Grunts of Vanguard #1

Breathless Recruiter

Rate this book
An alien who squeals for chocolate, office romance, and a hero you'd die to protect.

Vanguard's third strongest hero and I still sleep with a night light.

To blend in with the earthlings, my alter ego Wyatt Supreme works at Secret Identities Incorporated. Nobody suspects that behind these perfect dimples and bulging biceps is an alien haunted by his father's last words. Your greatest weakness will be... He never finished the sentence. I've spent my whole life waiting to find out what comes next.

Then there's the hunky fearless security guard downstairs who saves me from a menacing mouse terrorizing my office. When he laughs, it's with me... not at me. Unfortunately, Earth Mom didn't teach me how to flirt, but I can't stop thinking about his massive… nightstick.

Nobody knows I'm an alien. I'd like to keep it that way.

What if knowing the truth sends him running? What if my father was right and this is exactly how I get myself killed? What if he's worth the risk?

Time to put on my big boy pants and save the day.

Breathless Recruiter is a M/M, heartfelt adventure with an HEA and no cliffhangers. Expect cinnamon roll alien heroes, awkward encounters, steamy romps, found family, and an office romance nobody saw coming.

Ryder O'Malley

Ryder acts as if he doesn’t watch sappy movies. He won’t admit to daydreaming about ex-boyfriends and asking “What if…” He’s a closet romantic who gets anxious about first dates. In a world filled with turmoil, he’s wants to drown in warm, fuzzy moments that make his heart swell. He loves bringing his chaotic dating life to the forefront. While he calls himself a romance writer, he likes to think of it as fanfic about his life. Someday… it’ll become a reality. Until then, he’ll invent dreamy men that make him tear up at their insistence that love always wins.

Ryder lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, living his happily ever-after. When he’s not writing, he can be found working on book covers (which means he’s admiring huskular bears with more than a little chest hair.)

Breathless Recruiter: Book 1 of Ryder O'Malley's "Grunts of Vanguard" series, a prequel to his previous two series in the Vangaurd heroic m/m romance universe. Full disclosure, I read a little bit of the book prior to its release as a beta reader.
Unlike Ryder's previous works, Breathless Recruiter is less of an epic adventure and is more of a slice of life in Vangaurd City tale. Action happens, and is well written and fun, but the book is less "Justice League" and more "Peter Parker and MJ" in its focus. Once again we are treated to Ryder's hilarious wit and exceptionally spicy love scenes. The relationship between fish out of water MC Wyatt and his strong and supportive love interest, is endearing and relatable, and Ryder's talent at writing friendships shines here as it has in his previous work.
The story's villain is very two dimensional, however, this plays well with the MC's world view and Saturday morning cartoon hero vibe, and we are seeing the world through Wyatt's eyes after all. Reading Wyatt's voice took some getting used to, however, as well as his naïve and alien perspective. More than once I felt a little thrown off by how childish he came off, but as the story develops that happened less and less as Ryder finds his stride with Wyatt.
Overall, another fun in the universe of Vangaurd. I can't wait to see how the rest of the story develops. Perhaps some kink or a story with more than one love interest? I'm looking forward to readying more and exploring Ryder's heroic spin on romance!

Welcome to Secret Identities Incorporated, a company creating an app to make it easier for superheroes to find and fight the villains taking over Vanguard. Wyatt Supreme is the recruiter bringing more heroes to the app and secretly he's also the superhero named Mr. Supreme. Also, he's an alien from Halo tasked with protecting planet earth. He tries his best to fit in with the earthlings, but slang and innuendo are totally lost on him. And his biggest secret of all... he doesn't know his greatest weakness that his father tried to reveal to him before he left his home planet. Therefore, he's afraid of everything! Until a hunky security guard named Dustin saves him from a terrifying furry beast with large teeth, long whiskers and tail, known to earthlings as mouse. If this mere human can have the courage to save a superhero, maybe he can work up the courage to ask him out.
This story was truly original and had me laughing so hard. Wyatt is so clueless about how obvious his differences are to others when he's trying so hard to fit in. And Dustin isn't put off at all by his strangeness, so sweet and eager with his new superpowers yet supportive and brave enough to step in to the rescue. In my opinion, the writing needed some more editing, but the humor brought my rating up.

I do love a good prequel story. This one is about the advent of the HeroApptm and the team behind it. Wyatt's not a stupid man, he's just...simple. Naive. He misses a lot of social nuance. But he's also such a happy guy, as long as he has his Fudgey Bars. Dustin is an absolute sweetie, and he takes Wyatt as he is. All the guys (and Janet) are really good with Wyatt's social limitations. This was a great adventure/found family/romance/action story and I loved it.

This author always writes sweet feel good stories with characters you can't help but love despite their bumbling traits. I liked this one a lot and enjoyed the romance, the action, and all the well meaning and funny characters.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a sweet book. I was hoping for a bit more angst based on the other Vanguard books, but didn’t get it. We meet our main character, Wyatt Superior, on the first page. He works for a tech company, Secret Identities Incorporated, which made the HeroApp that is used by heroes in the other Vanguard books to identify crime spots. The beta version had been out for six months before the events of this book. Wyatt’s job with the company is to recruit other heroes to use the app since he’s one himself, Mr. Superior.

He's an alien who had been sent to Earth by his birth father to serve as the planet’s hero. Unfortunately, his ship crashed, and he was found by scientists who experimented on him before he was about to escape their lab. He has an aversion to the word lab, and the fact that his company shares a building with a laboratory run by his boss’s husband is a small plot point. Everyone who works at the company, but his boss’s twin sister, Janet, is gay. They’re also the only two without powers. Orion and Drew are his other two coworkers with his boss being Arthur.

Wyatt is incredibly precious. He was raised by a woman who he calls Earth Mom, as to differentiate her from his biological mom. He is naïve about nearly everything and doesn’t quite understand what his co-workers are talking about most of the time. Janet loves to throw innuendos around that Wyatt doesn’t get. That seems to be her sole job at the company. The others explain things to Wyatt in ways so he’ll understands.

He also doesn’t get social cues. Earth Mom raised him by herself and homeschooled him, so he didn’t get any sort of socialization before he left for Vanguard. He’s basically a child in the body of the third strongest hero in Vanguard. They had a contest.

A “furry little monster”, in Wyatt’s words, invaded his office one day and led to him meeting the other main character in the book. The furry little monster was actually an escaped mouse from the lab in the building. The hero was rescued by the building’s security guard, Dustin Stark. We don’t get his last name until, spoiler, they go on their first date!

Earth Mom didn’t teach Wyatt much about dating and all he knew about sex was from porn and his co-workers, but remember we do get a happily ever after. This book is very low angst.

With the lab in the building, we get the inevitable mad scientist as the main protagonist. Once again, this is low angst, so the fighting isn’t the focus. For a superhero book, it almost seems like an afterthought.

It is very spicy and that’s what saves it. We see Wyatt mature into an adult who can handle a real relationship with a real person. His dealings with Dustin are really sweet and we have to remember that Wyatt isn’t that old either. He’s in his early 20s I believe. I’m not sure how old Dustin is, but I doubt he’s much older. I gave this a four star because it’s more of a relationship story than a superhero story. Either way, I love the main characters. The plot isn’t what I wanted, but it still works. I hope, and expect books on the secondary characters because they’re written extremely well. I recommend this book.

Aside from being messy and inconsistent… again… this was another banger of a story.

I was a little confused/thrown-off at first, but then I realised I was now in a prequel timeline and that cleared things up. I could’ve figured it out sooner, but I never take the time to read blurbs or reviews when I’m in the thick of things. I just download the next book and keep going. It’s way more fun that way. Plus it was like page two when I figured out why I was confused, so. There’s also that.

(I do look out for trigger warnings and things that are hard limits for me. Figured I’d say that before I got the stink eyes.)

ANYWAY.

It was instalove for me with Wyatt. Simple, straightforward, says what he means and means what he says… perfection.

And then there was Dustin, being just as fucking perfect. The world needs more Wyatts and more Dustins. I said what I said.

I feel like I missed a novella for Arthur and Ricardo, and I want what I feel like I’m missing. Backstory is always the good shit. Oh, and another afterword hitting me right in my damn feels was a nice end.

3.75/5. With some TLE (Tender Loving Editing), this would be a 5/5, same sitch as the others. I love it, but suit pants and jeans aren’t the same, and for sure going from one chapter to the next and things that were already discussed and known being rediscovered and rehashed is awkward. Maybe I’m just not turtle-y enough for the turtle club. Idk. Still love it and can’t wait for Orion’s book.

Just when I think Ryder's books can't get any better.....

.....he gives us the origin story of the Hero App™ in the free prequel, Exposed Executive, which was something I didn't know I needed until I inhaled it, then follows that up with Breathless Recruiter, the first in the new spin-off series starring the inventor of the app, his little trio of new recruits and his (one-of-a-kind) sister.
Wyatt was just the sweetest thing, a cinnamon roll of a man who I just wanted to hug all the time. I loved him, with his almost childlike innocence and his chocolate addiction and his love for his mum. When he meets Dustin, the story just got better. Their attraction was instant and Dustin treated him perfectly, absolutely charmed by Wyatt from the start.
I also loved all the interactions between the team, with boss Arthur, Wyatt, Drew and Orion and most importantly in her own mind, Janet. It was such fun watching them all together and I can't wait to read both Drew's and Orion's stories.
I'm obviously biased but I loved Janet. She was such a wonderful addition to the Vanguard world and, if Ryder decided to write about the female goodies and baddies, I've absolutely no idea which side she would land on!

Breathless Recruiter starts the second spinoff in Ryder O’Malley’s Vanguard Community. As with all of Ryder’s Superhero releases there is plenty of snark, sex and a HEA.
Wyatt Supreme is an alien sent to help the citizens of earth. Wyatt has everything he needs to be a superhero except courage, preferring to help little old ladies across the street and save kittens from trees. He still sleeps with a nightlight and is afraid of pretty much everything.
Wyatt works in an office with two other superheroes helping their boss Arthur promote his new app by getting superheroes to sign up. Arthur’s boyfriend Ricardo has installed them in his new office building on the floor above his labs (cue the evil scientist). Wyatt literally bumps into the building’s Security guard Dustin and is enamored. Dustin is almost as big as Wyatt and delightfully chubby. Of course, Dustin is delighted by Wyatt even if he is a bit strange.
Wyatt is adorkable and Dustin is the perfect guy for him. There is lots of pining and bumbling and snark before these two get their HEA but it is a fun read if you love superheroes

Earlier this year I read a book that had a character who was so likeable he went straight to the top of my most favourite characters and I thought he would never loose the top slot, then Wyatt came along and with his super powers knocked him right off.
Wyatt was such an adorable character. I loved his naivety, he had me laughing so much with his internal monologues over what was happening around him. The simple pleasure he got with chocolate and so much more. I could go on, on how much I liked Wyatt but I do not want to spoil it for you.
Dustin who in Wyatt's opinion was better than his favourite bar of chocolate, was a sweetie. He was the perfect man for Wyatt and never once wanted to change Wyatt's quirky ways.
This story had a bit of everything in it, action, mystery and of course romance and I devoured it in one sitting. I loved Wyatt's found family and some of their antics/comments had me glad that I was reading this in my own home as I was laughing so loud, it would have drawn attention to me.
I cannot wait to read more of this series

Breathless Recruiter is a hilarious and heartwarming blend of superhero action and office romance. Wyatt Supreme’s mix of charm, insecurity, and dorky humor had me grinning the entire time. His struggle to reconcile his heroic image with his fearfulness makes him such a relatable and lovable character. And Dustin? Swoon-worthy, with just the right mix of confidence and tenderness to balance Wyatt’s chaos.

Ryder O’Malley nails the quirky office dynamics, the flirty banter, and the steamy tension, all while delivering plenty of laughs. If you love MM romances with a side of capes and comedic self-discovery, this one’s a winner!.

I really enjoyed this story. I did step into this book without reading any previous books in the Vanguard universe. While I definitely decided reading some introductory stories would have been a good idea, I caught on pretty quick. This story is single POV from the perspective of Wyatt (aka Mr. Supreme). Wyatt is a big teddy bear cinnamon roll and deserves the very best man. His found family is hilarious. Between Wyatt, his man, and his found family, there is so much humor - barbs, jabs, and quips. With love. And Janet is not to be ignored. Once I picked up this story, I couldn’t stop. I was addicted.

Hunky, bearded Superheros in action, one of them is an alien, secret identities, and spice. I enjoyed this book!. Wyatt, or Mr. Supreme, the alien from another planet is kinda weird, an innocent funny kind of weird. And he's obsessed with chocolate. I loved Dustin, a hot security guard, who also has superpowers. There's no big drama. It was sweet seeing how Dustin, and especially Wyatt, got together. And Wyatt made quite a character development.
I just found it confusing that Wyatt had no clue about a lot of things, despite living on earth for years. To me, he came across as if he just arrived at earth some weeks ago. Still a good read.

This is an absolute gem of a story. Wyatt, the cowardly superhero who is an alien, is one of the sweetest characters I've read in a while. He is desperate to hide the fact he's an alien, but he just can't figure out all the quirks of Earthlings so his strangeness is glaringly obvious. Dustin is attracted to him just as he is, and these two have a relationship that is filled with love, acceptance and humor. The world building and the characters of the rest of Wyatt's co-workers are delightful as well.

Wyatt is an alien who looks like a big sexy human and he's also a super hero. He is clueless at times on human cues, dating, sarcasm, sex, among other things. The new security guard has caught Wyatt's eye. How cute he and Dustin are with each other is a huge bonus to this story. Dustin turns out he's a beginning super hero too and soon both are helping humans via the Hero App. I was smiling quite a bit while reading and the other time fanning myself! Enjoyable start of a new series. Enjoy!.

Wyatt Supreme lives a very secret life. He works on the Hero App for Secret Identities Incorporated as a recruiter, but he is an alien with superpowers. Humans are very confusing to him. Dustin is the security guard in the building that houses scientific labs to help the hero’s in Vanguard. He also has a secret identity and powers. This story was so fun to read with Wyatt’s insecurities, quirks and confusion of human language. It is also full of action, steam and unusual characters.

I want to prefix this by saying this is my very first book from the author and I got it through GRR intrigued by the plot.

This is a sweet book. I didn't finish it because I felt that Wyatt's cluelessness after 10 years on earth was a bit unbelievable and I felt myself not really getting into it because it didn't resonate with me as much as it probably did with the others.

Wonderful story of Wyatt Supreme, office worker by day/superhero by night and Dustin, the security guard that works at Wyatt's building. Loved these characters and how being together makes them see the best of themselves and each other. First of series about a world where heroes and villains are mainstream and all the problems/fun that brings. Looking forward to more of this series.

Well, this is fun! Wyatt, is a hoot. Lots of miscommunication, misunderstandings, insecurity tainting a true self awareness and a crush on Dustin the security guard. Funny story about finding oneself and courage. Great adventure story and would probably make a great movie. Lots to see here worthy of a second read. Well done! This is such a sweet, funny and cute story!
Both main characters are just so sweet, and Dustin is so great with Wyatt.

All the supporting characters are kind, and don’t seem to care how much Wyatt misses when it comes to social cues.

Dustin and Wyatt are perfect together, and I loved their story!

He is the third strongest but he is hiding among the humans. He may be strong but inside he is a coward and he will meet the guard who may just be the one. He hopes it will rub off on him and they came to his rescue. See just how it will all go for them both

The writing was a little confusing at the start and personally I think that Wyatt was made too innocent, to the point he felt like a vulnerable person. However If you like a superhero mm romance this is really good, a definite link to superman kind of stories.
