Dark Embers

Rate this book
Arya’s first week at the Academy for the Shifted was grueling, especially after narrowly surviving the prank by the mean girls. She’s determined to stand her ground and thrive at this school, but every new step forward just makes things more and more difficult.

She still can’t shift at will. She still can’t control her water powers. And she still can’t fight worth a damn. And to make matters worse, the smoldering dragon shifter Tobias is even more hot-and-cold than before.

But Arya doesn’t know that Tobias has imprinted on her, or that his family line has been damned with a curse—if a Dracul falls in love with someone, or vice versa, that love is doomed to be forever unrequited. Tobias doesn’t want that fate for either of them, but the imprint bond makes it impossible for him to resist her. He’s determined to find a way to break the bond, for both their sakes.

When a vampire attack on a student turns suspicion on Arya, all hell breaks loose, and a secret about Arya’s lineage comes to the surface in disastrous fashion when someone close to her commits the ultimate betrayal. How is Arya going to survive this latest blow?

Betrayed!

The first book was pretty good, being introduced into the shifter world and of course with a mean girl twist to it and an impending battle with vampires. While the first book dealt with shifter new to her powers Arya dealing with a sudden loss and discovering that actually a mermaid- this book takes it to the next step further going into the battle between shifters and vampires. Yes mean girls are still there and a love triangle pops up, but this book you really feel for Arya because she just gets betrayed from all sides. Some just for her protection, cowardness, and then a shocker. I usually hate cliffhangers, but gives so much that I’m ok with it, need to prepare for 3rd book!

Book 2 in this series has kept me wanting to turn the page. I was already intrigued with book 1 and book two has added more twists and turns, revealed some secrets, added more tension and more romance!! I am impatiently waiting book 3 to find out what happens with our MMC and FMC as well as the storyline with her best friend and her love interests! This book had twists I was NOT expecting and I am here for it!

Dark Embers

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I love that in “Dark Embers” Book 2 of Dark Shifter Academy by Tricia Barr we pick up where we left off. Arya still can’t shift at will, she can’t control her powers over water, she still can’t fight, her bullies are still targeting her, and to make matters worse Tobias is even more hot-and-cold than before. Arya is ready to give up she just can’t catch a break especially since a vampire attack on a student turns suspicion on her. Plus a secret about Arya’s lineage comes to the surface causing all hell to break loose even more. Arya is devastated when she finds out that someone close to her committed this ultimate betrayal this time around. How many more blows can Arya survive before she breaks and just gives up like those who are targeting her wants? Can Arya find the will to overcome all of these challenges and become a force more powerful than anyone knows? Well I guess that you would have to read “Dark Embers” to find out what happens wouldn’t you.

I love the uniqueness of the storyline. The POVs of more than just two MCs. And in my opinion it has two cliffhangers. One with Arya and the other with Julian.
Arya has to be strong. Not only does she have to deal with the death of her mother, she has to deal with the Queen Bee Cora and her "thugs". Celeste has made it impossible for her to gain any ground by what she did. Plus Tobias and his hot and cold. Caesar learns of the secrets she didn't even know about.
I love her two best friends Shea, and Ashlyn. It was fun reading how they helped in their own special ways.
Julian has his own problems to deal with. Hopefully the vampire leader doesn't catch wind of his mission.
Suspense and twists throughout. Each POV progressed the story. Well organized writing.
I can't wait for the next book .

So many secrets revealed

This book picks up right where book one ended. Arya is still attempting to master her mermaid form and her water manipulation.

She is forced to keep analyzing her feelings for both Tobias and Kendal. She also continues being the met outcast.

We also have Shea who is dealing with her own feelings for Caesar as well as for Julian. With the Grimoire will she be able to access more of her magic?

Seriously read this book. Oh and you get to learn who Arya's father is. You find out so many important details in this book. I absolutely can't wait to get the next book because so much is being planned that I need to know what's going to happen.

Also I really hope we find out more about Tobias and his curse. I wonder if Shea will be able to fix it....

What a ride this took me on! I enjoyed the first novel, so I had high expectations for the second and it did not disappoint! We have Arya’s story to follow, with more hits coming her way and Tobias’ imprinting, but also Julian. It’s just so much twisting and turning and I don’t want to give anything away! You just have to read it for yourself.
Tricia has done an excellent job weaving a story and I can’t wait for the next installment in the series!!.

Love’s curse…

Arya still can't shift and the SIM prank would have killed her except for Tobias' intervention. He blows hot and cold toward her. Arya never knows what he really feels. She needs to stop wasting time on him and concentrate on her fighting skills and learning how to shift. Tobias can't stop thinking about Arya but his family curse keeps him from going further regardless of his father’s orders.

So much magic! Surprising twists! I like where this series is going! I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary. I can't wait to read the next book.

'He was either going to be the warmth that sustained me or the funeral pyre that destroyed me.'

Dark Embers is a great sequel in the Dark Shifter Academy series. It gives you everything that you want from a series. Each character has their own distinct personality and life problems that reels you in and makes you sympathize with them. There's enough action in this book that it makes it hard to put down. I devoured this book in a day and I can't wait to read book 3! I'll definitely be buying physical copies of this series so that I can display them on my shelves.

I can’t believe Kendall!!! I was on his side until the end of this book! What a shame and a coward tsk tsk. This book was so good, I love that we got to know Shea more and finding her grimoire.

This book had a lot more spice and I’m here for it 🤭 Arya is having her cake and eating it too ❤️ this series is definitely going to be a god tier for sure!

10 out of 10 would recommend.

This was another great book to this series. It is told in multi-POV as we follow 4 characters pov. There is a lot that happens in this book with some hard hitting plot twists. There is also a significant cliff hanger to this book as well. I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

Arya and the rest are back for more fun and games. Things heat up between people and between the budding war with the vampires and everyone else. Secrets are revealed and trouble abounds. And the ending made me scream and need the next one. Good story, fun characters, wild times and lots of laughs between the danger.

Entertaining story with some fun mystery. Can’t stand anything to do with the whole mean girls scenario. Also, can these characters just communicate please!? I personally don’t love more than 2 POVs, but the story is still a fun one. Enjoy the shifters and vamps; good danger and action. Looking forward to the next one!!

Pulled me in again!

Just like the first book, the 2nd book hooked me in, and I kept craving to find out what happened. When you read this book, be prepared to root the accomplishments of the characters and boo when some trip in epic " are you kidding me" moments. Highly recommend!

Storyline is good, but some inconsistencies and word use errors

Storyline was fine except for a few errors about who is what. Author needs to learn the actual use of certain words, as they were misused. Example: using saccharine in place of sweet, not realizing the fake or artificial nature of that word’s meaning. There were a few words like that in the text.

Holy cow, another insane book, and just what was that ending?! The twists and turns made me feel like I was on a rollercoaster (an emotional one) and I just need to know how things will proceed now! I seriously liked that we got to see Ashlyn’s POV in this book and I hope to see more of her! And I am intrigued to see what will come of Shea’s storyline.
