A thrilling, fast-paced suspense novel for fans of Jack Carr, Ryan Steck, and Kyle MillsPerfect for fans of high-stakes geopolitical thrillers full of heart-racing actionThe last book in the Marcus Ryker series by New York Times bestselling author Joel C. Rosenberg
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name. Note: This is a different person than the fantasy author, Joel Rosenberg
Joel C. Rosenberg is the founder of The Joshua Fund and the New York Times best-selling author of THE LAST JIHAD (2002), THE LAST DAYS (2003), THE EZEKIEL OPTION (2005), THE COPPER SCROLL (2006), EPICENTER (2006) and DEAD HEAT (2008) with more than 1.5 million copies in print. THE EZEKIEL OPTION was named by the ECPA as the Gold Medallion winner of the "Best Novel of 2006." Joel, an evangelical Christian whose mother is Gentile and whose father is from an Orthodox Jewish background, previously worked with several U.S. and Israeli leaders, including Steve Forbes, former Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Natan Sharansky, and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He has been interviewed on hundreds of radio and TV shows. He and his wife have four sons and live near Washington, DC.
This new-to-me author kept me reading past my bedtime with this high-stakes geopolitical thriller. I know what you’re thinking…why did she start at the final book in the series?! It was an oversight. I was swept in by the hype, was curious about this popular author, hadn’t read a geopolitical thriller in a long time, and wanted to see if the idea of the fate of many in the hands of a few could be carried out well enough to hold my attention. It was. In spades.
His main character, Ryker, must stop a terror network before it brings the world to the brink of nuclear war. The leaders of Communist China have been plotting to invade Taiwan to undermine America’s power in the Pacific. Stuff ripped from current headlines, right?!
This thrilling and quick-paced plot includes releasing a virus, secret invasion plans, counterterrorism negotiations, and secret state-of-the-art labs. Lots is going on and at a fast pace; I can see why this series is so popular. I came into this series at the final book and am very certain that this put me at a big disadvantage; however, it didn’t hamper my enjoyment of a fantastic story by an accomplished author. I’ll be going back to investigate Ryker’s early days leading up to this conclusion.
I was gifted this copy by Tyndale House Publishers and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Joel C. Rosenberg, and Tyndale House Publishers for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Back for another great novel by Joel C. Rosenberg, which happens to be the final installment of his Marcus Ryker series, I expected a great deal. Rosenberg has long been able to captivate me with his well-paced novels, usually predicting geo-political events before they ever transpire. In this piece, Ryker is still chasing down a powerful terror cell, though there is more that should worry the new US Administration. China is flexing its muscle once again, seeking to make a play for a long desired piece of territory, with plans to cripple anyone who stands in their way. The tensions are high and Marcus Ryker will have to act swiftly if he wants to save the Pacific Theatre, as well as the American homeland he has vowed to serve. Rosenberg impresses once more with this stellar thriller!
After a significant terrorist attack in Chicago the year before, America is on edge and wondering when the other shoe might drop. Their elite CIA operative, Marcus Ryker, has been chasing down the head of a terror cell for years, never quite catching up to him. As Abu Nakba remains at large, all eyes are on what might happen next. During a mission to capture him, Ryker discovers some terrifying intel, but things go awry and an explosion rocks a Pakistani city. No Abu Nakba and only chilling news to share with the White House.
While new US President Carlos Hernandez is trying to hash out a deal with the Chinese, news of the explosion reaches Washington. While the Americans remain coy, they are not fooling their counterparts. China has a plan of their own to secure their dominance in the Pacific region by taking control of Taiwan, all while the Americans chase their tail handling this terror concern and a new biological threat that is sure to send mass panic across the country.
Ryker will have to find a way to neutralise the terror threat and keep China from enacting its plan, all while the clock is ticking on his own future. There is no time to waste in this stunning conclusion to the Marcus Ryker series. Joel C. Rosenberg is at the top of his game once more!
I have long enjoyed the political thrillers that Joel C. Rosenberg puts together. Not only are they entertaining, but have an element of realism based on current geo-political situations around the globe. A strong narrative helps guide things along and keeps the reader guessing where things might be headed. Short chapters propel the reader to keep reading so as to discover the truth before putting the book down. Well-developed characters offer insights and flavour the larger story effectively. I enjoy the many plot twists and surprises based on potential events that Rosenberg is able to lay at the reader’s feet, never running out of ways to turn the story on its head. I am eager to see what Rosenberg has in store for readers next, but I will be patiently waiting.
Kudos, Mr. Rosenberg, for a strong conclusion to another great series!
Marcus Ryker returns to fight the Kairos in The Beijing Betrayal by Joel C. Rosenberg. Some say this will be the last in this series but we will see. This book has a pace that defies gravity and it's well written with a good storyline although I am puzzled by the various weapons that changes name in the book. I also found the ending chapters a bit confusing. I have had a good time reading my way through this series and will recommend it because it's not the same as many others written nowadays. I thank Tyndale Fiction and Edelweiss for supplying me with this advance copy.
I’ve been enjoying Christian fiction for over four decades. This book had the best, light faith content of all of them. Mr. Rosenberg’s books are always well researched and detailed. The fire fight scenes are so intense it felt as if I was right there. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, but this one was my favorite. Highly recommend the series or any of this author’s books. The romance was sweet, clean and profound. This book had it ALL for me. George Guidall is one of my two favorite narrators. Outstanding performance as always. This is a series I will enjoy again.
I was blessed with an audio ARC of this book, and my opinions are truly my own and unbiased.
I typically don't love the last of anything: books, shows, movies, etc. Quite often--if you are being honest--they suck. Thankfully, The Beijing Betarayl is the exception rather than the rule. And The Beijing Betrayal might be the best of the lot. Joel Rosenberg has an uncanny ability to write events into existence. I'm unsure if I'm excited about what he has planned next or terrified.
Thanks to Tyndale Fiction for gifting me an advanced copy of The Beijing Betrayal via NetGalley.
I have enjoyed the books in the Marcus Ryker series and this was no exception. The spycraft makes for thrilling listening as the agents speed across the globe to thwart evil plans to start a large scale war and bring great bloodshed. There may be some unrealistic elements, but overall the story is one of courage, sacrifice, and faith. One star was taken away due to the staccato cadence of the narrator which made for difficult listening.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
l've enjoyed this series and if as it's rumored to be the last book of the series l'm good with that.
8 months have passed since the attack at the end of the previous book. Marcus and his team are hard at work hunting down the Libyan, the leader of the terrorist group Kairos.
Russia is still in turmoil from the assassination of their president and his ties to the Libyan. Meanwhile China and its leader have also been bankrolling that terrorist organization and have big plans of their own.
lt's probably the weakest book of the series, but still decent.
What a conclusion to the series! Pieces from prior novels were brought into this one.
Marcus Ryker is hunting terrorist Abu Nakba and finds terrifying lab work instead. While he continues to track down Abu Nakba and get more intelligence on the lab work, Marcus finds out that China is planning to invade Taiwan. On top of all this is his upcoming wedding that has been delayed more than once.
Lots of action and the ending was satisfying and realistic.
Narrated by George Guidall.
My gratitude to Brilliance Audio for a complimentary NetGalley audiobook of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
While I did enjoy this final book in the series (so I assume) I did feel like the final battle was a little too easy and there was a specific instance where I felt like Marcus did not act in character which really bothered me.
However, I did love the epilogue and the book did hold up to the rest. I can easily recommend this series to anyone who loves thrilling Christian fiction!
My rating: 4.2*
—— Thanks to the punisher and NetGalley for this gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
The sixth and final book in the Marcus Riley series, filled with Rosenberg's well-thought-out characters and the high-stakes tension for which Rosenberg is known.
Riley, a CIA agent, and Annie, Deputy Director of the CIA are ready to settle down and leave the terrorism world behind. However, they promised to stick with the chase until Abu Nakba was brought down. It is a thankless mission, which neither may see the other side of. Filled with political intrigue and characters who love to hate, this was a great closer to a series I have enjoyed these past few years.
I am looking forward to seeing what the author has in store for the next series
Positively enthralled with this series. I love politics & mystery and action and this series has all the above. Cant tell you how many hours past my bedtime this series has taken me😆 Can’t wait to read more of Rosenbergs books!
A great finish another win for Joel Rosenberg. I don’t know where he’ll go from here but he just keeps getting better and better! He understands something that many novelist do not understand. Stories have to be wrapped up and every loose thread needs to be tied. And in this novel he does that masterfully. Definitely plan some time to read and enjoy. Because once you’ve tipped past the set up chapters, you will not wanna stop!
Let me preference this with how my heart cried when I read the words “final installment” in The Beijing Betrayal’s synopsis. As an avid reader of Brad Thor and Vince Flynn, the character of Marcus Ryker has always been a breath of fresh air. Scot Harvath and Mitch Rapp are, indisputably, exciting characters, but they are not Christians. They don’t pray. They don’t think of what God might want them to do. Rosenberg’s Marcus Ryker exemplifies the type of operative the United States needs more of; it’s too bad he’s fictional. The Beijing Betrayal by Joel C. Rosenberg gives Marcus Ryker the perfect send-off. It leaves readers with a smile, even if it is bittersweet. Bravo, Rosenberg.
Marcus Ryker and his team are committed to finding—and eliminating—Abu Nakba, the head of the Kairos terrorist group. They are all burned out. They are all exhausted, but they can’t give up…especially not when they discover a lab used to design and test a dangerous virus, which will be released within the United States. Marcus was always on the clock, but now? He’s on borrowed time. Millions of lives are now at stake, and Kairos is miles ahead.
China sees an opportunity: With the United States distracted by Kairos, now is perfect opportunity to attack and invade Taiwan. To dismantle U.S. supremacy in the Pacific. The cogs turn, and China aims to manipulate the situation in its favor. China aims to dominate—in every respect. And if Kairos is successful in releasing the virus, China may do just that.
Rosenberg presents a story that is entirely relevant and believable. He leaves no stone unturned. The Beijing Betrayal is full of “carrot and stick” politics, of thrill, of global aspirations. Everything in the novel connects brilliantly. Rosenberg pulls in previous characters and plots from the rest of the series without flaw. Occasionally, I had thoughts of “Wait, but what about…?” Rosenberg, however, quickly addressed my questions. The storyline is unmatched. The characters? Unrivaled. The action? Heart-pounding. The political intrigue? Chef’s kiss.
I will miss Marcus Ryker. This series is one I will read again and again. Rosenberg is a master of political, “Go Kill the Terrorist” (my genre!) thrillers. The Beijing Betrayal by Joel C. Rosenberg is the perfect conclusion to a thrilling series. It highlights the psychological and physical burnout that often comes with prolonged high-pressure situations. It emphasizes the power of faith, the importance of companionship, and the high stakes leaders often face—stakes the average citizen could ever understand.
Note: I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All views expressed are my own.
Marcus Ryker is back in the final installment of the series. Picking up shortly after The Libyan Diversion, Marcus and team are scouring the earth looking for The Libyan and his remaining Kairos terrorists. But China sees an opportunity to make a move.
We see Marcus as we haven’t seen him before. He and his team have been pushed to the breaking point and are teetering on burnout. Mistakes happen, very costly ones. The human body and mind can only take so much. It gives the book a ragged, frenetic tone as the team tries to accomplish the mission before the worst happens.
The world political stage is spot on with today’s times, lending a frightening authenticity to the story. The action is good, and all the supporting cast is back. The point of view changes to show what’s happening in China, Russia, Iran, the US, and wherever Kairos happens to be, allowing the reader to follow the motivations and intrigue.
This is Christian fiction so expect prayer and conversations about Jesus.
Family friendly with the expected, but not graphic, violence of this genre.
Thanks to NetGalley and Tyndale House. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
WOW. What a moving, exciting read. I had trouble putting down THE BEIJING BETRAYAL in order to eat breakfast, lunch, or even dinner. This book became part of my life for a short few days. Joel Rosenberg has written other fantastic novels (THE LIBYAN DIVERSION, THE KREMLN CONSPIRACY, and THE JERUSALEM ASSASSIN) but this may be my favorite. Once again Marcus Ryker is the main character involved in a number of conspiracies. Other notables include the leaders of China, Taiwan, Russia, Iran, and the terror group Kairos. As in prior novels with Marcus Ryker, there is non-stop action involving Marcus and his 'gang' of American notables. These include many CIA notables, including Ryker's love, Deputy Director of the CIA, Annie Stewart, many CIA agents, and others including the President of the United States. It is this group involved with the terrorist Abu Nakba along with the heads of the countries mentioned above. It is suspected that Kairos is planning to bomb much of the US as well as spread a deadly, invasive chemical that will wipe out thousands of Americans. Finding out who is involved in this plan, whether Russia is involved, and/or China, and Iran. Meanwhile the Chinese are preparing to retake Nationalist China (Taiwan) and attacking American ships in that area. This makes for a page-turning read authored by a favorite of mine, Joel Rosenberg. Placing a CAST OF CHARACTERS by country, etc. , makes the reading of any Rosenberg novel more easily understood and was something I turned to many times. Unfortunately, this is scheduled to be the last Marcus Ryker novel.
Audible. I have ready all of the Marcus Ryker Series. I hate to finish, because I know how long it is between books. I hope there will be another, even though Marcus is hanging it up! I hope Rosenberg continues to write his exciting fiction books!

Excellent Conclusion To The Excellent Marcus Stryker Series!
The Beijing Betrayalis the sixth book in Rosenberg’s thrilling series featuring CIA Agent Marcus Ryker, who is pretty much everything you want in a main character. In Ryker, Rosenberg’s protagonist has the right touch and balance pbetween humanizing him and allowing him to remain slightly larger than life. Put more simply, he’s flawed, yet extremely capable.
I won’t describe the plot of The Beijing Betrayal, as this can be found in the Amazon or Goodreads Book Descriptions. I’ll just say that it as compelling, exciting and suspenseful as any of the five previous excellent books in this series, making it a great way to conclude this series. Needless to say, I enjoyed it a lot and highly recommend it to any thriller lover for the following reasons: ... It is virtually unputdownable with a continuous nail-biting plot from beginning to end; ;...Rosenberg does an excellent job in researching the subject matter of this book. ;...Typical of books by Rosenberg, the subject matter is so topical that you feel that one day it could be the front page headline of your favorite newspaper; and ...The author’s writing style enables the reader to feel transported right into the middle of all the plot's twists and turns..
This delightful thriller will definitely cause you some sleepless nights! Before finishing the book, there were several actual news items that made the story very vivid and timely indeed.
Although I am quite the girly girl, my brother has gotten me hooked on adventures like The Beijing Betrayal. The book is the sixth and final novel in the Marcus Ryker series. Please note that the author does a rather outstanding job of making sure that the story is totally understandable and satisfying to readers who have not read the preceding books. I so love tales that feature strong and resourceful female characters, and I am happy to report that there are several such women here. XOXOXOs to the author, Joel Rosenberg, for creating this very well paced work:)
I love Rosenberg’s stories. Always timely, always well researched, and always action packed. This one definitely felt like the ending to a long story. Maybe not quite as packed as others, but like Ryker, it was tired. Not in a bad way. But in the way that you could tell there wasn’t as much that needed to be told.
The thing I loved and hated most was the epilogue. I don’t think there has been a more solid call to Jesus than the sermon at the end. I couldn’t keep “Amen” from my lips. So well explained and so needed. But after that the epilogue just kept going and going. It could have been significantly shortened.
Overall, a solid read and a great ending for such a powerful series.
Another compelling read torn from the pages of tomorrow's headlines. After a decade of building a military machine China deems capable of standing up to U.S. might, China enlists the services of Abu Nakba and begins its dragon's gambit to bring Taiwan into the fold and establish an Asian hegemony. All this plays out while Ryker and his team labor under the strain of years of non-stop special ops aimed at bringing Nakba to justice. The Beijing Betrayal is a fitting conclusion to the Ryker series even if the Epilog itself is a bit, uh, different.
I've always liked Joel C Rosenberg books and this one was good, and it concludes probably my favorite Rosenberg series. The pacing was fast, but not rushed, for the most part. I liked the short chapters, as I just flew through the book. I liked that we weren't always reading from Marcus's POV and we got to have chapters within the Chinese and Russian government and with Abu Nakba. The themes of faith and christianity were so good and I love that Rosenberg doesn't shy away from them. I also liked how real the book felt, not just because it mentioned real things that had happened, but just because this event could totally happen. The writing was also very good and the ending was a very satisfying conclusion.
SPOILER REVIEW:
The wedding epilogue was much deserved for Marcus seeing his character arc come to fruition. Him and Annie together are so nice and it's nice to see them have a satisfying ending.
Is it wrong to say that this book was building to a big climactic maybe even explosive finish, and then it just felt too easy? I thought the plot was very good, but the situation was diffused so quickly, there was no tension that I felt, and everything that the last few books were leading to just didn't do it for me. Like all it took for the Russians to rout out their ally was for Oleg to kill himself, and the Americans to turn him back over, to also get the sanctions eventually taken away. Wouldn't the Chinese investing in the Russians have been able to sustain their economy? Felt too easy to me.
Like coming off the last book with all the tension of the climax this book for me just fell flat. I didn't like President Hernandez as a character, maybe because I had gotten so attached to President Clarke, but to just vaguely mention he had a stroke and eventually died was disappointing.
Also, how did Abu Nakba and his men escape the lab in Karachi, and what caused the whole pier to explode?
I thought the way Marcys acted with Oleg was totally out of character, I know he was stressed and on the verge of burnout, but he had no compassion for Oleg and never even apologized for not staying in touch. And I mentioned this already, but the whole Oleg killing himself was the answer kind of dumb.
In the end, a solid book, not my favorite of the series, but it was good. But in the end I was let down especially after reading what the plot could've been and the fact it felt too easy and I would've been okay with abother 200-300 pages to really add tension and draw the plot out.
I received this Title in a Goodreads Giveaway. Author Rosenberg's reads are normally very good. Full of Action and twists to the plot. This book didn't deliver that very well. It's almost like he rushed through it. I think the author may have gotten character burnout on this one. It's like he needs a different inspiration of sorts for a new character. There were areas in the book that could have used more detail and action it. That's just my opinion. Give it a try yourself, you may find it good as where as I didn't.
Five hundred stars. Wow. Fiction at its finest. Action packed in the best way I’ve had the pleasure of reading.
Realistic. Showing evil for what it is. Advanced character development and emotional portrayal. Flawless editing and plot lines that will give you whiplash.
I was scared the WHOLE book that Marcus would actually die in this one. After all, Rosenberg, my friend, you are 1 for 3 on main characters surviving to the end of their series. But Marcus finally, finally gets the girl. (I read the whole wedding by checking the end of each page to make sure no falling missiles interrupted the ceremony, before I was okay to read the entire page.) With the gospel and Jesus as the crowning jewel in the wedding message.
What a way to go out, Ryker.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
After the first few chapters, the novel becomes too narrative, too many words that keeps you away from the action. It would be better to keep the action running instead of so many words describing other issues that are irrelevant to the story at that moment. One example is the wedding. Describing all the people that were there, describing all the family members that were present, preaching about the time God made the sacrament of matrimony and giving and homily about it.Too many details that keeps you away from what is happening at that moment.
As i expected, the fighting, the intrigue, & suspense started immediately & continued nearly to the end. In my opinion, several of the closing chapters were a waste of a good story & novel. The plot dragged through the wedding scenes & distracted from the real storyline. I'm sure there are others who could dwell on the final pages, but if I wanted to be bored with these scenes, I would have gone to the Hallmark channel or checked out a romance novel from the local library. Mr Rosenberg, sir, please stick to the genre that drew readers to be fans of your novels. God bless, keep the imagination up towards your writing.
