In a month, I've gone from magicless to one of the most powerful dark mages in the world. You'd think that would make my life easier.

But all that power is only potential until I learn how to wield it, and my enemies have a huge head start. While I'm picking up every skill I can, adversaries both within Villain Academy and beyond it are working to knock me down.

My fellow scions? I can count at least a couple of them among those enemies. The others... Let's just say the lines between light and dark have gotten a lot more blurred.

Nothing's safe here—not my mind, my heart, my magic, or the few people who're proving themselves my allies. When the danger turns deadly, will I be able to save all of them and myself?

Rory’s battle to survive Villain Academy has only just begun. Vicious treachery, unexpected allies, thrilling passion, and wrenching heartbreak await in Vile Sorcery…

*Vile Sorcery is the second book in a university-age paranormal academy series. Expect magical villainy, a tough heroine who bends to no one’s will, a dollop of steam, and a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance where there'll be no choosing required.*

So apparently this series is classified as 'reverse harem'- that's a new one for me and I guess kind of explains some things, but I'm still confused lol.

I will say that the world is coming together a little more. Rory is starting to question things around her and not just take everything at face value - which is what I really wanted from her in the first book. She starts to dig into her past and history, and I believe that Chase just cracked the surface with the reveals.

The one thing that I'm still not sure about is the boys in this book. They are all so full of mixed signals - well, all except Malcolm who is just a dick. If they are all supposed to join together and be this huge power all together, they are failing. I don't blame Rory for not trusting any of them. But I will say, it's funny how they are all switching now that they know she possesses all power elements. I can't even pick who I like the best.

But you know who I don't trust - Deborah. It's not lost on me that her familiar is a rat. She's also a joymancer who is obviously keeping things from Rory. I do not trust her at all and am afraid of how much she will damage Rory's future.

Story is interesting but I won’t classify this as romance or reverse harem. These dudes suck...especially Malcolm.

How is Chase going to redeem these characters? I understand it’s a bully romance, but some of them are just terrorizing the main character. In the first book I was confused, because these guys couldn’t be her romantic interest.

Like...them?

description

They hate her. No way. But somehow they.are.the.love.interests. So we have Connar, Jude, Declan, and Malcom.

Honestly,
description

Okay, maybe Declan is. He’s the only one with a valid reason for his behavior. Also, a big part is his honesty about their relationship. Declan offers no false promises or hopes. It’s tragic how he’s the best one.

description

Now there’s Jude. I actually did not remember why I didn’t like him from the last book due to my goldfish memory. Then Rory listed the reasons I hated him, and my dislike strengthened.

description

There was an attempt to redeem Jude’s character this book. He was okay, I suppose. Rory wasn’t impressed either, but there was progress. He’s trying. I’ll give him that.

Then, we have Connar. What can I say about Connar? During moments with him, all I could think was, then date Malcolm He was obsessed with pleasing Malcolm. But that’s not the whole reason why he upset me. He was just extra. Instead of doing a 180 out of nowhere talk to the MC. She might not approve, but she’ll understand. He wanted to talk when it was too late.

description

Least and last is Malcolm. I don’t even know where to start with him. Malcolm desired the main character while being her mortal nemesis. He literally abused her and encouraged Connar and Jude to do the same. All in the name of wearing her down to later become allies. Malcolm is like this due to circumstances from his environment.

description

Originally I had wanted Rory to just give in and pretend to be friends. However, by the end of book 1 that thought had completely disappeared. In this book Malcolm solidified his role as an enemy. Rory didn’t even want revenge, but to be left alone. Meanwhile I’m here like

description

Rory during the entire book 1 was just asking people to be kind or at least decent to each other. And everyone just responds as if she’s insane.

description

Book 2, Rory is trying to work within the system without bending to it. The only problem Rory had was her weird faith in joymancers. Other than her parents she has no reason to believe in them. She actually has reason not to. Rory’s endurance was amazing. Some characters hate her for no reason. She could just be there breathing and some characters would get upset. She constantly had to be strong because she had no one to rely on. The character must be exhausted. She couldn’t even leave.

Despite this, I love a strong female lead and just want her to triumph. I was frustrated reading this, but I never lost interest. It’s entertaining. I’m just waiting for Rory to turn the tables.

Rory gets a better hold on her magic in this book, but is still struggling against the bullies of the school. Malcolm has devised a plan to make Rory doubt her own sanity; however, the other scions are beginning to doubt the need to bring Rory to her knees. Meanwhile, her advisor becomes mysteriously and dangerously sick every time he tries to help her.

I liked this one better than the first book. There is still a lot we don't know about the world Rory lives in. It is coming together in little pieces. I'm getting a little frustrated with Rory's refusal to see how complicated her world really is. I assume there is a purpose for it and all will be revealed in due time. I'll be picking up the next book shortly.

3.5-4 stars. This series continues to stand out for me not only in the Academy novels but also in the Bully Romance it being "paranormal" in nature. I really love how the author spends so much time focusing on the plot line. Its making for a really good ride. As our FMC grows stronger and stronger and starts to really embrace her role more and more I find myself growing ever more excited to be there when she freaking unleashes on these spoiled brats.. I can't freaking wait till she has them eating out of the palm of her hand. I also like how the author hasn't flipped any characters 180 really there has been a natural progression of relationships between them with some still hell bent on destroying her, some intrigued by her ability to stand strong against the pressure, some wanting to protect her from the evil they themselves have seen, and some just freaking stuck in the middle of it all. It gives a little more depth to their dynamic.

In this second book of the series, our FMC Rory is trying her best to get the hang of things all the while the boys are being pressured by the evil Barons to really put the pressure on her and bring her to heal. There is more going on here though, when Rory's mentor becomes violently ill every time he tries to "warn" her about something Rory sets off to find out what is going on. She also wants to find out the reason her parents were targeted by "joymancers" because it goes against everything she has been raised to believe. She continues to fight against the prejudice against the naries since to her it makes absolutely no sense. She also gets some insight into a couple of the guys.. why they are the way they are. All of this and she is trying to avoid Malcolm like the plague. Malcolm on the other hand finds himself almost the odd man out as everything he has spent all this time coordinating is falling a part all around him.. and failure is not an option.

I thought it was a good continuation of the series and look forward to book 3. I like how this book spends less tine focusing on the interactions between the characters and instead the book has the environment of learning and the interactions take place because of it. The series is really embodying an Academy series instead of just using the Academy craze as a backdrop..

Book: Vile Sorcery
Author: Eva Chase
Recommend: Yes
Spice: 🌶️
Age recommendation: 16-30+ Years

Plot:
A Young girl who was taken from her adoptive parents house, and placed into a magic university called bloodstone academy, has found that the 4 top royals wanna break her and remould her into there shape.
She has managed to get one to stop, Jude, who wants to be her boyfriend. However he has screwed up so many times. Her friend broke her arm during one of his pranks and she hasn’t forgiven him cause he doesn’t understand why she is so mad about it.
Declan is trying to help her with teaching her magic but won’t help her outside of the tutor room. They went to one of her houses from her birth parents and had sex, only to be found by her grandparents. Declan tells her he will make it seem like they are not friends at school so they don’t get in trouble for hooking up as his a teachers aid.
Malcom is trying to make her go crazy, he placed a magic amplifier near her room so he could send illusions into her room at night and send her crazy.

My feelings:

So I bought this bookset ages ago when it was on special on amazon with he intentions of reading it when I got the chance.
Well that took me like 6 months to do.
I started it yesterday and the books only take about 6 hours of reading per book, so ill review them one at a time.

I really enjoyed this one. It actually finished out of the blue and left me wanting the next one so bad I had to start book 3 straight away.
I love the dynamic between everyone.
They started wanting to break her, but she slowly got though there defences and Brought out feelings I think they have suppressed for years. Jude has given in to her completely. I knew he would fall first. I love his style of grovelling, and I love how he is slowly trying to understand why he is in trouble with her to start with.
Malcom needs a kick up the butt, He is sooo mean and doesn’t need to be. Conner needs to grow a back bone and stand up for what he wants, and Declan needs to stop being a teachers aid so he can show her his real affections.

As for the top people, I think they are the real killers, I think they killed her parents and covered it up. I think they have been making it look like her parents where bad people when they in fact were not. I also think her real parents where trying to get away from them and that why they were killed.

“I think I should be clear about something,” he said abruptly. “The other girls—there aren’t any other girls now. That I’m kissing. Or whatever else. There never was anyone else I really wanted anyway. I didn’t know what I wanted until you. So I’m in this just for you as long as there’s any chance at all. I can make up for what happened before. I will. However long it takes.”

When I saw people saying that they couldn't really get into non-reverse harem books anymore after discovering them, I really shrugged it off. A story is as good as the story is, right? But I have to admit that I'm slowly starting to understand what they mean. So many books would be even better if the girl wouldn't have to choose and so many books skip over scenes that can add so much to a story!

I was therefore already looking forward to today and picking up this book. I already fell in love with Rory in the first book and I was excited to watch her grow as a person and a character in this one. And I was not disappointed. Rory is slowly getting the hang of her powers and she's starting to understand the powers others wield. Watching her struggle and survive, watching her win small battles and watching her change the world one small bit at a time is inspiring and a true pleasure.

But this book also gave me the chance to bond a little more with the men she's slowly falling for. I like how Eva Chase is never rushing things. Not only does she give the reader the chance to understand what Rory sees in the guys who have not exactly made her life easy so far, she also gives us glimpses of what's going on in their heads and the more I read and see, the more I'm starting to fall for them too, just like Rory.

What Chase is also not rushing is the plot. Rory is clearly determining the pace of her story. She's in charge of what happens to her and when. We see glimpses of the rest of the world, of people waiting for her to either break or step up, but Rory doesn't give them the chance to come too close yet. What we see brewing is very exciting and dangerous though. There are still quite some secrets being held and I can't wait to discover what they are. At the moment I don't think it can be anything good, but we'll see about that.

I'll dive into the next book next week and I'm already really looking forward to it!

That ending has left me absolutely numb!! My heart is broken for Rory and I'm not sure what else to feel about those last unfolding events!! I cannot praise this newest work of Eva Chase enough! I'm just blown away!! I think this book is mesmerizing and intriguing and most definitely rises above many of the other RH academy series out there!! From start to finish it was one captivating jewel. My heart aches so deeply for Rory!! I just want Malcolm to bow down to her! I want the other guys to choose her and I want the drive behind all of the scheming to be brought to light. I know that with all of those brilliantly different POVs, we've gotten insight into each guy, but I just feel like what we've read is just the tip of the iceberg meant to sink Rory. Everyone is plotting against her and I want to see champions rise to stand besides her. She doesn't need a savior, but people in her corner would be a beautful sight! This is the best series that Ms. Chase has ever written 💝💝💝 I feel like I won't be breathing easily until I get book 3.

Okay I get that it’s an enemies to lovers, specifically a bully romance with a reverse harem in a university, but the one thing that is making me turned off from at least one of the supposed love interests, is him calling her a “bitch”! I forgot if it’s two or three times but for a man to call someone he just slept with, a BITCH??

Absolutely not. It’s so disrespectful and demeaning to me and I can’t get past that character’s actions in my eyes. Like I get it’s a bully verse but I just feel like there’s still a line a between bullying someone and the vibe that comes from using that word. (Of course it’s different if it’s a girl being like heyyy bitch but anyways these are rambling thoughts)

Wowzer on a stick!!! This book was great!! I couldn't put it down, and every problem that comes up, the FMC powers through like the badass she is. Even when she's struggling, she's amazing, and I want to be her. Everyone's just finally starting to break down defenses and get to know each other, and then another challenge pops up, and I love how I can already see how strong it's going to make them together. Seriously. Especially the guys are learning so much without realizing it. Everything they learn from these moments and conflicts are going to solidify their bonds to each other so they can be a united front against the enemy.

And Rory's powers are so COOL!!! I loved the magic system before, and in every book, I love it even more. Especially with how open the possibilities are. Nothing is constraining to specific spells. The words and intent have different meanings to different people. It's giving me the same desire for knowledge that "Methods of Rationality" gave me when he unlocks partial transfiguration. I want to learn the limits and creativity of all the magic in these books for myself!!

Getting to know each of the guys would be great if Malcolm would just get that stubbornness in check already. He's being a little manic and unreasonable about this. And I'm not saying it's all his fault. His parents obviously are the worst, but he is his own person and should start acting like he has control over his own decisions.

Connor had a little moment at the end, I'm hoping, is a step in the right direction, and Jude was doing so well until his pureblood, muggle hating, mindset made an appearance. He's not the sharpest crayon, but he must see now that he was naive and inconsiderate. Then Declan. *sigh*. Declan, Declan, Declan. He's got a lot to deal with, so he gets a somewhat pass for now. When the crew takes a stand, those worries will lesson substantially, but we must be patient for the plot to progress naturally. And patient I will (try to) be.

This book set up a lot of questions, and I'm not going to rest until I get them all. Quitting my job would be a bad idea, buuuuut I'm considering it. Or maybe I'll take a week vacation. I just noticed this is book 2 of 8, and I'm ready!!

The second book in this series was fantastic. Rory has won her place at the academy, now she just has to keep the other scions from sending her over the edge into insanity. It is a fight she is not really ready for, but one she is determined to win. Several of the guys seem to be softening for her, but she has been fooled before and is determined not to fall for their tricks again.

Jude is surprised to learn that he doesn't really want to help Malcolm bring Rory to her knees. He is not even sure it is in his best interest. Offering to teach her drive seems innocent enough, he can pretend to spy on her while actually enjoying her company. It is all good until he makes the mistake of admitting to a certain illusion, one that Sadie is really not happy about.

Declan is used to walking a tightrope. He has to keep his aunt off his case long enough to graduate and take his place as one of the Barons. He also needs to protect his little brother by keeping him out of the fray. When he is directed to assist Rory with her mental shielding, he finds himself adding one more thing to his to-do list, help keep her safe so she can become an ally for change.

Rory knows she has enemies, but when it becomes apparent that someone has put a curse on her advisor, Professor Banefield, she is determined to find a way to help him. He has something he wants to tell her, but every time he tries he becomes violently ill. Will Rory be able to break the curse in time to keep him from wasting away?

I can't wait to find out what is going to happen next. I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Great read. The movement of Rory's affection between the different scions was entertaining. You can tell that each one of the scions care for her in their own way, besides Malcom that is. Rory brings across the message that just because you are a certain age or gender doesn't mean that you won't be able to amount to great things. Rory is strong, independent, a fast learner and quick on her feet. She doesn't let anyone put her down and she stands up for what she believes is right.
There is some mystery. When Rory is trying to find out what is going on with her mentor and when trying to find out what Malcolm is planning. There is also romance between Rory and 3/4 of the other Scions. It's a bit strange but it does happen in reality. Moving from one guy to the next very quickly mad ether seem more human. I know alot of people don't agree with this but like I said it does happen. The way Rory responds to the non magic folk is very refreshing compared to how the others view them. Rory finds out what is wrong with her mentor and then learns who is behind some of the other attacks. I can't wait to see what the next novel has in store. The storyline and the characters are addicting and will leave you wanting for more.

**** No Spoilers ****
I have became highly enthralled with the story. Rory is still taking names and kicking butt. She refuses to break. I'm still not happy with the other 4 other scions. Connor just messed up with turning his back on Rory. Jude keeps tormenting Rory until he realizes that he doesn't want to break her. Jude tries to make up for everything that he did in the past, but he screws up majorly. Delcan keeps his distance from Rory as he tries to help her. Well Malcolm is still Malcolm. While things at school stay the same, some things do change. There seems to be some discord between the scions. Poor Rory keeps losing those she cares about. There is a plot against Rory and she must figure it out before she is taken to task.
••••• I highly recommend this book/series! •••••

Audiobook review: Vile Sorcery is book 2 in the Royals of Villain Academy series. The story picks up where book 1 leaves off. Rory is once again fighting the injustices of the society she is thrown into while trying to learn as much as she can. The steamy scenes (yes, plural) are well written. The characters are complex. I’m really interested in how this series will unfold. The narrators did a great job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

HP fanfic vibe buuuut

This should be so stupid and it’s just, not. I really enjoyed it and downloaded the next immediately. Some of the setup feels flimsy but the heroine is great and true to herself and theres no prudery or stupidity on her part.

The world building is off at times- a ghost of the HP fanfic originals if I had to guess, but the writing is good and engaging and the heroine makes it worthwhile. She sticks up for herself and is consistent and good but not goody two shoes.

I'm so glad Rory is starting to question things and dig deeper into her past. Deborah's insistence that Rory shouldn't trust fearmancers is making her seem suspicious.

I know this is a slow burn RH but it's very slow. I'm having a hard time seeing how they'll all come together but hopefully it'll become more clear as the series progresses. Malcolm especially I can't see winning Rory over (or me lol)

A twisted and enlightening tale

I felt highs and lows in this book while I feel Rory is quite judgmental towards all the Fearmancers because of how she was raised she seems to not be open to the possibilitythat the Joymancers aren’t these amazing people. I feel the boys are fighting for her affections when she thinks she’s better then everyone else.

I HATE MALCOLM. What does he have to prove to put her through this stuff. I typically don't like bully romances and this confirms that they are terrible. How does he "like" her but treat her this way. How is it that all of the other scions are ok with it THEN change their mind and want to keep Rory the same. This was so odd to me.

Malcolm... why the actual shit I am so excited about him getting his in the next book.

Jude... actually an evil dick who's trying to be better but failing because he is in fact an evil dick.

Connar... ugh that whole dragon thing legit made my heart hurt but boy needs to grow a pair.

Declan... the feels that your life sucks pretty hard.

Another great book in the series. I love how the relationships develop slowly and how we get sucked into the mystery, betrayal, suspense,...
At this point I do hope we get some answers soon and that the FMC opens up her eyes when it comes to the joymancers and the threat of the barons. I'm on the edge of my seat!

Great sequel!

I wish I could punch Malcolm in the face for being so stubborn but I feel like that would take away from the many time Rory has gotten to him lol even faced with all of these enemies Rory is still able to keep her courage and move forward beaten but not broken. I can't wait to see(read) what she does to these boys next!

There was so much suffering in this one and it was absolutely delicious. The scenes with the dragon figurine??? Especially THAT scene?? That hurt me so good honestly. All of the 5 stars. Of course, that's not to say that I think this book is perfect. The fmc is so self righteous, and the fact that it took her so long to admit that joymancers aren't all sunshine and rainbows was kind of annoying. And then there's also the fact that everytime she refers to them as villains, it seems more about the fact that Joymancers said they're villains as opposed to the many ways they've mistreated her. But the way the plot is going is so good that I can deal with it and it doesn't detract from the story.

This series might shape up to be a 3.5 star and not a 4 or 5 star read for me because
A) it's so long and I'm not trying to read 8 books about the same people
B) this is truly a bully romance and that's not really my cup of tea because I genuinely can't see how they're going to resolve their differing views on the next point
C) there's so much discrimination against the ordinary human beings that I'm struggling with not conflating it with racism, especially because of the way they're seen as expendable, and the casual mention of them being used.
D)I have seen neither hide nor hair of a hint of diversity. I might be wrong, but from what I understand all the main and side characters are white, slender or appropriately muscled, able-bodied, and straight.
BUT
1) Have I mentioned the plot? I have no idea how they're going to end up together or how she's going to end up convincing everyone that Naries deserve rights but I'm interested and that's good enough
2) The male POVs are doing exactly what they're meant to do. It's giving me the right amount of redemption and reasoning without making it impossible for me to get upset with them for doing the admittedly shitty things they do.
3) I genuinely believe that the scions would be an amazing partnership if they could just work together, and I'm really excited for what that looks like
4) The Author's writing style is something that is super easy for me to read and I appreciate that because it's surprisingly hard to find my specific match that's not so informal that I want to cringe but also not so formal that there's more than one sentence describing the colour of an unimportant flower.

All that said, I can't see myself dnf'ing this series unless the author writes in something that's not acceptable.

Vile Sorcery is book 2 of the Royals of Villain Academy series. This book picks up right where book 1 ended. These seem to be done in a serial format but are a little longer than typical serials. I enjoyed this one even more than book 1. We made some progress with the story and with Rory's powers. We haven't really gotten to the RH part of the series yet but she is exploring interest in a couple of the guys and did have sex with another one. I borrowed this audiobook from the library. The narration is good. I am immediately jumping into book 3 now. 4.5 stars overall.
