At night the children lay to rest. In the morning their beds lie empty.Stillhearts Home for Lost Children stands atop the hill, looking down on its impoverished townsfolk below. Within its walls holds captive something Dakota needs. His son. The only thing holding him back? His never-ending guilt from past crimes committed, Eddie’s nervous reluctance, and Walter’s new taste for something other than a simple meal. Finding the boy will not be as easy as dotting I’s and crossing some T’s. Especially in a place controlled by the thing lurking in the mansion’s bowels. Follow the trio in their journey and see where, how, and if they all get out alive.

The second book in the series reunites previous characters for a brand new adventure! A prison escape, folkloric monsters, curses, and more! So far it’s been a thrilling time jumping back into this world.
I loved reading about the myths and legends, the time frame jumps, and the Canadian settings in this terrifying tale. It was great to catch up with familiar narrators and go through new challenges. This was a rollercoaster of a story, and the ending…Let’s just say readers won’t be seeing the last of Cold Keep…
OK here we go again! One of my favorites books of 2023, "Cold Keep Reprisal," just got a sequel, "Cold Keep Requital" - and what a sequel it is! It's got supernatural monsters, Windigo spirits, a mysterious basement, a malicious girl tormenting her parents, scared kiddies disappearing overnight, a gothic orphanage with a disturbing backstory, sinister plots, Indian lore and deeply flawed characters you easily learn to care about! Picking up two years after the first book, it's darker, meaner, but also funnier and more entertaining! And that ending - taking a deus ex machina finish and turning it into the best of cliffhangers!
James Lurid has really raised the bar with this one: he's captured both a sense of impending doom, as the familiar trio of Walter, Dakota, and Eddie investigate the mysterious orphanage to find Dakota's son, and the sweetly good vibe of friendly banter. Sometimes this hides a lot of darkness and cruelty, the unsettling scenes coming with no warning, demanding from the reader nerves of steel; other times, humor dominates and it's not hard for one to suspend disbelief and happily swallow even the most incredible of twists.
If you've already read the first book, do not miss this one: not only does it delivers in precisely those ways the first book did, it also piles up even more - a good, complex plot, relatable characters, and vain, greedy, truly evil villains you'll love to hate!
Its Clear James Lurid is a raising author in the horror genre, definitely worth your time in reading his books.
This book is the second on in the Cold Keep series, reading the first one will enhance the second ones read and allow the reader to understand the relationship between the trio.
What I enjoy about these books is there is no labels on the creatures/monsters, James allows the reader to label them as we see fit.
Each book has almost list a past story with a bit of history from the origin of the monster which enhances the read and adds depth to the story. As I got deeper into the book I found myself thinking I knew how the book would end and expecting a corny, happy cliché ending, much to my appeasement this did not come and it did not end in the way I thought it would which heightened my reading experience.
Great book and amazing read James, I cannot wait for the third one!
I knew as soon as I was asked to read the sequel to Cold Keep I was going to love it and it did not disappoint! It was if I was immediately reunited with old friends. I loved the new characters and the darkness that seemed to hide in the shadows. There are various legends of monsters that have roamed our lands for centuries James Lurid gives those monsters a frightening identity in the most intriguing way. Searing the creature into the deepest depth of your mind. True evil doesn’t just come out when the sun goes down. Thank you for yet another exceptional read! I can’t wait until the next chapter of this journey.
Cold Keep Requital is the sequel to James Lurid’s Cold Keep Reprisal. The story picks right back up where book one CKR left off. The plot is rock solid with likable characters. Canadian Indian legend-myth spills off the pages of these books and leaves you splattered in the aftermath of a complete book hangover. These books are extremely well-written. From page one you can tell how much time and care has been poured into the pages of this book. James Lurid has a real talent for writing. I can’t wait for what is next from him.
Walter is trying to go back to his normal life after returning from ColdKeep. Things are definitely not the same. Walter is changing. When he is called to find two escaped convicts, things get more complicated. Can Walter fight the curse? Creepy read full of tension and suspense. Amazing characters you love several you hate. Pulls on heart strings while chilling your bones.
This book was just as good as the first one! It flowed really well and the descriptions were amazing. The characters were great as always and they really made you feel everything. You hated them, loved them and really felt for them. The overall story was intense and it dripped you and kept you engaged. I absolutely loved this book as much as the first one and can’t wait to read the third one when it’s available.
