This series is insane my mind is blown! It was so good to be back in Deverre with Peter and Spencer and the gang. I can’t say much I don’t want to spoil anything but My goodness I cannot recommend this series enough. Each book dives you deeper and deeper into the archives of the warden. I have been reading this series since the beginning hello Lake of Glass and dare I say Victoria is much like Lewis, Tolkien, Gabaldon, Winston Graham and what I mean by that is she has created a world and characters that completely pull you in and immerse you into another world. It’s all so interconnected and dee each book unfolds more lore mystery and light in the darkness. If you are a fan of vampire diaries and supernatural definitely pick up these books!

Ahh, back in DeVerre! It was hard to leave Cait & Desmond (main characters of Book 3), but I was also eager to see how the major cliffhanger of Book 2 resolved in Peter & Spencer’s neck of the woods! With longer series’, I get nervous that the characters’ tones, plot consistency, and story excitement will wane. After reading this fourth installment of the Archives of the Warden, I am pleased to say that the world Dixon has created is so rich and complex that each book continues to be a page-turner with so many ways for it to go after this!

I am so consistently refreshed by the authenticity infused into these characters- their motives, their nervous tics, their habits, their conversations… I am so excited that the plot is carried forward by healthy relationships, helpful conversations, and smart characters. I'm over the miscommunication trope and characters going on for too long without suspecting clearly suspicious characters or things. Dixon doesn’t drag out problems or mysteries unnecessarily. They find solutions, they move forward, more problems arise organically, they solve those… It’s so natural. It’s so, so good.

I found myself being relieved when dots started connecting, growing curious at how further problems would be untangled, feeling saddened by betrayal, and then cheering at redemption. The spiritual tones of the book are tastefully done, as they are obviously fictitious and not sacrilegious.

If you love a rich, complex story (full of mystery, family, a quest for Truth, and a little romance) that's beautifully written and leaves you inspired- you'll want to read this book!

Please note: This eARC was given to me but the review is honest and entirely my own opinion.

Quotes
“There was an odd blend of curiosity and humor in her grin. ‘You having a panic attack? Or you kissing me because of it?’ . . . ‘Well how about this,’ she said. ‘If you have another panic attack, I give you permission to kiss me if it’ll stop it. And in the meantime, I’ll consider myself one lucky girl.”

“Whatever this beast was, it didn’t mind watching, waiting. It was patient. And it was adamant in its study of him. Letting out a long breath, Peter held the thing’s gaze. ‘You come here often?’ The thing blinked again. ‘Yeah, me neither.’ . . . ‘I’d give it a one-star rating, 'Peter said to the beast. ‘Could’ve at least provided a toothbrush.”

Review
I cannot express how long I waited for this conclusion. Book two’s cliffhanger was WILD.And with book three following a set of different characters, I felt like I would never get to know what happened. Dixon did not disappoint.

First of all, let’s give another round of applause for Dixon’s banter. She is the queen of banter and I will never change my stance on that. Her relationship building is impeccable. It’s also been so fun to see her grow as an author throughout this series. Her pacing and character development has only gotten better–it’s like you’re growing with the characters.

I loved seeing Spenser and Cassandra’s relationship develop in this book. Their slow burn over the past two DeVerre books was almost suffocating–and I love a good slow burn. But Dixon’s depiction of anxiety and relationship mending in Spender’s life was so good. He’s like a squishy, loveable, could totally kill you, goofball. And the protection Cassaandra and Spencer show for each other is so sweet.

Now . . . my boy Peter. Poor Petey had it rough in this book, in so many more ways than one. But seeing his story develop, separate from Spencer, was fascinating. I truly appreciate him holding his own and standing up for what he knew was right, even when it caused him so much pain.

Now, with all of this said, the cliffhanger at the end of book four isn’t much better. I can’t wait to continue reading this series!

Although I’m sharing this review after its Pub Day, I received an early copy. Even still, this review is completely and entirely my own opinion.

THE PLOT THICKENS!!

I love how Dixon's books feel like one continuous story. This one picks up right where book #2 left off (although the world building you get in book #3 is helpful and even essential to have going into this one). Veil of Mist feels like a turning point in the series; it is to AOTW (DeVerre) what The Prisoner of Azkaban is to Harry Potter. VOM reveals more information about how the (fictional) spirit realm works, all while keeping you in suspense! The Peter Collins banter did *not* disappoint, and I've come to expect nothing less from V.K. Dixon! This book had me chuckling at the banter, cheering on the slow-burn romance, and, at moments, had my jaw dropping at plot twists and world building! I'm only sad because I have to wait for book #5 to be released!!

This series just keeps getting better. I love how detailed, how intense, how relatable these characters are. Their arcs have been so good and knowing there's so much more to come?!? Can't wait.

I love that this one picked up right after book 2 and all the reveals that happened! Things have gotten real, y'all! Especially with that ending! I need more people to read these books so we can chat about theories and ships!!

Thank you to the author for letting me read this. Sorry my review took forever. All opinions expressed are my own.

WHAT?!?!?!

Felling a major book hangover after this one. And I’m so sad I have to wait for the next book!

Seriously, though, this series just get better and better and I am absolutely loving the depth and complexity of the spirit world and how it is uncovered just a little bit more each book.

Prepare yourself for all the feels and heartbreak…

Great installment of the story. It answers some questions I had from book #3 (like what a Vessel was). There was also a twist near the end that I was really not anticipating! The only thing I had a hard time with was that this was only one week after the second book! LOTS happens in a short period. Thanks to the author for a digital ARC in exchange for a review.

I'm obsessed with this entire series, and this book far exceeded my expectations! This may be my favorite of the entire series so far (but I keep saying that about each book as it releases, so ...). Fair warning: You'll open this book and stay up the entire night to read it. These characters will find a permanent home in your heart and head! 5 ⭐

Oh man, the way this series has gripped me! I was so glad to be back in DeVerre. Though this is the fourth book in the series, you can read it directly after book two, as book three (The Raven's Cry) is set in a different town with new characters.

If you like strong sibling bonds, found family, supernatural elements, witty banter, and slow-burn romance, then why haven't you started this series yet?!

This book is so much more than the romance subplot, but you better believe I was highlighting all the romantic bits. And we get some slow-burn payoff in this book! Hooray!! It is such a sweet relationship that develops between two of the main characters.

The mystery in this story is fantastic. I loved reading about all the twists and reveals and how the characters worked things out. Victoria's storytelling is just masterful. Her characters are deep, rich, and relatable. I loved the thread of redemption in this one, was heartbroken by the betrayal, and shocked by the ending.

I love it when a book raises questions about the lore and worldbuilding, and my mind starts ticking over how things work and are connected. That's how I know I'm invested, and I've sent a whole bunch of questions Victoria's way! I beta read this book last year, and I think it was my first beta read. (Thanks for taking a chance on me, Victoria!) I loved reading the ARC and seeing how the story is even stronger. I will continue supporting and hyping this series because it is so, so good. I can't wait to see where Victoria goes with it and how it all wraps up together. Strap in; it's a 12-book ride.

Tropes etc:
*found family
*slow-burn romance
*strong sibling bonds
*town secrets and corruption
*exposing truth
*supernatural creatures
*betrayal
*multiple 3rd person POV

Content warning: ghosts, betrayal, death, gun use
Intimacy rating: 1 (kisses only)
