Dan Watters is a UK based comic book writer. His first book, LIMBO, was released through Image Comics in 2016. He has since written THE SHADOW at Dynamite Comics, and ASSASSIN’S CREED and WOLFENSTEIN for Titan Comics.
Currently he is writing the relaunch of LUCIFER for Vertigo’s Sandman Universe, as well as DEEP ROOTS for Vault Comics. Deeply rooted in London Town, and firmly of the Devil's party.
The God of Screams was a neat idea, visually represented well in this comic. However, this story was sold way more as being about the Cybermen, so you can imagine my disappointment at how they were used here, in a way that doesn't justify their presence on many of the covers used for the individual volumes that comprise this release.
As much as the artwork style works for the Scream Sommelier, it doesn't work as well for the human characters and really limits how expressive 15 and Ruby can be.
I also feel the flashback sequence towards the end would've worked better as the opening to this comic as it's easily the most impactful and powerful sequence of pages.
The continuity nods are welcome, but when the source of the scream is finally revealed, it doesn't make much sense why the TARDIS went through those places.
In terms of Series 14 continuity, the strip fits nicely between Rogue and The Legend of Ruby Sunday, including a direct lead into the latter and another Susan Twist cameo.
The physical comic itself has some cool bonus features as well, including covers, art work, and short interviews with the writer and illustrator. Those features are what hold my rating up at 3 stars, but the story itself would be a 2 at best.
The 15th Doctor came onto the scene not only with a new exciting series, but a new and exciting comic where we see him come face to face with the Cybermen. I'm very excited to read this finally.
History has been tampered with, but only to get The Doctor to notice it. After finding cyber technology in Yorkshire, the Doctor and Ruby head to the far future where the only thing still standing on Earth is a shopping mall with the last few inhabitants. Someone hiding away in the darkness wants to make The Doctor and Ruby scream, and it will do anything it needs to do just that. The Cybermen are coming, and a little girl needs saving.
Dan Watters has written a brilliant comic that honestly feels like a missing episode between 'Rogue' and 'The Legend of Ruby Sunday' as it has The Doctor finally realizing the woman they've been seeing constantly on their travels and finally making the decision to contact UNIT. This is a terrific comic that is scary, action-packed, emotional and intense. Such a great story that does a lot for 15 and Ruby as characters.
Overall: It's an outstanding comic that is definitely by far one of Titan's best. 10/10
An enjoyable story with some very cool world-building (which - thankfully - doesn't contradict anything in the canon! Tardis Wiki will be pleased...). It has the main problem that all of this era of Doctor Who has, which is that the god-like villains don't come with any real 'rules'... they have vague goals, and aren't engaging or relatable on a personal level. Also they can do anything at any time, they're all-powerful, but because they need to be beaten by the end of each story they always get defeated by some random trick or arbitrary deal. It doesn't make for a satisfying narrative - but this story does well to introduce and resolve some cool subplots around that central issue. I liked the cancaranka bugs a lot! And the idea of a shopping mall at the end of the world is very intriguing - something I'd like to see more of!
Dan Watters is a perfect fit for the more fantastical, fairytale feel of RTD's second era, crafting another themed git from out beyond the edge of everything, and giving Kelsey Ramsay an excuse to draw a spooky new take on a familiar foe. Hell, the visuals are a winner all round, though it does help that the Titan range's besetting sin has been making the leads look too young, which can't really happen when they're already as fresh-faced as Ncuti and Ruby. Topical resonance comes from the setting, the last sealed shopping centre on a dead planet, which isn't exactly subtle, but then nor were The Happiness Patrol or The Sun Makers.
This is my first venture into the Doctor Who comic realm and I really enjoyed it! I thought the setting of the mal at the end of the universe was really cool, and I would love to see it utilized in the show.
The villain of screams was also very interesting, wanting the doctor for the scream of a time lord is good.
Also loved the cybermen design in this, I am glad 15 got SOMETHING with the big three even if it wasn’t on screen!
Also them foreshadowing the one who waits as well was a cool addition.
I enjoyed this a lot, but also feel a bit let down that everything felt a bit safe. Dan Watters is such a killer choice for Doctor Who that I was excited to see his name attached. The overall premise is very on brand, but the Scream Sommelier just never felt particularly scary. I think a chunk of that comes down to the art, which, while serviceable, doesn’t really hit at the level it needs to in order to sell the fear. All in all, a good Doctor Who story that I wish had been a great one.
The Fifteenth Doctor is a very interesting version of the Doctor character so naturally wanted to read this. Will be interesting to see if there are more stories with this character down the line as they are enjoyable.
ruby and the cankaranka was everything. the doctor and maria were everything. the cyberman design was everything. the susan triad feature was everything.
im just obsessed.

Cybermen, nightmares bugs, lost child and flashbacks for the Doctor. Dick Turpin gesture stars and lots Bonnie Lanfard screaming. Dark corridors to run in and the last shopping centre on Earth. Great artwork and fantastic story
An exceptionally strong start to the series. I was already liking this volume and then there was that reveal about the Cybermen, which really elevated my opinion of it. I’m impatient to read the next volume.
