Rate this book
Ziglar Ghostshade’s tranquil beach retreat on the sunny shores of Ipanema takes an abrupt turn when his only friends, Pepper and Floyd, arrive with a ludicrous plea for help. Without Ziggy to lead them, District DipShip’s team of homicidal misfits faces certain doom in the upcoming Super Serial Preliminaries—a brutal showdown where serial killers fight to the death in a lethal battle arena.

In a desperate bid to rescue the district from impending financial ruin, Ziggy ignores all basic survival instincts and agrees to transform DipShip’s ragtag squad of perennial underdogs into champions. Because really, what good are friends if they can’t help out in a killer crisis? But wrangling a team of second-rate assassins turns out to be the least of Ziggy’s problems. His reappearance in the public eye ignites the rage of Hirofumi Ito, the world’s most powerful and ruthless CEO, hell-bent on teaching Ziggy a lethal lesson.

As DipShip’s uncertain future collides head-on with Ziggy’s haunted past, he must outwit not just the killers, but also the corrupt system that cheers them on.

Get ready for a gut-busting, adrenaline-pumping ride through the warped world of Super Duper Serial, the second riotous installment in the Super Serial series. In this dark comedy thriller, where corruption and survival intertwine, saving the day might just demand a killer sense of humor.

Is this just an extremely population dense earth, or do people just do hellacious amounts of crime?

I did the math, and I'm a little bamboozled about the numbers. There are 309 teams of 5 serial killers competing. This makes a minimum of 1,545 serial killers competing, and it's a necessary fact that they keep extras on the side as it's mentioned a team can have backups in each category in case their first is killed. Let's just go with the numbers required for the competition, though.

One of the categories is centennial killers, which have committed a minimum of 100 homicides. If we simply go with that minimum and credit 3 kills to the other 4 serial killers on the team, we end up with 34,608 victims at a minimum for THIS YEAR'S competition. Add the other 25 for Benedict's 28 kills, and we have 34,633 serial killer victims to create Super Serial. Assuming most other Super Serial competitions don't necessarily feature centennials, that's at least 4,635 yearly victims. For easy math (and because an extra 400 people is children's play in this world) we're going to round up to 5,000.

Now, this book doesn't take place entirely within the United States and there are no global statistics on serial killers, but let's assume this whole world has simply taken on the attitude of the United States with the spread of capitalism. There are over 3k documented serial killers in US history, with the next highest country coming in under 200 (looking at you, UK). Even with those numbers, US serial killers contribute less than 1% of the homicides each year. That means with about 5,000 yearly serial killer victims, we have 500,000 homicide victims a year in this world. On bad years (the year we are currently experiencing in the book apparently) that number is going up to 3,463,300 (assuming that everybody else is ramping the homicide up at the same rate).

Now, approximately 440,000 people are lost to homicide each year. Let's assume that crimes are being committed at a similar rate to current times. Going by the "normal" year of Super Serial, the population of the world is only 9 billion. Going by the "bad" year, the population is about 62.9 billion. The rate at which people die in this book (complete with an easy thousand deaths of rapists and child predators for the preliminary games), speaks to a population much closer to that 63 billion mark. The lack of serial killer protection companies indicates that perhaps the extreme population is to blame for the massive amounts of death happening due to homicide, rather than an increase in crime rates. However, this is definitely a question I would love to hear an answer for from the authors.

great book once again and I did find myself laughing through this one too!

An unhinged ride through a dystopian comedy hellscape!
It's difficult to articulate what's happening in Super Duper Serial. Because saying it out loud might get me banished from the internet. Because there is so much happening underneath the whacky veneer of poorly groomed serial competitors and their digestively challenged marshal. Because Floyd is my favorite character for his goodness and for the complexity of his decisions. Because the world of Super Duper Serial is so messed up and also ... hilarious?
My favorite thing about satire, dystopian, and [dark] comedy stories is how they contain multitudes while taking you on an adventure that breaks the tension of devastating reality.
Harker McNair rides the balance of dark comedy and intentional themes with talent and.... well, definitely not finesse. But I promise you, Super Duper Serial is a good one and if you can stomach the weird/víølencę, it's a must read!

This was (as always) such a fun read by Harker McNair. I would describe this book as dark humor within even darker subject matter... but with heart. This is the second book in the series where we follow Ziggy and his team of serial unalivers, who are forced to participating in a grand championship for serial unalivers ...basically, death Olympics. (That in itself cracks me up... Like I said, dark humor.) You find yourself rooting for the team, though, as serial unalivers, you shouldn't.... but you won't be able to help yourself!

Are you kidding me? There has to be another book! This story cannot be finished! You can’t just leave me grinning like an idiot, flipping the last page like, “Wait... that’s it?” I need more ridiculous chaos, more awkward brilliance, and definitely more of whatever unhinged breakfast this author is eating. This book had me laughing out loud in public like a maniac, and should probably with a warning label. It's clever, weird in the best way, and dangerously addictive. Five stars, easily. If there's not another one quickly, I'm writing one myself with sock puppets and a whiteboard.

I absolutely loved Super Serial and couldn’t wait for the second book, Super Duper Serial. I was not let down. This was a great 2nd book! I think this one was more gory than the first, which didn’t bother me as I love the horror genre. But it also made me laugh so many times.

This series is so well written and fast paced. I didn’t want to stop reading. I eagerly await the third book.

Wow, I couldn't put Super Duper Serial down! You have met the DipShip Super Serial team and now its time to see them in action. The authors did a great job at describing the playing field and how the games work. The action is non-stop, and it really cements just how corrupt these corporations really are. My only complaint is the third book isn't out yet!

I love these books! It’s like Hunger Games with serial killers! The authors did such a great job keeping the story going and incorporating plenty of humor…Big Montana Ice is so inappropriate but I’m here for it! I’m assuming there will be a third book and I am so excited!
