Women of the Way #2

Before the King: Joanna's Story

Rate this book
Joanna's wealthy family aspires to Herod's inner circle, but when her father's esteemed position in the Sepphoris Sanhedrin is threatened, her family resorts to harboring a dark secret. As Joanna navigates the complexities of aristocratic life and an arranged marriage, she is caught between loyalty to her family and her own desires. When tragedy strikes, leading to a life-altering injury and a startling encounter with Herod's financial minister, Joanna must grapple with a new future--one that challenges her sense of duty and hope for love.

Years later, Joanna is forever changed when a rabbi comes preaching a new kingdom and healing the sick. Yet, she treads a perilous path between a court that mocks Jesus of Nazareth, a community of believers who views her with suspicion, and a husband who guards his own secrets. As pressure increases, Joanna must protect her allegiance to the Christ, whose message is as compelling as it is dangerous.

In this gripping narrative, rising author Heather Kaufman weaves a tale of faith, resilience, and love amid the danger of King Herod's court.

“God is fanning the smoldering wick of my faith into a bright flame.”

This is a heartfelt and inspiring story that follows two sisters and explores how one sister’s powerful faith impacted the other.

Dalia and Joanna, daughters of Itamar the Sadduccee, chief priest in Sepphoris, are raised to live unauthentically and the burden has surprising outcomes. Weaving between 60 AD Rome and 13 AD Israel, this story explores and wonderfully opens up biblical history and shows us how to love the life we’ve been given and bear fruit in unexpected places.

I loved the reminders that happiness takes time to harvest but we need to be busy nurturing it in the growth period, that fear and pride are the two sides of the same coin, and that there’s always a purpose when God gives us things we cannot understand.

I’ll remember this book because of what it taught me about having a faith that clings to God despite my circumstances.

My highlighter was working overtime and my emotions were on high alert as I read this touching, phenomenal biblical fiction story highlighting the life of Joanna from Luke 8 and Luke 24.

I’m looking forward to Salome’s story next!

I was gifted this copy by Bethany House and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

My Quick Takes:
- 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 closed-door

I enjoyed getting to know a fictional take on Joanna. I always love a biblical fiction and getting immersed into a time period of the bible. Before the King follows Joanna from youth to grown woman and culminates in a beautiful redemption arc.

While this is the second book in the Women of the Way series, this book can be read as a stand alone. I have not read the first book, Up from Dust and was able to follow the storyline easily.

If you’re a fan of the Chosen tv series, A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers, or historical fiction in general add Before the King to your TBR.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

Before the King is the second installment in the Women of the Way series, a collection of standalone novels linked by a common denominator, the hinge point of all history: Jesus. Each novel follows a different woman mentioned in the New Testament, but about whom little else is known. Before the King is the story of Joanna, wife to one of King Herod’s administrators and financial supporter of Jesus’ ministry.

I fell in love with Joanna pretty immediately. From the very first page, I found her incredibly compelling and sympathetic. Joanna’s Sadducee family lives life to the full. Or so they think. They fullness they’ve embraced is decadent and entitled and leaves Joanna feeling empty. There is deep-seated pain right beneath the surface of her seemingly perfect life. One bright spot is Dalia, Joanna’s sister who suffers from a then nameless affliction we now know as epilepsy. The stigma surrounding such a malady resulted in their parents sending Dalia away to live with country relatives while doing everything in their power to find the exceptionally beautiful Joanna a worthy match. Joanna and Dalia don’t often see one another, but Dalia’s faith and wisdom even in the midst of her affliction are incredibly inspiring. Her disability has drawn her closer to God instead of driving her farther away. I found her fervent faith in the midst of adversity beautiful and inspiring. Joanna felt the same, until an even greater tragedy struck.

Adrift and now crippled herself, Joanna’s life is suddenly radically different than the future her parents had envisioned for her. But even in the midst of pain both physical and spiritual, Joanna finds new and unexpected solace in Adonai. Then ensues a marriage of convenience full of mutual pining, followed by a relationship that will turn Joanna’s world upside down when she meets the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.

Something about Joanna’s honest struggles and deepening faith resonated so strongly with me that it made my heart ache. The presentation of Jesus through the eyes of Joanna was powerful, shining a new light on and giving a new angle to the Greatest Story Ever Told. Kaufman stays perfectly faithful to Scripture, and every aspect of the story felt theologically sound.

There was a romantic element to the plot that, while secondary, was incredibly well done. The aforementioned mutual pining was exquisite, and the emotional payoff of that pining finally being answered was substantial. I fell in love with the romantic lead alongside Joanna, and found their story moving.

Before the King is likely the best work of Biblical fiction I’ve ever read. It’s heartfelt and sincere, wise and fresh and encouraging. Joanna’s story is going to stay with me. If you’re only ever going to read one work of Biblical fiction, make it this one.

Title: Before the King
Author: Heather Kaufman
Genre: Biblical Fiction
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Synopsis: “Who was this rabbi who seemed wholly unaffected by Herod? And how could I share in his certainty and strength?” Joanna’s family is one of wealth and influence that also has its secrets. So when it’s time to marry, her parents seek to cover those up and find her the best match alongside a man in Jewish leadership. But devastating loss and traumatic circumstances change all arrangements made. When presented with a new proposal, Joanna embraces life in Herod’s court. But tumultuous political times come when a new Rabbi comes on the scene. Word of healing the sick, forgiveness of sins, and a new king begins to spread, and Joanna wonders if what is said about of him could really be true. And when she meets him, Joanna’s life is forever changed. The question now—is she really brave enough to follow Jesus?

Analysis: Heather Kaufman continues her Women of the Way series with Joanna’s brave and beautiful story. I think biblical fiction is one of the toughest subgenres to write because you want to write a compelling story while also holding true to Scripture. Heather has covered this book in prayer and research and humbly tells this fictionalized account that will have you longing for the day we meet Jesus face to face. You’ll find yourself immersed in Jesus’ time on earth and walking through the heartbreak, healing, and hope of his earliest disciples. I feel that Joanna’s story is one that we can all relate with—are we truly brave enough to follow Jesus? And the most beautiful part is to see how Jesus meets Joanna (and us) right where we are. If you want to be challenged to dig into scripture and to imagine what life may have been like during Jesus time on earth, I highly recommend picking up this book!

PS - there’s also beautiful family relationship, friendship, and a little romance 😍

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just a note: While this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone! I’d recommend it whether or not you’ve read the first book Up from Dust, but also, you should read the first because it was one of my top 2 from 2024. Before the King just might be my favorite from 2025!

“How did he always do this? He seemed to know exactly where I was and refused to let me stay there.” 🥹

Last year, I read the first book in Heather Kaufman’s “Women of the Way” series called Up from Dust. This story followed Mary and Martha, with an emphasis on Martha.

I knew after reading one book that I needed to give Kaufman another shot, so I was excited to pick up Before the King, which follows Joanna’s story.

Not much is known about Joanna. In fact, there are only two places in scripture where she is mentioned. With not much to go on, but with much research and prayer, Kaufman was able to craft a beautiful, endearing story of faith, hope, truth, and love.

Joanna’s character captivated me. Seeing her honest struggles, her awareness of the goodness of God, and her deepening faith from childhood to adulthood was powerful. While we don’t know exactly what her real life looked like, I think Kaufman did a phenomenal job of pulling together what we know from history and scripture to share a story I believe will lead many to dive deeper into the Word and heart of God.

Biblical fiction is my favorite genre. It helps me better understand customs and daily life during Biblical times. Heather Kaufman is one of my favorite authors in this genre. This is book 2 in a series. I gave 5 stars to the first one and have pre ordered the third one. This author writes with enthusiasm and her descriptions are amazing. I can picture the story unfolding in my mind’s eye. It also gave me plenty to reflect upon. She certainly does her research. Enjoy. I’m really looking forward to the third one. These books can be enjoyed as stand alones, too. These are books I will listen to several more times in the future.

“We were never meant to live under the tyranny of fear and grief.”

This story was exquisite!

"Before The King" is about Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and what her life might have been like. While "Before The King" and "The Chosen" tv series are both works of fiction, they present possibilities and situations that real-life Joanna may have faced while discovering and following Jesus. Personally, the angle of Joanna that the author wrote in "Before The King" is my favorite fictional depiction of her thus far.

I truly enjoyed this book, and it honestly left me speechless. I like when books do that, and when I go to review them I'm just like, "Y'all need to read this. End of story." :)

"I am an ordinary woman whom God chose to put in extraordinary places." This quote near the beginning of the story grabbed my attention and did not let go until the last page was read.

Heather Kauffman has crafted a beautifully written story that captured my imagination and heart. Readers will follow Joanna's journey of faith, one that will break their hearts then put it back together again as she is witness to the last days of Jesus' ministry on Earth.

In Before the King, Joanna witnesses several horrific events, questioning the presence of God amidst the suffering, uncertain that he cares for individuals. Having seen the strong faith her sister holds, she seeks answers.

Ms. Kauffman's vivid prose brought the Biblical story to life. Joanna's path eventually crosses that of Jesus and she is witness to his ministry. Her journey of faith is one of grace and forgiveness.

Joanna is only mentioned a couple of times in the Bible, yet the author does not take away from the truths of the Bible. She merely pens a story of what might have been, allowing her readers to grasp the miracle of Jesus' time on Earth, allowing them to grasp the truths that are relevant regardless of time or place. Highly recommend to readers of Biblical fiction.

"Lukewarm loyalty is worse than no loyalty at all."

When I saw this cover and read the description, I knew I wanted to be all-in on this book. I'm a big fan of Christian fiction as well as non-fiction Christian books and was so excited to pick this one up. Heather Kaufman is a new-to-me author and I had no idea what to expect going into this book.

Let me tell you: IT WAS EVERYTHING!

If you are a fan of The Chosen, enjoy learning about Christ's time on earth, love learning about historical eras, time periods and customs--then I think you would absolutely LOVE this book.

I've read quite a few books surrounding the Life of the Savior (through fiction historical texts and straight from the bible) and I love being able to feel transported to that time. What really caught me by surprise in this particular book was that the main character was the daughter of a Sadducee. If you're unfamiliar with type of religious leader it's one who doesn't believe in eternal life. It gave such an interesting perspective and gave so much insight into things I didn't know or had considered.

'Following Jesus came with a cost.'

This book is a complete journey and one I wanted to follow along with every step of the way. The romance was beautiful and my heart was an emotional mess through it all (in a good way). I loved that this author told an almost untold story of Joanna--I loved seeing what might have been with her. If you aren't already a huge fan of John the Baptist, I think you will be after finishing this one. The scenes involving him were incredibly impactful. It's always a testimony builder to feel surrounded by the Savior.

I can't recommend this one enough to my Christian readers...especially if you like The Chosen--it's a MUST READ!

The writing is beautiful and I can't wait to see what this author writes next. I loved her writing style and will absolutely be picking up any future books!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content/Trigger: Life of Christ (following his persecution and ultimately his crucifixion), beheading of John the Baptist mentioned-not descriptive. Redemption/Joy/Forgiveness, death of a loved one, mention of seizures and mild violence. Romance-kisses only and there is a marriage of convenience turned more between the main characters (no explicit details of intimacy).

Heather Kaufman’s Before the King offers a thoughtful portrayal of Joanna, a woman named only twice in Scripture, as she navigates the complexities of faith, identity, and sacrifice during the ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ. This second book in the Women of the Way series builds on the author’s reputation for weaving biblical accounts into richly imagined narratives that remain reverent and historically grounded.

Joanna’s place in Herod’s court highlights the tension between the allure of power and the transformative message of Jesus. Her marriage to Chuza is portrayed with nuance, emphasizing mutual respect while acknowledging the strain of secrets. Joanna’s interactions with the disciples and her growing allegiance to Christ provide a unique lens into the challenges faced by early followers navigating societal constraints.

Themes of faith in uncertainty, wrestling with God’s silence, and learning to trust His sovereignty appear throughout the book. These moments come to life through Joanna’s reflections on her sister Dalia’s courage and her struggle to accept Christ’s mercy after years of loss and shame.

Set during one of history’s most pivotal periods, the novel remains deeply personal, focusing on Joanna’s choices and their eternal significance. The author’s respect for Scripture and skill in crafting relatable characters make this book a strong addition to biblical fiction.

This is an excellent choice for book clubs, offering opportunities to discuss faith, relationships, and the cost of discipleship. Kaufman has earned her place among the genre’s top authors, and I eagerly await what she writes next.

This was my first read by this author and I thought it was great! I love the writing style and how it flows so well and easy to read. I was captivated from the beginning and didn’t want to stop reading. I finished in a day, so you know it’s good. This is Joanna’s story and since we don’t know that much about her, this gives the author a lot of freedom to make up a backstory/story. I really liked the story, and how there was a love story involved. I loved Joanna and I also loved that her husband Chuza was shown in a positive way. I also enjoyed seeing things Jesus did through the perspective of Joanna. Overall I thought this was an amazing Biblical fiction story and I definitely recommend!

Wow! I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could. It's extraordinary! My heart was touched on such a deep level; I will be pondering this book for a while. I was immediately transported to Israel at the time when Jesus was just beginning his ministry.

The main characters are complicated people. They are people with hopes and dreams. Dreams that come at a high price. I connected the most with Joanna. Her life is one of loneliness. She yearns to have a deeper faith in God. She soon finds a community among Jesus's disciples that heal her heart. Dalia is sweet and wise. Her affliction helps her cling to the Lord. Chuza has built high walls around his heart, but he shows that he can be honorable and compassionate.

The parts of the book that touched me the most were the ones involving Jesus. What a privilege for those who talked and walked with Him! To see the miracles of healing and become a part of His life. His death was not the end, for He is risen!

I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

**side note. This is the second book that I've read by Heather Kaufman. Her writing is not just "entertainment " but also thought-provoking and insightful. I actually felt Jesus speaking to me through this story.

Evocative and powerful. "Before the King" by Heather Kaufman is a page-turning novel, brimming with political suspense, family secrets, and palatial intrigue.

Thoughtfully researched and exquisitely crafted, this Biblical fiction novel features a marriage of convenience romance full of tender yearning, respectful chronic illness and disability representation, and poignant themes of faith.

Kaufman's lyrical prose give readers an immersive experience, heightened by metaphoric imagery and heart-stirring emotion. Several times, I found myself re-reading passages because I wanted to linger in the story a little while longer. Needed to let the truths, so beautifully conveyed, sink deep into my heart.

If you're looking for a fictional narrative that will deepen your love for God's Word, "Before the King" is a must read!

This story was truly wonderful, transporting me to a different time and place. I felt like I was actually there, witnessing events through Joanna’s eyes, and feeling all her emotions.

She has a lot of interactions with people mentioned in the Bible — John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Herod, and most notably, Jesus Christ. These are obviously fictional encounters, and yet they felt very believable and authentic. Her interactions with Jesus were especially moving and powerful.

The story is so immersive and vividly told that I couldn’t put it down. The writing was excellent, with great attention to accuracy and detail. I loved the themes of hope, belief, faith, and acceptance. I especially loved Joanna and her growth, faith, courage, and commitment to her beliefs.

This is a beautiful and thought provoking story. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves Biblical fiction or fans of The Chosen.

Before the King, by Heather Kaufman, is a brilliant biblical fiction novel that immerses readers in the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. The novel is told through the eyes of Joanna, a beautiful yet resilient woman whose life is changed through horrific events. Through this character, the author weaves a tale exploring doubt and confusion about life, love, God, and why He allows suffering.

Her sister, Dalia, struggles with what can only be described as epilepsy. This disease was often viewed as demon possession. Dalia’s parents go to extreme lengths to hide their daughter from the prying eyes of King Herod’s court and the Sanhedrin, much to the distress of Joanna.

Yet, Dalia’s faith in God and her unwavering love and trust in Him vibrate throughout the pages of this book. It is this faith that her sister Joanna will look to as she faces struggles in the years ahead.

Kaufman excels at creating vivid and sensory descriptions that place you in the heart of the Holy Land. But it is her ability to get inside her characters that drive this story. I felt like God had opened a window to the past and said, “This happened. Use it for your story.” This is how real this story felt.

Pulled from the pages of history, the secondary characters, from King Herod to the disciples to Jesus Himself, created a cornucopia of feelings that will live within me for quite some time. The author’s understanding of the human soul with all its foibles was refreshing.

But the one thing that stood out most for me in this book was how lovingly she wrote about Jesus and His interactions with others. I cannot say what happened (spoilers) but when healing was offered to a certain character, this entire scene had my heart racing and crying because I am disabled. The author’s description of this moment in time reflected everything my heart desired and everything I questioned about my faith and whether I would ever be healed. Well done, Ms. Kaufman! You have given me hope.

This book is compelling and captivating, and will never let you go. I highly recommend it!

I find I’m struggling to put into words how much I loved “Before the King.” I feel as though my own words are inadequate and won’t do justice to this heart rendering story. Biblical fiction is my favorite genre as it often convicts me and helps me learn and grow in my own faith, Kaufman did just that through her beautifully crafted story of Johanna. Kaufman poured her heart into Joanna’s story and it flowed straight from the pages into the readers heart and mind. From garden to garden, and everything she experienced between, Johanna’s story blossomed and captured my heart. I cried so many times through the heartache and joys she experienced. Watching her find healing inwardly and physically, watching her struggle in faith and grow in faith, and watching her find forgiveness and give forgiveness was the greatest joy. My expectations for “Before the King” were extremely high after reading “Up from Dust,” and H. Kaufman far surpassed every expectation I had and has left me pondering this story from a Biblical sense even more so.

I enjoyed this Women of the Way Book #2 so very much. I could relate to the characters and their struggles. Each female and male character had an unique problem that only faith in Christ could solve.

It was just a simple pure delight to read of Jesus and his miracles and love for us, sobering to experience his crucifixion, and hopefyl to partake in his resurrection. Once again I felt like the romance wasn't the main plot point and was beautifully written.

At the end, I actually had to make sure it was the end as I was looking forward to the story continuing.

The author did a wonderful job being creative to a Biblical story yet staying true to it's Word.

“Sometimes we have to choose happiness, and even then . . . we often have to wait for it. We aren’t always able to harvest happiness immediately, but we can nurture it while it grows.”

This is my first book by Heather Kaufman and I am floored. I can see now why she’s the newest acclaimed voice in Biblical fiction. I love Biblical fiction but tend to stay away from books that use creative license with Jesus’ words. I was hesitant to pick up this book but I’m glad I read it. There was only a bit of creative reimagining of Jesus’ words in the book when He spoke - most were straight from the Bible. The way the author described Jesus’ ministry through Joanna’s experience was incredibly tangible and real. I loved watching Joanna grow up and loved experiencing Jewish culture and Herod’s court during Jesus’ time.

Joanna’s first person voice was simply beautiful. Her sorrows, fears, regrets, failures, hopes, and dreams melded to create a beautiful woman, inside and out. Her generosity and tenacity were her best qualities. Chuza was an amazing hero, so steadfast, faithful, calm, intelligent, compassionate, and loving. Though their marriage of convenience, their friendship, then finally romance were fantastic, the real plot of the story was about Jesus’ sacrifice and gift. How He heals broken relationships, bodies, hearts and souls was at the center of the story. It was truly amazing to relive His healings, teachings, death and resurrection through Joanna and Chuza’s imagined lives.

If you love Biblical fiction, this book is an absolute must-read. Heather Kaufman has gained another fan!

Oh my goodness. This book truly left a profound mark on my heart! Joanna’s journey resonates deeply with so many of us as she struggles to surrender her pain and disappointment into the embrace of Jesus’s love and healing. The narrative is absolutely captivating, pulling readers into the rich tapestry of Jesus’s ministry on earth, all seen through the eyes of a young woman in the perilous world of Herod's court.

Each encounter between Jesus and Joanna had me in tears, and I was absolutely amazed by how Heather breathed life into the biblical narrative in such a vivid way.

Even though this is the second book in the Women of the Way series, it stands strong on its own. This is a must read!

This was such a good book and a really insightful look into the culture and politics of this time in biblical history. While we don't know much about Joanna from the Bible (as she is only mentioned in a couple of verses in Luke), the aspects of her life explored here are based on what can be guessed at with a fair amount of confidence (like the fact that her family were likely Sadducees), and the rest is based on what life was like for many people at this point in time--the prejudices people faced, the political and cultural restrictions or threats they faced, and so on. As long as you go into this book taking the "facts" about Joanna's life mostly with a grain of salt, this book can give you great insight into the lives of the Jewish people living in Israel during this time.

Content:
• Drugs and Alcohol – some mentions of people drinking wine with meals, one mention of a man being drunk, one mention of a man appearing to be drunk
• Sexual Content – some marital intimacy (kissing, cuddling, etc., no open door scenes or even fade to black), married couple seen in bed together (nothing sexual)
• Violence – attack by a zealot group; mentions of young men being killed and their blood mixed with a pagan sacrifice, a beheading, and other executions (none of these happen on page); Jesus seen being mocked and beaten; mentions of His crucifixion
• Themes – prejudice against those who have a disability, death and grief

I read Heather's first Biblical fiction book, Up from Dust, and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to read this next one.

Joanna's story was heartbreaking, yet full of themes of redemption, healing, and hope. I really enjoyed this book as well!

The reason I gave it four stars is because it felt like there were a few threads of the story left unresolved. It just fell flat in a few areas. ☺️ Just personal preference.

This book is such a beautiful reminder of the joy that God can rise up from tragedy. I have always loved Biblical fiction and this series has found a special place in my heart.

Joanna and Dalia moved me greatly. I absolutely loved Dalia’s faith and her trust in the Lord despite her struggles and heartbreaking circumstances. Joanna’s character was so well written and the way that she trusted and believed in Jesus despite the pressure from the people around her inspired me greatly.

I highly recommend this moving novel for fans of Biblical fiction! It moved me and inspired me to continue trusting in the Lord despite difficult and challenging circumstances.

Before I gush about this book, you need to know something about me (if you don’t already know it). I’m super picky about Biblical era fiction and there are only a few authors of this genre that I do read, a total of which I can count on one hand. I regret that I haven’t read the first book in this series yet (I will!) but with Before The King Heather Kaufman now has a firm spot on my short list of Biblical fiction authors I will read & highly recommend.

“After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.” (Luke 8:1-3)

Other than telling us that Joanna was also one of the women who first discovered that Jesus had risen from the dead, Scripture is quiet about her beyond the above verses. But Luke nevertheless felt her worthy of mentioning by name more than once, so Heather Kaufman uses careful research, study, and creativity to breathe life and personality and backstory into the layers that Luke left up to our imagination. As I came to know this fleshed-out version of Joanna, I saw her as less of a nebulous name and more as she was – a real person with feelings, dreams, family dynamics, friendships, pain, joy, sorrow, fear, attraction, and love just like me. In so doing, I also saw my own shortcomings more clearly and the tenderness of Jesus more acutely, as well as gaining a new perspective on the political climate of the time and the power of a simple invitation – ‘come and see’.

Bottom Line: Before the King by Heather Kaufman paints a touching picture of a life changed by an encounter with Jesus. The author’s engaging prose and multidimensional characters kept me absorbed in the story, my heart breaking and falling in love and rejoicing right along with Joanna’s. This thoughtful imagining of the kind of layered backstory (including a swoony, slow burn, marriage of convenience) that might have led this Biblical figure (and her Gentile husband) to Jesus wrapped around me like a comforting quilt, giving voice to questions that I’ve asked more over the last few years than ever before… and pointing me lovingly to the reminder that God is ever close – even when we can’t see His hand – and that we can rest in His immense love for us – even when we don’t see the answer we want. A compelling novel for fans of Tessa Afshar, Connilyn Cossette, and Mesu Andrews!

Just like the first book in this series, "Before the King" immerses the reader in an engaging storyline, ancient contexts, and reflective themes. Right from the start, my heart was invested! We get to live in the political court of Herod, Joanna's journey of faith & love, and the ministry and final years of Yeshua/Jesus. I also loved getting to hang out with the disciples! Also, Chuza is such an interesting character and it was fascinating to see him attempt to balance his duty to the king, his relationship with Joanna, and his past...
There are a few plot lines I would have liked to see resolved at the end, but I love that the overall conlusion was full of hope and promise!
You can clearly tell that Heather takes Scripture seriously and I appreciated all her comments in the Author's Note. I will definitely be reading book 3 when it comes out next year!!

Some of my favorite non-spoilery quotes:

"What others think of me has no bearing on who I am... what people think changes all the time. What is true never changes."

"He is a God who keeps his word. When He makes a promise, He stands by it. The faithfulness of your God is what makes your people distinct. Surely you can find rest in His presence, no matter where you go."

"Faith is founded on Adonai Himself and not on the condition that He act in a certain way at a certain time."

"But you must learn to live your life, Jojo. It's the one God gave you. You have to find a way to live it."

"Didn't I tell you that I've never aspired to be like most men? I will not put you aside. You expect to be used and discarded, but I will not do that to you, Joanna."

If you want to read another story about Joanna, I also recommend the Court of the Tetrarch trilogy by Katrina Hamel.

*Mahalo to Netgalley and Bethany House Publishing for an advanced reader's e-book copy. All opinions are my own.
