BIG CITY CRIME. SMALL TOWN HEROES

An epic finale.
Detective Samantha Jesse is determined to hold on to what she has. Whenever she gets too happy, life corrects that mistake and takes the joy from her. Her new partner, Detective Romeo Alvarez, was there the day of the biggest correction, but despite his assertions, that doesn’t mean they’re forever connected. Unless her worst fears come true and he changes his ways because he fell in love at first sight with her sister, Bristol. As if Samantha needs that complication in her quiet life.

A love rekindled.
Fire Department Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez has never let go of the love of his life. Raised by deaf parents, he sees the world in ways no one else around him ever will. And he’ll put it all on the line to protect his colleagues—the family that the department has given him. When a spate of suspicious fires and one death make it clear something is happening in Benson, Julio lands on an inter-department task force. Working with Samantha is his one shot at getting her back.

As the hunt for the arsonist turns to targeted attacks, Julio puts it all on the line to save Samantha while she investigates these deadly crimes. Only together can they uncover the culprit.
But not before Benson becomes an inferno.

Each Benson First Responders book is a stand-alone Christian Romantic Suspense.

A powerful faith thread woven into an intricate, suspenseful mystery . . .

Police Detective Samantha Jesse and Fire Department Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez have known each other since their middle school days. The pair was inseparable until a life-altering tragedy struck them unexpectedly two years ago.

Now they are assigned to work together professionally on an arson investigation case involving a serial arsonist in their hometown of Benson. Awkward? Definitely. Emotional? Sure. But these two are experienced, skilled professionals in their respective field; and they forge through danger and physical injuries as a team to solve this intense case.

I always enjoy the inclusion of diverse characters in the books I read, and this author has done a fine job of including ethnically diverse and characters with disabilities in her story.

The suspense scenes are well-paced and gripping. There are several villains—or possible villains—who will challenge fans of this genre to try to figure out 'who done it' before the story ends.

This story is completely clean in language and content. I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

I loved this story! This was my first time reading a book by Lisa, but now I think I need to read a lot more of hers.

Captain Julio and Detective Samantha have history together. They've always been each other's person... from middle, high, and even bouncing back to each other after college. Life came and went, and they always ended up together. But then tragedy happened 2 years ago that split them up and they haven't been together since. That is until Samantha is called to a fire, and Julio is trapped inside. He makes the first move, reminding her where his heart stands and where it's always been. But she's cautious. Every time she's had something good in her life, it was ripped away. She can't stand that heartbreak a second time. And now there is no time for all the feelings... while they work an arson case together. They don't need any more deaths, especially since it seems they are the arsonists' next targets! Can they save Benson? Can they renew what they once had? Can they learn to trust God again amidst all the sorrow that filled their pasts?!

You all, the chemistry between Julio and Samantha, is off the charts. And if you like a man that will speak his mind and SHOW his feelings, Julio is that guy. He is so protective and yet so sweet, kind, and patient when it comes to Samantha. Gosh, if anyone deserved a happily ever after, it's them! You all get this book! Yes, it's part of a series, but it can stand alone. I have only read this one, and it was wonderful!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required, and this review reflects my own opinion.

This story had me on the edge of my seat, trying to guess who was behind all of the mayhem! It was obvious from the peeks in to the villain’s mind that they were seriously delusional, however, they seemed to be a step ahead every time.

I really liked Samantha and Julio. They fell for each other in middle school and eventually began dating years ago. However, they had a tragic backstory involving a breakup two years earlier that they had to face and get past in order to reignite their love story. I absolutely loved the way these two reconnected and that they truly cared for each other for all of these years.

This was a fast paced story and the author really did keep me guessing! There was also a good faith thread. I loved the way the story was tied up at the end, yet I admit that I would have really liked an epilogue to see how these two were faring maybe a year in the future. I just was so invested in their relationship, I wanted more! I had not read any of the earlier titles and was easily able to enjoy this book. I highly recommend!

Author Lisa Phillips is breaking my heart…but only because this is the last book of her incredible Benson First Responders series! And this story is FIRE (pun intended). An arsonist is wreaking havoc all over Benson.
Detective Samantha Jesse finds herself part of a task force with her ex-love, Fire Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez. Oh, these two! I love a second chance romance, and the author set this reader’s heart aflame (pun intended again) with this story. Add in nail biting action, and a chance to reconnect with characters from the previous books, this book is a sizzling (yep, third time’s a charm) finale to an amazing series. Plus it has my favorite, an epilogue!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

This is the first book in the Benson First Responder series that I've read and didn't have any problem getting to know the characters. They were professionals with a strong will, committed to their jobs, and hoping for a second chance at a relationship. Julio and Samantha's jobs take them on a search for an arsonist.

The story is full of twists, non-stop action, and a sweet romance. Samantha finds her faith stretched and her ties to family strengthened. A very intense on the edge of your seat read that wrapped up everything nicely at the end. You won't be able to put it down until you've turned the last page so make plenty of time.

I received a complimentary ARC from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Since loss and a big fight led to breaking up with her boyfriend, Samantha has kept to herself, focusing on her work and avoiding deeper connections. But now, work and the past collide when she ends up working with Julio on an interdepartmental task force to catch a serial arsonist. And Julio clearly wants her back. Can they overcome what separated them in the past to forge a new future together? And, more urgently, as the arsonist sets his sights on them both, can they discover who he is before it's too late?

An enjoyable read with plenty of action, a second chance at love, and a mysterious crook to catch. I did start to guess who the arsonist was, but it was well done in providing both hints and misdirection. At the same time, I never really understood why he acted as he was - but maybe sanity can never really understand insanity. Samantha and Julio have a lot between them, and I loved watching them gradually come to terms with the past and what separated them, not to mention what they can do to make things work in future. The result is a good read, though I did subtract a star because it felt a little clunky at times. Nevertheless, well worth a read and can be read as a standalone story.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Inferno Benson First Responders #9 was not the first book I have read written by Lisa Phillips and will not be the last. This year was the first time I have read her works, and I have completely fallen in love with her books. I love the overlapping characters between series, but also appreciate that the books can be read as a stand-alone, for those of us who like to series hop. Inferno was very intense. It kept me on my toes.

The character development was good. Though lacking in a few areas. There were a few characters that I wish I knew a little bit more about. Though I did enjoy getting to know Samantha and Juilo and watch their relationship rekindle.

The storyline was good. Though sometimes a little intense. I really had to hold on for the ride and pay attention to the story line at certain parts.

The relationship that rekindled between Samantha and Julio was sweet. I liked that they were trying to rebuild it in a God honoring way, even though that was not the case the first go around.

Lisa Phillips did a good job of intertwining faith throughout the book. I appreciated the message behind this book. Trusting in God, even when it feels like He is not there, or maybe in the past He didn’t feel close. It was a good reminder.

Inferno is a high octane, action-packed, second chance suspense novel. Lisa ended the series with a bang, and Samantha and Julio were the perfect couple to complete the Benson First Responders series.

When an Arsonist starts mirroring fires sent twenty years ago, Samantha and Julio are thrown together again. Along the way, we see lots of old friends, some new faces, and an epic mystery. A few of the characters in Inferno have a hearing impairment, and I loved the way Lisa added deaf culture to this book. As someone who used to be okay-ish in sign language, this was an awesome addition.

I really enjoyed Inferno, and I can't wait to see what happens next in Benson. Or at Vanguard.

I received an ARC from the author, but this doesn't impact my thoughts or opinions on this book. I previously bought the earlier books in the series as they released.

Wow! Just, wow!

I always try to write my reviews as soon as I've finished a book so I can get my thoughts down while they are fresh in my mind. Well, I just finished reading Inferno and I'm still reeling from all the action that took place, especially in the last few chapters!

I even stayed up past my bedtime to finish reading and find out for certain who the arsonist was. I had my suspicions towards the end after a few clues were hinted at but I had to have them confirmed before I stopped reading for the night.

The characters were well-written and very relatable. Julio and Samantha had a history which the author explained wonderfully and had me routing for them from beginning to end. Even the secondary characters were fun! I do hope to revisit Bristol and Romeo at some point in the future.

This is the 9th book in the Benson First Responders series. There were mentions of characters from previous books but this was a very good stand-alone read. I do want to go read more of this series now, though!

Inferno by Lisa Phillips is the 9th book in the Benson First Responders series. You can totally read it as a stand-alone book; however, there are characters and plotlines that are from previous books. I’ve not read any of the others, and I still enjoyed this on its own!

I love reading books and watching shows centered around first responders because of the level of suspense. And I like seeing the bad guys get what’s coming to them! Inferno centers around Detective Samantha Jesse and Fire Department Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez. They have a past but have not been in contact in almost two years. When fires start breaking out all over the city of Benson, they, along with others, are assigned to a joint task force to stop the arsonist.

Inferno was a real page-turner! I liked the connection to a past serial arsonist and the current one who has a much larger goal in mind. Following along as Samantha and Julio chased clues was very exciting. The danger and suspense felt so real! I could feel their frustration as the fires began escalating. It was also enjoyable watching the two reconnect in a romantic way. They never stopped loving each other, but past events kept them from trying to salvage their relationship. The past events led them both to abandon their faith though Julio was beginning to draw closer to God. Samantha struggles throughout the novel questioning why God allows bad things to happen. I think that’s something we all struggle with at times. She finally realizes that God answers prayers in unexpected ways, and He’s in control. Another romance blossoms during Inferno too - one between Samantha’s partner Romeo and her deaf sister Bristol. They’re pretty adorable together!

I highly recommend Inferno to those of you who love Christian romantic suspense! It’s got a case that will keep you at the edge of your seat, romance, and Christian themes throughout.

This book is both awesome and not-so-awesome. The not-so-awesomeness is because this is the end of the series. I was excited to read it, but ugh....it is the last book in the series.

Phillips has become one of my favorite authors, and this is my favorite of her many series she has written. My favorite book of the series is definitely #8 Duplicity. If you have not read the series, then you haven't met the twins - Simon and Peter. Yeah, I was amused also. They were in the whole series, and Peter got his own story last summer in an anthology of 4 stories by Phillips and three other authors. Twin #2, Simon, finally got his story in the 8th book in this series.

But this book...it was an awesome conclusion to this very awesome series. (Where do authors get such terrific - and so many - ideas for books?

The suspense in this one was non stop, as were the fires being set all over the city of Benson. Towards the end of the book, I was wondering if there was going to be anything left.

I loved the romance part of the book. In this one, the couple had been together since kids, then broke up two years ago. And they had been majorly together, if you get the drift...
I have gotten to the point in my lifelong bachelorhood that I can enjoy romance in a book, and all kinds. I like the kind where boy meets girl and things develop. Preferably while a killer chases one or both. Kind of kidding...but I think I prefer this kind. The kind where the couple was previously dating or married, and they get back together. Preferably while running from a killer. 😀

But seriously, this was an awesome read. I loved the characters, and how everything played out.

The books can be read as standalones, but I highly recommend reading them in order so you know who everyone is and how they relate to each other.

As I read Inferno, I realized that Author Lisa Phillips had done it again!! From the first page, I had a truly difficult time putting the book down. The main characters intrigued me from the very beginning, the fact they had a past together made it even more possible to stay engaged throughout the twists and turns. The danger in this story was ever present – from the first paragraph: emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Fire Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez was molded from the typical cast of a traditional fireman. He was strong, true to his word, and fighting a battle internally to find his way back to his Savior. Samantha Jesse was a one-woman army fighting back the crippling pain of the past, as well as the battle of fighting for justice on the streets. She was proving to herself, as well as the community around her, that she would triumph over adversity. When adversity and crime through fire blended, through a struggle of necessity, Samantha and Julio must find a way to work together.
Phillips’ masterfully crafted the past into the present – a future where loss became hope. Time and again, throughout this book, I found the message of the Gospel enriching lives: past, present, and future. I found Julio’s and Samantha’s determination to survive with an all-encompassing truth in their hearts amazing. I loved this book and all the passion of life that it emphasized. As an early reader, I was asked to read this book for my honest opinion and thoughts. I rate Inferno 5 out of 5 stars for its depth, danger, faith and everlasting hope.

Christian Romantic Suspense novels have come to be a favorite genre of mine. Inferno by Lisa Phillips is the latest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 9 and the final book in the Benson First Responders Series. I am very glad that each book in this series is a Stand Alone novel, as I have not read any of the other books in this series yet.

WOW, I immediately jumped into the storyline and could not stop reading until I finished the book. The main characters of this book are Detective Samantha Jesse and Fire Department Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez. Samantha and Julio were childhood friends and were engaged but broke up sometime ago. They are reunited when they are both assigned to investigate the rise in Arson cases in Benson. The Arson fires have become deadly so city officials are working together to solve the Mystery of who is starting these fires. Julio sees this as an opportunity to protect Samantha and possibly win her back. They are working the case together as the town of Benson becomes a firing Inferno! Danger lurks but they are both determined to stay safe! I really LOVE how the reconnection between the pair is almost instant. The book is definitely a page turner and had me trying to think ahead for the "whodunit". I also LOVE the Faith Message in this book! The book is one of Faith, Second Chance Romance and Suspense! I was so amazed at how the book started with suspense and intrigue, that I was disappointed that I started with Book 9. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Romance Suspense! WONDERFUL BOOK!

Inferno is the wonderful last book in a fun and fast-reading series. It’s amazing and I totally binge-read the entire thing. You are going to want to grab your copy today. If you have not read the rest of the series you need to do that first. Each book builds on the past one so that the entire series really does need to be read. Book one introduces you to the characters. Then each one on from there gives you more on the story. More on the characters.

This book focuses on Samantha and Julio. Julio is a unique character as he is the child of deaf parents. His life is different than everyone else and he definitely sees things through a different lense. He’s also in love with Samantha and has been for a while. Now he’s working with her trying to figure what’s going on in Benson.

Can he convince her of his love? Will he lose his heart? And can they find out what’s going on and solve the case? Without losing their hearts or their lives?

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. Wow, this was a heart tugging, on the edge of your seat, emotional read. First off, you have a serial arsonist who enjoys upping his game and burning down buildings. Not only that, but he likes to have casualties as well. He was a very sick and dangerous person and time is running out for this special team to find him before anyone else gets killed. However, their lives are now in danger as well.

So, some parts of this book are full of danger and suspense, and the others emotional heartbreak, healing, and forgiveness. When I first started this story, I was not aware of any of that was in here. Detective Samantha Jesse and Fire Department Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez have quite a history together. Having known each other as kids, and then romantically later. Their breakup, as it is revealed was truly sad. Now they are working together, after two years apart, to stop this evil. Their story was powerful to me as they both sought forgiveness and reconciliation with the One who heals all hearts. This was suspenseful and an uplifting read. I am going to check out the rest of the series.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Once upon a time, there were...Samantha and Julio. Then life and tragedy intervened. After years apart, suddenly they're face to face again; searching for a serial arsonist who's bent on destruction and death. And there are more questions than answers before them. One suspect is in prison. Another has fingered Samantha for the bad guy in their interaction. One thing is for sure; the longer they look and don't find the perp, the worse things are going to be.

So they don't know who the arsonist is. What they DO know is that every bit of love, longing, and the fact that they are just right for each other is just as strong as it ever was in their past. What's different this time is the faith they share. Sure, that faith is struggling in one of them and has a jaundiced view in the other. But it is there. And that should make things a little different.

The arsonist is practiced, a planner, and obsessive. That will definitely make Julio's and Samantha's job harder. But if they can survive his attacks and capture him...might a happily-ever-after be in their future? The reader can only hope!!

Another 5-star read from Lisa Phillips.

Samantha Jesse and Julio Espinoza-Vasquez who were once engaged are reunited when an arsonist increases his activities and endangers more and more people of Benson, leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. The author leaves you enough breadcrumbs to lead you to several suspects, but you may be surprised who is the arsonist. You’ll have to read it to see if you can figure out the culprit before Sam and Julio.

Things to enjoy:
Danger
Second chances
Forgiveness
Fire rescue squad
Plot twists
ASL
Kisses only

While this is the last book in the Benson First Responders series, it can certainly be read as a standalone. I not only enjoyed Detective Sam and Cap. Julio, but also their reconciliation and recommitment to their relationship and God. I really liked the secondary characters from Samantha’s sister Bristol, to the police force, to the men and women who are a part of the first responders team.

I’m sad to see this series end but wow it was truly amazing! These books can be read as stand alone stories, but of course I recommend reading them in order for better character development and relationships.

In this story, Detective Samantha and Fire Captain Julio find themselves fighting on the same task force to stop the arsonist who is intent on making Benson City an Inferno at all costs! Samantha and Julio had dated each other previously so I loved the element of a second chances romance with them.

This story has it all! Heat, clean romance, suspense, danger, twists, suspense and more! You don’t want to miss out! Once you start reading, you won’t want to stop.

This is the final book in the series. The author seems to overlap characters from other series. And she brings back characters from previous books. This one was definitely less angsty than the previous books. It's very much about second chances and trusting God to not only guide and protect, but also to love and comfort. I appreciate the fact that the two main characters are overcoming sexual sin. You don't see that too often in Christian fiction, but it's so pertinent to the current times. The ending was very exciting and dramatic. The story was well-resolved. Possibly my favorite in the series.

Inferno

Marvelous story of second chances with danger, action and mystery. There is an arsonist on the loose in Benson. Captain Julio Espinoza-Vasquez is trying to stop him or her before more people die. When Detective Samantha Jesse shows up to one of the fires, she doesn’t realize she is setting herself in the crosshairs of the arsonist. She and the Captain have a past relationship they have both tried to put behind them. Neither have been successful at moving on so it makes the reunion much more difficult. Will they be able to stop the arsonist before he stops them?

Inferno was a fast-paced, action-packed read. The storyline drew me straight in front of the beginning, I enjoyed Julio and Samantha's history, their struggles, and Samantha being stretched in her faith and coming to understand that God was real. The plot was engaging and had twists and turns, the story involved second chances, I had a sneaking suspicion of who the arsonist was, and I loved the epilogue.
