Finally!!! A book that doesn’t speak down to you, is super useful and a pleasure to read. If you’ve had unexplained symptoms like myself then do yourself a favour and get a copy… it really helped me!

Gillian Deakin makes a very useful distinction between physical problems (hardware) and functional problems (software). When there are real symptoms (fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, etc) that do not show up on physical tests, we may need to reset our software, the functions that have been disrupted by over-activation of our stress systems. Deakin offers many useful tips for resetting the software, and an appendix of useful resources. It's disappointing that the book does not offer much guidance for situations of chronic stress that cannot easily be avoided: e.g. caring responsibilities for a loved one with serious health needs.

Some interesting information and basics to try but doesn't really answer the question on the cover and I have to wonder if by the time you decide to read this you would have already tried the basics (sleep, exercise etc) I know I certainly have. Worth a read for a memory refresh or ideas on how to approach your health professionals for help obtaining answers but for me at least it didn't actually provide any real answers in itself.

This is a great book for anyone working in health care and anyone who has ever felt something to be 'not quite right' about their body and wondered whether it was serious and what to do about it. I am a doctor myself and this book has helped me and my patients understand and manage a range of symptoms. Well done Gillian
