I caught the attention of a boy with a grudge. Didn’t ask for it. Didn’t know I was connected to what he lost. But once he sees me, he doesn’t look away.
Javier de la Garza is rich, brilliant, and untouchable. And what he wants—he takes.
He says he wants to protect me. But every time I let my guard down, he pulls me deeper into his world— with soft words, twisted promises, and hands that never let go.
I should’ve walked away. I didn’t.
And now? He’s made sure I never can.
This book is Part 1 of a dark high school romance with a possessive and wickedly manipulative hero who will stop at nothing to keep the woman he believes is his. The story will continue in Part 2.
Promising story with Hispanic characters, an Afro-Latina heroine, but it was just too slow. The story just wouldn’t take off, and I found myself losing attention. I couldn’t get into this one like the other in the series. Dnf 20%
I really enjoyed reading about Javier’s obsession with Camila and how it deepened. I will read Book 2. Not 5 stars because some of the author’s editing highlights were still there and some paragraphs repeated themselves. In addition, no trigger warnings about death of a child nearly made me put this book down. I read for escapism as topics about childhood sickness is too close to home. Author must have warnings so not to upset her readers as could affect her following in the future. Had I read about this topic a few months ago, I wouldn’t have finished the book. But as I am feeling a bit stronger now, I was able to complete.
Ms. Skeete is one of the few writers who make dark romances appealing to me. Her tales are more on the psychological side. And Javier is a piece of work. As you are reading, you see all the red flags of grooming and a controlling personality. Yet you wonder how is Ms. Skeete going to turn this around to make this appealing. Because Javier is highly intelligent. A control freak with high intelligence is scary but also attractive. Don't ask me why. I want Camila to run but he has her boxed in. She's going to need to outfox him. I can't wait to read part 2 to she what Camila does because Ms. Skeete definitely does not write weak female leads.
I enjoyed the second book of this series. Great plot, I love the back and forth between them. I love how she stood her ground, knew what she wanted, and where she wanted to go. Now MMC… did the BGM do that to him? He was seriously possessive, obsessive and anything else you want to throw in there. But I’m here for it all!!! Lol
