OHMYGOD??
I loved this author’s writing style instantly. The magic in this book is familiar yet also unique. If you want a sort of adult avatar the last airbender elemental read this is for you. I loved the concept of unseen elements like spirit and space. I can’t wait to see what other powers are revealed in the next book. I liked the main character and the love interests. My fav is her fiery guard/friend Marenda. I need to know more about Addy and her!! This was a really fun 350 paged fantasy book. Doesn’t get too dark but still keeps you very intrigued the entire way

GORGEOUS cover and map!

What a great debut novel! My attention was hooked from the first sentence. Book 2’s release is right around the corner (10 Jun) so now is the perfect time to binge this book. If I didn’t need to sleep, I would have read this in one sitting.

The book is adventurous and exciting and full of magic, everything that makes up a fantastic fantasy plotline. The characters and the plot drew me in. The FMC's secret mission and conflicting loyalties kept me captivated. The romance doesn’t start until around the 70% mark but it is exciting and I’m looking forward to what happens in the next book.

Crown of Blood is an elegantly crafted story that gripped me from beginning to end. And that cliffhanger! I am hooked and need book 2 ASAP.

This book will strongly appeal to fantasy lovers who enjoy elemental magic, world building, and slow burn romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5 (rounded up to 4)

𝙁𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬:
I really struggled to decide on a rating for this book. There’s quite a few things I loved and was so excited to read, including:
—Super cool elemental magic system
—Political intrigue
—Different character perspectives
—Enemies to lovers
—Secret mission to an enemy country
—Strong friendships

I also had a few things that bothered me, like:
—The writing didn’t flow. There’s some grammatical issues that distracted me from the plot, especially comma splices.
—A few of the world building things didn’t make sense to me. Some modern world items or terms were included in the fantasy world and seemed out of place (iced lattes, hydrangeas)
—The romance took a long time to get going (about 50% in). This totally makes sense as it’s part of a series, but I was hoping the tension/enemies part would start a little earlier in the story.

So, overall this was a good debut from Alley Rehfeldt and I will probably continue the series when book 2 comes out.

I love when debut books turn out to be amazing, but especially when they're fantasy. The amount of work put into this is evident from the start. The story plays out as if it was written by a well-established author, from characterisation to world building. The Elemental magic system is not something new but there are amazing new additions to it!

The writing hooked me up from the start. I need to have the second book immediately, this was not enough! I loved how the story developed, gradually letting the reader know more about the world, the powers and the characters. I loved the relationship development -- it isn't exactly enemies to lovers, more like we-don't-like-each-other to lovers, but I loved the MMC's secret protectiveness and how they slowly became closer. There's so much more that needs to be answered in the following book(s) and this one prepared the story for all of that amazingly well.

Highly recommend if you love a well structured fantasy world with a lot of political intrigue and espionage, strong characters and female friendships, dirty fights and a threat of war looming close, the 'I need to kill you but I fell for you' trope and much much more!

A huge thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book!

I was so excited to read this book and it didn't disappoint! It had every element (pun intended) of a good fantasy read, from mysterious power origins, to slow burn romance, to action and heart-racing revelations. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

I had the absolute honor of receiving an ARC of this from Alley and I truly just love YA fantasy so much. She has created a beautiful world that is so simple to keep up with and an amazing magical system based on the elements that feels so fresh. The entire storyline feels so unique and not like every other book that’s out there. It’s also so easy to pick up and follow along even if you’re not a fantasy reader!

I love our main character and the journey she goes on. I also immediately fell for the bad boy before we even knew he was the bad boy, of course. There’s some characters you love to hate and a slow burn mixed in there too.

This is the first book in a series and I already can’t wait for book 2 and to continue adventuring along with our characters.

Good but could be better

So thankfull to the author for reaching out to me and asking me to read this book. Chapters 26 to the end were great and promise a great sequel. However, the book I feel dragged on way too much on Sayr's life in the Queens palace, how she got to Creobe and what happened there. Too manu details, and I believe it shouldn't have been half a book until Sayr finally made it to creobe. But I love Sayr and Dimitri. So cute and the whole Queen and Sayr face-off at the palace was so satisfying.

Unfortunately, this book fell a little flat for me; however, I think it serves as an excellent foundation and I am intrigued to see where things go from here.

To begin, let’s discuss my positives:

1. This is a story of self discovery and acceptance. Our main character grows up in a bigoted and judgmental environment where she is constantly scrutinized and shamed. I enjoyed seeing Sayr slowly break free of her chains as she learned more about herself, magic, and the history of the continent.

2. The magic system is interesting and ever evolving. I think this makes a great foundation and am really intrigued to see how it evolves from here. There’s clearly so much left to learn. I’d like to learn more about the non elemental magic.

3. “It is a crown of blood, Everett!” well done with this line, I really enjoyed the usage of the title here.

—————————

There were also a few things that ultimately left me feeling a little underwhelmed:

1. I wish more emphasis was placed on Sayr being a Seer. Her being a Seer was the core of the plot, at least at the beginning; but, as the book went on the Seer aspect felt neglected. For example, the story begins with her explaining this reoccurring vision she keeps having, however, this vision is never mentioned again once they head to Creobe (where they spend the majority of the book).

Additionally, she doesn’t experience any visions of the future while she’s at the Western Palace. She has 2 visions while there: the first is a vision of her queen in the Western Palace looking for Sayr while the second is when she is transported and speaks with the unknown man on the throne. Both occasions were happening in real time, not the future. So is she really a Seer?

We learn a lot about the different types of elemental magic and that non elemental magic exists as well but I’d really like to learn more about our main character and her gifts. I’m hoping this is addressed more in the next book.

2. The relationship between Sayr and Dimitri fell a little flat for me. Their connection existed and there were definitely some cute moments (the dagger, how he helped her recover, the dance, etc) but at the same time I wish there was more depth to their relationship. I feel more intrigued by the unknown man on the throne (Naz?).

3. There are plenty of loose ends. I’m fully expecting the main ones to be addressed in the next book (her decision about joining the Western Court, information about her father, more information on Naz) but there are others that don’t seem to be intentional.

For example, Sayr was meant to be collecting items to frame the inner court and while it’s specified that she had collected 3 so far (chain, hair clip, and ring) this subplot was never discussed again. Was it because Sayr slowly changed her mind or was this because the author forgot about this subplot?

What about the dagger? Is it meant to be significant?

—————————

Overall, this is a good book and I will be reading the next in the series. I’d like to see more detail and am hoping we learn more about our FMC and her abilities! I also must know this Naz character.

First—an absolutely freaking huge thank you to Alley for gifting me book one and the ARC of book two! 💛 I haven’t quite settled on a rating yet… leaning somewhere between 3.5⭐️ and 4⭐️. Still thinking it over.

Did I enjoy it? Sure. Was it a favorite? Not really. But will I be reading book two? Definitely.

I really loved the magic system—elementals, hidden elementals, non-elementals, and the mysterious “special” elementals—it was super cool. The political intrigue tied to the magic and the kingdom’s history was one of my favorite parts, and I appreciated the multiple POVs, though I really wish they had been labeled by name. With more than three perspectives, it was hard to keep track of who was who sometimes. I also loved the FMC’s role—a seer in disguise sent on a secret mission in the enemy court. Add in strong female friendships, and I was totally here for that!

That said, a few things didn’t quite work for me. The FMC is this 17-year-old girl, naive and hidden from the world… but also somehow supposed to become a spy and assassin in the enemy’s court? That didn’t fully add up. And her constant back-and-forth—from not trusting the enemy court to suddenly believing everything they say and doubting her own side. The romance caught me off guard. It kicked in around 60–70% with zero buildup, and suddenly they’re a thing? It just didn’t feel earned—I honestly think it would’ve worked better if it had been left completely for book two. And honestly… I really hope Dmitry isn’t the final MMC, because I’m just not vibing with him. 😬 Also a lot of things felt very repetitive.

Still, I’m holding out hope that book two will pick up the pace, deliver more tension, and bring that gripping flow !

First I want to say happy belated pub day and I’m so sorry I missed it (released July 18th) but my mind was elsewhere after breaking my foot! So posting now, better late than never!

What I loved:
I loved this book a lot! It felt familiar but unique and I really enjoyed the magic systems and use of elements as powers in this story it brought a fresh new spin on something familiar! I also loved the characters and their development and love interest. Everything about the characters and their story I feel was perfectly built. The friendships in this are strong and I love that in a story.
The story idea itself was so good!

They’re only a few things that didn’t work or confused me.
At times the writing seemed repetitive or not to flow. BUT that’s it! I really enjoyed this and this new world Alley introduces us to! I can not wait for future books!

If you love:
✨Fantasy
✨Unique Magic Systems
✨Strong Friendships
✨Multiple perspectives
✨Secret Missions
✨Enemies to Lovers

This book is for you!

Thank you so much again @ for sending me this wonderful book! And happy belated pub day!👑

3.5 ⭐️ & 1 🌶️

This book has such an interesting concept that I can't wait to see explored in the next book(s).

Sayr is a seer, the only person with such an ability. She is oppressed under her Eastern Queen's rule and longs for the freedom that is withheld from her. When the Western king negotiates for Sayr to visit his kingdom she learns the dark past of the East and starts to unravel what she may be.

I really enjoyed the Queen's character although she is meant to be our antagonist; the author did a good job of capturing a refined type of evil befitting of a monarch. The love interest, Dimitri was compelling and I thought their slow burn connection was done well too.

The concept of Unseen and Seen elementals was well done. It was a good twist on the basic elements we have seen done so many times.

I wished the ending was more of a cliffhanger. I am curious to see how the story develops but would have liked a more intense ending as well as a bit more action throughout.

Alley Rehfeldt is an author to be looking out for in the future 😍
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learning about the world and its magic system. It’s not very action-based so if you’re looking for a more calmer fantasy, this is one you should pick up!

As Sayr, and her friend/guard, Mar, start to uncover truths of their home Court, they begin to question where their loyalties should be. The character developments throughout the story was smooth as each lie they were told begin to unfold in a new Court.

Dmitri is now added onto my list of book boyfriends 😌 He wasn’t broody but very protective of Sayr in an adorable way that I was just waiting for him to admit his feelings like BOY just kiss her already 😭

I did sometimes find the writing repetitive and wished that parts went more into detail with more in-depth explanations. Also the ending didn’t really have a cliffhanger but it did end with the reader knowing what comes next for the characters which I’m excited to see in the next book!

I enjoyed Crown of Blood and think this would be the perfect young adult book for readers looking to get into fantasy!

It was fascinating to see the different ways that the kingdoms combined elemental magic and science! It was very well-thought out, and I loved how the author described the court, the palace, and the kingdoms. Also, I loved Lanni’s character!

I would say this is less intense than other books, which is why I think it would be good for people getting into fantasy or for people who are looking for a more cozy and calm story. The interactions between the characters and the setting itself made me want to keep reading.

I think you would like this if you are looking for:
- political intrigue
- rivaling kingdoms
- elemental magic
- science
- romance
- secret agendas
- light fantasy
- council meetings

Received this book from the author for an honest review!

I really enjoyed this book and I loved the story and magic system. I thought it was different and very interesting. My main issue though was that throughout the book there was a lot of repetitive word usage in the same paragraphs. I feel like that should've been changed up. Also a few grammar things that didn't flow or make sense, which i corrected in my brain lol.

BTW, I KNEW Dema was dimitri's sister. Everett is a slimy little lying shit, almost as bad as his bitch ass murdering mother. Sayr is now officially against her queen. I loved the lake scene with the lovebirds it was so cute. And i'm glad she finally told Tri the truth about herself. The different types of unseen elementals is very intriguing... WHO IS THIS NAZ PERSON?? Does he rule Athar? I NEED to find out what happens next.

Oh. My. Gosh. 🤯

This book has it all! Lies. Betrayal. Action. Romance. Good v Evil. From the moment I picked up this book I was hooked. Not only does Alley Rehfeldt tell a compelling story about a kingdom full of Elemental warriors, she writes beautifully!

I don’t normally enjoy a book written in the 3rd person, but this works. I really felt like I with Sayr in Creobe learning about everything along side her. The way the story pulled me in was *chefs kiss* 💋

This book is slept on and needs to be hyped up for sure. I can’t wait to dive into book two.

The ONLY reason I am not giving it a full 5 stars is because it ends on a cliffhanger and that is one of my bookish pet peeves. Otherwise it is phenomenal. ❤️

𝓡𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 4/5 ⭐️

Crown of Blood by Alley Rehfeldt is a young adult fantasy romance. Sayr has unnatural abilities in a world when those posses gifts of the elements. She offers her abilities to the Queen in return for protection. She is given an impossible mission to destroy the Western Court but when things she has been told start to unravel she must choose.

This had such a fun feel! The magic system was familiar but also had added elements I had not seen before. I always love some court and political intrigue. Balancing espionage and romance. The romance in this I would say is definitely more of a sub plot.

I really enjoyed the writing in this! An easy and fun fantasy read. It was easy to grasp the world and the concepts. I had wished for just a little bit more world building because I found it to be really interesting and wanted more.

I am excited to continue though and see how Sayr figures this out!

This is a captivating fantasy book which keeps the reader wanting more. Ms Rehfeldt does a superb job with her descriptive characters and reels the reader in to both the amazing world in which they live and their elemental "gifts."

Like any good seasoned author would do she leaves the reader yearning for the next book. She has given us a very intriguing storyline but left us with questions unanswered. What is next for Sayr and her unique "gift"? What will happen to the Eastern Queen and her Court and what does Sayr's future hold in the Western world?

I will be anxious to see what comes next from this young author and look forward to a hopeful next chapter to this story.

3.5/5 stars for this YA fantasy.

I loved the elemental magic in the book and the concept of seen or unseen magic. Sayr is a seer who is trying to learn more about herself and I really enjoyed watching her delve into the unknown.

I loved King Mylan’s character and how he was a good king. You don’t see that very often! The side characters also felt vibrant and established.

I’m definitely eager to read the next one.

The only reason for docking stars is that it didn’t feel like a ton happened in the book. It’s definitely an establishing book for the rest in the series(?) but some of the content felt a little repetitive and slow moving.

Still enjoyed it though!

Sayr’s Story Casts a Spell

The story starts off a bit slow, but once it picks up, it really picks up. Sayr Rieve is a compelling heroine—strong, conflicted, and carrying a power that could reshape kingdoms. The political tension between the Eastern and Western Courts creates a gripping backdrop, and as Sayr unravels the truth behind her kingdom’s past, I found myself completely invested. The love interest adds just the right amount of emotional depth without overshadowing Sayr’s journey. With high stakes, magic, and tough choices, this book delivers a powerful punch. If you enjoy slow-burn fantasy with court intrigue and a touch of romance, this is one to add to your list.

It's just fantastic. I absolutely loved the secrecy and mystery, I loved the strong female characters, and I really enjoyed the grouchy Dimitri 😏

Alley Rehfeldt built a very detailed and intriguing world in this book! It definitely feels like the first in a series because she left me on a bit of a cliffhanger. I got a lot of information but also, what is going to happen next!!!!!

I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I am soooo bummed I'm done. I really did not want it to end!!

I had an absolute blast reading this book!

There were numerous instances where I completely lost myself within its pages. It genuinely felt like I was a part of the story, right there with the characters. The love story was absolutely wonderful, and it brought a big smile to my face as I followed their journey of getting to know each other. I was so engrossed in the book that I couldn't put it down! Without a doubt, I will definitely recommend this book to anyone!

I cannot wait for the next book!!

Thank you to Alley for sending me an ARC copy of Crown of Blood!

I really enjoyed the story and the plot, but it was a bit hard to get into at first because of the writing which is my main criticism for this book.

Its very telling not showing which was hard to read because you know that Alley put so much thought and work into the story. The sentences felt choppy and didn't flow very well.

Other then that, amazing!

Crown of Blood is the first fantasy novel that I actually finished. Sayr, the main character, is dynamic and intriguing. Many of the challenges she faces speak to the universal theme of acceptance, which she seeks both internally and externally. The author does a great job of creating imagery through sensory details. I would recommend this novel to those that are new to the genre. I can’t wait to see what Alley Rehfeldt writes next!

This book has magic, it has adventure, it has betrayal, it has slow burn, it has drama!
I’m here for it! I liked Sayr’s unique gift which made her something her Queen wanted to take advantage of. In a sense like rapunzel and mother gothel.
If you like fantasy, then you’ll like this world no doubt about it.
Reading this absorbed me into the world and finishing it has me excited for book two

The world building in this book is amazing!! It seems slow at first while you are gathering all of the information about the elements and everyone’s place within the palace but as it goes on and you start to find out more you don’t want to put it down! If you want something with a unique magic system, secrets, and self discovery I would say this is the book for you!
