**2.5 stars**
It’s a weird title choice for a most regular-type story, I will give you that. I went in with certain expectations, and some different ones were fulfilled. In a very Aesop’s kind of way, though. It came with on-the-face morals (which I despise) and all but ended up being quite agreeable. Too much emphasis on ethics and morality for its own good, it could've been better. Not dimension-wise, but storytelling-wise.

One of the finest pieces Murakami has written. It feels real. The characters are real. The setting is real. The plot is real. I thoroughly enjoy such monologue-type stories over a cup of coffee... and this one, it definitely delivers. It's atmospheric at best, spiriting-away readers right into its world. You'll feel total disgust toward this Aoki and sorrow and empathy toward Ozawa as he fights against the silence.

I have to say, it left me with mixed feelings. There’s no denying that Murakami has a knack for creating an atmosphere, but as much as I appreciate his writings, I found "The Silence" somewhat underwhelming. It felt more like a fragment or a vignette than a complete story.
The protagonist’s internal struggles are there, but they aren’t fully fleshed out, which made it harder for me to connect with him on a deeper level, and the pacing didn’t help either.
I think I'd give it 2.5 stars instead of 3.
