1790s, West Yorkshire. The industrial revolution is gathering pace, and business is booming for talented apothecary Amelia Boden… until it isn’t. Suddenly homeless and having only meagre savings with which to re-establish herself, she also faces double competition from a new cut-throat chemist, and a Scottish physician.
Dr Alistair Murray was forced from his hospital practice in Edinburgh and longs for a fresh start in country practice far from home. He finds the local apothecary highly intelligent, as well as attractive. She is obviously down on her luck, though, and he sets out to win her friendship and perhaps, in time, her hand. To do that, he must master the shameful weakness that drove him out of Scotland. Unbeknown to him, however, Amelia is not free to marry. Even if she were, she would never trust her lot to a man again, even one as attractive, skilled and caring as Dr Murray.
Just as she is getting back on her feet, disaster strikes again. Now truly penniless, Amelia finally faces having to join her brother William in India. Dr Murray offers her only salvation, but by now both know each other’s secrets. Can they find a way to be together, or will experience and circumstance force Amelia to India forever?
A sweet, clean historical romance set in northern England.
