Great Stories for Children is a collection of some of Ruskin Bond's most delightful children's stories. It stars Toto, the monkey, who takes a fancy to the narrator's aunt, much to her dismay, a python besotted by his own appearance, a mischievous ghost who enjoys stirring up the house when things get dull, three young children stranded in a storm on the Haunted Hilland Ruskin Bond himself, who happens to make the acquaintance of a ghost at a resort late one night.
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and children's authors and a top novelist. He wrote his first novel, The Room on the Roof, when he was seventeen which won John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. In 1992 he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for his short stories collection, "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature. He now lives with his adopted family in Landour near Mussoorie.
I bought this book for my little girl to tell her bedtime stories but read it all by myself. It's a good book with great natural and wild life description. I particularly liked the story about a python and one story about a monkey Tutu
These stories would never grow old. At least, until I'm alive (which is a long time from now ;D). I just love to dive into these wonderful stories about nature. This is totally good for any age, trust me.
Nature is such an important aspect of the Earth, and we fail to recognize it. Ruskin Bond does that for us and passes the message on to us. And his writing is so wonderful with all those descriptions, I felt like a part of those stories.
I recommend this to anyone and everyone, whatever situation there is in your life. Must read!!
it's always a beautiful feeling when I read Ruskin bond. They're just not overwhelming but also informative. I loved all the stories, especially the python story, which was hilarious.
Oh, how much I love reading Ruskin bond stories🤔.Sooooo much.
Here in this book, there are a bunch of stories . And it is such a beautiful feeling reading these stories.
I loved a special tree, tiger my friend, monkey trouble, when the trees walked, a traveller’s tale very much. Ruskin bond is such a proficient writer , anybody , everybody ,young, old, people from any walk of life can connect with him so well. Such a legend. 🥳
Bond's work softens my heart and, in some way reconnects me to my childhood innocence. As always, "Bunkin's" books are out when there is rain. I just happen to like rain and stories by Ruskin Bond. They get along well.
Again, reading his books gives me immense freedom; I am not obliged to read his books in the same old boring way. I find it very adventurous to break the customs of starting a book from the start. I read this one from the end.
Some stories were repeated, but again, following Wilde's world religiously "If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all." As long as stories are funny, I can put up with any discomforts.
Thia is a book written by the great author Ruskin Bond. He has been writing for over sixty years and is one of the best authors ever born. In this book he has written nineteen stories in which he mentions about toto, a mischievous monkey, a baby python, a parrot, a pret and many more interesting characters. I recommend you to read this book as it is very interesting and adventurous.

I have learned many things from this book for example like: 1) love and care for anything always gives good results. From the story "A special tree". 2) We should always be honest . From the story "The thief's story" 3) Be kind to everyone. From the story "Goodbye Miss Mackenzie". 4) Help everyone when they need you . From the story " The Overcoat". 5) Overcome your fear . From the story " School among the pines". 6) Be strong in difficult time . From the story"Romi and the wildfire". 7) live happily and let others live happily from the story "Tiger my friend" 8) People will say something or the other but we should be strong enough to face them. From the story "And now we are twelve". 9) Good people or good things are never forgotten " When the trees walked" 10) " Pret in the house" is an funny story. A Pret was all mischievous 11) Always try to achieve your dreams from the story, " The tunnel" I would recommend this book to everyone who likes reading and those who don't like reading to read this collection of stories By Ruskin Bond.

"Monkey trouble" when tutu sat on boiling water and was unable to come out I was wondering why someone left the water on stove when they knew that there was a monkey in the house. "Snake Trouble" when the python ate all the food in the train and left nothing I was wishing that a station should come as soon as possible so that they can eat anything." Those three bear's" when the boy saw the bear the bear wanted to hide from the boy and as soon as the boy came down from the tree the bear came out and sat comfortably. I was amazed at his innocence." The coral tree"when the boy helped the girl to get the flower of coral tree . I loved the way he helped her. As I love plants that is why a loving felling grew in my heart when I read this story." Goodbye, Miss Mackenzie"when the author when to the hotel suddenly in a gost come in his room named Mackenzie who clear the room and go out without harming anyone. I wonder how the author was not scared after he came to know that the person came in his room was a gost and not a real person. " Pret in the house" There was a gost who always do mischievous this to trouble the people present in the house . I was laughing at all his mischievous things. "And now we are twelve" when he says that" let's stick it in the ground , Then in the spring a chestnut tree will come up" I felt a sensation of love. It was such a amazing book that I cannot even explain
'Nothing is lucky if you put it away. If you want luck, you must put it to some use.’
Here comes another book from Ruskin Bond, Great stories for children which is a compilation of 19 short stories, some sweet and funny, some quirky and spooky, filled with romance and awe. Classic stories like The cherry Tree are included in the book which pertains to Rakesh planting of a sapling of a cherry tree in his garden. As his sapling grows into a big tree, his feelings for the trees also grows with it. He waters it, feds it, takes care of him making him a part of his life.
Cute horror stories of Usha, Binya and Suresh ghostly adventures in the wind on the haunted hills; funny pranks played by a pret in his grandfather’s house; ghost of Hazoor Ali – a butler of Englishman coming alive to find the passport of Mr. Bond, Adventure tales of Romi and Teju making their way to their homes through a forest fire, across the stormy streams and crowd of wild animals creating a traffic jam in Romi and the wildfire makes up for a thrilling read.
Various animal stories are included for children in the book such as of the Tigers, forever – an adventurous tale of the last standing Tiger (Uncle Tiger) left in the jungle, wild bears eating pumpkin on the Himalayan stone roofs, tales of his grandfather’s pets - Tutu the monkey and naughty python creating life difficult for Aunty Ruby and Uncle Benji.
With trees coming alive in Dehra and walking like ancient giants, cultivating new friendships under the shades of a Coral Tree, sometimes over flower orchards of gentian and purple columbine, all these stories have recreated the magic of childhood for the readers.
I don’t know what it is about his stories but it feels like I want to live them. We tend to take things casually in our life which in turn makes us despair and sad. Bond through these stories teaches children and even adults, If we nurture and take care of people they stay. Of course, efforts are required but that is how the relationship is blossomed and prospered.
Love comes to us in all forms and shapes. Like the story of The Overcoat A wind blowing across our cheeks can be a symbol of spirits loving us if we choose to feel it. The world might be more beautiful without the human presence; but then, who would appreciate it.
Go out children. Love and play. Savour the juices of Plum trees, feel the thunder booming over you, make good friends that give you warm and confidence and try to fill your life with laughter.
The story was really fascinating it derived me to the world of dreams and kindness , these stories not only entertain us , but also teaches us the moral the lesson we wouldn't have understood if anyone told formally .The ensemble includes Tutu the monkey who is fond of troubling the no-nonsense Aunt Ruby, a pet python who makes sudden appearances at the most unusual places, a troublesome Pret who enjoys stirring up the household he resides in, three young children stranded on the Haunted Hill, Himalayan bears who feast on pumpkins, plums and apricots, a crafty thief who has a change of heart, and Ruskin Bond himself who meets a ghost at a resort in the middle of the night … we used to laugh at good stories and shiver at ghost stories while reading at night . It has lots of short stories that i love because it starts soon and ends soon ... while reading the book the expressions and thoughts change story to story . When i finally completed this book i had gifted it to my cousin and i still miss that book much .
I remember the stories too.. so i would share it with my friends in school and urge to read so and they would also do the same to there other friends , this moral spread is good , this book has ability to become a friend of yours and teach you good and bright lessons .
I would would love to share this to you that my favorite story is A special tree ...
This is a delightful book. There are varied stories which reflect his love for nature. Through this book Ruskin Bond wants to say that there are beautiful relationships in this world. The one you have with nature, the one whom you have with your grandparents, pets your house etc. The first few stories start with friendships between the kids- village school kid’s life. Later on, few ghosts come into the picture, few friendly and few naughty but never was scary like those in the Hollywood’s horror movies, telling us perhaps that we all co-exist. Through this book, I travelled up and down the hills through various bends and noticing flowers, leopards, tigers, ghosts and some heart-warming friendships. He ends the book with a short summary of how he lead his life from that of being bachelor to now a beloved grandfather. He even shoots up an invitation to readers to come up and visit him. I know I would love to. Perhaps you would consider the same. Read this book and slip away to your childhood memories and those unknown Mussoorie plains.
This book contains many short stories fit for children of all ages. Ruskin Bond has created a perfect book full of mystery, amusement, meaning and fun. It is a very interesting book, one which I recommend everybody to read. Read about the camaradarie between a village herder and a majestic tiger, about a troublesome Pret who harrasses a family, a leopard who doesn't seem to mind the company of children and other magical characters including Ruskin Bond himself.
It's a brilliant book, with some of the best stories by Ruskin Bond. I have read other stories by him also, but the ones about nature are the ones that I like best. Nevertheless, all his stories are simply wonderful.
I loved the book but the story I liked the most was Money Trouble the money tutu was so funny and another story I liked from it was snake trouble because Aunt Ruby was so scared of the Python and fainted . I it a really good book I recommend it to who ever reads this review .
This book was the best in my book reading series. The stories inside it were mind-blowing and were filled with lots of imagination and creativity. The stories I liked most were snake trouble, monkey trouble ,the thief s story and the best was wind on the haunted hill .The most greatest book ever.
I love to read books by Ruskin Bond and this one was amazing! I am hoping to get such more books by Ruskin Bond in the book reading compt. The story about Tutu, the mischievous monkey was the best. The overcoat, the special tree and Tiger my friend were too awesome. Overall I love the book, thanks.
It is a beautiful book, once I finish reading it ,I find myself start reading from the start again! In this book Ruskin Bond drives us into the world of Stories, where there are prets, cherry trees, haunted ruins and many more.......After reading "the cherry tree story", I also planted coriander in a pot. I liked how Ruskin Bond wrote that his grandson was wondering why his grandfather is scribbling sitting on the edge of his bed when he should be playing with him. I was thrilled to read the final part of story "the overcoat"when the ghost Julie thanked the person for giving her the overcoat. Miss Mackenzie is a very special character in this novel for her amazing interest in flowers.
I have always enjoyed a Ruskin Bond story whenever I came across one as a child. But that had been a long time back. I started listening to the Audible version of this book only coz I didn't have anything else in my library and I had earlier downloaded it as a free book. But I'm glad I did so. It took me far away from the stressful world of my usual reads. For those 4 hours I was right back to childhood days and the stories brought a smile to my face. Those amazing descriptions of Mussoorie hills and of panthers, monkeys and ghosts cheered up my day!
'Just one small seed, ' said Rakesh, and he touched the smooth bark of the tree that he had grown. He ran his hand along the trunk of the tree and put his finger to the tip of a leaf. ' I wonder, ' he whispered. 'Is this what it feels to be God?' ~~~~~~~~~~Great Stories For Children by Ruskin Bond. . . . Taking a Lil break from India After Gandhi has been very satisfactory, reading this marvellous book made me feel glad and surreal. You might feel nostalgic after reading a few stories, as most of the stories revolved around childhood memories, esp. love and time spent with grandparents. Stories are simple, funny, heartwarming and full of innocence, not just for children but for adults also!!
Another fantastic book for the legendary author Ruskin Bond. The stories are entertaining and imaginative. As, usual Bond creates a bond with his readers through his beautiful narration and humour. Loved reading the stories myself. It has so many stories written in simple though interesting way. It is one of my favourite book. Just Loved the book and of course the artistic cover that made me go for this book. I would surely like to recommend it to others as well.
I downloaded this on Audible for free and decided to give it a try ( even though I don't have any juniors in my house ). To tell the truth, i could not put it down once I started. The stories are simple yet descriptive to the extent that you start imagining them. After reading the last chapter you get to that this is sort of a memoir by Ruskin in the form of short stories. That certainly added a charm to this book. Highly recommend it.
Reading Ruskin Bond makes me feel at home. This book particularly with various stories connected with nature, leopard, tiger, ghosts, trees, python, monkey, bear and pets really make you feel good about the way stories are written. With his style of wit and humour I am sure readers will enjoy he stories.
Great Stories for Children is one of Ruskin Bond’s most beloved collections for young readers. The stories are adventurous, humorous, and emotionally warm, making them ideal for children while still appealing to adults.
Bond’s storytelling here is energetic and imaginative. He writes about mischievous monkeys, ghostly encounters, noisy parrots, daring train journeys, and small-town escapades.
Each story is crafted with a perfect blend of suspense and fun, keeping young readers hooked without overwhelming them.
The real charm, however, lies in Bond’s understanding of childhood. He captures the thrill of discovery, the temptation of mischief, and the pure joy of small adventures.
The children in his stories are relatable — curious, brave, flawed, and always endearing.
Bond’s descriptions of nature add richness to the book. Even when the plot is fast-paced, he pauses to describe a sunset, a sudden storm, or the smell of pines.
These moments give the stories depth and introduce young readers to the beauty of the natural world.
While the stories are light-hearted, they also carry emotional undertones: friendship, loyalty, family, and kindness.
Bond conveys these themes subtly, never resorting to heavy-handed messages.
In essence, Great Stories for Children is a celebration of imagination and innocence. It remains one of Bond’s finest gifts to young readers and a timeless reminder of the magic hidden in everyday life.
"We grow old. But sometimes, we hanker for old friendships, the old loves. Sometimes I wish I was young again..." This book is a collection of 19 short stories. This is one of books she got on her 6th Birthday from her Bua. Thankfully I preserved it for 1 year and took it out this year.
While some stories may have made a little more sense to her after 6-12 months, but it was a refreshing change from the Julia Donaldson and Dr Seuss etc picturebooks.
Actually, this was her first book with no pictures in it so the stories were the only thing holding her attention. This was my first Ruskin Bond book too.
Considering we are city dwellers she doesn’t relate that much to hills but am sure like her father has spent lovely school years in hill station, she would one day come to love them.
The stories are lovely and in this lockdown provided the lovely breeze of mountains in the summertime.
Her best stories are Monkey trouble & Snake trouble while I liked the The School Among the Pines.
