A man possessed. A witch who is determined to save him. And a demon who will stop at nothing to claim them both.
Ava Helacourt has never met a demon she couldn’t exorcise. Outcast amongst the other witches in her coven and estranged from her own family, Ava only finds solace from her dark past in her studies as a demonologist to protect the mortal realm from the monsters that creep in through the rifts between the two worlds.
When Rory, a man possessed by a demon who calls himself Vain, is captured by her coven, Ava throws herself headfirst into untangling the web surrounding the two of them. Even when Rory seems to have lost all his will to fight back against the demon who refuses to leave his human vessel, she is determined to free him from his lustful and tempting captor.
But as the lines between human and demon begin to blur and it becomes clear that their connection is deeper than she initially realized, Ava starts to question everything she has ever known, and must decide how far she is willing to go in order to save Rory’s soul. Even if that means ruining hers in the process.

I was immediately hooked by 2% in. I really loved this story. Vain the demon.. Rory, the man possessed. This is like no other reserve harem I've read. This book was filled with longing and regret and a really unique love story. Ava, Vain, and Rory all had some terrible things happen in their lives, but the way they found each other, loved each other with every fiber, sacrificed for each other.. 💔 broke my heart and healed it all over again. ❤️🩹 I think if you loved the Souls Trilogy by Harley LaRoux, you should definitely check this one out. They aren't really similar, but they were giving the same hot, respectful demon men vibe.😍 If that's something you're into, you should give this author a chance. For a debut novel, this was spectacular!!
“I see you, Ava. I see all of you. You do not have to hide any part of yourself with me. All of the desperate and depraved pieces of your heart, the power and longing you feel in your soul. All of your strength, all of your darkness…I see it all, and feel like I am starving for you to see your own worth in the same way that I do.”
So glad I decided to read this book. I can’t even remember where I came across it not because I saved it on my kindle forever ago but I was in a slump and I was scrolling and I was like, “You know what, let’s do this one.” Man, I had no idea what I was in for.
The only thing that I am mad about is that this book came to an end. I mean I blewwwww through this book in a day that’s how good it was. I literally could not put it down unless someone pried it from me. This book could have easily been a dual or even a three book series with how much was going on and how great the story was. Within 3 chapters I knew I was going to love all three main characters.
I feel like the best way to go into this book is complete blind, that’s pretty much what I did and I loved every second of it. Cannot wait to see more from this author.
This Urban Paranormal Dark Romance exceeded my expectations! It not only brought the heat, but also a compelling plot that keeps you engaged with unraveling backstories, secrets and suspense.
We get a determined FMC and a cocky MMC that had me chuckling a couple of times. The relationship between Vain and Rory had some resemblance to Marvel’s Venom, but with more sophisticated bickering that will get you grinning from ear to ear.
Some of the plottwist I did see coming, but mainly because I was hoping for them to come out the way they did. The book feels pretty well rounded and balanced, inducing a natural blend between the sheets and the progressing story. The only open plot point in my opinion is the lack of contact with a certain group they part ways with. I’d have expected more repercussions or consequences on that front.
Are you looking for a book with: 🗡️ Demons X Witches; 🗡️ Instant Attraction; 🗡️ Detailed Spice; 🗡️ Dual POV; 🗡️ Bi MMC; 🗡️ Why Choose; 🗡️ AND a solid plot?
A Study of Blood and Ichor will get you hot and bothered while enjoying a paranormal romance that goes beyond attraction and focuses on letting people see all of you, even the darkest parts.
⚠️ Read the trigger warnings for it does touch a couple of dark topics that might not be for everybody.
I received this eARC for free courtesy of BookSirens and leave this honest review voluntarily.
To experience a book such as Katia Black’s debut is a once in a lifetime privilege.
To start with, please be warned of the trigger warnings as it may, uh, for lack of a better term but not as amusing, trigger others. As well as take note of the genres (other reviews here on GR has them listed) as you may have come for one genre, but aren’t ready for the others.
Alright, let’s get on it. From the very first line I was already hooked. Why? The vivid imagery. One thing I will always immediately appreciate is how well an author can bring me into their world. Katia did not disappoint, with all her beautiful detailing and the extent she would take to immerse the reader.
And it’s not just her many colorful ways she can describe her character’s surroundings. She builds her characters in such a way that you wanted to learn more about them. Why does this character react in such a way? What happened in the past that caused them to be like this?
And the world-building! The world she has created has left me wanting more! There was so much you can discover from the world, that you can tell how much thought was put into the making of it all.
Ava. Our FMC, the talented witch demonologist. From the beginning, I saw her as timid. But she sure didn’t take time to prove me wrong. Ava was a more complex character than you’d think. She didn’t shy from a challenge nor was she needlessly stubborn for unnecessary conflict. She is human and was raised on a certain belief, which meant for some hard-to-make decisions to be had.
Rory, my beloved. He deserves the world and the moon and the stars, in more ways than one. From the very first POV change, I fell in love with him. Why? I related to him as a character. But every single moment we change to his POV was truly enjoyable. Many of my favorite quotes from this book were his in regards to many things, as they were exactly my kind of humor.
Vain. He was everything I wanted in a demon and more (which is quite something to say or admit, to be honest). He’s more than what is assumed, and I’m all here for it!
Their relationships!!. Every single interaction between the three was entertaining and amazing. All the banter and tension got me feeling giddy in my seat. They each bring about a change in each other, a realization and understanding for the better. And every moment after a certain point was just heartwarming and beautiful. Oh and don’t worry, I didn’t forget the most important part. Spice? All the built up tension from little moments came crashing down in some wonderfully written, not to mention very steamy, scenes. And we get to explore more of their dynamics and relationship with each other during those spicy moments, in not just a lust-filled fervor but a true sense of intimacy.
Now I won’t deny, I love angst. The more a book makes me cry, the closer it is to my heart. The topics that were discussed gave me a sweet taste of angst that was dealt with tastefully and beautifully as some of these were close to my own personal experiences. It wasn’t too little, it wasn’t too much. It was just right.
The plot. It stayed true to my expectations of the story, but there were points in which I was definitely surprised when something happened. But I will not deny I very much enjoyed the whole book! It was perfectly paced for a standalone. Theres twists and mystery galore, and many subplots that if fleshed out into a sequel (wink wink Katia? 😉), would be wholeheartedly welcomed!
I just genuinely want a sequel. This was a wonderfully written story with many interesting characters that I would love to learn more about!! But of course, our main focus is our main leads. And while I believe their story can continue on, the ending was beautiful and it’d be a shame if a continuation would be forced into the world.
To the author, Katia Black!. I have nothing but praises to sing to you. But first I will express my gratitude for allowing me the privilege of receiving an copy. I left this review of my own volition because I had so much things I wanted to say! I love the subtle humor you wove into the story that doesn’t take away from the seriousness of the situation, but enriches it. I love all your characters, your writing, everything!! Thank you for bringing this into the world. Will be dutifully following your work from now on :>
ASOBAI follows Ava, a witch trained as a demonologist. One day, a possessed man named Rory is brought into the place she works, and she is tasked with extracting information from the demon within him, as well as trying to rid him of said demon.
What follows next is a chain of events that leads Ava on a journey where she is forced to deal with a tragedy of her past and her growing, complicated feelings for not only Rory, but the devilish demon possessing him.
Katia's writing is exceptional. Her ability to weave emotion and heart into scenes is truly breathtaking. It was so easy to lose myself in the world she created. Ava's vulnerability and determination as a character was amazing to read, and I love that Katia didn't shy away from showing those hard feelings that so often accompany past trauma.
On the MMCs side, we have Rory + Vain, and without giving too much away, let me just say that I loved seeing their deep bond and that twist at the end? So unexpected but so good 🥹
This is the perfect book to read to get your witchy, demony, Fall vibes fix. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶.5/5
What a unique story. I have never read anything along the lines of possession/demon etc. The characters were written so well and I really enjoyed the story as as whole. The mouth on our MC was top tier. Highly recommend. Watch out for your triggers.
I honestly could have finished this book in a day but busy busy me! Anyways This book This book… Hold on, give me a damn minute while I recover (TAKES A LARGE INHALE AND EXHALE)
GOD this book, I love it, I fell in love with it the first minute I read that first chapter and I was hooked like fish on a fish pole
I love and I mean LOVE Ava she is really one of those characters that you instantly fall in love with. She’s brave, she’s risky and caring even when she’s always wearing a resting bitch face, she’s one of those witches that I would’ve been best friends with.
Book Best friends for life 🖤🖤
Vain and Rory. I absolutely love these two! Vain comes off nonchalant and like carefree to anyone’s demands and Rory is very mentally unstable but a beautiful broken soul. Vain brings him back. Vain really was that anchor for Rory and I loved it so much it made me very emotional because you seen how much vain loved Rory. Ava becomes that person that made him open his eyes like I can be happy or at least worth living. Like let me live for me, for once. Rory is that one guy that looks normal, you would think he was happy or content but inside he’s really suffering. Favorite line it’s very simple but it spoke a thousands words
“I was no monster. I was no demon. I was just Rory.”
I really loved how Ava tried her hardest to not fall into Vains like lust 😂😂 but you would literally have to be fucking brick wall to deny that man. 😂 but the tension was there the emotion she tried her damnest to battle with him was already a lost war there. And I ate that shit up like it was my first time ever eating.
“I hated how used to shifting I had become. This time when Vain landed us on an empty street along the riverside, I didn’t find the aftermath of it as jarring as the other times before.”
The SPICE
Ugh I could claw my toes through the sole of my fucking shoe and dig it into the damn wood that’s how much tension it was, that’s how spicy it became when it all went down. I have never! Seen anything like it before in a book and think of scary movies 2 with the ghost😂😂
Another favorite line
“You shouldn’t feel this good,” he whispered against my swollen lips. “Why the fuck do you feel so good?”
NO SPOILERS I PROMISE. But that scene between Rory and vain UGH if I could throw my emotions fully into this damn review you would know why I’m reacting this way so I’ll just give my favorite line from that scene 😘
We became one body, one entity. One soul. My hand was his. This body was mine—ours—his to control and do with as he pleased. And I let him. Because I was a desperate man.
There’s so much in this book that I loved and so many quotes that adding them all would literally give you all the juicy parts but fuck off and go read this book!! SOOOOO good, absolutely five stars.
Katia, you have done a wonderful job and I mean beautiful, you had me hooked when I beta read it and was still obsessed after reading for an arc. This is one of those books that sticks with you for a lifetime and then after that it will still be on my mind.
Great work on your debut novel and I truly wish you the best of the best outcome with this amazing story.🖤 I really hope to read more of your work in the future, you have a fan for life.
"Because I see you, Rory Masters. And while you may have given upon yourself a long time ago, that doesn't mean that those around you have done the same."
Super excited to have been able to do my very first ARC read, but immensely grateful for it to have been Katia Black's A Study of Blood & Ichor. Katia and her mcs hold a very near and dear place in my heart as she was my first licensed character art commission, so to be able to help bring her her characters to life and now read her first book is such an awesome full circle moment!
For her first book, I absolutely adore Katia's writing style. I picked up the book and all I did for the whole day was read this story because I could not put it down! It was so easy for me to get lost in the story and imagine the scenes. I LOVED THE BANTER BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS, a lot of jaw dropping moments for unexpected flirty and funny lines. And KB does such a good job of building a relationship between our mcs, the growing trust and fondness of each other is something I enjoyed.
I also appreciated how very straightforward she kept the plot. I do wish some side characters were a bit more fleshed out, and maybe a bit more of or mcs as well, but I didn't mind it too much. I also wish there was more time to learn deeper lore of the world, but overall, I'm able to sacrifice those things as it kept the main plot and the focus of our characters more in line, and helped avoid any unnecessary information or potential to stray away from what we really needed to know, which let everything come full circle in such a satisfying way in the end.
This book contains themes of depression, and for someone who has struggled with it, I think KB did a really good job and showing how even in our darkest moments, we are not wrong for wanting to seek comfort and how it is okay to rely on others. I fell in love with Rory so much because, it just felt so real and relatable of how hard it is to internalize needing help. Same for Ava as well, I loved watching her and Rory slowly learn their worth through love and companionship (with each other and Vain), and I especially loved how their resolutions towards that acceptance wasn't instant. There were times of hesitation, wavered feelings and they needed to pull back and reevaluate again before fully accepting and feeling worthy of love all to the end. AND I LOVED THAT, because it just felt so real, raw and vulnerable, and I found myself crying multiple times for our mcs.
AND OKAY, THE SPICE!? *fist pumping in the air as I wipe my tears* YEESH. I loved how sexy and intimate all the spicy scenes were. I don't know how I can read normal spice ever again 😩 And um... the last spicy scene? 10/10 YUMMYYYY. I never really felt like the smut overpowered the plot as well. A lot of the lusting from Vain & Rory felt really natural to each of them; Vain being a demon and Rory on the human side. The sexual tension adds to the characters and in a way, I found it as a sense of comfort and familiarity to bond between them, which is always fun and strengthens their banter (which again, I ADORED).
Super long review, oops, BUT KB CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR VERY FIRST RELEASE!! I'm super excited to see what you write next as this was SO STRONG as a first release. CONGRATS CONGRATS CONGRATS!! 💗
Listen guys. You need to preorder this book, like, yesterday. I am so honored to have been able to read this book before publication, September 6 release date, and let me tell you. I DEVOURED this book. I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up WAY past my bedtime to finish it, and the author was so cool and friendly.
Ava is a demonologist and a witch with a dark past. When Rory, possessed by a demon named Vain, is brought into her coven, Ava tried everything she can to gain answers from both Rory and Vain before an exorcism is attempted. After a few failed attempts, the head which decides the only way to rectify this issue is to kill both host AND demon. Ava can’t live with this decision and helps Rory/Vain escape. The lines between right and wrong blur as they continue through their travels and day to day. As her connection to Rory continues to grow, Ava starts questioning everything she’s ever been taught. Does this mean she could love a demon too?
Estranged from her family and a pariah amongst her coven, Ava has thrown herself into her demonology studies. Every exorcism she performs is personal to her. When her coven captures Rory, a mysterious man possessed by an alluring demon named Vain, Ava is determined to save him from the demon. But when his connection to the demon proves too much for the coven to destroy, Ava decides to save Rory no matter the cost. Even if she has to make a deal with Vain herself.
Ava finds demons simultaneously horrifying and intriguing which makes her struggle with what she feels she should want versus what she actually wants. As she learns more about Vain and Rory, she is forced to confront her own history and guilt. Rory similarly has a dark background and he initially resents Ava's commitment to saving him. Vain, meanwhile, is an unrepentant demon willing to do whatever it takes to protect those he loves. The interactions of the three make for a delightfully seductive read about broken people finding healing together.
A Study in Blood an Ichor is a fascinating darker urban fantasy romance that deals heavily in themes of forgiveness and guilt. It is an absolute gem of a story that is a must read for readers who are fans of Melissa Albert, Kim Harrison, and Diana Rowland.

2.75 I have mixed emotions. It was an easy read but the book left more to be desired. Unfortunately this book lacked emotional depth and I do not believe from what was written that any of them are in love. I could see maybe Vain having reasons to care for either one of them given his character arch at the end but we barely get any background on Rory and Ava was flat. There were a lot context that was missing from this story that if were included definitely would have made for a solid and satisfying read. After spice was introduced the plot stopped plotting and there were a few loose ends to the story. What I think was done well was Vain and Rory’s relationship and how they learned to coexist with each other.
A STUDY OF BLOOD AND ICHOR immediately caught my attention with it's premise: a witch trying to exorcise a possessed man and falling in love with both the man and the demon? Sign me up! The world-building was on the light side and I would have liked to understand more about where the world was now that demons and witches are known to humanity, but for a debut book it was really solid.
There is some plot going on but the bulk of the book was focused on the budding relationship between our witch Ava, sad boi Rory, and the devilishly charming demon Vain. I really enjoyed the dynamic between all three of them as well as the dynamic between Rory and Vain as they shared the same body. Vain was flirty, sexy, and possessive with Ava but also sweet and comforting with Rory whose difficult past weighed heavy on his shoulders. Though we also got the bare minimum on his past so I feel like we still don't really know who Rory is.
But while Vain might have been lusting after Ava, she definitely saw him as the enemy in the beginning and I appreciated that Ava took time to come around to Vain. However, that being said, I did feel like Ava loved Rory more and was just fine with Vain as a part of the package. Her animosity lasted a long time and while she was building feelings for Rory it felt like Vain remained mostly in the lust category, not love. Ava made a lot of rash decisions and her motives weren't always clear or consistent which was frustrating at times. I also felt like the romance between Rory and Vain was a little on the light side compared to the romance with Ava, so there were a few parts at the end that felt a little tacked on to satisfy the MM part of this MMF couple.
I waffled back and forth on my rating for this one and originally was going to go higher because I did read this quickly and was engaged with the story but once I had some time to think on it, all the plot holes and inconsistencies started to show up. But again, for a debut this was actually quite good and I would definitely try another book this author.
Content Warning: grief over past death of a sibling; light torture of MMC by FMC (but he likes it); past self harm and suicide attempt

This addictive, fast-paced read is a thrilling blend of forbidden romance, enemies to lovers, and paranormal elements that kept me turning the pages well into the night.
The story dives deep into a dark and dangerous world, where the sexual tension between the three main characters is palpable and adds so much depth to their evolving relationships. I loved how their growing trust and fondness unfolded, making every interaction feel charged and meaningful.
Katia Black masterfully weaves a compelling plot that not only brings the heat but also keeps you fully engaged. I found myself completely lost in the vivid scenes and intense emotions. Just a word of caution—make sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in.
Overall, this book left a lasting impression on me, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who loves dark romance with a twist. If you’re ready for an unforgettable journey filled with passion and intrigue, this one’s for you!
I fell in love with Ava as soon as I picked up this book. Seeing her so broken and still wanting to do everything made her feel just that much more like a real person. Everything about A Study of Blood and Ichor was well paced and beautifully executed. I especially loved the ending and how the last few chapters. Without wanting to spoil anything it’s something I wish I saw in a lot more books honestly.
If my read time is anything to go off of I will most definitely say this one is an amazing read that is hard to put down!
I'm in a reading slump rn so I'm probably over critical...
All in all, this was a cute little story about a witch and a demon-posessed guy. It wasn't necessarily bad, but I don't know. Sometimes, it just gave me the ick, especially at the end. I'm not gonna spoil, but one spicy scene at the end was a bit questionable, in my opinion.
Besides that it the book was completely fine in the way it was written, and I liked reading it.
Starting off I was engulfed in this book, Ava is such a good character she’s written in such a way you can’t help but love her, & feel for her with how her life’s been up to this point. Rory/Vain, wow these character/s bring even more to the story. This book has everything action, drama, spice. I couldn’t put this story down. If you haven’t read it yet you are definitely missing out. Katia Black Is such an amazing author.
First of all thanks to book sirens and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC. And before reading this book check the tw.
If you tell me that this is Katia's first book, I wouldn't believed you. I enjoyed her writing style, and how she describes everything makes you feel part of the story. I was completely hooked since the second chapter. I really enjoyed this story, the characters and their development.
Talking about the characters, it's impossible not to fall for Rory and Vain. Both are so different but they connect in a way that's so beautiful. I really liked seeing how Vain really is when he let Rory and Ava in, showing that he sometimes is vulnerable. Then, we have Ava. I loved her development, and how she could destroy all of her ideas she had about demons, and realized that nothing is what she thought. Also, it was so cute how Rory, Vain and Ava healed together. It's like they were made for each other but they didn't knew about it until they found each other.
The romance? So explosive and cute at the same time, and the I loved the flirty lines between them. Specially Vain's. The spice in this book it's so good, and I liked how intimate the scenes between our characters were. You can see the connection whether it was Ava and Rory, Ava and Vain, or the three of them.
Another thing I liked is how well the author touched the topic of mental health, especially depression. And this comes from someone who has it, Katia did a really good job since sometimes it's hard to have a good representation of such sensitive topics. For this, I understood Rory and what he was dealing with. It felt so real. I just wanted to hug him and say to him that it will be allright.
I recommend this book so much. Can't wait to read more books of this author.
5/5 ⭐️ 4/5 🌶️

Katia’s writing immediately hooked me and I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a dark why choose romance. I don’t want to elaborate too much about the plot because I enjoyed it so much and it was an incredible journey, but definitely check trigger warnings!
This is SO fun. It’s dark, and dangerous, and oh-so-sexy. Katia Black is a great writer, and if my one critique is that it’s ever so slightly insta-lovey and predictable, that doesn’t take away from the tension and satisfaction in these pages.
Ava, Rory and Vain are all distinct characters, but I really enjoyed how their emotions, fears, anxieties and attraction were interwoven. Why-choose isn’t usually my choice, but it really works here and isn’t contrived. It also delivers on the steam front - I think I’m still blushing!
The world building is top notch - we get enough information to hint at the social environment and magic systems, but aren’t overloaded with exposition.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this author! Well worth it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
All three characters were really well written and brought this story to life! I’m still thinking about Rory and Vain. Perfect as one, but also beautiful as individuals.
I understood Ava and her being careful around Vain. There was something that intrigued her, that she couldn’t shake off.
Her trauma from childhood and Rory’s fight against the darkness in himself brought these two together. Vain was an added bonus.
Loved these three and will put this author on my list to check out!

This was an amazing debut book! I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't put this one down! The writing style was perfect, the plot was creative and interesting, and the characters were amazing with each one being developed without just rattling off mundane information about them. Ava, Vain, and Rory each added so much dimension to the story and I loved how even though they each had very different background stories, the hardships they faced were similar and brought them even closer together. This was also a very unique way of presenting an RH theme and I loved it even though that isn't my usual trope I go for. I can't say enough good things about this book and I can't wait to see what else Katia Black comes up with in the future!
