This is book two of the Merely Mortal series and the main character is Tamara Devine, a mortal outcast in a powerful magical family. IN the first book she saw her life get torn apart as her supposed mortal brother Conrad tried to repeatedly kill her and those she loved. She had a short taste of real life as a human for a week after her the funerals and fell for a man called Paul and his young daughter Diana. When Conrad took her amulet and tried to use it himself, the magic reversed and killed him in all the ways he had tried to have her killed! Time itself reversed, and it was as if no one else had died except for Conrad. She can’t get over Paul and likes to watch him play in the park with his daughter and the dog Diana named Tamara! They don’t recognise her and so the pain is all hers. Conrad however, is far from gone, as he has returned as a very vengeful ghost and has threatened to kill them all again, if she tries to tell anyone the truth. Her parents had previously been trying to set her up with a marriage to another powerful family, whilst her uncle Mortimer gave her a burial plot for her twenty-eighth birthday, as mortals don’t live long as he understands it! The only other constant is Costin (Constantine) the vampire leader for this whole part of the country and very powerful. He has been there as all sorts of things happened to her in her childhood. He always seemed to turn up, like when Conrad pushed her off the balcony, saying she could fly with the potion his magical friends had supposedly given her, and she fell breaking her arm badly. He was drawn to the blood on her arm, and it was her Grandfather George who called him away from her, even though he hadn’t hurt her!
Her uncle comes back to visit, with an important announcement of her engagement to another of the powerful families in town, which will apparently help sort a few issues out between them and give her family the protection they need in their position. But the man they want her to marry, Chester, is almost as bad as the first once they tried fixing her up with. She wished she could listen to her older brother Anthony, who suggests they escape on board a ship going to Africa, or somewhere else far away. He is the magical child and was shipped off to learn everything he could about magic and his place in this family. Only now that Conrad is supposedly gone, is Tamara getting to know him better. Anthony had made her a promise when she was six and hurt by his magic, that he would make her immortal, so she never had to die. It had always been her and Conrad growing up, not allowed out of the protected wing when her parents were having supernatural guests over. He was picked from an orphanage and given the job of protecting Tamara, which he soon grew to hate, wanting to be turned into a vampire and doing all he could to learn magic.
As she is preparing for the engagement contract to be signed, Costin turns up in her bedroom and wants to talk to her about a prophecy they are connected to according to her late grandfather George. He had made a promise to George years ago and means to uphold it. The prophecy is her destiny and time is running out, after he gave her a few weeks to grieve for Conrad. She however, knows nothing about this and they are disturbed by her uncle, who isn’t happy to see her with Costin, thinking she is in a relationship with him! Her mother, Astrid, is not at all happy about her supposed dalliance with a vampire, no matter how powerful they are, and tells her to keep it quiet until after the marriage happens, then she can do what she wants. She is to do her duty to the Devine family name and marry for position and power! Thankfully, there is a slight mishap in the signing process with the wizard in charge and things will have to happen on another day. Anthony drags her out to the catacomb entrance, where Costin had asked her to meet him, while he goes down into the secret underground to party with other supernaturals. Costin has a small book for her to read about the prophecy and it can only be read by blood magic, with her blood! The amulet George gave her all those years ago is now broken and in pieces, but he had made a deal with trolls for it, and it has some unusual side effects, which she has experienced. Costin tells her she must visit a troll to get the amulet fixed, or a long sleeping being will be awakened and the whole world will be destroyed. Humans will die quickly and supernaturals may exist for a while, but the future is bleak, and she will be given a vision of this from the book. George always called her his delicate butterfly in a world of dragons and that everyone had their place in this world. She will have to face a difficult set of trials to prove her worth to have the amulet fixed and Conrad will interfere as always, in his usual evil manner. If she doesn’t accept this new destiny and do as Costin asks, she will lose everything all over again, as will the rest of the world. A twist at the end of the tale, leading into the next book, where her newfound relationship and trust could be torn apart once more! A unique look at being raised as a mortal without magic, amongst a powerful family of magic and more, but still expected to live to their expectations and the struggle she faces as she tries to rebel somewhat. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
