LEAD
This is a newspaper article, so the lead is a little different than that of a story book or a poem. The lead gets straight to the point.
“WASHINGTON — The first turn to the west that diverted the missing Malaysia Airlines plane from its planned flight path from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was carried out through a computer system that was most likely programmed by someone in the plane’s cockpit who was knowledgeable about airplane systems, according to senior American officials.”
As soon as you read the lead, you know that this article is about what happened to the Malaysian Airlines plane that went missing and that they are suspecting foul play. The article adds onto that lead as you keep reading; it goes on to say that foul play is suspected and that they do not know who may have altered the planes path, but they will continue to search until they figure out what has happened.
I think, for an article, that the author used the lead well. The lead was there to inform you of the mass of the article and immediately after reading the lead, I knew exactly what to expect out of the article.
I would not use this as a teaching tool for leads, as this kind of lead is not one I would want to start students out with. This kind of lead is specific to articles and if it were used to start a story, no one would read it. I do think that this could be used if students were writing a newspaper article; it could provide them with a good example of a well written article for students.
