When You Left Me Speechless

Rate this book
Poppy Collins has one rule. "Nothing serious with a guy until after graduation. "

For the last five and half years, she has worked hard to become a speech therapist despite starting college later than all of her friends. When a small mistake threatens to delay her graduation, or worse, keep it from happening at all, she finds herself scrambling to ensure her dream becomes a reality. All she wants is to forget her troubles, and a night out seems like the perfect solution.

Logan Peterson has had some bad luck in the dating department. When he walked into The Local, he planned to have a couple of post-game drinks with his friend and then go home alone. But when he unexpectedly runs into Poppy, going home alone is the last thing he wants to do. After a night full of flirty banter, dancing, and too many shots, Poppy is left wondering how the night ended, and Logan is left wondering if he will ever see her again.

So when Logan walks back into Poppy's life when she least expects it, she's left speechless.

When You Left Me Speechless is a fun, friends-with-benefits, forbidden romance story that should definitely be added to your TBR. The story opens with a '90s party and mention of Romy and Michele's HS Reunion, so naturally, I was immediately obsessed.

Poppy Collins is a speech therapy graduate student who is close to graduating. Mistakes are made, and she is left scrambling to find a new clinical externship. She goes out with a friend to help get her mind off things for a bit. While at The Local, Poppy runs into Logan Peterson. They hit it off and have a fun night together. The next morning, she skips out with no intention of seeing him again. To her surprise, Logan is a teacher at the school where she gets a last-minute externship.

As a former teacher, I love reading books that feature teachers as main or secondary characters. Logan and Poppy were so cute together. Although a relationship between a teacher and an extern is forbidden, they simply could not help themselves. Their chemistry was palpable, and I loved every second of it. The banter, texting, tension, caretaking, and heat had me smiling and kicking my feet while reading this story. Logan has definitely earned himself a spot on my list of book boyfriends. I loved the friendships, family support, the adorable Tuesday Talkers, and the author's portrayal of anxiety. I also loved the chapter titles and the pop culture references.

When You Left Me Speechless is a solid debut from Jess Christine, and she is clearly a very gifted writer. The story is perfectly written, the details are well thought out, the pacing is great, and the characters are relatable. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one in this series.

I must say this ..
I love books that have mental health representations, from the moment the book starts we get anxiety rep.
As someone who suffers from panic attacks / anxiety I can relate to poppy!!

I also loved that it was dual pov so we got both sides of the story.
& the short chapters, I think she made them short so you’d be wanting more of the book 🫠🫠🤍 (it worked I absolutely couldn’t put this book down)

I loved both main characters
Poppy is anxious and really smart
Logan he absolutely leaves you speechless & it’s funny because of the book title but as you’re reading you’ll see exactly why & what I mean by that!
I loved how he didn’t push poppy’s boundaries he was respectful of her.

Christine really did an amazing job making her characters relatable. I at least related soo much with poppy, there was a bunch of moments where I connected with poppy.

“But I know that my life doesn’t make sense without you in it.”

Forbidden romance combined with he falls first and friends with benefits? Say less!

Poppy is a speech therapy student who makes a mistake and has to make a quick change to graduate on time. Enter Logan, the man she meets after she finds herself out at the bar with her bestie, Leah. Little does she know, Logan is a teacher at the school Poppy will complete her final externship before graduation.

A relationship between a student extern and a teacher is forbidden but their feelings and chemistry is electric!

To say I’m completely obsessed with Logan and Poppy is an understatement! Logan is a super sexy and super sweet 5th grade reading and writing teacher who will lend you his hoodie and make you swoon. Poppy is an adorable anxiety ridden graduate student who may or may not have a coffee problem and she will make you feel seen.

I am blown away with Jess Christine! There is no way that this captivating, emotional, and sexy story is her debut! This story has all of my favorite tropes (forced proximity, forbidden romance, and friends with benefits). I love how witty Logan is and how I can easily identify with Jess. I love the text on the page, the references to Taylor Swift (always), the mention of amazing movies, their first actual date and the playlist that accompanies the book!

Please add this to your TBR now! You won’t regret it!

Logan is fantastic, a sweet Golden Retreiver elementary teacher, and an absolute top tier book boyfriend. poppy is my little anxious flower, and I love her, I related to her, she is me, coffee addiction and all.

3.5 - Cute love story, super relatable main character - as a speech therapist, the anxiety of finishing grad school, making silly mistakes that you constantly fear will derail your whole career, feeling the need to be perfect, particularly for your supervisors, was all too real! I loved the emphasis of the support she had from family and friends. I wanted more of the therapy/career side but I know that probably wouldn’t be as interesting to the common reader.

Romance, particularly super spicy reads, usually isn’t my preferred genre so at times I was shocked by the descriptiveness of some of the bedroom scenes, DAMN! Reader be warned, spice level is HIGH. 🌶️🔥🌶️🔥🌶️🔥

I wasn’t sure I liked Logan at first because he seemed to sexualize Poppy quickly before getting to know her, but he proved himself worthy throughout the remainder of the book.

Overall, kept my interest, was cute, HOT, super relatable, easy read. Good summer read.

*ARC* Student therapist/Teacher
I was very curious to see how their relationship would pan out. They both have jobs and careers that they truly care about. And it turns into a "what more important?" situation.
He is such a teddy bear and a teacher at the school where she becomes a teacher student while getting her Master's in speech therapy. You have two people with a past that changed how they think of themselves. And it is just 😭 seeing how they find a way.
The epilogue was my favorite. I'm so glad the author included that!

This was so cute! Poppy and Logan are adorable and the characters on their own are really well developed. They each come into their own during this book and it is wonderful, watching both of their personalities change and blend.

The concept is not something I’ve heard of before, and I really enjoyed it. The plot was really good too and really well thought out. It didn’t feel rushed, and there were no plot holes!
I really enjoyed this and wish that I could read it again for the first time!

This one is spicyyyyy. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

So beware if you prefer to avoid the open door scenes. There are a ton.

BUT this debut was very well-written, and I applaud this author! She did a great job developing an interesting story with life-like characters you come to love facing conflicts that have you empathizing and advocating for fictional characters. Good writing that shows more than tells and weaves in humor, inside jokes, and depth is my favorite!! This author absolutely did this in her book, and I would be happy to recommend her books & read many more by her! Thank you so much to Jess for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Honestly, it was such a good debut.

Poppy is trying to graduate to become a speech therapist, but she makes a mistake on her paperwork, leading her internship to fall through. Her sister gets her set up in an elementary school, which is not the environment she really wanted, but she is happy to accept whatever at this point. To de-stress from the fiasco of possibly not interning so possibly not graduating, her roommate makes her go out for a 90’s themed night at the bar, and Romy & Michelle meet a Logan & Tanner. The night was a hit, but Poppy moves right along with her life because she has to focus on school, but when she walks into Pecan Grove Elementary to begin interning, she is shocked and more than a little bit excited that Logan Peterson is a well-loved 5th grade reading teacher there, and she will now be working alongside him in the classroom.

*ARC REVIEW*

The way that this made my little heart swoon. I feel like this story was just so cute and such a fun, easy read.

Our two main characters are Poppy and Logan who meet by chance only for Logan to be such a gentleman in not making an advance on a very drunk girl (points to him), he doesn’t anticipate ever seeing her again when she leaves the next morning.

Poppy, a speech therapist student pursuing her master’s, ends up being placed in an externship at no other than the school that Logan HAPPENS to be a teacher at. So the idea of never seeing each other again goes right out the window.

Through a series of mishaps, the two slowly come to realize there’s something here and they give it a very secret chance, as the two of them being together can absolutely ruin both Logan’s career, and Poppy’s before it even starts.

I think one of the things I loved the most about this story is the ability to see myself in Poppy’s shoes. I, too, once dropped a lot of my life for a boy who never saw more with me, but I was so unaware. This book is a great reminder that we all deserve to be loved, and that what one person may say about us says more about them than it does us.

What a fantastic debut novel! I thoroughly enjoyed reading When You Left Me Speechless by Jess Christine. I thought it to be a fun and easy read. I got lost in the world of Poppy and Logan. I couldn't stop smiling as I flipped through the pages. I was laughing or giddy as I read their story.

From the beginning, the chemistry was electric and perfect! The banter was wonderfully put together. I also enjoyed the fleeting looks, the obvious tension, and then the spice that kept getting spicier. 😮‍💨🔥

The author draws you in the plot, leaving you wanting more. I have to mention that the book's secondary characters and friendships are fantastic. I'm looking forward to reading more from this delightful series!

Friends with benefits + forbidden romance + he falls first!

When a small mistake not long before graduation happens, Poppy finds herself at a bar with her best friend. After a night of flirting & dancing, she goes home with Logan.

The last thing she expected: Logan to be a teacher at the school she’s doing her externship at.

A relationship is forbidden.

These characters were perfection!!! Their banter, chemistry, and personalities were just written so well!!! That is something that is hard for me to find in a book and I was so happy I found it in this one!

Following our FMC’s journey not only through the romance plot, but also through her career as a speech therapist was so cool! Often romance books only have a romance plot, which is okay, but I think they are something special when the characters have stories outside of the romance plot. Both MCs had intriguing plot lines that were outside of the romance plot and I loved it!

If you like banter, tension, and spice, this is the book for you!

This book!! I absolutely fell in love with Poppy and Logan and their story is just precious! Super fun meet cute turns into workplace forbidden romance. Logan is the absolute best book boyfriend. So attentive to Poppy's needs and waits patiently for her to be able to give him all of herself. Poppy struggles with anxiety but Logan is great support as she works through that. She is still a very strong woman who works hard for her dreams. And the side characters are gold! The ending was so special and it set up so well for book two. SO SO good!

I really, really enjoyed this book!! Poppy was a great character, and I really loved the way she navigated the changes to her life and plans. I would have liked to see more about her anxieties, as far as how they present themselves and a further self-awareness from her on what might trigger her anxiety, before it happens. And Logan was totally sweet and swoon-worthy, the whole time! His unwavering support for her was just so heart warming and beautiful! And all the friends made this story so wonderful! Both had friends and family that made my whole heart just melt from their love and support. And the twist at the end?? Oooh boy I can’t wait for the next book!! I really loved this one, on the whole, and I would highly recommend it!!

⭐️ Star Rating: 4/5
🌶️ Spice Rating: 3/5

A solid 4/5 stars for me. Some downfalls are 1) I need this turned into a duet audiobook like yesterday and 2) that the MMC is almost too good to be true. Logan seems pretty self-aware and seems very much like he was written as if he was a fantasy. I really liked the FMC as she reminds me of all of us who struggle with imposter syndrome. Poppy is relatable, but I would have loved to reach into this story to smack some sense into her (in that way I feel very much like her bestie Lacey). Poppy and Logan’s story is cute and overall this is a great feel-good romance with a HEA. Thank you thank you thank you to Jess for including an epilogue. I would have liked to get into the more technical aspects of Poppy’s work as a student SLP (primarily because speech therapy is beyond overlooked with like everything, ever). However, that’s on me as a fellow rehab professional just wanting Speechies to get all the recognition they deserve. The dual POV is excellent. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone in the rehab field, but also to ANYONE who wants to read a feel good romance.

I was very excited to receive this ARC and have a chance to review for this author! I really loved the representation of mental health in this book and showing the actual struggle of school and entering the “adult” world. The MMC is a super sweet and supportive man that anyone would want to have in their life. Our FMC Poppy shows us her struggle of panic attacks and how she can get them when she’s stressed which is so very relatable! Poppy is so smart and determined with her career path and how she wants her future to go.
The chemistry between the two is so undeniable and can feel the tension right away. Especially the angst in the beginning when it seemed to be forbidden to them. I love a book and author that can pull off tension and banter between their characters!
Overall great story for a debut novel and so excited to see what is next for her!!

I read this book for a book club with other newly graduated speech-language pathologists and we were so hopeful we would love it but...tragically I had to force myself to finish it because I didn't enjoy it. The SLP aspects were entertaining and the romance was sometimes cute, but the rest of it was hard to get through. The writing was off (unnatural lack of contractions and timing that was so often illogical), the plot was just over-the-top and predictable especially at the end, AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS. I hope the author someday realizes that the ideal man is in fact not one who consistently pushes your boundaries and claims it's because he loves you, he shouldn't express intimacy by being controlling, and he shouldn't isolate you from your friends and completely distract you from your Masters degree. He does all this and more and I'm supposed to think he's the dream man?

Jess Christine's debut novel in the Romance Rehab series is nothing short of captivating. From the first page, readers are enveloped in a steamy, heartwarming embrace akin to a cozy hug on a chilly day.

For fans of Emily Henry and Ali Hazelwood, this book is a must-read, as it seamlessly blends romance, emotion, and forbidden love in a way that keeps you hooked until the very end. The dual point of view adds depth to the narrative, allowing readers to intimately connect with the main characters and their journey.

Speaking of the characters, falling in love with them is inevitable. Their complexities, vulnerabilities, and undeniable chemistry leap off the page.

The forbidden romance element adds an extra layer of tension and excitement, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and eagerly turning pages to see how it all unfolds. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🤭

As the final page is turned, readers are left eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. Jess Christine has created a world and characters that leave you SPEECHLESS and I’m obsessed!!!

I need book 2 ASAP 🥰
