Saint Alfonso María de Liguori, CSsR (1696–1787), was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian.
He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his "Moral Theology" in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are "The Glories of Mary" and "The Way of the Cross", the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions.
He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, he is the patron saint of confessors.
A phenomenal work by the Prince of Moral Theologians. This work by St. Alphonsus is truly moving and something that all Christians, or really anyone should read. The Doctor of the Church in great is quite convincing of describing the joys of heaven, and what must we do to get there, and the excruciating pains of hell, and how we may easily lapse into sending ourselves there. Throughout the work, he makes points of consideration and reflects on them with prayers. In this modern world, where even many Christians take God's grace for granted, and the pains of hell for granted, St. Alphonsus provides a clear reminder of the importance of obeying God's will no matter what and that the things of our temporary, corporeal lives are nothing compared to eternity - and eternity we choose where we may rejoice with God and the Angels and Saints, or one where we shall suffer and hate our Maker and wish for anything but that suffering. Anyone who may be suffering from recurring sins or may not take sin seriously will find this work to shock them awake, and St. Alphonsus holds nothing back.
On a side note, this work would serve as an excellent template for a priest who wishes to have a series of homilies describing the importance of avoiding sin, repenting of our sins, and growing to obey God's will.
