“Basiskennis over Islam” is oorspronkelijk samengesteld door Seyfettin Yazıcı en uitgegeven door het Presidium voor Religieuze Zaken. Het Onderzoekscentrum van ISN heeft dit boekwerk naar het Nederlands vertaald.

Dit boek bestaat uit 372 pagina’s, die onderverdeeld zijn in vier hoofdthema’s: geloofsleer, aanbidding, goede manieren (akhlāq) en biografie van profeet Mohammed (sīrah). De doelgroep van dit boek zijn jongeren en jongvolwassenen die op zoek zijn naar authentieke religieuze kennis of naar een handig naslagwerk aangaande religieuze kennis en praktijk.

De mens is een bijzonder en nobel schepsel, heeft een bevoorrechte positie in het universum en is geschapen met een verheven doel. Het stadium waarin mensen richting geven aan hun bestemming in het Hiernamaals, is ongetwijfeld tijdens het leven op aarde. De Almachtige Allah nodigt ons uit om – met het pad dat Hij ons heeft betoond – onszelf voor te bereiden op de eeuwige gelukzaligheid in het Hiernamaals. Onze taak is dan ook om – in lijn met het doel van onze schepping – onszelf allereerst te voorzien van de juiste geloofsleer, om vervolgens hiernaar te handelen door het volbrengen van onze aanbiddingsverplichtingen. Parallel hieraan dienen we ook ons innerlijk te versieren met rechtschapen denkwijzen en goede manieren. Dit zijn dan ook de ingrediënten voor een succesvol resultaat van ons aardse proefwerk.

De enige manier om onze religieuze plichten te volbrengen, is door het vergaren en het bestuderen van authentieke religieuze kennis. Dit boek richt zich hoofdzakelijk op jongere en volwassen studenten die islamitisch onderwijs genieten in moskeeën en opleidingsinstituten en is in eenvoudige en begrijpelijke taal geschreven.

Dit boek bevat religieuze basisinformatie waar elke moslim zijn of haar voordeel mee kan doen. Wij hopen dat het van nut is voor onze lezers.

I chose this from my humble Islam section in my home collection, to accompany my travels in Oman. It's basically an awkwardly cobbled together, huddiedly edited instruction manual for Islamic prayer and worship. It is the most in-depth book I have read as far as detailing the steps and minute rules of Islamic rituals, both in and outside the mosque. Useful, I'm sure, for a practicing Muslim who has newly converted, but not the most engaging reading material for the curious non-Muslim who merely wants to gain a deeper insight into the religion and its practices. Much of the heavy detail, worsened by the repetition and poor editing, wore on my patience a bit as I was not planning on actually implementing the steps for making dua, performing wudu or ghusl, and such things. It largely just went through one synapse and out the other, so to speak.

But still, I did learn a lot of new things about Islam, and I liked the abridged (i.e. less brutally honest) biography of the Prophet (salla allahu alayhi wa sallam - which honestly, in accompaniment with my learning Arabic, I absolutely love to say. It rolls so well off the tongue).

An introductory book to the obligatory knowledge of every muslim. It is still very basic and does not go in detail. It speaks from the Hanafi school of thought which is important to know. I would recommend this for muslims who are still insecure about the rulings of their Ibadah. It is also a great book if you haven't read any other Fiqh book, it also contains an abridged version of the seerah of the Prophet Muhammed saw. If you already have knowledge about Fiqh and are looking for more detail, I would not recommend this book.
