Dawn Crandall’s debut Gilded Age Victorian romance, “The Hesitant Heiress,” was a 2015 ACFW Carol award finalist in the debut category and received the 2015 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, the 2015 Write Touch Reader's Choice Award and the 2015 Romancing the Novel Reader's Choice Award. Her follow-up novel, “The Bound Heart,” received the 2016 Laurel Award from Clash of the Titles. Dawn earned a BA in Christian Education from Taylor University. She’s been balancing books and babies lately as her two sons were both born as the first four books of her 5-book Everstone Chronicles series were being released from Whitaker House from 2014 to 2016. I’ve noticed that if you purchase the kindle edition of the book, it might take you to the beginning of chapter one to begin reading—but there is a very important PROLOGUE before chapter one! Please read the prologue!

Oh my! What a very powerful novel! I do believe that the second half of reading The Bound Heart (which is a very fitting title) I had tears rolling down my face on and off until the end.

It has been a while since I have read an emotional story where I truly wanted to put it down because it was hitting so close to my heart. I very much related to Meredyth concerning one time in my life and it was hard for me to relive those memories through her story.

However just as I found and Meredyth does, there is such grace, forgiveness, and love found in God! Despite how much that she believed she didn’t deserve any of God’s love, God blessed her with His love and cleanliness because He loved her so much.

I do recommend this second novel by Dawn as she has such an amazing writing voice with flawed characters who experiences not only love from a significant other, but most importantly from God too. Plus the romance and the storyline are amazing! Be forewarned though that this is a tough novel to read, but the ending is so much more beautiful because of all that happens within its pages.

I have long held the opinion that only a very well written book can bring both sad and happy tears to my eyes. That being said, it's official: this book is very well written. ;) I thought at first that I would be able to keep from crying over this story. After all, I knew it was going to end well and happy. But--- nope! I still cried. And then I cried over the happy ending too!

I think my very favorite thing about this book was getting to see Meredyth grow and change the way she did. And the first person pov really enhanced that. And Lawry! May I just say that Lawry is my new favorite hero? Because he is. How could you not love this guy?! (I couldn't help but think how nice it would have been to see things from his perspective sometimes, but the story just wouldn't have been the same if his pov had been included.) And Wynn... Such a sweetheart! I did figure out the mystery surrounding her quite quickly (didn't seem like much of a mystery to me), but that's okay. It was still very interesting reading how things worked out with her in the end.

One thing that I would have expected to annoy me was how determined Meredyth was that she was bound to Vance and nothing at all could ever change that. She was so determined to punish herself. Forgiveness wasn't an option for her because she didn't deserve it. But I couldn't be annoyed by this because it made sense. I could only feel heartbroken over the thought of anyone feeling this way. Meredyth's deceitful heart (you'll understand that reference if you've already read the book) convinced her that she couldn't be forgiven. How often our hearts do that to us. They totally convince us of something and won't allow God's truth to shine through; and, as a result, we won't accept forgiveness even though it's already been given. This lesson came through so clearly and in a way that brought those tears to my eyes once again.

There are some more mature topics that might not be appropriate for younger readers. But everyone else? Yes, definitely read it. I highly recommend it! I liked it even better than the first book --- somehow I knew I would. Dawn Crandall is very quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I can't tell y'all how much I have enjoyed "discovering" this author. :)

If you haven't read The Hesitant Heiress yet, I do recommend reading it first. While I suppose it's not necessary in order to understand this book, it will help you fit everything and everyone into place and enjoy the story even more.

I totally loved this one. So engaging, wonderful and romantic! I liked how all the same characters from the first book, The Hesitant Heiress were also in this one; it saved me the confusion of who-is-related-to-whom-and-how in the beginning, that I had encountered in the previous story. Picking up where Lawry and Meredyth left off in The Hesitant Heiress, The Bound Heart tells their story, the story of two childhood friends realizing that there may be a deeper bond than friendship uniting them. Lawry Hampton (who is good-looking, kind, generous, charitable, strong, and just plain perfect -- I'm in love with him) has loved Meredyth for ever since he could remember, but she has always seen him as a good friend, almost one of the family since they've been friends since childhood. But after a long absence, Lawry is determined to woo and win Meredyth, and to prove her that her rightful place is as his soulmate. Meredyth soon finds her defenses slowly crumpling under Lawry's swoon-worthy ways (and by that I mean extremely gentleman-like behaviour, altruistic motives, rescuing orphans, and a breathtaking accidental kiss), but a deep, painful secret buried in her heart prevents her from fully giving in to Lawry's attentions. Perhaps you can tell where this is going...yep. A misunderstanding. Always a misunderstanding.

I found it less enraging than the one in The Hesitant Heiress, and in fact, I was totally fine with it until the almost-end, where the author followed the same trope as her first novel and had the heroine brutally reject the hero for reasons that seem logical to her, but are in reality completely irrational and omg-no-why-are-you-doing-this-we've-already-been-through-all-of-that-before-stop-behaving-like-a-fool-and-get-married-to-the-guy-already. Hmph. The last quarter of the book had me rolling my eyes a lot because of heroine's said foolish behaviour, but the rest of the book was overall so good, and was so into it, that when I look back and think "How do I really feel about this book?", I feel such a positive "It was so awesome! Everybody read it!!" kind of feel, that I have to give it a five, because I know that I strongly recommend it, and will definitely read it again someday (and be prepared in advance for The. Misunderstanding.). The hero, if you haven't already guessed, is perfection embodied, the heroine was for the most part lively, fun and open-minded, and I loved the new characters that were introduced. The cute girl Wynn definitely stole my heart, the villain was top-of-the-top villainous, and everyone else just fit really well into it all.

I cannot wait for The Captive Impostor, the next book of the series, to be released!!! I really look forward to reading Estella's story, even though so far I don't really like her, nor her potential hero. It should be pretty interesting! ;)

The Bound Heart is a beautiful story of forgiveness and redemption. Meredyth Summercourt's heart is truly bound into a life she feels was set into motion for her one summer day years before.

Dawn Crandall has a very distinct writing style that I found myself loving more and more as I read. She writes in first-person and writes it very well - Meredyth's voice is crystal clear, and I loved getting to know her throughout the story. The tone of the story is often a bit mysterious, which I loved. The plot itself kept me guessing - there are a few surprises that propelled the action along in a realistic way.

And can we just pause a moment and talk about one of the most gentlemanly male leads that I've had the pleasure to read about in a while! Lawry Hampton was such a kind, sweet soul that loved Meredyth in spite of how hard and unforgiving she was toward herself. Sometimes it's just nice to have a male lead that is just loyal and constant, not distant and cold. And make no mistake - the romance here is not cheesy, nor easy, but filled with passion and bumps along the way. Quite swoon-worthy at times!

As for the spiritual aspect of the novel, there was so much to appreciate here. Sometimes I am the last person to forgive myself, when I know that God already has forgiven me - my heart ached for Meredyth as she clung to an idea of redemption in the wrong place and ultimately found it in the perfect place.

And tiny, sweet orphaned Wynn! What a darling little girl - I think one of my favorite things is when she calls Meredyth "Meredy," talk about making my heart melt. I just loved the scenes between those two, as well as the mystery surrounding Wynn's parentage - usually I call things pretty earlier on, but this rather caught me off guard.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Bound Heart for fans of inspirational historials, with a good measure of romance. Although I think it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading The Hesitant Heiress first - Dawn has connected these families in a very neat way - you feel like you've known them all as long as they've known each other. I fell very easily into their various relationships and intertwined pasts.

Dawn Crandall has such a unique style of writing. As I read her books I feel like I'm floating through the story, not quite grounded. That's the only way I can think to describe it! There is the sense that things can change in an instant, and I never know what the characters are going to do or are truly thinking or feeling in the beginning, but thankfully that is revealed throughout the novel. In the first book I saw Meredyth as a strong individual, but in this book we are able to understand her insecurities and vulnerabilities. It was frustrating that Meredyth didn't allow herself to enjoy falling in love with Lawry and had a misguided perception of redemption that made her feel unworthy of him. The spiritual journey she experiences shows how letting go of our own limited expectations of life will allow God to bring to pass wonderful blessings and miracles to the faithful.

This is a beautiful story of redemption – with an honorable and swoon-worthy (and I don’t say that lightly) hero!

The characters Dawn writes simply jump off the page and immerse the reader in the story. Lawry was very sweet and steadfast, while Meredyth was likable and insecure. She was very easy to identify with, I thought, because her struggles and doubts of self-worth are common to women. Like Meredyth, we ladies sometimes doubt our choices, our merit, or our futures – but we should find our security and hope in Jesus. I believe Meredyth is drawn to Lawry partly due to the love of God that emanates from his character and actions. This story shows that all it takes is calling out to God, and He will take your burdens.

There is a beautiful thread of redemption in the story, with surprising drama (a few fabulous twists!) and interesting secondary characters. I loved little Wynn and her honest childlike faith. She sweetly tied some of the characters together in unexpected ways. I also enjoyed the setting of the story, with the elaborate events society demanded at the time contrasting with the plights of little children like Wynn.

This is a great sophomore novel from Dawn! I can’t wait to catch up with these characters again in the third book, The Captive Imposter, releasing February of 2015.

I was so excited to receive an advance copy of this book to review. This is book number 2 in the Everstone Chronicles series. And it was fabulous! Just as good as the first, if not better. It is a tough call. I found myself saying I would only read so much and next thing I know I had stayed up way late to finish it. Yes, it was that good! I have found that I really enjoy this authors writing style. And I love the characters of this series. I can hardly wait for book number 3! I would highly recommend this book to anyone but especially if you like Historical Fiction.

I am mesmerized. I cannot put into words how I feel after reading this book. Speechless. There seems a void after having finished this book and that in my opinion is a sign of a good book.


The ability of author Dawn Crandall to pen the basics of pure love in such a simple and touching way is the highlight of the books in the series. She has the ability to take us back to the basics of what true and pure love is, what it should be which sadly many have forgotten. A splendid and superlative journey through a mesmerizing story which is not just about undying love but also about faith, empathy, steadfastness, and awakening about one’s belief in God.



The Bound Heart is the second book from The Everstone Chronicles series and takes us through the story of childhood friends Lawrence Hampton and Meredyth Summercourt. Best friends since childhood and unknown to her, Lawry has been in love with Meredyth since forever while she has been adamant to marry Vance Everstone, whom she holds herself bound to be married to for a sin of their past. Unplanned events lead to Meredyth starting to fall in love with Lawry and she is then torn between her lover for Lawry and her presumed duty of marrying Vance.


The beauty of the book lies in a few things: For one, it is the unwavering, untiring and steadfast love Lawry bears for Meredyth; secondly, Meredyth’s own guilt and awakening towards the love of God. Along with these, what I found the most touching element was Lawry and Wynn’s relationship. I cried at the scene where Lawry is trying to convince Wynn about her welfare in staying with Vance while Meredyth is secretly peeping through the door. It is for me the best scene of the book.

“All brave men love; for he only is brave who has affections to fight for…”

Lawry Hampton! What do I say about him? He is indeed a character one just cannot refuse to love and one who teaches others love. Wow, I mean how can someone fathom such a simple yet powerful character! I love him! Absolutely! Steadfastly waiting for the woman he loves and hoping and praying for his dreams to be fulfilled. A man with a heart overflowing with love and empathy, ready to accept the love of his life with all her faults. There is a serenity to his love for Meredyth.

Meredyth Summercourt is the darling of fortune. Blessed with everything life can offer, she lives the privileged life of Boston but with immense guilt in her heart. Willing to do good for others, she still is apprehensive of what her family might think of her. Devoted to marrying only Vance Everstone, she rejects all suitors and has her eyes completely shut to Lawry’s feelings. Considering herself guilty she feels she is caged in and the feeling of being bound makes her fear letting the barriers fall for Lawry. Her POV is brought about in a very interesting manner. How she fights her feelings and how hard she tries can be understood by the constant contemplation she undergoes.

“We loved with a love that was more than love”

And their love! So beautiful! They are truly meant to be. The portrayal of their relationship after Meredyth starts loving him and her recognition of Lawry’s feelings for herself are indeed a pleasure to read. She is guilty that she doesn’t deserve him while he loves her unquestioningly and unwaveringly. After much trepidation Meredyth finally allows acknowledgement of their love and what bliss it is indeed in their lives! You have to read it and experience it yourself to enjoy it.

“Groans that words cannot express are often prayers that God cannot refuse.”

The test Lawry and Meredyth have to go through! And not just that, the heart wrenching plight of Wynn Roselette is just unmistakably touching. Unexpected circumstances again distance them from each other and this is the most emotional part of the book where you constantly have a lump in your throat. The beauty of the way Dawn Crandall brings out the characters’ feelings is for what you should make it a point to read this book. It just cannot be explained in words. Though Lawry, Meredyth and even Wynn are suffering, my heart went out for Lawry chiefly and even for Wynn. Meredyth faces very crucial circumstances herself and the awakening she deserves finally and after much anguish dawns on her.

“And his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.”

Finally, the happily ever after! After a tumultuous roller coaster ride of emotions they all go through, things finally shine bright for them. It is worth every minute and emotion you put in this book. The last one third of the book, I guarantee you, you will have a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes.


One may find that my review is mostly involved with discussion about and venting of my thoughts regarding the story as opposed to any kind of unyielding critique here. But, in all honesty this book is perfect. Whether it is the story, the plot, the characters or the writing everything is as it should be.


Also, the way the author has carried on from The Hesitant Heiress to The Bound Heart feels as if we are seeing the events occurring practically in our own lives. How Nathan and Amaryllis have progressed in their lives is one very interesting aspect of this one. It’s as if the author has answered the reader’s question of how Nathan and Amaryllis have been doing after settling down in Washington. It makes the series seem so real. While Nichollete’s presence and her story are continued here, we also meet the familiar Claudine Abernathy again, and Jay Crawford also gives an appearance. Further, Estella’s struggle is still on. I just can’t wait to know what happens with her life in The Captive Imposter. Vance Everstone will check your patience, but is in fact a very interesting character.



Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking out for a moving, touching tale of love and belonging. Even after saying so much, I still feel that I haven’t said enough and yet I feel speechless. The gist of the matter is GO READ THE BOOK AND FALL IN LOVE WITH LAWRY AND MEREDYTH.

I loved The Bound Heart. Dawn has did it again, she has another winner. Her first book The Hesitant Heiress was great, but The Bound Heart is even better.
Dawn brings her characters alive . You should read The Hesitant Heiress first, but The Bound Heart can be read alone.. I did not have any problems following the story or the characters. I loved the main characters Meredyth and Lawry. Meredyth has some older brothers and she grew up with Lawry. She can tell him almost anything. She does not know what she wants. Her actions in the past has her feeling that she is not worthy of any man. She has been waiting around for years for Vance Everstone to come back and marry her. Lawry has feeling for meredyth and cannot understand her feelings for Vance. There was times I wanted to scream at Meredyth and tell her that God forgives. Will Meredyth listen to God and get her heart right? What will Meredyth do if Vance does come back home?

Meredyth Summercourt is determined to marry Vance Everstone. She must. It cannot be otherwise. She needs to face the consequences of something that happened in her past and make amends. But a kiss from her best friend Lawry Hampton will change everything. Does she deserve Lawry’s love? Or is she forever bound to a man she does not love?

After quite a slow start I thought that this book would not be as engaging as the first one. Well, I am happy to report that I was completely mistaken!! This story was so compelling I had a very hard time putting it down! The second half of it was really beautiful with both its uplifting and sad moments, and I ended up loving it.

Meredyth was very endearing. I felt for her throughout the whole book because of her pain and guilt. She thought that nothing and no one could help her, nobody could save her, and she lived for six years with a burden that it was impossible to get rid of. Nowadays things are different and I do not think that modern women would feel so damaged and ruined if they experienced what Meredyth went through. But what made me think was Lawry’s behaviour. Would modern men react as Lawry did? If the woman they love revealed them a secret like that, what would they do? I confess I was really surprised at his reaction -if we think that the book is set in 1891- but of course, I could not ask for a better ending! *Curious to know Meredyth’s secret? Hehe, you will have to read the book. I will not spoil anything!*

I already liked both these characters from the previous book, but reading their story and getting to know them better was lovely! I had a different opinion about Meredyth since she seemed rather carefree and happy in “The Hesitant Heiress”, and seeing her so anxious and ashamed of herself in “The Bound Heart” was not that pleasant, at least in the beginning. But then something changed, and I have to thank her scenes with Lawry. He let her good, marvellous side shine out and by the end of the novel, she was another girl, another woman. Lawry really was a great hero! Sweet, trustworthy and upright. And I simply adored his relationship with a little orphan, Wynn, that he found on the street.

As for the villain... Goodness! I did not expect HIM to be the villain! And what a despicable man! I do not think it is a spoiler if I say that one of the Everstone brothers I was eager to meet will cause lots of problems to our dear couple. But in the end, he seems to change a bit and now I cannot wait to read his story! I am very curious to see if he will take Nathan (the hero in the first book) and Lawry’s place in my heart!

Touching and with a deep, inspiring Christian message, “The Bound Heart” is a book for all those people who believe in God’s unfailing love, and that are willing to let Him guide their steps.

Note: This is book number two in the “Everstone Chronicles” series but I think it can be read as a standalone. Though I would suggest reading “The Hesitant Heiress” as well to meet Nathan and Amaryllis and fall in love with their romance!

Dawn Crandall has a way of completely immersing the reader into the world of her characters. I feel like I know each one of them and I don't want to leave the story. In this installment, Meredyth is the focus. I was very curious about her past after reading the first book and was thrilled to learn more about her. She has an invisible thread binding her to Vance, the elusive Everstone brother who is living in Europe. Fighting her growing feelings for family friend, Lawry, prove to be difficult, if impossible, but this "thread" won't let her move forward--unless she can find a way to break it.

My emotions were definitely played upon throughout this book. At times, I felt hopelessness for Meredyth's situation and her battle is implied from the very first chapter. My romantic heartstrings were twanged as I felt the chemistry leap off of the pages with the tension and sweet moments that ensued. My feelings of hope surfaced when Lawry and Meredyth rescue an orphan girl and help her--that sweet little Wynn almost stole the show! There are moments of joy, sorrow, despair, shock, and more as the story progresses and I loved every single minute of it all. I felt like I arose from a daze when I finished the last word, only to realize that I wasn't in 1890 New England.

The themes subtly woven through the book of forgiveness and unconditional love, especially of oneself, are what really touched my heart. I loved watching the journey these characters took to figure that out. These are strong people and I really want to be a part of their social circle.

Content: mild romance (kissing, implied forced intimacies); mild religious themes (not preachy); mild violence (shootings, death, nothing graphic). Clean!

I spent the entire read alternately wanting to hug and then throttle Meredyth Summercourt. We were both in quite a state by the end, let me tell you! Such an infuriatingly endearing heroine. She makes things so difficult for herself and consequently for Lawry. Such a swoonworthy hero. Attentive and funny -- and infinitely compassionate. Oh -- and patient. Well...for the most part. He endures a lot while Meredyth struggles with feelings of guilt and low self-esteem. Her path to redemption isn't an easy one. Great character growth -- partly due to Lawry's gentle but persistent prodding.

And, oh my goodness, clear off your fainting couch (if you're like me it's piled high with books,) You'll need it for the toe-curling kissing scenes. Even more so for the delectable almost kissing scenes! This book has an abundance of emotional highs and lows that kept my head spinning and my heart pounding for the entire duration. Awesome with sauce attached as in awesomesauce (yes, it's in the Oxford dictionary now) and aptly describes my feelings about The Bound Heart.

I read the first book in The Everstone Chronicles, The Hesitant Heiress, and liked it. I just finished the second book in the series, The Bound Heart, and loved it! I don't know how Dawn Crandall could improve from the first book but she definitely did. I got immersed in the story of Meredyth, Lawry, and Vance and couldn't put it down. Meredyth in her younger years gets compromised by Vance which leads to years of guilt she carries around with her. Lawry is her best friend but holds a secret torch for Meredyth that he keeps to himself, Lawry has a big heart that includes providing for orphans in a home in the state of Washington. Together they witness a young person being abused and bullied on the street and Lawry rescues who they first think is a boy. It turns out to be a sweet young girl named Wynn. Little do they know the connection she will have in their lives later on as they work together to help her.
I did not like Meredyth at first. She was conceited, spoiled and somewhat selfish. She looked down on the common people, the ones that did not live in her affluent side of town, and likened them to her servants at her home. When Lawry was rescuing Wynn from the street bully, she was worried about getting her dress soiled. Thankfully her character evolved throughout the story and became a very likable and loving person.
This story carried a wonderful message of forgiveness. Meredyth had to not only realize that God forgave her for her sin but that He also loved her unconditionally. I think the hardest part for her was also forgiving herself and realizing that she still deserved good things in her life and did not deserve to have continual pain and punishment throughout her life. I'm looking forward to the third book coming out in February 2015. I was fortunate enough to receive this ARC copy from the author for my honest review.

I was given an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was eagerly waiting for my advanced copy. The author, Dawn Crandall, has written a lovely sequel with a unique and captivating storyline. I read this book in ONE DAY!!! Meredyth Summercourt is torn between the man she has loved since childhood and whom she has felt bound to for years, Vance Everstone, and the man who she is currently falling in love with, Lawry Hampton. How can she choose between them? One man she knows God has bound her to and the other, in her heart, is the one God would want her to be with.
I was hooked from the first page. Without giving away the story, reading this book provokes so many emotions and you truly do not know what to expect with each turn of the pages. You simply just have to keep reading because you want to know what happens next. Dawn Crandall has such a refreshing style of writing that you feel like you really know the characters personally. I truly cannot wait to read her next book!!

This is my favorite book of the series so far. I enjoyed “The Hesitant Heiress”, but “The Bound Heart” was a very powerful story, told on a much deeper level. This story follows Meredyth Summercourt, one of the characters introduced in the previous book. Her journey to redemption was a roller coaster of emotions, both heartbreaking and gloriously happy. Let's just say that she earned her Happily Ever After. :) I was hooked from the first chapter. Highly recommended.

My impression of Meredyth when I read Crandall's first novel, The Hesitant Heiress, was of a girl who was always close friends with a gentleman but never entered into any kind of courtship. She had brothers so she could relate to men easily, and was always comfortable around them. I loved that this book explores all that's inside of Meredyth and how her actual experience with a man has shaped who she's become. We were only able to get to know the outward impression of Meredyth from others in the first novel of the series, but in this novel, we're able to see all of her struggles and the depths of her heart.

I commend Dawn Crandall for doing an excellent job of using the first person perspective in both novels in this series. It took me straight into the heart of the character, and there were times when I felt as if I were experiencing her emotions right along with her. The title for this novel is perfect, as well, for Meredyth's heart is certainly bound in more ways than one.

Meredyth has admired Vance Everstone from a distance for years, and when he seems to be returning her affections, Meredyth is caught up in the moment. When Vance takes advantage of her, Meredyth is scarred for life. But instead of being repulsed by him, she feels bound to him. She is physically and emotionally connected and can't break free. She is, however, desperate for freedom, but can't will herself to accept it from anyone, even God. At one point she thinks that freedom can only come if Vance rejects her. This roller coaster journey is at times heart wrenching. I wanted Meredyth to experience love that is honorable and true, not this false sense of love that was more like a prison.

And then there's Lawry. Oh Lawry. He is a true representation of a gentleman. He is kind and persistent, wooing Meredyth with a love that is not self-centered. Meredyth has been oppressed for so long she thinks Lawry's love is just too good for her.

The Bound Heart is not just a love story, but a story of forgiveness, unconditional love, and redemption. Meredyth's journey is a great representation of how we are before we experience freedom in Christ. We are bound by the sins we have committed, but through Christ we can experience a joyous release from all that holds us captive. I will confess, I did shed a tear or two : ).

I would definitely recommend The Bound Heart, as well as Crandall's first novel, The Hesitant Heiress.

Dawn Crandall captures us again with book two of The Everstone Chronicles. With likable strong characters and twists and turns it kept me turning the page to the very end. And a swoon worthy hero and tension, tension, tension!! Love it!!

Why I liked it:

The Bound Heart is a great book. It has a different storyline then most books...I can imagine being a writer it is both very hard and stressful to come up with something different then the hundreds of other books already written...Dawn once again pulls it off phenomenally. The words she uses are awesome for young and old alike because (and I'll use an Anne of Green Gables quote here) she doesn't use all the "highfalutin mumbo-jumbo" some historical romances use. :) It also teaches us that people aren't always as they seem...and that they can change, giving us hope and excitement for us and the characters.
What didn't I like:

Is there a bad part in the book?! What page was that? Oh yeah...I don't think there WAS a bad part. You may think that is impossible but this author has got it right...as long as she keeps writing, I'll keep reading!! The only thing that younger readers may not like is the prologue and a brief act of shooting towards the end.

4 1/2 stars out of five for teen approved because of the insinuation on what happened in the cave (very few younger readers will and should understand what is implied) and for the act of violence at the very end. One thing I will say is this: This is a FIVE star book for me... the only thing that made it 4 1/2 is for younger readers. Readers should generally be at least 14 to read this book...unless you are overly mature like I was at that age. (Not always a good thing! ;)

What about Wynn, what will happen to her? Can she finally allow God to heal her heart or will she continue to punish herself for something in her past?

This story is the second book in the series Everstone Chronicles which picks up Vance, Lawry and Meredyth's stories. It includes characters from the first book as well. There are a lot of secrets to be revealed in this story. Secrets that could have a big impact on many lives. Surprises and unexpected danger take the reader by surprise. I found parts of the story to go on and on but got better later in the story, especially toward the end. I like the way God's unconditional love and redemption is revealed, even those who feel they are unlovable.

The Bound Heart is the second book in the Everstone Chronicles. I loved the first book, The Hesitant Heiress, and wondered if this second one could possibly be as good. Well, it definitely is and I love it even more than the first!

These characters are wonderfully deep and complex and the themes of redemption, God’s cleansing grace, and forgiveness are beautifully wrapped up in a story that I did not want to set down.

Meredyth feels bound by obligation to marry a man she does not love. Having convinced herself that it is the right thing to do, she has trouble keeping her growing and changing feelings toward her best friend, Lawry, under control.

Lawry is one of the best heroes I have ever read about. I liked him right from the start, but my admiration for him grew with every chapter I read, and then grew even more toward the end of the book as I realized just what an honorable man he truly was.

These two best friends are so right for each other. You can see it all through the book. And although Meredyth is determined to wed another, for all the wrong reasons, I could understand why she had this misguided notion.

I loved the twists and turns in this story. It kept me on my toes right till the very end. I enjoyed getting to catch up with the characters that I had grown close to in the first book of the series, and also to get to know a few new ones as well. A sweet child named Wynn enabled an even closer bond to grow between Meredyth and Lawry, while a rogue named Vance sought to undermine all that was good between them. Even so, Vance was a character that I would like to see redeemed in a future story! What an interesting tale that would be.

Dawn Crandall delivers another beautifully crafted love story set in New England during the Victorian Era. The second installment of the Everstone Chronicles, we follow the lives of Meredyth Summercourt and Lawry Hampton, who we met in the first book, The Hesitant Heiress.

Meredyth Summercourt is waiting to marry Vance Everstone. And she's been waiting a long, long time. Lawry Hampton is her best friend. At least, he was ... before that kiss. And that kiss might have changed everything.

No spoilers here! But if you loved Lawry in The Hesitant Heiress, you're really going to love him in The Bound Heart. Lots of tension, some interesting plot twists, and all of it playing out in the Victorian Era of etiquette and social expectations. Dawn Crandall does a wonderful job of setting the scene and helping the modern reader understand the moral code these characters lived under.

This is one series I would highly recommend be read in order . This story definitely builds off the first story. And now I can't wait for the next book!

This is such a wonderfully written book. I was glad I started it on a day that I could keep reading and not have to put it down. There were so many lessons to be learned in this book. Meredyth is such a great character that can connect to everyone. She made one mistake and she won't stop until she has corrected her mistake. Lawry is so patient in this story. He wants to be with Meredyth but knows he has to wait until she is ready. Meredyth has to learn that she cannot correct her mistake, she needs to give it to God. This book is about grace and redemption. This may be historical fiction but the lessons are still very valid for today. I can't wait for the next book. The Hesitant Heiress and The Bound Heart are very well written. You do not need to read the first to understand the second but I would recommend reading it because it is such a great book. I can't wait for the third book in this series.

This is the second book in The Everstone Chronicles. Even if you have not read the first one (The Hesitant Heiress), you will have no problem following what happens in this one. However it will give you insight to the characters in this book, plus it is a great read too.

Meredyth Summercourt has no idea what she wants. She feels that because of past decisions her choices are limited. When deeper feelings for her very best friend, Lawry, surprise her, will she know what to do with them? For years she has felt her only salvation is in Vance. When confronted with choices will she allow herself to be forgiven? Will she follow her heart or do what she feels is best?

This book is filled with twist and turns, some very surprising. You never know what to expect till the very end. Dawn Crandall does a wonderful job keeping you interested and surprised.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes to read good christian historical romance fiction. I was given a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion.

I loved the story line of forgiveness, both how we have to forgive ourselves and accept God's. Meredyth struggles with the past and isn't able to move past the poor choices of her youth. Especially when one event (through no fault of her own) leaves her ruined. She chooses to wait for the young man to return to Boston and marry her. It's a heart breaking story to see her wait. Especially when we see Lawry who loves her and accepts her just as she is, but Meredyth is too blind by her own shortcomings to accept his love. It's a perfect example of biblical love.

I loved this book! It was written so well. The characters came alive. I can't wait for Book 3! This is an author to watch.

Another wonderful story from Dawn Crandall! Bound by past sins, Meredyth deems herself unworthy of the love of both God and a good man. In "The Bound Heart" Crandall tells the love story of God and fallen man. Christian fiction at its best contains a clear Biblical message and Dawn does not disappoint there! But due to the passionate content, younger readers should beware.
I look forward to what Mrs. Crandall has in store for us next! With two hits in a row, Dawn Crandall has proven to be an author to keep on your reading list.

I just finished The Bound Heart. I loved Lawry and Meredyth even though I wanted to strangle her sometimes! I also loved her, Wynn and Lawry together! I loved the use of Christianity throughout the book. The first night, I read to 2 am!!!! And each day since I've been reading the book or thinking about it!

Exceptional sequel!
The Bound Heart is book two in Dawn Crandall’s, The Everstone Chronicles series. I was very interested to read this book and find out what would happen with Meredyth Summerton, and I can happily say that I really enjoyed it!
Ms. Crandall does a great job of pulling you into the story and making it seem as though you are actually there. I loved the descriptions and details, which weren’t overwhelming. I had actually expected more, given the time period the book is set in, but had there been, I believe they would have become tedious or annoying. I quickly became engrossed in the book and didn’t want to put it down! It kept me up late one night, even though I tried to convince myself to put it down and get some sleep.
Meredyth is the main character in this book and I found that I really liked her. She is in the first book, The Hesitant Heiress, quite a bit, but we actually don’t know her that well. I was looking forward to becoming better acquainted with her. I loved her voice, which really matches her character. I was a little concerned that she would sound too much like Amaryllis, but she didn’t. She has her own distinct voice, setting her apart. She struggles with her past and sees herself as unworthy and forever bound to Vance Everstone, making the title quite appropriate. I thought her reactions and struggles were very realistic, which made me love her even more. She has a mask, which she tries not to let anyone behind, but she couldn’t seem to keep Lawry or the Lord out. I also really enjoyed the growth in her. She begins the book being a little spoiled and selfish, something that was unfortunately quite common of high society during the time. But as I progressed, I could see distinct changes in her thought processes and her attitude. I loved how she began to look beyond herself and question the things of society that she had always just accepted before. She really challenged me to do the same.
Lawrence “Lawry” Hampton is a great hero. He is strong, tenacious, and loving, things Meredyth desperately needed. She tried so hard to push him away, but he would never give up on her. I adored the love that is shown in this book. One of my favorite quotes is when Lawry is speaking to Meredyth and says, “It doesn’t matter what you’ve done; I still love you . . . . Because that’s what love is.” He unknowingly gave her a great example of what God’s love is like. It never fails, regardless.
I enjoyed their romance, though it actually wasn’t the focus of the story, as I had expected. It is very prominent, but more of the story seemed to be Meredyth’s journey to understanding and accepting mercy and forgiveness. There were a few somewhat “steamy” kisses and what happened with Vance and Meredyth is alluded to, but no details are given, thankfully. Vance was a bit of a creep for part of the book, so if there had been any details, I probably would have been so disgusted as to quit right there. I literally couldn’t stand him, though I didn’t truly hate him at the end.
I also loved the spirituality woven through the story. Meredyth struggles with feeling as though she is unworthy and that the Lord is punishing her for her past mistakes. I loved following her as she grew and began to understand grace and love. She is so closed off at the beginning of the story that I had to wonder what it would take to break down her walls. There was such a feeling of happiness for her, when she is finally able to release her burdens. The writing was excellent and I never felt as though something was skipped over. All of it was written with the care and seriousness it deserved.
My only complaint is that the story lagged a little, in the beginning. There were two or three chapters that felt a little unnecessary and long, but it quickly picked back up and I was engrossed again.
I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for an interesting story with a strong spiritual thread and great characters.

This series is so refreshing because it creates beautiful love stories that are also clean and focused on God. I really enjoy reading them. I also appreciate that I don’t feel uncomfortable or like I need to skip over anything. Book two surprised me because it’s a lot different than book one.

This is a beautiful love story. I knew (or at least I hoped I knew) the ending from the start, but the way it comes together is surprising and darling.

I really loved Meredith for her honesty and humanity. I felt like she was relatable because of her past. We have all made mistakes in life and many of us feel guilt because of those mistakes. I felt so sad for her early in the novel when she thought she didn’t serve happiness. But I love that Meredith can finally overcome her past and choose who will make her stronger. I think I actually liked her even more than Amaryllis from the last book. She was more realistic because she was balancing so much–family, social, and humanitarian life. And she was also balancing so many emotions–her pride, her love for Lawry, her guilt over Vance, her respect for her father, and her attachment to Wynn. I easily rooted for her and for her happiness.

And then there is Lawry. Sigh. I just want to say a few things about him. Crandall has such a gift for writing kind and loving gentlemen. Lawry is everything to Meredith–kind, forgiving, and loyal. He has loved her forever, and I love that. He is genuinely good. And he cares about and serves those around him. I wanted him and Meredith to get together from their very first kiss. No one can declare their love quite like Lawry.

Wynn was a surprising character because she so easily endearing. I just fell in love with her sweet personality and disheartening history. Through all her trials and difficulties in life, she remained so happy and excitable. I love that she is still a child and can still be happy–at least with Lawry watching over her. Also, I love the way she affects Meredith for good. Wynn brings out Meredith’s best personality traits and, in many ways, can be given credit for bringing Lawry and Meredith together so often.

The plot of the novel kept me turning pages quickly throughout and the twists were, at times, almost shocking. I felt so many different emotions while reading this book–excitement, happiness, shock, fear, disappointment, terror, and satisfaction. Yes, this is a love story, but it is also a story of Meredith’s journey to find her best self–with the many decisions and experiences she must have along the way. I appreciated that the focus was more on her journey and less on the “love triangle” between Lawry, Vance and Meredith. We get a little bit towards the end but the focus is definitely on Meredith’s journey.

A few words about the ending are worthwhile here. While I love the way it ultimately ends, I felt that wedding in Bar Harbor was a bit rushed and the crazy climax that occurs there was a bit out of place. It needed a bit more explanation. Yes, it gave Meredith the ability to follow her heart, but it was a bit over dramatic for me. And quite sad.

One of my favorite elements of the novel was the beautiful morals of forgiveness and finding the love of God in one’s life. Meredith’s ultimate spiritual revival and forgiveness of her self is a simply beautiful moment. I love that Crandall incorporates religion and God into her stories without being overwhelming or overbearing. Meredith struggles with her past sins for the majority of the novel so I loved seeing her let that burden go.

I highly recommend this second book in the Everstone Chronicles!

I began reading this second installment yesterday morning, interspersed until the wee hours. It was difficult to leave Meredyth in her quandary.

What an intriguing family the Everstones are. Some not so close, but yet when it comes down to it, they are very much aligned together. Meredyth Summercourt's family has a summer cottage on Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, Maine. Sailing from Boston every summer to cooler weather, families shared the summer months up and down the beach. Nearby, growing up, were Meredyth and her three older brothers, Lawry Hampton and his younger sister, Ainsley, and three Everstone brothers and their younger sister, Estella.

Determined to wait for one Everstone brother to return from years exploring Europe, Meredyth's story unfolds. Her heart is bound to him to right a wrong. I am waiting for her to find that is not who her alliance is to be with. Her struggles surface when she finds Lawry has interests that include her. Young Wynn Rosselet is rescued from a bully on the streets. Wynn is very vital in the story, as Meredyth begins to see what love looks like. Calling her an endearing "Mere'dy" is just the melody of her beginning to open her heart to hope.

Each chapter heading is followed by a quote that encloses the content perfectly. So rich in pursuit and received for who she is, Meredyth is lovingly drawn to forgiveness and freedom far greater than the self-loathing and unworthiness she has lived with for many years.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. Love and acceptance available to reach out and have, to be alive and live. Safety in the one who waits for her. Written in first person from Meredyth's point of view, she seeks amid struggles to find where she rightfully belongs. Well-written, with the lives of those around her, the ending offers forgiveness and release looking to the welfare of others.
