They are waiting for death. He is waiting to kill them. In May 2020, fourteen-year-old Andrew Golding went out for a walk following a row with his mum. He was never seen again.
Four years later, when the press discovers police errors in Andrew Golding's case, DI Ridpath is called in to investigate.
As Ridpath delves into the case, he slowly discovers something much bigger and far more brutal than he ever expected – a murderer from the past who threatens his career and the lives of those close to him. Can he unravel the secrets before the killer strikes again?
The latest tense and gripping DI Ridpath thriller set in Manchester. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Damien Boyd.
Martin has spent most of his adult life writing in one form or another. He has spent 25 years of his life working outside the North of England. In London, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok and Shanghai. He writes three series; the Danilov books set in 1930s Shanghai. The genealogical mysteries of Jayne Sinclair and the contemporary crime cases of DI Ridpath set in Manchester. When he's not writing, he splits his time between the UK and Asia, taking pleasure in playing with his daughter, practicing downhill ironing, single-handedly solving the problem of the French wine lake and wishing he were George Clooney.
May 2020 - Is there an ‘Angel (or devil) of Death’ at work in Manchester?? In the same month, fourteen year old Andrew Golding disappears and he has now been missing for the last four years. After a press article ridiculing the police efforts to locate him, DCI Steve Carruthers of Manchester MIT asks Ridpath to investigate. The more he digs the more connections seem to appear and what he uncovers is huge. It appears that it all may link back to a blast from Ridpath’s past, someone he sincerely hopes to never hear of again. Can the team use all their ingenuity, hard work and technology to stop what is at work in ‘The Rainy City’? Oh, it’s also worth mentioning that Ridpath’s daughter Eve is now a teenager and acting it. He’s sure got a lot on his plate.
This is a series I’ve grown fond of over the last few years, they’re always reliable and well thought out reads with a good plot line that holds my interest throughout. The characters are terrific, Ridpath is a one off, he’s been through a lot and his life isn’t easy. He can be judgy and a bit cerebral but he’s less of a loner than he used to be, though his mind is always in overdrive. He’s therefore a very interesting central protagonist who is surrounded by other good characters such as Eve, Mrs. Challinor at the coroners office (and there’s a good storyline there too), DS Emily Parkinson and Chrissy Wright, the civilian researcher. There’s a new character in DC Helen Shipton, hmmm, the jury is out on her as she’s not a team player but Ridpath and Carruthers have sure got her number. Glaswegian Carruthers is terrific, he’s much less formal than the old DCI, he tells it how it is, he’s very funny and his dialogue is always colourful.
The separate plot strands flow well making you want to comprehend what’s going on. There are just too many coincidences but the team start to join the dots and see the bigger picture. There’s a deep conspiracy at work and wickedness that beggars belief and one character who has revenge on their agenda sending icy chills down the spine. It builds well, it starts to come together in a tense and exciting conclusion which is full of danger. At one point my heart sinks but all’s well that ends well.
Overall, this is another good addition to the long running series and I hope that it will continue on!
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Canelo for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Another brilliant crime thriller from MJ Lee. Ridpath is asked to lead on a case where a teenage boy has been missing for several years. It’s clear when Ridpath and the team look back at the initial investigation, that a thorough job was not carried out in searching for him. With Mrs Challinor still in a coma, Montague is causing mayhem in the Coroner’s office with his controlling manner. He shows Ridpath a letter from a local care home claiming that its residents are being killed and Ridpath is concerned. The care home also comes up as part of the missing boy investigation so Ridpath is determined to find out what’s going on. This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
would like to thank netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this awesome book
D.I Ridpath is back in his most frustating case ever....
ridpath is at odds with the coroner, the one in place whilst mrs challinor is in a coma and has been for quite a few months.... the prognosis isnt good if she doesnt wake up soon
in the mean time ridpath has been tasked with finding a misper... a young teenager went missing 4 years ago and nothing has been heard from him since... but his mom has kept on at the authorities for years and this time the papers have done a brilliant write up that has guilted the higher ups to investigate
and ridpath is that person... a folly of errors await ridpath as he starts his investigation
but things start to unravel when the person he put away has escaped and what ever is in store for ridpath is about to get nasty
what an edge of the seat book this one was... ridpath series is always a good series to get into and this book has plenty of high energy stress levels to reach everyone
i for one cant wait for the next book in this series to see what happens next..
DI Ridpath is back & working on a cold case. In May 2020, fourteen-year-old Andrew Golding went out for a walk during the height of the Covid lockdown & was never seen again. Ridpath finds that the investigation was rather shoddy (to say the least), & it all seems linked in some way to unusual deaths at a local care home, but even he is not anticipating where the case will lead him. Meanwhile Coroner, Margaret Challinor, is still in a coma following the attack on her. Her replacement is proving to a bit of a martinet & seems to be out to get rid off all the current staff including Ridpath.
I really do enjoy reading this series. The author has created some great characters that the reader can get to know & become invested in what happens to them, whilst the plots are well planned out & executed. I thought this one was a little bit slow at the start, but it built up to a tense, fast-paced ending. Great series that maintains a high standard.
My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Canelo, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "What The Dead Want', the 10th book in the immensely thrilling DI Ridpath series by M J Lee. Welcome to another highly suspenseful and ultimately satisfying book in the DI Ridpath series, which I have read from the first book until this, the upcoming instalment in the series. DI Ridpath not only is an Detective Inspector with the Met, but he's also seconded to the Coroner's office, where cases quite often overlap. MJ Lee has created a great cast of characters, most of whom have been with us from the very beginning and many of whom have had integral parts to play in the various cases. This one involves a number of 'working parts' that seem to be totally unrelated, but all of which involve Ridpath: the cold case of a missing 14-year-old boy who disappeared at the height of the COVID epidemic, but whose case seems to have been shoddily investigated; a letter is sent to the current Coroner stating that deaths at a seniors' home might not be what they seem; and The Beast of Manchester - Harold Lardner whom Ridpath was instrumental in sending to prison - seems to be making waves again. Whenever there's a new book in this series about to be published, I make it my mission to read and review, and this one is no exception. And I'm glad I did. This one has everything: mysteries, deaths, suspense, some humour, personalities that are impossible to forget, redemption..... Highly, highly recommended. Could be read as a standalone, but really, do yourself a favour and get to the whole series.
Another fabulous instalment in this truly wonderful high end police procedural series. Ridpath is in a class of his own as far as characters are concerned, highly likeable and believable as he continues to balance his work and his daughter. Brilliantly plotted and executed and very hard to put down, MJ Lee once again continues to entice the reader into the heart of Greater Manchester policing and the coroners office. A fantastic climax to the book that has you on the edge of your seat holding your breath. Really hard to pick any faults with this. A cracking 5⭐️read
This had so much to the story that I don’t think I was prepared for what all I was going to read and I loved it. We had great characters in this story and loved the little bits of the bad persons side. This was twisted so so twisted and the whole time I was trying to piece things together because this one had me thinking so much. Great job M J Lee on this one and many more!
After reading books 1-9 in this series with interest and pleasure, lots of other books came my way so I missed out on #10. But since I was in need of something not too heavy, something familiar, I bought this one and read it in a few short days. By now I sure don’t have to give a summary of the story here. I just want to say that this series and its author is fast becoming a favourite of mine. You know what you get but at the same time not all stories are alike and there is a lot going on in the lives of Ridpath, his family and his coworkers. Enough to keep me interested. The characters deepen with almost every new book in the series and there are some unexpected plot twists – for good or for bad. I’m eagerly awaiting What the Dark Whispers, to be published in July 2025.
When a fourteen-year-old boy disappears without trace, you'd hope the police would pull out all the stops to find him. Unfortunately, when Andrew Golding did just that, the response was half-hearted at best. Now, four years later, DI Ridpath, an MIT detective and investigator for the local coroner's office, has been tasked with discovering what happened to Andy and why.
Working two jobs has never been simple for Ridpath, but since the attack on his former boss, it's become far harder. When a link between Andrew's disappearance and information sent to the coroner himself is discovered, the two investigations take a far darker turn than anyone realises. With time rapidly running out, Ridpath receives devastating news, which threatens to destroy everything important to him unless, once again, he can work out the ultimate goal of a desperate killer.
Book ten in M.J. Lee’s excellent series delivers everything anyone could possibly want from a tension filled thriller and then some! Ridpath is one of my favourite main protagonists, and once again, he is put through the emotional wringer as he just tries to go about his business. I really enjoyed the angst between him and his teenage daughter, Eve, and the snotty coroner was just as awful and annoyingly brilliant as I remembered. However, it was the way events were seemingly manipulated from afar, which was the main reason I didn't want to finish this book while simultaneously needing to know how it ended right now! I absolutely wasn't disappointed.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers Hera/Canelo, but the opinions expressed are my own. I have been lucky enough to read some excellent books recently, and this is right up there with the best of them. Highly recommended.
Thrilling, fast paced, page turner. These are all words that describe this book by MJ Lee.
DI Ridpath's dedication to solving cases is commendable and when there seems to be more questions than answers regarding the case he is working on, it is this zeal that makes him succeed, although almost at a personal cost.
Will definitely not be the last Ridpath book I'll be reading 😁
DI Ridpath is back. Still wearing two hats and trying to spend more time with his daughter. He is soon tasked with taking a second look at an unsolved cold case. A 14-year-old boy, Andrew, vanished four years ago. What he discovers is a rather poor initial investigation. Meanwhile, a letter is sent to the coroner’s office that raises Ridpath's alert system. Is someone killing the residents of a care home? Coincidentally the one where Andrew’s grandmother resided? Are these two seemingly dissimilar cases related and if they are can Ridpath figure them out before there are more deaths. Always an enjoyable read, this is the 10th book in the series. Ridpath has been through a lot in the prior books, and it doesn’t look like his luck is changing. I hated every time I had to put this book down. I just wanted to know if the cases were connected and how. I did not manage to figure either one out before the author reveals! This book will be published at the end of June and I’m already eagerly awaiting the next book.

Another fantastic read in the Ridpath series. This is the tenth book in the series and they just keep getting better and better. Well written gritty police investigation. Thankfully, Ridpath's new DCI Carruthers is someone he can work with and is not afraid to get stuck in. I love all the characters in this series. They are all well fleshed out so you feel as though you know them. The finale is a humdinger and has you on the edge of your seat. I wont give away any spoilers, suffice to say it will keep you turning the pages. Sadly I've come to the end of this wonderful series and now have to wait for the next one. Looking forward to book 11.
What the Dead Want is another brilliant crime thriller with DI Ridpath. When tasked with opening a cold case into a missing fourteen year old boy from 4 years previously a big can of worms is opened leading to the discovery of some shocking occurrences. Juggling home life as a single parent and losing his mentor Mrs Challinor at the coroners office, unearthing a larger than normal amount of deaths at an elderly care home and criminal psychopath from his past is all making his life rather frenetic. With some shocking revelations and powerful performances from all characters involved this is a riveting exciting read with a finale that has your heart pounding. Yet again Mr Lee has written a book that is immensely thrilling and entertaining. My thanks to netgalley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly
Those who know me well, will know that MJ Lee’s DI Ridpath series is one of my absolute favourites, and I await eagerly a new installment each year. To be honest this is a series I wish I could erase from my memory and read fresh again all in one go, that’s 10 books, its so good!
To be able to write a 10 book series is no mean feat, and to keep each book fresh is probably even harder as a write, but MJ Lee doesn’t seem to have any issues with this. In What The Dead Want we encounter a cold case missing person, a murderer from the past and an absolutely thrilling ending. Add to that the life of some of the main cast of characters like Mrs Challenor ( The Coroner ) and the staff at the Coroner’s office, and you get an in-depth story with several subplots, which I love.
One of my bug bears are authors who don’t write Police Procedurals with any realism ( being an ex Police civvy it rankles!) but there’s never a problem in the DI Ridpath novels, the Policing side is realistic and gritty, and that’s one of the main reasons I love reading this series.
My rating is another 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read (as I think all the previous 9 have been) and a real page-turner that will keep you gripped until the end. Please write faster Mr Lee as I adore this series, one of the best around.
Four years ago a fourteen-year old boy disappeared but COVIS and incompetence meant his case was not solved. His mother has never given up and her campaigning has caused the case to be reopened by MIT. Meanwhile Ridpath is balancing the demands of MIT and the Coroner's team alongside his daughter, Eve, who is a demanding teenager. As clues lead to a local care home, Ridpath realises that there may be a familiar person in control. This is a solid series of books and this is a really strong installation. Several returning characters are to the fore here, Mrs Challinor recovering in hospital and more importantly Dr Lardner. There are some really important issues developed in the narrative, particularly around the care of the elderly post-Covid, and the plot is clever and satisfying.
It’s so good to read about Ridpath they are all fantastic books. The investigation is about a 14 year old boy who went missing 4 years ago Ridpath has been asked to reopen the case as there were a lot of errors by the Police at that time. A local care home keeps coming up as there have been too many residents dying and it’s very suspicious as everything is not as it seems.
Thanks to Netgalley for and advance review copy. This is the tenth DI Ridpath book and it’s lovely to revisit the cast of characters. Eve is growing up, Sophia is getting married, Mrs Challinor is absent as the coroner and is missed. The social issue at the background, aged care during COVID is interesting too. If you like character driver police procedurals I recommend this series.
Another stonker from MJ Lee. I’ve been addicted to this series since I came across book 1 a couple of years ago. I’ve been on a binge ever since - I had to WAIT for #10, as I’d caught up ;-) They’re fairly short books, but intense/tense/exciting. “Small but perfectly formed”, as Terry Wogan used to say. It’s fair to say I’m a fan!
Another fantastic story, gripping and a book i personally couldn’t put down. Credit due to MJ Lee there isn’t many authors out there that get me so into a book that I don’t do anything but read until it’s finished. Keep them coming please. Highly recommend all 10 books.
I am sure I have somewhere read some of this series but to be honest they did not stand out, this book on the other hand was brilliant. The plot the characters, the villain (who I presume is the subject of an earlier novel, as in his capture.) There are some surprises and shocks you don't see coming, but Ridpath , something of a curmudgeon and humourless in my view is a believable, if not complex character. A good read.
I have read all ten of these books and would recommend every one of them. Very clever author each book a very individual story but each one reflected back to the previous lives of the characters. A brilliantly clever solution joining this final book back to the first . I love Ridpath great character feel I would know him if We passed on the street. Well done MJ Lee.
DI Ridpath gets assigned a new case, this is a cold case of a missing teen boy who went missing on 22nd May 2022. Now in May 2024, Ridpath has to solve the case with so many obstacles thrown his way whilst also being a single Dad to his teenage daughter.
This book had me guessing until the end with so many twists and turns that I just couldn't figure it out. Gripped me from the very beginning and is one that I would highly recommend.
