This. Play. Wow, this play. This is a masterpiece. It's been hours since I finished it and I can't stop thinking about it. Julia Cho expertly crafts a family that is so painfully real I had to put the script down and just process scenes. She cracks open the issues of generational trauma, queerness, perfectionism, the weight of expectation, and communication so perfectly I couldn't believe what I was reading. I'm shocked that, as someone who is so entrenched in theatre culture, I've never heard of her or her work before now -- and I'll definitely be reading more of her plays in the future.
Again proving why she is one of my favorite working playwrights, Cho gives us a play of a family at the end of their rope. Trying to bond over a road trip to Durango, the Lee family slowly opens up to each other and then close up tight again. This is a shot of people in transition, bonus point given to any play that uses comics to help the plot.
