Henry basically goes from one disaster to another, all of his own making, and he's a surly dickbag about all of it then Joanna gets caught up in all of his hot and cold reactions. This book sounds a bit like it was written by AI or just badly needs an editor for coherence. It has some weirdly worded areas, some of the situations don't make sense, and some of the conversations are hard to follow because we can't tell who is speaking to who.
Thank you to the author, Alianna Brookes, for sending me an ARC for a honest review.
Overall: 3.75
“You do not know me or what I am capable of”
Lady Joanna grew up in a lonely household as an only child to parents who either did not pay any attention to her or only paid attention to her when it helped their status within the ton.
- > I loved how even the character didn’t have opportunities to voice her strength to her parents, I admired how she slowly found her voice within her new household and role as duchess.
Caught alone with an unmarried lady, the notorious cold Duke of Nettledown, Henry, finds himself being forced into marriage.. but I he truly cold as everyone says?
- > the little bits the author put in the beginning about Henry’s personality were certainly nice to read, as it showed that he wasn’t cold to be cruel, but to keep others other from learning his family secrets.
Joanna and Henry couldn’t be more different if they tried, but opposites do attract! I think their differences are what brings them together. Joanna’s calm nature soothes Henry’s troubles, and Henry’s strong personality allowed Joanna to come out of her shell. While like in every historical drama there is a tiny lie, which turns into a misunderstanding, which turns into a mess, the ending makes it all worth it.
A clean story. I liked Joanna’s character. Being forced into the marriage by her mother who is just interested in status she tries to make the best of it. Henry and his sisters on the other hand were deplorable. He has allowed them to run riot, and whilst he is worried that Claire’s issue will ruin them, if nothing is done their own behaviour will make them scandalous. As regards Claire I am surprised her condition has not leaked out. It seems all the staff, or a lot of them know, I think it would have leaked through the servants. And does she and her sisters have no friends? There is no mention of any visitors at all. I feel some local important families would be calling to pay their respects to the new Duchess. And would Elise, Joanna’s maid not have picked up on Claire’s condition or at least more of the west wing from other staff. Does Joanna not wonder where the sisters are eating etc? Henry though just seemed very self centred and even though he realised his wife had been forced into the marriage (basically through his high handed actions) he would often ignore her and not even see her for days. Didn’t even enquire about her scream on her arrival - no was just not nice as far as I was concerned. This story did keep me engaged and reading though so because of that I think it just sneaks 4 stars.
DUKE HENRY - He disliked anything to do with the ton having to attend or give balls,he loved and cared for his people. He had four sister who he loved very much, they were his life he never intended to marry or have children of his own,he was the head of the family since the death of their parents, the problem was they were allowed to do exactly as they wished. Henry decided to give a ball as seeking information regarding a problem he had. LADY JOANNA - One of the kindest young ladies know to the Ton treated badly by her mother always told how unattractive and useless she was ( was never felt loved) because she was not the son her mother wanted. Attended the ball with her parents she heard a young lady scream for help Joanna did not hesitate to rush to help her when she arrived there was nobody there - suddenly around the corner her mother came screaming "WHY ARE YOU HERE WITH MY DAUGHTER"
THEN THE HEARTBREAK BEGINS - I LOVED THIS ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT HENRY BRILLIANT JOANNA BRILLIANT LOVED the SISTER'S AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ I LAUGHED AND CRIED I RECEIVED AN ARC
This book gave me a Beauty and The Beast vibe. Johana our heroine is married off to a man she barely knows. She wants to be part of the family but Henry is determined not to have a real marriage. He gives her all kinds of rules, including staying out of the castle's West Wing. However through Johana's kindness and love eventually Henry learns to love her.
This book was super sweet. Nothing too steamy. I enjoyed it and felt the author did a great job. So much of it reminded me of the story of Belle from Mrs. Finch to the sisters. I truly enjoyed this one and am happy I took the chance to read it.
Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of this. However, my review is done voluntarily and all thoughts are my own.
This story was amazing, first time reading this author and I am super impressed! So much heart in this book, telling in vivid detail the story of Henry and Joanna. Each character was fleshed out and felt real, the emotions and actions were described perfectly. The growth of the characters was wonderfully done and expressed. Heart warming and heart breaking at times, it was exactly a perfect story! I am excited to read more books by Miss Brooks - this one has grabbed my attention and made me a fan. Grab it, you won’t regret it!
His Inconvenient Duchess is truly a feel good romance and tugs at the heartstrings. I felt like I was taken back in time to an era where women were more respected in high society. The love and devotion that Henry has for his sisters is truly admirable. His Inconvenient Duchess was filled with unexpected twists and turns. If you like Pride and Prejudice, I highly recommend His Inconvenient Duchess, what a beautiful masterpiece.
This story has a bit of a mystery to it. The dialogue between the characters is what I liked. The heroine and hero are trapped into a marriage of convenience by her social climbing mother. The hero has secrets and is very closed off as he doesn’t trust the heroine. His sisters play pranks on her. The heroine is very sweet and compassionate and only wants love. I enjoyed the story as there were some twists and turns to keep my attention.
I enjoyed this quick and easy read and look forward to reading other books by Alianna Brookes. I do wish there had been more details/conversations to some parts of the story that seemed rather rushed trough (I won’t say more, so as not to spoil it) but overall found the story very enjoyable with only a few typos per chapter.
A sad story of a daughter not wanted by her mother, who only thought of using her to make a marriage with a man with a grand title! Her mother takes an innocent encounter and forcing a marriage because he is a Duke. Henry is furious but doesn’t want a scandal, he was hiding his own secrets! An enjoyable story!
I really enjoyed this exciting and exceptionally well written love story. I was hooked with its delightful and complex characters and the very entertaining plot containing so many twists and turns and so many emotional issues. The ending was very happy for all. I highly recommend reading!
