Kate Daniels [Dramatized Adaptation] #7

Magic Breaks [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same in this #1 New York Times bestselling series: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being with godlike powers.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend a gathering of leaders from Atlanta’s supernatural factions. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered by a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear.

This dramatized audiobook also includes 2 short stories: Prequel and Jim's POV.

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

✅ Pace
✅ Plot
✅ Action and fighting
✅ New characters becoming more important
✅ Hugh D’Ambray
✅(🆗) Romance
🆗 Betrayal
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: violence, deaths, some gore, the usual with Kate...

So much happens in this book! The plot moves forward; there is action and fighting. Kate finally meets Roland, and the pack has to deal with traitors and spies in its midst. I listened to the dramatized adaptation for most of the book and read the rest, and it was so addictive! The dramatized adaptation is spectacular, once again. I highly recommend it to any fan of this series.

The Wererats alphas, especially Robert, are much more important in this book. They have been members of the pack council since the beginning, but we saw very little of them. I quickly grew attached to Robert and his no-nonsense approach. He is honest and blunt with Kate, but he is also fiercely loyal to the pack and does not hesitate to get his hands dirty and risk his life to help Kate when she needs it.

Hugh was one of my favorite parts of the previous book, and he continues to be a central part of the plot in this one. His intentions were still mostly a mystery in the previous book, but in this one, it becomes clear that while he wants Kate, he is her enemy. He obeys Roland’s orders to act against Kate and the pack, yet he still seems to hope to win her over eventually. I know he is one of the bad guys, but I can’t help being intrigued by him and wanting to know more about him. I am excited to get to his spinoff, if only to finally get an insight into his thoughts and motivations.

There is some scheming and even betrayal amidst the pack, but I was not surprised by it. We knew Hugh had a mole in the higher ranks of the pack, and I had strong suspicions about the identity of the spy. There were clues, and I can’t say that the identity of the mole was shocking at all. It makes sense, but I think I would have liked this plot twist more if I had been truly surprised by the betrayal.

“Of course they’ll be fine.”
We looked at each other and made a silent effort to believe our own bullshit.

The authors have a way to make you care for a character, only to kill them soon after. Seriously, I am afraid to get more attached than I am to any of them now. I do wish we’d seen more of Andrea in this book; I miss her and her interactions with Kate. She was part of the adventure, but she kinda fell into the background for most of the book.

We finally get to meet Roland, and I have to admit that he was a little underwhelming. There was this huge buildup since the first book, portraying him as the evilest of all evil, being all-powerful and ruthless, yet he didn’t appear to be as bad as what I imagined. I know it’s a façade, and he is probably biding his time, but I was still expecting something more explosive and intense for his first meeting with Kate.

I am curious to see how things will develop in the next book, with the way this one ended, and the big changes that will come into Curran and Kate’s everyday life.

Quick thoughts : I though I remembered just how dialed up Hugh's obsession gets and that we'd seen the worst of it in book six but wow oh wow. No. It reaches all new heights here. I can't wait for the.. shift (tee hee).

Thank fuck Jennifer is off the board. That was getting tired.

Curran and his reaction to Kate's new sword. He was all of us. Killed me.

Kate is such a fucking badass. I have so many examples of this but in this case.. Hebla.

We finally, finally, meet Big Daddy.

And then there's that ending. With a resolution we've all been waiting for because the writing has always been on the wall.

The epilogue always tickles me.

This book's bonus was another Curran POV, MOVING DAY. The Curran-Julie interactions are just the best. Loved how they used this moment of transition to reflect on Curran's past and how that had lead him to where he was upon meeting Kate.

This bonus was followed by a Jim POV because, dun dun dun, poor Jim is in it now.

This series gets better and better. I really thought book 6 was the best book of the series. And so far it was. Until I listened to Magic Breaks. I loved this so much. So much happens in this book and I wonder what the eights book will bring.

I sound the same in all these reviews, but experiencing this series on Graphic Audio has been amazing. In Magic Breaks, Kate really gets to shine with and without Curran. We actually don’t really get to see Curran until past the halfway point (which was both good and bad because I love them together so much).

There are betrayals, sacrifices, and vengeance (RIP Aunt B) and we get to see Hugh dial up the creepy even more. We even get Ghastek’s back story. There were some parts that felt too technical/magic heavy in this one (I had such a hard time imagining the whole prison/grandma scenes), but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book.

The biggest thing is that Kate finally gets to meet daddy dearest, but honestly it felt pretty anticlimactic. This confrontation has been teased and built up over 7 books and then we meet him and yes, he’s powerful and will cause death and destruction, but he also wants to be paternal? A proud parent? It was pretty jarring. The ending was sweet though (no stress since we all knew what Curran would do) and I’m excited to see what’s next and how everyone will take to their new roles.

The graphic audio also includes 2 short scenes - 1 from Curran’s POV and 1 from Jim’s. Curran’s takes place after the events of Magic Breaks and is about his family and the time before the Pack. Jim’s takes place right around the end of the book and is about his reaction to the coming Pack changes.

Basic Plot: Kate's inevitable confrontation with her father, the all-powerful Roland, begins.

This book is a game-changer in the series. Kate confronts Roland in this volume, which is a huge moment that the whole series has been building towards. Let's just say that the confrontation goes as Kate chooses, not necessarily as Voron had trained her.

There is a shrinking of Kate's world in this book. It doesn't focus on the Pack and its politics as much. It focuses much more on Kate's internal struggle with what is expected of her and with what she expects of herself. That makes this book very thoughtful. That's not to say that there isn't some ass-kicking along the way, but Kate has a lot to deal with and decisions about Life (not a type-o) to make. The ending of the book was surprising, but it made total sense considering previous events and the growing that Kate has undergone. It opens up new possibilities for Kate (and others).

Re-read but through Graphic audios, which I do love.

I still love this series. So well written, absolutely invested in that world. I think this is my favourite book in the series. It all comes to head in this book. It all comes out, too!

Emotional roller coaster and epic badassness from both Kate and Curran. The way Curran came for Kate and their dynamic banter all of it! Made my heart melt... I want a Curran!
It's both the end and a new beginning as their life changes with the events of this book.

I love the characters, banter, world and everything around it.
Oh, and a little spicy smut, too. You don't get a lot of smut in this series, but when you do, it is passionate and only cements the relationship.

Ahh, this book was so good – in my top three in the series along with Magic Strikes and Magic Rises. We are brought to a conclusion of sorts to the arc that the book has been leading us on in the first seven books or so but I know that Magic Breaks is not the end of the series. We clearly are going to impart on a new chapter of Kate Daniels’ story in the next book. I really love this series – Kate is so strong and devoted to her friends, Curran is such a great romantic lead, the magic system is completely unique to any other fantasy series I’ve ever read, and the supporting characters all have their own motivations and stories which are compelling in their own right. Ilona Andrews is such a great urban fantasy writer.

Another incredible book! Was I surprised? No. Blown away by another brilliant storyline? Yes! The strength of friendship bonds, a little bit more of The Order, and a lot more of Hugh. He is an asshole, but damn it he is one you love to hate! Cages, revenge, love-it’s all in here! I’m going to wait for graphic audio book 8 to release before listening because the cast is stellar and make the story that much better! I’m not ready to ever leave this world. This is going to be a tough year of reading!

*sigh* I hate that these editions are almost done. This has been a favorite series of mine for years. I loved the drama. The romance. The mythology. This cast is almost perfect. I still don't like Andrea's narrator. The accent seems wrong for some reason. Anyways, that's not enough to make me knock a star off.

Great as always, the GA production really brings the book to life.
I especially liked the bonus Curran's POV.
I don't like to brag. (Curran modestly)

I love Magic Breaks and was really looking forward to the dramatized adaptation. While I think the cast and soundtrack do add a lot to the Kate Daniels world, the events with Hugh and everything Mishmar related didn't feel quite as intense.

As I mentioned in my recycled review, the original narrator, Renée Raudman truly made you feel like you were in that cell with Kate. She made you feel the anguish when Slayer snapped. I'm not saying that the narrator for Kate failed here because it was delivered very well, but there's something about the original that can't be touched. Could be that the Graphic Audio version of these books were all released within a yearish and Renée spent years with the series and felt closer to the character.

Regardless, I am incredibly thankful to have these new editions. The cast and soundtrack are both exceptional.

Recycled review:Magic Breaks ended an arc and moved the Kate Daniels series in a direction I didn't expect.

That said, even having read Magic Breaks numerous times, there were moments that still hurt.

Wasn't my favorite character in the series, but it was someone I really liked and wanted to know more about. It fucking hurts. Still. Oh, and my name is Melanie and I totally approve this meme.

I think that Renée Raudman's representation of the anguish and pain that Kate suffered through sounded so real you could feel it. That may sound silly, but the visuals already laid out plus her narration broke my heart more than once.

Recycled review: This is the fourth or fifth time I've read Magic Breaks, but there were soooo many things I'd forgotten about. Cuddles?! How did I ever forget about the mammoth donkey? So much hilarity due to that prancing donkey. That's the downside to reading 100+ books per year. No matter how much you love a book and/or series, there are lots of details you forget. That said, it makes doing a re-read that much more fun.

Holy frak was Magic Breaks brilliantly written! I remember being in the middle of my first read and a few of my speed reading, book buddies were finished and complaining about the ending of the book. I was expecting it to royally suck because after all, they were the ones that got me into the Kate Daniels series in the first place. If they were pissed with the direction, how was I going to feel about it?

In the end, I thought the progression of the book felt natural and was very much needed. Magic Breaks was action packed and chock full of awesome. It made me laugh, it damn near made me cry, it made me think WTF on more than one occasion (I'm talking about you, Grandma!), and it made me love Kate and Curran even more. In my opinion, it is hands down the best book in the Kate Daniels series.

I also want to add that I'm thrilled that the authors chose to end the main arc of the series in Magic Breaks and start in on something different with Magic Shifts. There are series that I've just about given up on because the author(s) keep dragging out a plot line that started in the first book in the series and should have been tied up way before now. Seven books in is cool, but eighteen? Oh. Hell. No. Now that the arc with Roland has been closed and Kate and Curran's lives have been drastically changed, I can't wait to see what happens next. Bring on Magic Shifts!

I love the dramatized audiobooks and Kate Daniels is one of the best series ever. So a mix of both had to be great and it was. It's been a while since I read the series and I've forgotten a few things. I especially like the bonus when Curran and Jim both got a short point of view telling. My favorite thing of the adaptation of this series is the narrator for Curran. That deep growly voice!!! OMG.. he could read me the phonebook and I would melt. Absolutely perfect and exactly how I pictured Curran's voice. I'm not a huge fan of Jim. He always was an a** and he continued throughout the series to be an even bigger a** but his narrator was on the spot and a great choice.

I cannot wait for April when the the dramatized adaptation for the first Hidden Legacy book is released. I like audiobooks but I LOVE these graphic audios. If you haven't tried so far, you should give it a try and see how you like it. Whenever I start one, I hardly get any sleep because I cannot stop. I hope more authors decide to give it a try and I'm so happy that Ilona Andrews did it with all of my favorite series.

This book is such a pivotal part of the overarching story line for Kate. There is so much pain and emotional depth crammed into this, for not just Kate, but for Christopher and other characters as well. In this book, she finally comes face to face with her father and she is exposed to the greater masses as his daughter. In typical Kate fashion, things don't go as planned, chaos ensues, and things are altered forever in so many ways. The sheer amount of upheaval in the lives of the characters in this book is absolutely astounding. This book, more so than the others before, really centers on Kate's heritage and the choices that she is forced to make because of that. She is the catalyst for everything that happens, and I feel like that focus shift really makes an impact in the story's feel. I love it, and the graphic audio cast does an amazing job with all of it.

Such an outstanding series. This is my third time reading and/or listening! And it is as good as the first time. No summary, no spoilers, simply my enthusiastic endorsement of great Urban Fantasy where the good guys win, eventually. GraphicAudio nails all the voices, all the action, all the sounds. No longer surprised at how spot on GA interprets Kate Daniels.
