Someone is trying to kidnap the leader of the Were world, Sebastian Arnou, and it’s not hard to figure out who. The powerful Clan Rand just lost their chieftain, who challenged for the top spot and lost—both the fight and his life. Now his clan is out for revenge and has split the Were community in two.
To make matters worse, Rand has allied with the dangerous mages of the Black Circle, who have already plunged the magical world into war. One of the organization’s leaders has taken an interest in Lia de Croissets, a newly turned werewolf. As a member of the War Mage Corps, the police branch of the world’s leading magical organization, the Silver Circle, she stands against the dark, but the mage’s interest appears to be more personal.
In fact, the kidnapping attempt on Sebastian and later moves against Lia’s new little clan all appear to be geared toward getting something from her. But she has no idea what the mage wants, or why she and her clan of former outlaw wolves should be of such interest to the dark. And once she finds out, the answer could change not only Lia’s own life, but the course of the entire war.
Karen Chance is the author of two New York Times bestselling series, plus a number of novellas and short stories, all set in the Cassandra Palmer universe. A full-time writer since 2008, she was previously a university history teacher, which comes in handy when writing the time-travel aspect of Cassie’s crazy adventures. She loves Las Vegas, the main setting for her novels, but currently lives in Florida near her family home. Visit her website or connect with her on Facebook here.
Weird Magic by Karen Chance is an absolute blast, the kind of story that ignites on page one and only burns hotter as it goes. The pacing feels like an explosion that keeps expanding, gaining momentum with every chapter. The plot runs at full speed, yet it never stumbles, never loses clarity, and never sacrifices character for chaos. It is controlled mayhem in the best possible way.
Chance’s signature worldbuilding shines here. The magic is vivid, unpredictable, and wonderfully strange, and the action scenes crackle with energy. Every twist lands cleanly, every confrontation feels alive, and the entire book has that exhilarating sense of motion that makes it impossible to put down.
One of the most delightful surprises is the appearance of characters from Chance’s other series. Their pop-up moments feel like Easter eggs for longtime readers, weaving the connected worlds together with charm and purpose. Instead of feeling like cameos for the sake of nostalgia, they enrich the story and expand the sense of a shared universe that is bigger, wilder, and more interconnected than ever.
The characters at the center of this book are fierce, funny, and instantly engaging. Their chemistry and grit ground the nonstop action, giving the story emotional weight amid the whirlwind of magic and danger.
For readers who crave speed, spectacle, and a universe that keeps revealing new layers, Weird Magic is a knockout. It is bold, relentless, and wildly entertaining, and it earns every one of its five stars
3.5 I never imagined Lia de Croissets would become a series. Book two was published four years after the first one, seemingly without anyone expecting it.
Like all her books, this relentless rollercoaster grips you in her paws but also leaves you feeling more than a bit bewildered, when not downright confused. Hopefully, it won’t follow the same path as Dorina and Cassie.
I actually like it and it was actually really good. and. Could we get a Elena series Doria‘s mother like how why she was on earth in the first place and how she meet Mircea . and also what she has been doing all this time in her perspective that and is she queen of her own kind does she live in a castle in the gods realm there’s so many questions and that would actually be great.
Lia is back and better than ever, really enjoyed the fast paced fun story, with an excellent cameo from our favourite former gladiator and Pythia. Highly recommend this series if you love Cassie and Dory, read the shorts and Junk Magic first
I do love me a magical upgrade... Lia is learning new skills, or rather old lost skills. Lots of action and plenty of heart as Clan Fireborn gets off to a rocky start.
