue living to please others in her life. Leo was the ultimate dream boyfriend. Showing up when Yvonne needed a friend and then stepping up when she wanted some hot no strings orgasms.

Many thanks to the author for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review. I voluntarily read this book and all opinions are my own. Now I can't wait for the next book in the Weddings with the Moks series!!.

THREE REASONS TO RUN is the second in Jackie Lau’s Weddings with the Moks series. Leo Mok has crushed on Yvonne Siu ever since laying eyes on her, but has kept that to himself for that time since she happened to be his cousin’s fiancée. When Yvonne finally determined to not marry that guy, Leo bit his tongue and helped her move and cared for her plants, not expecting that to lead to a growing friendship and some mutually agreed upon fiery benefits.

Jackie Lau does a good job revealing what’s in these two’s hearts and gives them the chance to discover what they are really seeking. Loved getting to know the Mok family better as well. Great read.

Really cute and I liked the heroine taking some time to be on her own before deciding to be in another relationship and also the unexpected foray into exhibitionism was hot! I liked that Leo’s mom told him she was proud of him and that Yvonne’s mom left her marriage, inspired by Yvonne bolting from her wedding. Carl was the worst and I’m glad Yvonne told his mom he’d cheated on her and she was properly horrified.

Leo and Yvonne had great chemistry in this romance. I liked Leo as a quiet, artistic hero and Yvonne as someone who needed to find space to explore who she was and what she actually wanted in life. The ending had a bit more drama than I prefer, but otherwise thoroughly enjoyable.

A quiet book in many ways because Leo doesn't talk a lot but he is absolutely devoted to Yvonne from the first moment while allowing her to make choices for herself for the first time. It's beautiful and sexy.

Typical Jackie Lau: complex family dynamics, good friendships, and reasonably realistic lead characters. One thing I appreciate with her is that she gives her heroes normal, diverse bodies instead of inexplicably sculpted abs, 6'2" height, and the world's biggest you-know-what. I start to get annoyed when I find that body positivity doesn't extend to the male characters in romances, but rarely have to worry about that with Jackie Lau. Leo is portrayed as being attractive, and he's got some vulnerabilities that make you instantly fond of him, but he's not a male model.
The way he describes Yvonne, however, made me immediately picture a young Anita Mui.

Speaking of insane levels of beauty...

Yvonne was a great heroine. She's got a rough family life and has been doing her best to be perfect and prioritize everyone but herself...right up until she runs out on her own wedding and into Leo's car. Her affection for her plants is one of her many adorable characteristics.
Speaking of adorable, though, my favorite part of the whole book was Leo's parents. The clear affection they have for each other and their children is sweet without being saccharine, and the way they embrace Yvonne is pure heart-warming delight.

I’m enjoying this series a lot! It’s very sexy but also with charming characters. Leo is quiet and a bit stoic, yet he’s artistic and so supportive of Yvonne. And Yvonne is finding her confidence in a lot of big ways. The inclusion of houseplants was also cute and fun.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!
