Title: My Little Counting Book Author: Roger Priddy Illustrator: Genre: Non-fiction concept book Theme(s): Counting Opening line/sentence: “Let’s count…you can use your body to start counting.” Brief Book Summary: This is a non-fiction counting book that can be very beneficial for young children. The book is separated into four sections on each page and in each section there is a different number of objects. Below each box, it labels the number of objects there are. In the middle of the book, the sections aren’t label and they ask the reader to count how many of each object there is and it gets progressively more difficult as the book goes on. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Jill West- This is a colorful board book with very detailed photographs. It is a great introduction to counting and other early math skills. While reading, children and parents can touch count, identify same or different, and identify more ore less. Shapes and addition questions are also included in this book. My Little Counting Book allows children to count up to 100 and includes fun activities and colorful pictures. Nonfiction. Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Samantha C.W.- This book is so much more than a counting book. It has tons and tons of brightly colored pictures featuring all types of kid-friendly and easily recognizable objects, animals, and colors, not to mention numerals as well as many things to count. The organization of the book is very good and it flows very well. The front and back covers are very thick and the pages are cardboard so it's a great book for little ones who are learning to turn pages as well as for toddlers who tend to rip pages. My daughter and I look through this book together not only to help her learn numbers and counting, but to build her overall vocabulary. This book is really adorable, educational, and well made. Response to Two Professional Reviews: Both reviews I found for this book are extremely positive, pointing out the many strengths this book has. They both discuss the bright colors that are used throughout the book to keep children’s interest and attention. I agree with both of these reviews because not only do they focus on how the bright colors in the book are helpful to children, but both reviews also discuss how the book is much more than just a counting book. This book uses different animals and objects as examples for children to be able to recognize easily and count. The book also offers other fun activities and practice examples for children to do. Evaluation of Literary Elements: Since there is not a storyline to this book, there are not many literary elements used, but there are many images throughout the book. There are boxes on each page of the book with a certain number of an object in them. Each box is a different color, which keeps children interested in the book. The images are all very clear so young readers are able to recognize what everything is and count the objects easily. There are also activities throughout the book for children to practice their counting with. This makes the book even more appealing and interactive for young readers. Consideration of Instructional Application: This counting book is great to have in a younger elementary classroom. It can be used in the classroom to help young children learn how to count by using realistic objects that they may come across in their daily lives. If children are having trouble counting or remembering how many a certain number is, they are able to refer to this book and see an example of each number being represented by some type of object. This book is also beneficial to have in a younger elementary classroom because not only can students learn how to count by using it, but they can also practice on their own in the middle of the book when it asks the reader to count how many things are in each box. It tests students’ knowledge of counting as well as teaching them how to count, which are all ways that it can be very helpful in the classroom.
This a great book for teaching children their numbers and how to count. You follow along and count how many of each picture all the way to 20 and then the book gets more advanced. What's different between two pictures, how many items to find in picture jumbles, basic math and the last page has counting the ducks up to 100. A nice variety of different basic math skills all laid out in beautiful bright pictures to help your child along
This is a great beginning counting book for preschoolers. It has a great combination of colors, simplicity and photographs that young ones can relate to. This would be a necessity for any pre-k teacher because of the photos and the contrast of colors.
