There’s part of me that thinks having Chinatsu get injured might have partially been to put the focus entirely on Taiki for this arc, devoid of any distractions. Whether true or not, it works a treat.
Most of this volume is the brutal slugfest between Taiki and Haryu for one of the two singles spots at nationals. Being the senpai and in his last year, Haryu has a lot on his side, but Taiki has been working hard for a long time now. Is that hard enough though?
Far be it from me to ruin that surprise, as this is one kinetic brawl interspersed with flashbacks that show Haryu’s own dedication and his efforts to be a good senpai to his teammates. It is just a perfect sequence from start to finish.
We get little glimpses of the rest of the cast, but the on court action is the focus and it delivers on what it’s trying to accomplish. There are also minor moments for Moriya, Hina, and the rest, but this is really Taiki and Haryu’s show.
That said, the new students are trying to figure out if Chinatsu has a boyfriend and somebody saw Taiki carrying her. This leaves the Shuttlecock of Damocles dangling over their relationship, but also features a wild daydream by that girl with a crush on Taiki that is the funniest thing the series has ever done.
When you’re watching a badminton match play out, interspersed with other badminton matches, there’s not a ton to discuss. The effort and intensity of the players is all there on the page, along with the love of the game.
Sometimes a little understated, but in a good way, Blue Box continues to be a little bit of pure joy every time I get a new volume. It isn’t go go go from minute to minute, but it has a rhythm that I just love, and sometimes it just explodes, like this time.
5 stars - a perfect volume that does exactly what it’s trying to do and is full of payoff from so many earlier moments.
WOW. absolutely one of my favourite volumes yet. I’m not gonna say I teared up again…at multiple chapters…but…AND who knew a badminton match through drawings and words could be so intense?!? My heart was pounding throughout Taiki and Haryus match!! It’s just written so incredibly well and the art is beautiful.
4.5 stars. I think if I reread it closer to the new introduction of characters or previous volume, it would have been 5 stars. I swept through this so quickly and cheered for Taiki. I'm so excited to see where it's all going. The slow growth is so great as well as the messaging. I just couldn't tell the difference between the two new girls at times with the younger one having me scratch my head a bit. And, while I love the lovely Hina, he felt shoehorned in as well as the quick doubles mention. It could have been better done and paced with an extra chapter before just moving on after all the attention to detail in the previous volumes.
Taiki/Haryu has to be my favorite match-up so far. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, torn between who to root for...and tbvh I absolutely cried.

Finally arrived at the volume about Taiki and Haryu. this chapter is the most memorable in my opinion in this volume, can be seen from the flashback of Taiki's efforts so far. I was even touched by the results. the mystery of who Taiki was carrying also seems to be solved?
I would also be sad if Haryu and friends had to leave the club to focus on the final exam. Memories during high school are indeed the most memorable!
I’m happy Taiki got into Nationals but I’m sad that Haryu only got in by Doubles. That game was intense! I wonder if Hyodo’s little sister will figure out that Taiki and Chinatsu are dating. I wonder how that goes down. I ‘m also curious about Ayame and Kyo. If Saki (?) liked Kyo, why didn’t they end up together? I hope I’ll find out soon.

Every time I read this I am amazed how much I like this. It is sweet, grounded and full of emotions. It's been lovely for a while and somehow it feels like it is getting better.
