I called it! So this second book doesn't keep me on my toes as the first book did, owing to the lack of actions in Lord of Embers. However, there are a few things that I love such that some of my previous remarks on what I find lacking before, is finally tackled here with the majority of the plot centering around Rowan's character development!
I like the City of Thorns Rowan, but I love Lord of Embers Rowan more. I find her a bit unsophisticated in the previous book but Rowan's growth and evolution as she discovered who and what she is was fascinating. Crawford successfully portrayed her as empowering without making it seem overbearing by flawlessly connecting all the events/people/places to her characters build up throughout.
Meanwhile, Orion on the other hand is freaking unhinged and I love him for that! We were given a bit of Orion's past before, sure, but I wish there had been more time spent externalizing him but alas, his attractiveness was the only thing that was accentuated. Be that as it may, we get to see more of Orion's persona in this book and I like that Crawford left me wondering as to who's the bad guy now.
Another point for the book is that Orion and Rowan are finally making babies! And not a depressing one at it too like the freaking abomination it was previously. The exchanges between Orion and Rowan are up to par. They plainly can't deny their attraction, but both also want to reign which adds tension and humor to the plot. And I believe in essence, Orion does care for Rowan but is at odds with himself. I just wished Crawford would push it a bit more so the connection between the two is well-built.
That being said, the plot is not as remarkable. I see why some of it serves as continuative to whatever will happen next but I do find some of the chapters flat with subjunctive mood and poor wording. The dialogue still needs an overhaul to make it more genuine and nuanced. The whole psychological theory is still happening too but not as prominent as it did in the first book where I simply feel like nitpicking.
This book took a different direction than I expected it to be but as a character > plot person, you can say I wasn't entirely disappointed. In fact, I can't wait for a good showdown between Orion and Rowan in the next installment, in the hope Rowan would kick his ass with how the book ends.
