It's been a while since reading the previous installment in the Mindguard series, and I've quite forgotten most of the details except for the overarching story and general character traits. Luckily, this book does a good job to reestablish the relevant events of the previous books and especially to contour the less important characters which get a bigger focus in this one.

The story is pretty much straightforward this time, with a bit of necessary arrangements in the first third in order to get the good guys on the same page so they can deal with the imense threat facing the whole universe. That leads to some tension and gripping predicaments. Even though this is the longest book in the series, it did not feel like that at all.

What I remarked is that it is not the story or the action that were the most interesting. There weren't any big twists to blow the reader's mind (which is quite refreshing!), instead the highlights are the small breathing moments, scenes that focus on the characters, their lives and personalities, moments of reflection in the face of their destinies. There are some great quotes and meditations all throughout the book.

I'm glad that Andrei Cherascu managed to put an end to the series, which overall creates a very rich and well developed, cohesive universe, home to several linked but quite different stories, interesting characters, and that offers a great meditation on what humankind is and could quite plausibly be.
